Timing Chain Day | Getting the Budget Overland LR4 Adventure Ready

No one likes to spend their money on maintenance instead of mods, but even the budget builds still need to run.
Today we get the Budget LR4 ready to take on some trips this summer. This is our simple low cost overlander. Just some 2.5" Lift rods on 275/65R18 tires. We built out a nice little kitchen with fridge inside and equipped it with a solar panel and topped it off with a Rough Country Roof Tent. Nothing overly fancy but enough to get out there comfortably.
So we freshened up the timing chains as you do in 5.0 Rovers. Also changed all the fluids including transmission, diffs, transfer case. Fresh control arms up front to keep it tight and a coat of woolwax to keep it clean.
You should do some buyers guide for these rovers. Talk about common issues to look for and maybe the first things you guys do after buying one. You have a ton of knowledge that a lot of people could use.
I think we could do that. I’ll have to add that to the list.
Great idea. Step through video showing how to check the various items and what is good, bad. A video on checking the chains through the oil fill with a pick? What does a good one look/feel like vs bad...?
Im ansurgical tech and own a 2010 lr4 ....crash cart?!!!! That's hilarious....and so true in needing one if you have an lr4.

i agree, i do all my own work and am always looking for tips a tricks, i did the chain, tensioners and supercharger nose cone 25k miles ago. quite the job.....

Sphincter stretcher! I call mine “ life “. Nice job on LR4. Always reinforces my happiness with a td5 D2 and 300tdi D1. Much simpler creatures.
Haha. Life will do that to you. I’m sad we never got the diesels over here. I think when I move on from the ECO D1 I’m going to replace it with an imported 300tdi D1.
@@LostCauseRanch lots of V8i D1 here in Australia going cheap, lovely cars but too expensive to run with unleaded at $2 AUD per litre. My 300tdi does 8.8l/100km with fresh static balanced motor, whilst not a speed machine it is reliable and reasonably cheap to run with diesel being of similar price.
LS1 crank pulley puller (the adjustable claw one) works on those. Put the pulley bolts in 75% and grab onto them with the LS puller. 2:32

Hey man ! Great video! Quick question. Can you tell me the total height of the lr4 with the tent? I’m planning on getting a tent for mine but not sure if is going to fit in my garage.
It’s tall, just measured it for you. It’s 95 inches so just under 8 ft. I’ve been planning on switching to a hard shell lower profile tent but that probably won’t happen until next year.

Please for gods sake it ain’t a lr 4 it is a Land Rover discovery 4 or a disco 4 there’s no such thing as a lr 4
Haha, in the US it’s an LR4 but I get you, should be a Discovery 4. We had Discovery 1, Discovery 2 then they switched to LR3 and LR4 then after that back to Discovery 5. Would have been much nicer if they just kept the Discovery nameplate throughout in the US.
Hey man question !! I have a RR Sport HSE 5.0L V8 its a 2011 , My head gasket is leaking or the head is warped its one of them lol only the passenger side I found anti freeze in it when I put my HD Micro camera to inspect the cylinders .. I figured well I'm going to do a head gasket I might as well replace the timing chain too ... Im going with a Genuine Land Rover head Gasket of course , do you recommend the same for the timing chain and guides ?? unless you know of a better after market park that is better then the Factory ones let me know ! thanks for your time hope to hear back soon !! IM from the East cost Near Cape cod we have a Buch of Rovers over here !! lol
Good idea on doing the chains as well. I would go with the oem stuff. I haven’t ran across better aftermarket stuff. The newer updated genuine stuff is much better than what you have in there. We had one set of cheap aftermarket tensioners on one that came in once and they were like half the weight of oem ones.
You guys do seem to have a fair amount of rovers out there.

Lol They even have a club meetup called South Coast jeeps lol I see them every Friday they meet up at my Dads friends Farm ..
How about the Panhandle Overland Rally? Sept 23-25 in Sand Point, Idaho. On the top of a mountain this year and is always a great time. Love my hat!
That may actually work out timeline wise. I’ll have to see if I can get something out together.

Did you use the Meyle HD lower front arms? I'm loving them so far. Just as comfy as OE but should last longer.
We’ve always used the Meyle HD arms on ours/customers in the past. Trying the Eurospares on this one since I never wanted to try those on a customer vehicle. Fully intend on these not lasting but it was the perfect one to try them out since it’s mine.
What coolant did you use?

I own a 2010 lr4 with 129,000 miles and I change mine at 5000 and have considered 3000 the way I've always changed mine but since there recommendation is so high I figured 5000 miles is really good but I feel guilty everytime it goes over 3000 miles between oil & filter change.
I bought my Rover at 96,000 miles and the dealer I bought it from got it at a huge north Carolina auction yard so I don't have any idea what's been done to it. So I'm clueless as to when or if it has had a timing chain replacment and if ir when I should have it done and how much labor & parts will cost to have it done. I'm sure here in the states it will be ridiculously high like everything else.So when you say the scary issues with land rovers and the timing chain being one of a few yes it scares the 💩 out of me.
I love my Rover and want to keep it but I'm not rich or any kind of well off even so maybe I'm better off selling or trading it before the big ticket items smack me right in the bank account.
Hey, helpful video. I'm currently shopping lr3&lr4 and trying to educate myself 1st. I found a very nice 2011 LR4 with 144k for about $6k because the owner says it goes into limp mode and giving timing chain code. It still runs and will do fwy speeds fine.
How risky of a purchase would this be? Would I likely be able to get away with new guides and tensioners? (Btw the owner has also recently had a fuel pump and ignition parts replaced by the local Rover dealer). Thnx
Too bad, these are nice looking vehicles. How expensive is it to replace timing chains? Is it worth getting a used 2012 LR4 for $18k, 102k mi?
Can I drop my 2010 LR4 off with you for a while to do everything you did to this one? I'm in Iowa frequently. I'm on OG chains with 125,000 miles.
My 2012 LR4 with 97800 miles will need the same preventive maintenance that you're doing. Unfortunately, I have to learn how to disassemble the engine properly. Hope you can do Auto Clinic for Land Rover LR4's here in Southern California. I don't trust dealership service. Good luck and more power to you and Ted.
Looking at a used unit with 172k miles - the timing chain was done in the last 10k miles, would this allow for another -50k miles with normal maintenance?
Would you do a timing chain job on an LR4 as a trade for a nice LR3 HSE? not runing, but nice

@@LostCauseRanch Thanks! I’m currently trying to track down a rhythmic rattle/knocking sound of my own on our 2011 LR4. RPM dependent upon acceleration really only in 1st/2nd gear under load (wind noise probably why I can’t hear it above that) Doesn’t do it free revving in park or neutral.
Typically chains will rattle worse on startup and you can get it to do it free revving. Just spitballing but could be fuel injection related, I’ve had noisy fuel pumps on these as well. And those can sometimes be worse under load. But that one is going to be hard to pinpoint if you have to be driving to get it to act up.

You should woolwax the inside of the frame too. I did that to my LR4 with the special applicator hose that woolwax includes with multiple holes for spraying 360 degrees inside the frame.
To tell you the truth I can’t remember if I did spray inside that time or not. I do have that same hose and usually use it. Makes a world of different in the salted road lands.

What wheels set up you have
It is the Terrafirma steel wheels with wheel spacers to clear the LR4 front calipers. Lucky8 has the setup available.
