I played a prototype of the Jazz bass (not a production model), superbly made and amazing value. If only there was a 5 string !
I played that one too. Sooo good!
Why saint soap have a gap volume on E string?
That Low Rider is killer! As is the player playing it!! I love the fact that you go through all the different playing styles, so everyone can actually hear what the gear you're playing sounds like in different scenarios!! The main question i have about the Low Rider is: How's the balance? Is there any significant neck dive? Keep killing it!! 🤘🤘
The low e-string seems to disappear in the soap demos. I'm thinking the pickup must not be wide enough for the string spacing and the string is not aligned with the magnetic field. It's too bad because they look and sound cool otherwise!
Yeah that's weird !
Such a shame. It would have been a great bass otherwise.
I’d be buyin the saint soap. Definitely putting flats on it. Would be super curious to hear this bad compared with the short scale version. Long scale (LS) rounds vs. LS flat vs short scale (SS) rounds vs. SS flats
I love the soap bar ones, they have a real unique character ....
Agreed!
If I remember correctly, the bolt-on T-bird design was inspired by Joh Entwistle's famous "Fender-bird."
This very much feels like that
Thanks for plating the same simple riffs the same way over and over.
Not being sarcastic at all here... it really helps to hear the differences between the basses pickups and rounds vs flats.
Really nice comparisons as opposed to some channels that just noodle around so much that decent comparison of tones can be very difficult.
@@7171jay I hate it when a demo showcases a bass playing SUPER flashy stuff. Shows you nothing
@JonnyDibble Exactly.
Also along with flashy you often get not the same exact flashy from take to take and/or talking in-between.
The brain has a very short retention time for sound so playing that goes on for too long leaves you comparing the stuff played at the end of a long take often to different notes by the time the next take starts or there is a bunch of talking between and memory of the first take fades.
This video on the other hand avoids all of that with demos that are just long enough to get that sound loaded into your brain and then hit you with the next one before the first sound fades from memory.
Really excellent work, I wish all audio comparisons were done this well.
Great review as always. They all look really cool - Getting Reverend bass vibes from these
Thanks very much!
Pretty sure the original saints and lowriders were designed by Dan Lakin and made by the Rwverend factory? Or did I hallucinate that? Don't know where these are made.. But that heritage i guess is there
@@pensacolatv5639 they are indeed
My thoughts as well .
The saint is ibanez talman influenced maybe?
Mullet looks great man. They all sound great but the Saint Soapbar with rounds sounds incredible.
My mullet approves this comment
Yes, fully agree. With rounds it sounds amazing
Super well made video with clean sound, amp sound, playing styles.. it has it all! 🤩😍
Thanks!
I've been dreaming about T-Bass with jazz bass neck for ages! It looks great!
I just got my Saint Soap today. No issues with the frets on my greenie. I did have to do a setup, but it was decent out of the box. I'm normally a P player, but this one just might be my new favorite. (Have to let the Honeymoon phase run it's course.) To me it sounds like a cross between a P and a Thunderbird. A darker sounding P might be a good description.
Love that there's a company doing something new rather than P or J bass version 111763
Agreed!
The green speaks to me. All really nice though. Personally wish they were a few hundred dollars less but dont we all wish everything was cheaper! Thanks for sharing these with us and great job on the video.
Edit: I was looking at prices for The Low Rider and The Grail bass at over $1,050 usd each. The ones shown in this video are less than half that price putting these along with the Squier CV series liked you stated. A great value at that point and now I'm REALLY interested. Shipping across the pond is my only gripe.
They’d be practically giving them away! They’re definitely worth the money. Cheers!
The good news is that MusicMax Distribution is the new Ashdown rep in the US and they are carrying these basses! The first shipment is on the way and will be available in January.
The soap bar basses have the same problem the Fender Gold foil has, the E string has much lower output like the pickup is misaligned
I just can’t understand why they don’t make the pickups a bit wider, it’s so simple! I can’t bear string volume imbalance! I also get hives when a string doesn’t pass squarely over a pickup pole!
@@Bassman1999 I think it is because they are being true to the vintage specs but the Teisco basses they were in back then had narrower string spacing. It is just poor judgment on the pickup makers part
Not sure about the Lowrider thing. I am very interested to try locally in Germany. Don't know if activeness is the way to go here to be honest. I like the basic thunderbird tone. Always not sure about size, neck dive, 3 point bridge.
Man I wish these guys would direct ship to the US. That green saint soap makes me drool.
Are these all rear routed for the pickups? :) they would look really good without the ugly pickguards!
Those Saint Soaps sound phenomenal
Except there's no low E on both models. Something's wrong with that pickup.
The Saint has a GORGEOUS tone and the colorrr 😩😩😩😩 i’ve been looking for a new bass, this might be it!!
Hey Jonny, I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for this rundown of the roasted bases. Out of interest, does the PJ Saint have the same Jazz Bass style neck profile (with the 38mm nut) that the Saint Soap has? Ashdown's website doesn't make this clear.
Did you get to play the short scale too, outside of this vid? That's the one that I'm really interested in.
Love your videos and love your bass tone even more is there anyway you can post your GK with ampeg cab settings?
Great to see some affordable basses with nice colors. Hate that standart red, yellow, blue. Nice color picking and props for fitting that market. Roasted sounds also cool but never played one. First saw this with Sire basses.
Cheers for the video. Can you confirm the Lowrider has active pickups? So where is the battery beeing placed?
They are passive, they do have a cavity routed for an active circuit should you want to put it in though, not worth a battery honestly, the passive side you can easily get tones
@@pilummurialis6490 passive is the key for me anyways.
I'd love to hear them all with some fuzz on them too. Nice review though. I think I'd agree about the J pickup on the Saint. I'm not usually a fan of a bridge pickup on it's own, but that sounds like it imght be useable!
I just wish Ashdown would match their product annoucements with the availability of the product. Images of the roasted Capri have been around since January on their Facebook. It's October and they're still only at pre-orders. There isn't any point trying to create a buzz around their products if people can't actually get their hands on them.
Love the shapes and colours, some interesting looking stuff
Something a bit different! 👌
Great review! I need that lowrider asap
Thank-you!
Those spectacles work for you Jonny. 👍🏻
Why thank-you!
Looks nice! but why no 5 stringers?
The E string on the green bass is quiet. Perhaps the pickup isn't catching the string. too small. Check it)
On it
Same thing for the blue one strung with roundwounds. Such a shame. It would have been a great bass otherwise.
Liking the PJ version. Very tempting.
Me too. So good!
interesting! They all look like the ideal mid-range choice to me
That’s a good way to put it!
What flats are on the saint soap? That's my favourite sound here.
Thomastik Infelds 😊
Oh, the Lowrider is so brutally affordable and it seems to sound great!
Brutally affordable. That should’ve been the video title
Honestly the low rider is really doing it for me it’s making me want to justify buying one 😭
What about neck dive, was that an issue with the roasted sainted?
No issues with any apart from the thunderbird
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Do you know when the roasted saint will be available for purchase? They look really cool! Thanks for reviewing them.
I liked the soap pickup basses best for tone. The lowrider is not for me with its looks, neck dive and too bassy boominess. I pre-ordered the Saint P-J in onyx green because I want that versatility and it didn't disappoint me in this sound demo at all. Apparently Ashdown take delivery of these roasted affordable basses in November. Thanks for demo. I hope mine is good when it arrives but I'm capable of set up and ironing out any minor bugs. Glad I ordered mine based on this review, Jonny.
Congrats!! I’m very tempted to get the Saint in Green too. Soooo good!
They appear to be tremendous value for money and have some individuality with the Ashdown bass amp heritage.@@JonnyDibble
I'm really sad now that they didn't take off like they could have :(
Great review! Could you please tell them to make a lefty model? 🥺😅
Thank-you! I’m seeing them next week so I’ll pass it on
Jonny, all the bases you have came with Ashdown gig bags. Do you know if that will be the case with ones supplied on pre orders by the likes of me from Ashdown?
Hi! So to the best of my knowledge, they don’t come with gig bags, this was just the case with the proto ones I unboxed
Thanks, Jonny - I thhught as much - shame, as those gig bags looked decent. I hope they pack my order well!@@JonnyDibble
Did they announce when they will start shipping these out?
November at some point I believe!
@@JonnyDibble Thanks!
Thank you Johnny, for this video! I am a huge fan of your channel.
Love the basses, the neck and green color look fantastic.
But, I feel like almost every bass that is reviewed sounds great and punchy. This is probably because of the fresh strings. I have once ordered the Paranormal jazz bass because of good reviews, but it was extremely underwhelming and low in output in real life.
I mean you kinda have to compare them to a Reverend now. Almost identical shape!
I think its interesting to add KGs to the weight as well, like what isnt it just a few countries that use LBs? anyways, great video!
Yeah my bad. I blindly went off my scales in a hurry!
Alright. after finishing the video. I still want to get my hands on a lowrider. I was in musicstore cologne last saturday and tried out some basses. I like the shape of the T-Bird, but I absolutely hate glossy necks. It just doesn't feel right for me. And I love roasted maple necks with satin finish. Oooh yeah. So this might be the one for me. On the other hand, I also tested an Ibanez SR300 something which is only slightly more expensive and stuck in my head since.
The necks are all so nice!
A thunderbird with a normal bridge? You have my attention
impossible to purchase unfortunately :c
For the record, the Ashdown Capri, while having a great neck, good soldering wrt pots & jack, nice fretwork etc has one HUGE fundamental flaw....the pickup. The E string is noticeably quieter than the ADG strings. Im so pissed of with it that I have ordered a 12k toaster alnico rail pickup from Dave Konig at Retrovibe Basses (nice guy, I bought his Stinger pre-amp, which is an homage to the pre-Ernie Ball Musicman pre-amp found in the original Leo Fender designed 'Stingray').
The fact that Ashdown think this is OK to release to the world speaks volumes (if only the E string spoke volumes). I love the shape of the Capri, the neck is great, fretwork all good....but that pickup sucks-ass. As an addendum, there is plenty of room in the cavity routing at the back for a little pre-amp and 9v battery too ;-)
Also goes to show that some 'influencers' are nothing but corporate whores.
Lastly, the Capri suffers from near suicidal neck-dive, don't even think of slinging it round your neck on a slippy nylon/polyester strap. I have mine on a nice fat suede-sheepskin backed 'Perri’s Leathers Ltd.' 'fat' bass strap...ergo, it stays put.
I wish Ashdown instruments were easier to find in the US.
We needed a win over here
Looks good from far , 67min until I know if this will be my next bass...
But which?!
@@JonnyDibble the green one?
So I better try to find a 40th Ann. Squier pbass?
@@w.callens1629 That and the Saint are very comparable! For a straight P sound, the Squier is great. If you want a little more, you will not be disappointed with the Saint
If you're in the US shipping will be the deterent on the Ashdown series. The Squier 40th anniversary series are currently on sale for $299 and some places include free shipping so that would definitely be the best value.
Are those soapbars humbuckers? They look an awful lot like that Gretsch G2220 pickups…
Not humbucker, no. Same as the Gretsch au suppose then!
To bad these are so hard to get in the US.
Hu hu Lakland headstock👌
So good
Roasty toasty
Boasty with your mosty toasty roasty
The single pickup ones don't have any definition in the notes. You can't hear the E string properly....not the best sounding basses in my opinion. Maybe the PJ model will do the job but the rest not really....
looks suspiciously like a Reverend.
You have to try really hard NOT to look like a badass with that low rider!
Saint is the best. Lowrider you can barely hear
Please review the vintage basses
Might have some on the way, might not 🤭🤐😇
