This stuff all looks so amazing but I am just so confused haha I watched your “Obsidian for non coders” video and it was so great and then I jumped over to watching all your dnd videos because I’m specifically getting into obsidian for the dnd side of things. However, the basic stuff in that video did not even come close to preparing me for all of this and it’s just all so overwhelming. Are you planning on making a “D&D vaults in obsidian for non coders”? In particular, the plugins that you used to create sessions and notes, as well as how you created the resource vault that has your sourcebooks (and how you embed those as well). Totally understandable if you don’t plan on it anytime soon, but if not is there anything else you’d point me to? Regardless, all these resources are so cool, and thank you so much for putting out all this content!
I have watched many TTRPG obsidian videos. Most are too much for just dipping my toe in the water. OR to little too actually help with a quick set up. I was losing hope, and was thinking of just sticking with OneNote. This video was perfect. The lower left hand corner showing keystrokes was very helpful. Your channel may be my GOTO for obsidian knowledge.
Mike Shea (Sly Flourish) is the best. I used his Notion template for GM logs forever. But now you have me rethinking my entire campaign journal. So glad I found your channel, thanks for the awesome guides.
Because of this video, I'm finally, soberly considering combining my disparate ttrpg vaults into a single vault. It seems like the more campaigns I juggle, I would save far more time if all my automation efforts were consistent and in one vault. The consistent frontmatter across various files is really cool. I tried out the approach of giving different types of files their own completely unique frontmatter (e.g., NPCs have a lot of different fields from, say, Quest files), but in the end, I didn't get as much value from the added complexity. Seeing the way these are predictable and more generic, plus additional frontmatter that is unique to a particular file type, makes me think it would be easier overall to manage. With this being said, I have a more generic DM workshop vault that I've been using to build out quests, items, monsters, etc. It seems like, from the way the vault in this video is set up, the DM workshop materials are also in this vault. I guess the main thing that trips me up is quick switching to the right world / campaign / quest / etc.
Yeah, I also tried to have differents of frontmatter, but in the end decided it's really more trouble than it's worth. After all, it's not like it harms anything if some frontmatter is not used by a particular type of note... I separate the "DM workshop stuff" in another vault, actually, mostly because I don't want to accidentally publish/share someone else's work but still want to be able to access it myself. I link between vaults quite a bit. Not to be too on the nose, but have you tried the core plugin Quick Switcher? I use that to go back and forth between campaigns. :)
@@nicolevdh Oh yes, I make pretty heavy use of quick switcher. I think my main problem is the number of files that will eventually have the same name. I've seen on your other videos where you'll have some shorthand before the file name to help narrow the results to a particular system or campaign. While in the middle of DM'ing, I have a harder time curating my quick switcher path for something like a particular campaign or locale, because I'll be so focused on keeping things moving. It might just be something to get used to, because the benefits of having this one ttrpgs vault really makes me want to retrain these hands, haha.
Ah, I see. Have you tried assigning aliases? That's what I do-- I give campaigns a quick name that I can type to get to a page that otherwise would have different versions, like world or session pages. I know Leah Fergusson (whom I interviewed here about her TTRPG setup) uses a Johnny Decimal system to assign numbers to certain notes, so that she can use them as a quick shortcut. That works well too!
How do you get the paragraph section for the recap and summary is there a code that I'm missing? And also how do you get the new template to repopulate with an additional number going from session one to session two in the title field??
It was a bit confusing the first watch through but I'm sure re-watching like I always do will help me comprehend as it always does. But very enjoyable and inspirational to watch and again I will be re-watching to figure out how you did your magic.
I was watching this with a keen interest. Will these techniques work on an iPad? Just wondering as I don’t have a Mac. Good to see something relevant to D&D and useful tech. Subscribed and thanks!
I've finally been convinced to dive into Obsidian, so I'm moving my Apothecaria materials over and am trying to figure out how to set up some systems for playing. I think I'm not quite well-versed/fluent enough to implement much of the stuff in this video, but I'll keep it in mind and hopefully this little seed will germinate. I use a lot of random tables, so that's the part that I'm most excited about currently.
I'm also very interested in the auto-collation of things like town residents. Would save me a lot of duplicated effort trying to have all information in all relevant places! Just need to figure out how to do it.
Yeah, I showed a lot of things in this video that were the product of a lot of time spent refining what I wanted, and that unfortunately has meant that some of the complexity would be unnecessary for others. Go slow! Add stuff in only when you need it. :)
@@nicolevdh I have made a little progress in the intervening days! Your video about Obsidian for non-programmers is a great beginner touchstone for a bunch of useful things (even though I AM a programmer)! I have also pieced together that dynamicness is achieved with the help of YAML front matter and dataview. So I have some very very basic bits of that going on. (Though, this is my current understanding, so I may be mostly wrong) There are still things I know can probably be automated, but I haven't figured out how yet. But it is nice to be figuring out Obsidian through RPG notes because I already know a lot of things and have wished for them to be connected. It's easier to add information and see the cool Obsidian stuff than I think it would be if I were cataloging a couple of notes a day about my daily life.
Hey! RPG Manager encourages planning by scenes-- it is an almost novel-like approach to planning D&D games. If that sounds like how you plan, it's great! I personally follow more of the "Lazy GM" method, and I also really like to involve my players in the world and story creation, so I found planning by scene quite restrictive. YMMV!
Great video! It gave me lots of ideas. I'm trying to figure out how to roll 2d20 and not have them summed so that I can use Obsidian for running Star Trek adventures. Does anyone know a way to do that?
Hi Nicole, I've been really enjoying your videos on Obsidian for the past couple of weeks. I've been in a rabbit hole researching Obsidian and noticed you offer your templates, setup and plugins through Patreon. I would love to support you and get access to those files because I just don't have the time to set everything up myself. I have a few questions: Do you have a different templates/setup for your personal/work and your TTRPG? Is it a single file that has everything already setup and I can download, plug and go? Thanks for your time and looking forward to your reply!
Hi! Yes, I have different templates set up for TTRPG and non-TTRPG stuff, and also (on Patreon) have different vaults. It's not a single file, but it's a single folder/vault, yes! The reason I shared the whole vault rather than individual templates is so that you can open the vault and then all the plugin settings, templates, etc. are already set up and ready to go. :)
Specific to Initiative Tracker: So, I'm having an issue with designing encounter that has any creature with a negative initiative modifier. When adding a player or monster that has -1 to initiative checks (like the Iron Golem), it confuses the encounter builder window and sets its initiative to 0 without allowing you to add the creature to the encounter builder (initiative is set to 0 and will not allow itself to be re-rolled). Has anyone found a work-around? Edit: To make things more complicated, it seems to work when adding a monster to the tracker from an encounter table in a note. Of course, telling it to recalculate initiative from within the tracker makes it seize up and it will not do any recalculation.
🤯⚔ Gah! NICOLE!? I only got obsidian about a week ago having *never* used it before and knowing *very* little on what it could do, how to code, and heck I didn't even known the basic markdowns like checklists and headers! That being said, in only a WEEK (a week!!??) through watching mostly your videos as well as a few others, I've got mine all ready to go for creating my own Solo TTRPG Games using Mythic GME 2E!! EE!! ☺ I've gone from knowing barely *anything* to using Leaflet, my own Templates as well as Templater and QuickAdds. I made my own Custom CSS for Callouts specific to Mythic. I've used Dataview for lists and tables on all sorts of things like, which NPC's, Locations, and Factions show up/are linked in each of my Episodes (basically my sessions or journal entries as I write my solo game play more like a novel than theater of the mind), to Tables on my NPCs and all their most important YAML properties, and even more on my world note page. Honestly, dataview is a learning curve, but wow so powerful!! I haven't made any buttons but only cause the buttons community plugin right now isn't going to be updated anymore and I don't want to mess myself up by starting my base with them now that I know. Excalidraw is great for filling in all of Mythic's Adventure sheets, and on the fly maps with leaflet!
