  • What should we do if we’re bored with Bible study? Are the Scriptures merely a collection of rules to be obeyed and facts to be memorized? In this message, R.C. Sproul defines what it means to read the Bible “existentially” as he looks at the richness, drama, and passion of the biblical narrative.

The greatest narrator in modern times if not into antiquity (without fear of exaggeration).
One wonders what cadence or other distinction Spurgeon commanded.... or even what golden tones in which George Whitfield placed emphasis, but even they surely would not have had the hold of anticipation and emotive range accentuated by the piercing expressions and seismic thunder of this signature delivery... all captured at the right time -for the Saints' preservation and "existential" edification- indeed!
    This is preaching Coram Deo.

These are gold mine teachings which every serious student of the word should watch and learn intently🤔Thank you for posting this great series of Knowing Scriptures🙏😇 From my own mental digestion, this could be read as to get real with the actual situation in the Bible, they are real persons in actual stories not just characters in a drama and therefore their feelings as real people need to be considered in understanding what happened - that is what it means to read the Scripture existentially.

"Reading the Bible Existentially: Knowing Scripture"
Wow kind Sir..let's see...with NO disrespect at all. For...
The first full bible; was translated (hand writing only); in 'circa 382 AD. By Pope Damasus of the "Roman Catholic Cult" (as I say). When He paid an "Expert" languish; in "Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek".
(Using "manuscripts* handed down years by years. And mostly by mouth to mouth, since there were NO "printing presses" yet")
His name was: "St. Jerome"...Latin in full: Eusebius Hieronymus, pseudonym Sophronius, (born c. 347, Stridon, Dalmatia-died 419/420, Bethlehem, Palestine; feast day September)...
And when He had finished translating those 80 manuscripts; that Pope had given him to translate: 39 OT, 14 Apocrypha and 27 NT; the Pope named the 80 books, "Latin Vulgate". To this day.
And that the ONLY hand written bible; would be for centuries. Because the Printing Press would NOT come into being, until 1450 AD. And it was a printing machine; perfected and ready to use commercially: named "The Gutenberg press".
But, in the meantime, there were many letters written mouth to mouth of scriptures; and they created enumerable hand written bibles with 80 books. That would have been downgraded; into 66 books in 1885 AD, like today. By throwing out the Apocrypha books. Sad.
So in, 1535 AD: Myles Coverdale’s Bible; The First Complete Bible printed in the English Language (80 Books). And it would stay 80 books in ALL full bibles until 1885 AD: The “English Revised Version” Bible; The First Major English Revision of the KJV; with 66 books!
Now I said all the above to ask you kind Sir. WHICH scripture and/or a full bible; with either 80 books or 66 books are you talking about?. And what version are you talking about? Huh? For even the KJV; has 3 different versions. Do the research.
Nor...any of the "enumerable" of other English bibles; that were printed over multi centuries; are the same!. And most have major differences. Oh yes. Do the research! NO disrespect! Promise. Just stating the facts brother in Jesus...
...In any case kind Sir, Please Pray OFTEN and Praise Jesus OFTEN; for He is the ONLY true "God Almighty"; there will ever have been. And may Jesus bless you and yours always. AMEN!
    * Here's the scoop...From the Web: "Where did the Bible come from? Have you got the original writings that came from the hand of Moses, or Paul, or John? No, none of it, not a scrap or a letter is available today!"
Sad, but OH so true! May Jesus have mercy...

And most people are probably not aware of the fact that the common Bible of our Founding Father's was NOT the "KJV". By the time the KJV became popular, there were already plenty of Settlers in this country. They were using the GENEVA Bible!
So, when people say, "This Country was founded on the Word of God"; and then refer to the KJV as the "Word of God"; they have their facts completely messed up. For this nation WAS founded as a Christian Nation; and they didn't initially use the KJV.
Of course, neither one is the "Word of God"; but it just goes to show how people can say one thing; and then, without realizing it, lie out the other side of their mouth.

    • @robmarshall956
      @robmarshall956 2 года назад +2

Wow Dee It was God, and God alone, who determined which books belonged in the Bible. It was simply a matter of God’s imparting to His followers what He had already decided. The human process of collecting the books of the Bible was flawed, but God, in His sovereignty, and despite our ignorance and stubbornness, brought the early church to the recognition of the books He had inspired.
Determining the canon was a process conducted first by Jewish rabbis and scholars and later by early Christians. Ultimately, it was God who decided what books belonged in the biblical canon. A book of Scripture belonged in the canon from the moment God inspired its writing. It was simply a matter of God’s convincing His human followers which books should be included in the Bible.
Compared to the New Testament, there was much less controversy over the canon of the Old Testament. Hebrew believers recognized God’s messengers and accepted their writings as inspired of God. While there was undeniably some debate in regards to the Old Testament canon, by A.D. 250 there was nearly universal agreement on the canon of Hebrew Scripture. The only issue that remained was the Apocrypha, with some debate and discussion continuing today. The vast majority of Hebrew scholars considered the Apocrypha to be good historical and religious documents, but not on the same level as the Hebrew Scriptures.
For the New Testament, the process of the recognition and collection began in the first centuries of the Christian church. Very early on, some of the New Testament books were being recognized. Paul considered Luke’s writings to be as authoritative as the Old Testament (1 Timothy 5:18; see also Deuteronomy 25:4 and Luke 10:7). Peter recognized Paul’s writings as Scripture (2 Peter 3:15-16). Some of the books of the New Testament were being circulated among the churches (Colossians 4:16; 1 Thessalonians 5:27). Clement of Rome mentioned at least eight New Testament books (A.D. 95). Ignatius of Antioch acknowledged about seven books (A.D. 115). Polycarp, a disciple of John the apostle, acknowledged 15 books (A.D. 108). Later, Irenaeus mentioned 21 books (A.D. 185). Hippolytus recognized 22 books (A.D. 170-235). The New Testament books receiving the most controversy were Hebrews, James, 2 Peter, 2 John, and 3 John.
The first “canon” was the Muratorian Canon, which was compiled in AD 170. The Muratorian Canon included all of the New Testament books except Hebrews, James, 1 and 2 Peter, and 3 John. In AD 363, the Council of Laodicea stated that only the Old Testament (along with one book of the Apocrypha) and 26 books of the New Testament (everything but Revelation) were canonical and to be read in the churches. The Council of Hippo (AD 393) and the Council of Carthage (AD 397) also affirmed the same 27 books as authoritative.
