The only mistake Norman Lear ever made was not casting Maude in more episodes of All in the Family. The banter between Archie and Maude was comedy gold!
It wasn't Norman Lear's fault. Apparently, it was Fred Silverman (CBS executive) who rushed to give Bea Arthur her own show. That's what Norman Lear said years ago. The irony is that Bea Arthur had a long career on Broadway, way before she entered television. She knew both O’Connor and Stapleton from the Broadway days, and she was an old friend of Norman Lear. She didn’t want to be on tv, but relented when Lear begged her, and she’d work with her old friends (Caroll & Jean) from the old days.
Mr. Lear or anyone else who actually knows, I know that Norman Lear developed the character of Maude at least in part with Bea Arthur in mind to play the role, but has anyone heard him speak or write of where his inspiration for the character came from? These Lear productions are precious to me and an invaluable part of our culture and history and in many ways remain as relevant today as ever. Most of them being, especially but not certainly only, virtually every episode of “All in the Family.”.
