I was born in 2008, and started getting in to aviation about 5 years ago, so unfortunately I wasn’t around to experience the BAC-111, 737-200, 747, ETC. But eventually the aircraft we have right now will eventually fade off like these did. It’s nice to have timeless classics like this to watch so I can get a glimpse of what aviation looked like in its prime. Thank you!
I was born in '99 and feel the same about a lot of these now long-gone aircraft. My one true hurt is of course never seeing Concorde fly (that I remember anyway!)
I was born in ‘96, missed the glory-days of the 70’s/80’s/90’s but grew up in the 00’s and luckily, remember seeing Concorde a few times, never flew on her though☹️
I was born in 1986 and took for granted the MD-80's, the DC10's and the 727's. Even BAC 1-11's I wasn't too fussed about as they were regulars over my house. But now I miss these types greatly. I remember growing bored of flying on 757's every time I went on holiday now I'd give anything to fly on one again! Things go in cycles, the 787 will be a collectors item in years to come, but one thing that will never return after the early 00's is the smoke and the noise. Sadly, the gas guzzlers belong in the past.
The great BAC 111! During landing mode, engines sang like Van McCoy Hustle intro whenever the pilot suddenly reduced throttle power! I used to burst out laughing! They went "OHOOOO!"
I just LOVE classic planes, I used to live very close to Amsterdam airport Schiphol, and remember the !-11, 707, DC-8 ,tridents and Vickers Viscounts taking off over my house........those were the days! Thanks for the GREAT video!
Love this video, takes me back to the late 60's when I would fly AA or MO BAC-111s from LGA or JFK up to BUF. Always a great flight and the sound at the back always reminded me of hearing a fighter jet take off. The aircraft now are much more tame.
What a f###### magnificent row these jets made. I flew on two around 1992 with Dan Air from LGW & the first was a night flight. Prob a 6000ft run up with a take off speed around 170mph. The "Jack Russell Terrier" of the sky's. Bring them back!
My very first flight was on a Dan Air BAC1-11 from Gatwick to Alicante and that was back in 1979. Loved it and that’s what made me go into the travel industry as a career when I left school. I loved Dan Air B727-200advanced best of all. Flew that girl Gatwick to Malta in 1984.
Flew many times from Pittsburgh, PA to Greensboro, NC in the mid 80's on the 1-11, as a USAir employee. Loved that aircraft, miss my airline days. So grateful.
i flew dan air back in early 90s from east midlands to malaga . All i could remember about the plane was it had engines at the back and was small, for years i have wonderd what plane it was, thought it was 727 but after a bit of research tonight i see it was a 111. great vid and i agree with AGrandit the future looked alot better back in 92...
Philippine Airlines (my home country's flag carrier) used to fly BAC 1-11 Series 500s on most of their major domestic services into and out ot Manila; in fact, I NEVER forget my very first airplane flight on one - from Manila to Bacolod - when I was 3 years old. Seeing this video after all these years suddenly made me feel like a kid that young again....
I'm in the UK and flew on British Caledonian 1-11s as a child, mostly to Spanish holiday destinations. I even remember the name of one of them; Isle of Tiree!
Brilliant vids. Landing and takeoff. I flew Dan Air to MIR 23/5/90 on a 1-11. My first flight. Would love to ID the plane. Thanks for the memories.... Keep em comin'
That really is lovely. Thank you so much for posting! I flew London/Newcastle with DA & BA regularly during the early 1980s. BA were using new 737-200s along with older Tridents into Heathrow. DA 'mainly' flew BAC 1-11s into Gatwick.. It was not uncommon to find an HS748 allocated on the route, but nobody minded. The 90min. or so turboprop flight was always pleasant and Dan Air cabin staff were great. Cruising altitude in the 748 was a mere 14,000 ft.
Flew on Dan Air twice. 1972 Gatwick-Majorca and 1974 Gatwick-Malaga. We were supposed to fly Dan Air from Gatwick-Majorca in 1977 but ATC called a 24-hour strike, we were put up in a hotel in Brighton for the night and flew out the next day on Spantax! Don't remember the make of planes as I was too young.
Last time on a 1-11 out of JER to BRSsat in seat 1A on climbout I could here the lady oposite un wrapping her boiled sweet given out by the Cabin staff... I then realised what a contrast it was, as below us the locals in JER must have been saying what a F****** row that plane is making.
1990s - Smoking allowed (except pipes and cigars), RR Speys whistling. Fowler flaps. None of the turbulence that afflicts EVERY flight these days... where did we go wrong?
RR speys are unique class engines. But i think that are "bypass turbojet" engines, turbofans normally have one or two stages of lower pressure compressors bigger than the others to act as propellers, so these engines has the classic "humming" sound at full power. But the speys have all the low pressure compressor acting as a propeller with a low-bypass to send air to the next compressor, so that only allows a small "hum" at full power. But, SOUNDS LIKE GOD :D
Fantastic video, thanks for posting. I fllew in Dan Air 1-11's and 727's during the 1980's as a passenger. Can you post more? Do you have the 727 or Comet on film?
@hargohargo2 Reason they reduce power on the engines shortly after take-off is to restrict the spped of the aircraft (usually to around 250knt under 8000ft) and also if they were kept at full power for much longer they would simply explode!
@@SimonLoweAviation Ok, I was just asking since it sounds very different from the videos of the business jet access BAC-111 which was fitted with stage III hushkits. Have a good day!
The planes back then had better power to weight ratios and yet notice how the takeoff has a much shallower angle of attack. These days they climb very steeply to clear the crowded airspace as fast as possible.
A night saver? Yes indeed! During autumn 1985, i had nothing but nightmares throughout the night. Dreams of devil crocodiles chasing me! Thanks to a landing 111 passing overhead waking me up! Even my mum thanked the plane for saving me from having a prolonged nightmare!
@greengoblin200 The 111 did not have great short field takeoff performance at high gross weight. Additionally no leading edge slats for extra lift and lower takeoff speeds hence the long takeoff roll. In this video perhaps it was a high temperature and I bet also calm wind. These also go against your takeoff performance.
Amazingly noisy jet...Having lived next to a runway in Louisville in the 1970s, I used to hear these jets take off (Allegheny/US Air)...my ears are still ringing....
Dan Dare ! all their aircraft were previously owned by 3rd world countries It took some guts getting on to a Dan Air flight to Malaga in 1980 ......The previous week a Dan Air flight flew into a mountain. Maintenance for all Dan Air aircraft was done in Lasham aerodrome nr Alton Hampshire......I knew some one who worked there......Maintenance was always done on the cheap
I worked for Dan Air as a stewardess and flew BAC1 11.great to watch this video.
@Mini van I worked for them late 70s early 80s .the 500 series was the best loved the plane.

I can't begin to tell you how grateful I am for this. Will always be my favourite A/C
And me,a proper Aircraft.
Indeed. A proper Aircraft, beautifully crafted and assembled. Rock solid. I miss it so much.
You don't look old enough to remember a bac 1-11 hannah
The great BAC 111! During landing mode, engines sang like Van McCoy Hustle intro whenever the pilot suddenly reduced throttle power! I used to burst out laughing! They went "OHOOOO!"
I remember '92.
The future looked a lot better back then. :)

Remeber it well.. flying to Jersey with my family as a kid... ended up flying the B757/767 for BA... lovely memory thank you !
Thank you for this, it brings back many happy memories.

Wow amazing video! The taxiing speeds were super fast back then!
Went on a dan air back in the mid 70,s was a bone shaker lol

I just adore the sound of those RR SPeys on full take off power - excellent video mate!
My goodness those 1-11s were noisy! Love it!
that`s not noise-that´s MUSIC
@@Texasstyle67 that's not noise-that's disgusting EAR RAPE

I flew on a European Air Ferries 111 on 20 August 1998! Manchester to Pisa and return two weeks later! Ultimate reliability! Loved it!
A true beauty ! You knew you were flying then !
I'm in the UK and flew on British Caledonian 1-11s as a child, mostly to Spanish holiday destinations. I even remember the name of one of them; Isle of Tiree!
Wow, even in 1992 you had an amazing camera. Great work as always. 5 stars.
Don't you just love the scream of Spey's

I remember the spantax cv990's at Manchester! Thanks for the comment 🙂
Stunning interior view of a classic aircraft!!
just listen to the wail of them Spey`s...... magical !
I cut my teeth on the 1-11.. we had all of DA's inc the LOVELY 119 seaters LOL!
ROCKET! Loved these little jets…
The last aircraft I flew on before my phobia kicked in: Dan Air BAC One Eleven, Gerona -> Luton 10th October 1984. I never flew again.
My first flight was in a B/Cal BAC 1/11 in 1982. They were so loud, especially the reverse thrust on landing.
Used to love flying Dan-Air 1-11's to Aberdeen from LGW
@knaphilllee I love the noice from those spey's on start up take of as well as landing.
I agree, I use to love hearing, the Bac 1-11 start up at Manchester airport in the 70s, when you could go on the terraces, at the airport.
Thought it had a different variant of the Spey, but sounds exactly the same as an F28! Great video!
The 1-11 retired in 2019. Wonderful plane
Wow, the performance couldn't any more different to the rocket-like British Midland DC9s I flew on a lot in the early 90s!
I worked for Dan Air as station mánager at MAD airport. Great times.
Used to fly them in the 60s on Braniff in the U.S.

Dan Air went into Fuel oil bunkering for ships (Davies & Newman bunkering) in the 90's. They still used the compass & flag logo on their letterhead.

What an amazing video!

This could well be the first plane I ever flew on as it was a Dan Dare BAC One Eleven from Gatwick to Majorca in January 1992.
Flew on many a Dan Air 1-11...Great to watch but a bit sad.
how lovely is it to see Caledonian Tristar and 757 at the hangars on rotatio - why on earth didn't they keep that heritage going??
Great piese of film, it would have been nice to hear the start up of this BAC 1-11

this has been my first air company n 1985!
Does anyone know why the flap drive on a BAC-1-11 makes the sound it does for both extension or retraction? Sounds like a squeaky door hinge.
Simon Lowe, You're the best!!!!
Oh simon i have a question, did this BAC-111 have hushkits?
Not sure about that. Sorry. Filmed in 1992 and it was a scheduled shuttle flight between Gatwick to Manchester. Cheers.
@@SimonLoweAviation Ok, I was just asking since it sounds very different from the videos of the business jet access BAC-111 which was fitted with stage III hushkits. Have a good day!

111 on take off? Just like Slade! Come On Feel The Noize!
What about the Trident? Definitely a Death Metal plane! Second loudest after Concorde during take off! An ear bleeder!

Lasham is a pretty cool place tbh, gliders, commercial heavys in for maintenance, cleaning or painting, G.A. stuff plus random bits.
No, sorry.
The only aborted take off I experienced as a passenger was on one of these. It's got good brakes.
AHhh thats soo weird my mother was pregnant with me when this was taken!!!
Worst plane I was ever on. The cabin compression was so bad my ears were killing me.
