UPDATE: There is no separate control unit for the TomTom navigation system. The GPS/cellular module is actually fully disabled, and no longer updates. The data that is in the device, including searchable destinations and "current" location are all cached and no longer update! For more information:

I think I might try the foil trick. I still have most of the roll left from fabricating my hat. 😂👷
Gotta stay safe somehow. 🧙🤣
Be careful! You start disconnecting things and it could void your warranty.😊
Oh no, this won't void any sort of warranty. I did call to also deactive the automatic account that they created and confirmed that if we are able to unplug this it doesn't violate any warranty. If we were to cut this or damage anything in there it would certainly void that portion of the warranty though!
Nucamp is my guess too. Just because of the way you were drooling at the factory.
Nothing that couldn't be mopped up!
NICE TRUCK!!!!
🔮 nucamp...
Oooh. Interesting guess there... 😎
Incredibly interesting. You should get a million views on that. I wonder if Ram will send you a notice that you need to get that "fixed". I'm sure they will notice it's not connecting.
I will never be able to do that myself though, when I do get a newer truck. Darnit.
Honking the horn scared one of my cats lol.
Nice to see a peek of Lenny.
Thanks!! Every vehicle is a little different, I should do a whole series on just this topic alone for all modern vehicles. 😂 We've not had a CEL since, surprisingly. I'm waiting for it though. The app still thinks we're parked with the same mileage prior to us disconnecting the unit. Sorry to your kitty!!
this telematics unit likely is datacollection.
they can harvest your movements. your purchace habits from your location data/gps
know your commonly traveled locations to market to you better. etc
Their privacy policy states that it is! Pretty wild stuff that they expect 99.999% of people will never read that policy, let alone understand it.

I wonder if disconnecting the roof top antenna would prevent communications with mother ship?
I suspect it might disable GPS and maybe Sirius, but I suspect that the cell card is more self contained and doesn't require the external antenna. I may be wrong though!
I did the privacy opt out. Thanks for sharing that link. I wasn't aware that it was available.
Glad I could help!
Must have missed this. Where can I find this privacy opt-out link? Thanks.
@@rd1860 it's all in the pinned comment there with everything you should need.
@@CozyLivingMachine Got it--Thank you.
Does taking the panel apart void warranty?
Not if you don't break anything! There should be no reason anyone would know you were in there and no way to break the engine from in there, so even if they voided your glove box/Telematics warranty it should affect anything else. Then again, who knows, they can certainly try whatever they want to avoid paying for repairs.
Thanks for this video. This is what every owner of their truck should be doing. As well as checking to see if a GPS unit is doubled installed (before the ODB port).
Our privacy should be respected. I am curious if the selling of your data is disclosed anywhere in your purchase agreement? It's about time people are compensated for their data or completely opt out of it. No reason why a simple GPS antenna can't be configured for the head unit that doesn't cell/transmit the data.
I wonder if you can unblock and turn of these units using AlfaOBD ... but is for modifying up to 2023 models. May be something for someone with a truck with a few years older to check into.
Great point about the additional GPS module, that was the very first thing I checked! I'll have to reread the paperwork, but it wasn't clear language if it is included! I did look into the AlfaOBD module as well and found that it was only for the older trucks. I was hoping for that, I had something similar on a Jeep! Unfortunately, that unit didn't allow disabling of the cell modem.
I refused to sign up for uconnect when I bought my RAM new earlier this year. The dealer pushed VERY hard for me to do it but I refused.
There's a good reason for them to be interested in you signing in, there's plenty of money to gain from your data!
@@CozyLivingMachine I know that’s why I didn’t sign up for it. The dealer doesn’t get the money but Stellantis penalizes the dealers somehow if they don’t get people to sign up for it. Do you have to remove everything you did to unplug the connector for the module?
@Marklin15 if you can remove the radio you might be able to reach behind that module or your wiring may be even easier than this one with that connector on the side closer to the passenger rather than the engine, if that makes sense! Otherwise, getting in behind the glove box is the trick, it seems.
When the video hit 3:41, that was revealing. I realize you've taken issue with the steering column and a bit of carpet in the truck. but to gut the dash like that? Oh my gosh Joel, get some anger management help while you're still young.
All kidding aside, its amazing that you found your way to those Bluetooth bits and disabled 0them and got the dash put back together. What an effort but for worthy reasons. Not a pleasant thought that with that stuff in place, a hacker could manage to easily break in and do worse.
Rediculous how many things you can activate with the keyfob, was it?
HA. Just a reminder to never cross me... 🤣 I'm glad that I could spend a good bit of time and finally figure it out. That was the cellular modem and GPS that was disconnected, and I'm certain there is another subsystem that can also be disabled. It went back PERFECTLY, so I'm very glad about that! And yep, that was the keyfob. They really give you some options on that little thing!
So with this box being disabled, do you still have access to locate your vehicle on the app or through uconnect since you still have gps?
The GPS is fully disabled (this realization happened after creating this video, I pinned a comment about that) so nope, there is no vehicle tracking or locating whatsoever. There are plenty of alternatives still, and we use two of them to track the truck in the event that it's stolen!
Do you have the links to those alternatives? Looking for something that will will work and not be easy to find .
Also thanks for responding! Great detailed video!
@@nancynunez4805 Check out this article here :) protonvpn.com/blog/airtag-alternative
From what I understand they have a ATT sim card you can remove, to disable data and GPS.
For the past few years these have been integrated circuit SIMs, so nothing to remove unfortunately, much like the iPhone eSIMs. That would be nice to have though!
Does this mean you no longer get your monthly status update, ie: tire pressure, oil life, etc.?
Yep, exactly. Granted, they're absolutely of no use to me considering the truck screen will display that data, but nope, that doesn't show up any longer!
Very important video. We honestly need a video on how to do this for each vehicle out there :) Go for it man! In all seriousness, I'd love for you to come on my podcast and talk about this.
I don't understand why you would go through all that trouble when we all carry around a device in our pockets that does the same thing 24/7.
interesting the crap they put in vehicles these days
Good Job Joel ! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks!! 🤘😎
WOW! GOOD Job and AMAZING you spent over 6 HOURS to get to it and DISABLE Telematics! ANOTHER reason to be concerned about SPYING on us : ( KUDOS for your patience and skill in tearing you new vehicle apart to find it! ALL the BEST and ENJOY ! ! Cheers ! : )
They definitely made this much more difficult than they had to and reasonably should have. They also have misleading information online and don't have an opt-out function at all for this hardware. I sure hope this encourages many others to embark on this journey of disconnecting nonsense like this!
@@CozyLivingMachine Again, THANKS MUCH and WELL DONE indeed! ! : )
