- We found and bought a rare 1973 Volkswagen Sports Bug. Vw only produced 20,000 of these Beetles in two colors, blue and yellow. This Beetle will be getting a full restoration by Dubwerks. We have some work to do to get this one running correctly but this is a great start and was reasonably priced.

Cool ! Very rare hi Jason.
My friend had one back in 1983...hot stuff, and that yellow shined at nite.
well, I sold this one but Dubwerks just put a vid out of us buying another one :)
@@5150mxVW my friend bought his in Mass. way back when, good luck.
Man, do you bust chops on Duberks! LOL - he's a good sport.
Haha, we are painting the shop right now ....you are right , he’s getting paint everywhere and hearing about it ...but he is still painting 😁
He can’t contain his excitement
I like the marathon blue they came in as well
Me too , great color
Both the Blue & Yellow were Something else. .. A blue Sport Bug was in the neighborhood - viewed that puppy twice a day.
.. My '74 SB Sun Bug looked lame ... Although that Sun Bug made many a run to Killington, VT from the Northern NJ/NY state line... A good 5 to 6 hours without weather. .. Snow tires, ski rack & stereo .... Memory lane.
Superbug with the rear Porsche spoiler and mags look sick!
Had a yellow 74 with the auto stick back in the late 80's. Great car, hated the transmission. Flipped it for a nice profit.
Hi dub works!
He says Hi , we are painting the shop
Nice car. You’re a good friend to help him out.
Thanks AB , he’s expensive lol
This bug was named "Schwarz-gelber Renner" (Black & Yellow Runner) in Germany... It is great to see one here, in your channel.
Just found your channel - really enjoying it!
Greetings from the UK 👍🏻
Thank you for kind words much appreciated
I was an apprentice mechanic at a VW dealer in Calgary, Alberta when the Sports Bug arrived. We were disappointed that the engine was stock but otherwise thought they were pretty cool. With those fat Pirelli tires, I think they were actually a little slower than a stock Beetle. As I recall they were available in silver too. Can't remember the last time I saw one. Nice find. No gas heater I see. Driving a Beetle in our winters without a gas heater was pretty miserable.
It was a silver blue metallic, I had one once
Beetle drivers praying for a chinook. ❤
Thank you
OK Dubwerks, let the negotiations begin!! I love the banter between you to Jason. Those seats might be Josh's college fund, eh?
Yes! I told him on the way there he’s taking food out of Josh’s mouth haha
Interested in outcome of this bug. Very sentimental. My high school sweetheart had one in 1973 when I met him. It was new. 🥰❤️
Evans, Georgia. I was 15 years old. 64 now.
well i sold this one but we just bought another sports bug in better shape. Check out Dubwerks channel....awesome story, thank you for sharing
Rad Dude!! Bummer the seats are missing!!! So hard to find!!! My first beetle was a yellow 73 super!!!
You know you love it! Thanks for forking over the cash, and the storage, and the trailer, and the mechanical ability LOL
Congrats on securing your bucket list 1973 Volkswagen Sports Bug in saturn yellow !🏁🎯🍺🍹🍔🍟
OMG! Love the bantering! You give DubWerks such a bad time and he seems like such a nice young man. 😂 This bug seems to be in pretty good condition. Nice find!
I’m ripping him right now , he’s here painting the shop . I just saw his comment above yours . “ thanks “ holy moly that’s a rare word for him 🤣
Nice to see 1303 Super Beetles getting some praise for once!😮
👍
That's pretty much the same as the one I owned in 96ish. I couldn't get away with anything in that car because it was so easy to spot. I got a 82 in a 40mph speed trap with that car. I argued in court and the judge sided with me in the fact the car wouldn't do 82 in that distance off a cliff.
That's funny right there😆😆😆
You guys know how to live! Brought a smile this morning with your wit. Thanks!
great to hear, we thank you Thomas
Congratulations DubWerk on securing your bucket list 1973 Volkswagen Sun Bug !
I remember seeing the 1973 Sports Bug/Super Beetle in the dealer showroom in Watertown NY at Harblin Motors outer Washington St. Saturn Yellow - also a huge interest for me. The Finn family in Watson/Pine Grove, NY had one in Saturn Yellow. They also had a 1974 Volkswagen Thing in pumpkin orange with a fiberglass white top. They traded in their 1972 Super Beetle in green exterior, possibly Sumatra green, with Formula V gold stripes at bottom of doors for the 1973 Sports Bug. I have an original dealer Volkswagen Sports Bug brochure. It is a smaller brochure as Sports Bug was a limited-edition model. Also have an original Sun Bug brochure, as well as various VW model brochures from the 1970s. Am very interested in a 1974 Volkswagen Super Beetle with sunroof - the search continues ... Slainte' ! Cheers !
WOW nice car I love those supers, with us they were called 1303, I had many years a 1975 turquoise green 1303S still miss it😭make this yellow one healthy again👍please
Yellow beetles are awesome
👍👍
Hey Jason.....Nice find at least it's not loaded with pine cones! Lol .... Best of luck on getting her on the Rd. Great vidio! All was on the look for finding one!
I'm digging it. Looks like it is overall in good shape.
I had a very nice neighbor lady named Regina back in the early 90's that had one identical to this. I would always tell her how much I liked it and would ask her if I could buy it (this being roughly a couple years before I started driving.) She would always laugh it off, saying it wasn't worth buying. I wish I had persisted, I had no idea it was a special edition.
It was a sad day for me (but not for her) when it disappeared from our apartment parking lot in favor of a used base model Chevy Astro van, but she needed something bigger and newer to haul her 3 kids. Great memories. 😊
nice cool sport bug
Good to see him so “excited” 😂
Right ?!? You’d be pretty happy if I found you a bucket list car , set up the deal , bought / paid for it and trailered it home for you right ?!? Oh and got it running right 🤑
@@5150mxVW i completely agree! Just cool to see him so excited.
I looked at a sports bug when I was 17, my dads work colleague was selling it. It was everything I wanted. The price was just outside my budget and the seller wouldn’t move off their price.
Big fan of these Super Beetles, Even more when given the German street racer look :)
The German look , yes 👍...supers need the meaty tires to go with rest of the girth 😁😁
Hey 5150mxVW .... A great find !! .. I have a big ask; what is the size radial tire? .. I believe the OE tire fitted back in the day was the Pirelli CN36 Radial sized 175/70 HR15. ...I am hoping to not push my luck, another ask. .. What is the Sport wheel offset (ET) of the '73 Sport Bug's 5" X15" steel wheels? (The ET is stamped on the wheel.) I... Thanks in advance !! .... Cheers, Mike ... Vail, Colorado
P.S. .. Were fixing up our ole '79 SB Convertable.. My wife is the original owner / its been in heated storage since 1993.
P.S.S. .. The '70s period Michelin XzX and the Pirelli CN36 continue to available.. A set of 4 CN36 radials sized 175/70HR15" are mind boggling expensive @ $375. a piece through Coker Tire.
I like !
Excellent video Jason :) lots Volkswagen cars going fix up and keeping busy lots too!
Those seats that are installed in that sports bug right now are very unique. They were made for 1974 model year only. They were for the interlock system. The bottom vinyl has one strip that goes across and no other design on either the top or bottom parts of the seat. There is a electronic sensor inside the bottom that would indicate that there is occupants in the car. And the car wouldn't start until you would put on your seat belt and turned the ignition. I'm not too sure but they might of only kept that design for only a few months in 1974.
Had one just like it but Olympic blue. Great memories . God bless you guys as always.
Screw the haters. I can't wait to see the Super Beetle videos!
👍👍
Love the Sports Bugs! Try finding a Sports Ghia! Even more rare!
Haha ! There’s one sitting on the side of my shop 😁
@@5150mxVW That’s awesome! Love all your finds!
Awesome looking car man, great videos too
You guys should come to Florida and see possibly buy mint bugs that have been sitting in people's garages that have no rust
Nice to see some sport bug love!
Love my marathon blue sporty.
I do love the sport bugs, both colors 👍
Great find . Dosent look too bad of a project !!
Another great video featuring dub works .
Just a quick one , Dubwerks filmed some of the engine work , more soon on this sports bug on his channel. Thank you for all the support Marty, I appreciate it
So when is a date he’s going to be done with the shop . It’s going to be getting cold soon and you can’t be try to make new content outside all the time. But watching you push cars around in the snow would make some good content ha ha . Have a great week can’t wait to see more.
he's doing a full resto on the 63 ragtop so he will be there ....yes cold coming ...maybe sport bug in the snow :)
awesome video jason nice save
Thank u 34
Great video!
We had a 1970 Special Edition Beetle right off the show room floor. (Formula Vee). Cost $1000 more than one off the lot. If I had that thing today it would be worth some bucks. Cost $2600 when a plain beetle was going for $1600.
Hi guys. I am pretty sure that looks like the university of Queensland, Australia sticker on the rear window.
It is…
Found a yellow sport bug in a field last spring in MN. It is really, really rusty and not worth saving. But the seats are there. Could not get them at that time. I just passed through there last week, but nobody around. Guy has a bunch of other junk I could use, too. So I'll keep trying. Had a single turtleback wheel sitting in the back seat, and a bunch of boxes of NOS parts sitting around, too.
Not a fan of Super Beetles, but I like the oddball special models. Have owned a couple of 74 standard Love Bugs in Ravenna Green with the blacked out trim treatment. They had special upholstery, too, but it was very fragile so it didn't last long. Not sure if I have ever seen a nice original seat, only remnants of what they were.
Very nice.find!!!
We thank you Tim
nice job.
thank you Jim
Now we're really talking. Curved windscreen Superbug, Mine 75, complete with same rust , the specially designed Death wobble/shimmy ..'Only the best', when it comes to "New Cars' LOL Special Coooee ! To he who stands with hands in pockets ... Kind regards Alex
The 1975 Super Beetle, La Grande with Bosch L-jet fuel injection, rack & pinion steering, should be your next rare find VW.
I know where there’s one with 26,000 original miles original owner
Muy bonito vochito
Sería increíble tener uno de esos
Saludos amigo y Felicidades
I had a ‘74 sun bug , had those same wheels. I never liked how the ‘74 and up bumper shocks looked so when the engine blew away the sun bug went. I’m digging this Sports Bug tho, last decent year of bumpers 😊
You guys have infected me! I'm thinking about finding an old bug. I've never had one but my wife is the oldest of 7 kids and that's what she grew up in. Her Dad would only buy VW's, they had several beetles and a couple of vans, she said it was like the circus clown car when they all got out of the car.
Hey I got this same car that im restoring and I was wondering if you knew how to store factory jack like the black one you have in the trunk. I know the clip is under the back sear but it wont stay up. Thank you
i have 2 1973 yellow sports bugs they are great like to see more on this one it will make a nice car
Oh wow ! I really do dig the sports Bugs
I'm seeing a "Dynamic Duo" developing! Dubwerks may need to clean his points to improve his spark. Jason is torturing poor Jen, but he is very charming about it!
Just finished my '71 Super beetle,Clementine Orange,1600 twin port after 4 years and $$$$$$$$$$.Im turning 60 next year and someone said " youre too old to be driving that!...well you know what I told them to do😉😂
Bring the yz 250 out?
Had a 74 super beetle, drove the piss out of it, could change engines in no time
👍👍
I wanted one of these when they were new. My mother would not allow me to own a VW
There were 2 versions of the Sport Bug in 1972 (Yellow and Silver)- The originals were 500 of each color and it was so popular they made it a limited production model.
Never made silver …they made blue , probably 15,000 yellow and 500 blue
And it was 73 only
I have a serious question for you VW experts! I have a 72 Super beetle and the seats wobble and shake excessively! They feel line they’re going to fall off the tracks! There are plastic spacers on the rails do what’s the fix? Thanks!
Awesome as always. So does dubwerks owe you 2 kidneys by now? =) Nice work Jase, looking forward to your restoration.
Haha, well he did show up with a 5 gallon bucket of paint so we are painting the shop 👍👍
Hi - what is the hooky pry plastic tool that you use doing the oil screens please? Want to get one! Thanks 👍🏻
they are pry tools from harb frt , door panel tools I think they call them
@@5150mxVW thank you! We dont have H.F here in uk, but l will look for a trim tool. Thanks again 👍🏻
My mom had this same car she got for graduation in 72. She drove it till it died and my uncle sold it for $100 in 1983.
The front turn signals covers should be flat black also.
All of them were ? I asked him , he said not all but I thought they all were black
@@5150mxVW Some were chrome and others black, came thru Volkswagen both ways ...
@Marc I am I said
Maybe vw ran out, of the black ones, and use the chrome ones, that were available everywhere.
@@vintage76vipergreenBeetle Volkswagen has inconsistencies in model production/features ... Either or = SPORT BUG is a GREAT LIMITED EDITION SUPER BEETLE MODEL ! Slainte ! Cheers !

Thank you RLP
The sport seats made the sports bug, i've owned 2 of them plus a 74 gold bug, i didn't see if it had the sport steering wheel plus it needs some black decals just below the rear window, nice condition.
He threw the sport bug seats out ! This car was sitting in a garage since 1997 . I remember it listed for sale , I didn’t inquire , it was around a year ago . It does have the sport rims and sport wheel . Lucky for dubwerks I have sport bug seats front and rear in the garage loft .
is there any difference in the engine in the sport bug compared to non sports bugs?
No , same high performance 1600 😉
I had a 71 Super Beetle (flat front window) and a 75 super beetle convertible. That one is in better shape than mine
Nice , it’s not terrible ...jury is out on the engine right now , all the valves were SUPER tight
👍
Real VW guys don't drive Super Beetles.
Haha, I haven’t heard that one . I personally cannot drive them , flat windshield or curved
1303s are like jlo ,curvy and they handle well. Idlove a GSM replica yellow black big type 4 in the back
Dudes start Shipping to Canada
Take a vaca Jim 😁
In Australia they were called the Superbug "L"
Thats in good shape. I wish you would tell us how much you get bugs for.
👍👍👍👍
👍
Pretty neat. Shame about the damned death foam...
Inventory update Jason! What’s shifting in the yard? 🏍️ 🚙
I just shot a quick Monday update vid at the shop for the 2nd channel - 5150mxvw2
shot it for you, it's up on the other channel, now back to shop for some painting
Does he do a lot of pushing cars around too? LOL
He sucks at it , but I’ve had a lot of practice
Now you just need a Sun Bug!
Haha, I think we are good on super special editions ...I know where a nice one is too
Fat chicks (super beetles) need love too
Did you adopt this kid yet?
Haha ! I told him on the way there I’m writing him off on my taxes
@@5150mxVW Haha Gotta be something in the tax code for that.
Congratulations on your sport 63 . Funny keep up the great work on RUclips ! Big fan Alex from NJ .
Whats the deal with tat board on top of the red bug?
It was in the red 71 westy ...California Custom
The 3rd bad news is I need double for the seats that you paid for the car with a title. 1973 sports bug 20,000 were produced in 1973
I have a full set in the loft in my garage , kid has it too easy lol
I used to have one, only one previous owner.
Missing the stereo radio and wheels, but with the interior and trim were intact.
Sold it to some shark because I was a naive college student, here in Covina.
If you're out there, guy- get fucked.
old yeller
P.S.,,,,,,........ Mine was a 73' too.......,,this one is epic...
Nice ! Thank you Pat
Yellow is my favorite color of a car too can i have 1 beetle too please i really love beetle but cant afford it wish you could hear me 🥺
,,,,I thought you were going to tell us,,,,,,,we have to push this one too!!!!!.......😯😯😐😐notsorry.........tnx,pat
Haha , it was close , it was running terrible before it went on the lift
Great video I have the same one looking for back drums and a gas tank if if anybody knows of any for sale would much be appreciated thanks
I thought super beetle flat windshield was in1971 only?
hi, no 71 and 72
@@5150mxVW wow. guy at work has a 1971 and told me that flat is 71 only. Thanks
You need to start doing some restorations. All we see you do is just picking up cars. We never see what happens to them and it’s very frustrating
If I could text you a pic of me doing this corner on the single cab I would . Metal work and fab work takes time ...recoding it takes 4x the then add 6 - 8 hours for the edit / upload .
what for sale //? and I never had ..ok something to think about ,//putting gas in my 2000 Lincoln Continental is up- setting me //wish I had my 1970 blue Beetle //and pull the motor 2 times because of heads creaking //as I drive 80 M/P/H /and replace the oil color //14 inch Chevy wheels on the back it go anywhere snow or mud
Super beetle Sportseatless Nooooo!
Yep, that just happened
Can you please sit Dubwerks down with period Treuhaft, Claude's Buggies and Kamei etc catalogues. While that car is more interesting than a stock super, it desperately needs some more go and some more bling, 70"s style.
he's going 100 % stock resto on it
But some of the Kamei stuff was dealer installed... 👀
I wouldn’t have passed on it if I knew you had seats. I love paying obscene amounts of money.
Haha, no you don’t !
Tidy wheels
👍
