Hello Brian, My name is Mario Roriz and am building an earthship in Portugal. I want to ask, how can I get a machine equal to the machine that appears in the video to compact the soil in the tires. If necessary I will go to new zealand. Thanks and see you soon
We've finished 99.5% of it and we've been living in our earthship for 4 years now. I need to get around to putting up some new video clips. We had no hassles getting building consent from our local council.
We haven't screwed our tyres together, I don't know if other earthship boulders do. And the tyre press saved heaps of time and sweat, take my word for that. Note it is designed for 15"and16" tyres.
hope you furnish us with and update of your finished product. Interestingly enough I watched the documentary about Michael Reynolds who started this concept. I believe it took him about 13 to 14 years fighting the local and state authorities to be able to build these earthship homes. It is called the garbage warrior. Any way nice to know that other countries are willing to try new things; for the better of the earth and human kind.
This is so inspiring. There is so much potential in New Zealand for this kind of living and I would really love to find a community in New Zealand where everyone can learn to make earthships and help each other. I want one :D
Seing you and your family working together in this project is very inspiring, There is an earthship here in Japan where I currently reside, but my wife and i are planing to build one in Peru, I sincerely believe this is in great part the solution to humanity`s problems thank you for sharing your video, congratulations for your new home, all you need now is a car that runs on water.
@jedics1 It may seem to be better to press tyres in place, However it would have been more difficult, 1,Because it would be very awkward using our press on the wall. 2, Rolling the tyres up planks easier and quicker than lifting buckets of clay. 3, We have galv rebar going up through the center of every third tyre so it would have made pressing these impossible. And finally the tyres weighed in at 220kgs after they were full, they aren't full when we put them in place on the wall.
@jacobnavy Hi, I'm not sure what you want me to tell you. It's very straight forward, The steel band is made the same size as the external size of the tyre size you decide to use and the ram needs to be able to fit inside the tyre. The plates at the end of the ram want to be as wide as the stretched open sidewalls of the tyre. If I was to build another one I'd use a ram with a telescoping spear. Hope this helps.
Due to the number of emails I've had regarding the tyre press in the past 2 weeks I make these comments. It is custom made for 15" & 16" tyres. The steel band is 25mm plate steel. If you want to make one for yourself do so by all means, it's not copyrighted. If I was to make another one I'd use a ram with a 2 stage spear, and I'd make the plates at each end of the ram almost as wide as the tyre can be stretched open. Remember that the ram needs to be double action ie. goes both ways, in and out.
LOL. My crew were my kids as you see in the video clip, their ages were 14yrs to 18yrs old. Our earthship was a family project build after work and school, and on weekends. This project was a lot more than building an earthship, it built men out of boys. Now my kids debate who's going to have it when I die, lol.
your drain is upside down. Unless you have holes drilled on the bottom this may cause water issues because the water will have to raise the height of the pipe before draining.
@jedics1 @jedics1 Yes it is a building code requirement due to the possibility of earthquakes here in NZ. If you look at gubbsearthship.co m/tyre-wall/ you can see more detail. Rebar is embedded in the footing and into the bond beam to tie it all together
@Bubayaga It's pretty much finished, just a few finishing things to do. We had no problems getting building consent here in Ngaruawahia. Go to Facebook "New Zealand Earthship" and you will see our progress in photo album "Gubb Earthship Progress"
@benaberry Actually there is a good reason we wore bare feet, that is we could walk on the sidewalls of the tyres and feel any soft spots. No problems with our backs.
aw awesome mate, man i wished they had large communities of earthships, because it seems everyone that has one has to be far away from the city... === how much did your piece of land cost?... because here in west auckland waitakere land, and not as much yours, goes for like 200k?...dang, i so desperately want to live free from the slave contract that is a mortgage on a house, i just want to be free from the bank ..
Very enjoyable and inspiring to watch. And here's an expat kiwi wondering what was going on over there and I see your earth shattering ingenuity is leading the sustainable / recyclable world. Yes, please post an update. I haven't had a look at your site yet but a follow up video would be awesome to see how it's going. Sadly my wife does not share my dream so I think I'll start by just making a man cave out the back.
I'm LOVING that compressor. I'm always seeing clips of the 'hammer' action.....which equals ZERO fun. Although it's a great way to keep fit I guess lol. My husband and I heard of earthships about 8 years ago when we had our first baby. We are definately looking at doing the earthship thing once we have HEAPS more time to do it....and our children (3 extra kids later) are a bit older. Hopefully by then, a bit more technology has been added to the 'compression' equipment lol.
now Ive seen the photos I realize how much of a compromise u have had to make to get past building codes like many others. Thats a lot of steel and concrete for a structure already proven to be very earthquake resistant. Pushes the cost towards the unattainable for a lot of ppl too. We need to find a way to convince councils of a tyres integrity as theyre negating the main reasons for using them, eg. load bearing, cheap, green and can be built by anybody.
@Gubby1958 Hi Gubby family. I was wondering if you have made for someone ever more comprehensive comment about the custom made ram. Which you could copy paste for a some fee on my email. I am pretty confident on the side of a hydraulic unit but would greatly appreciate any experience regarding the behaviour of 15` tire and sizes of the custom made ram. Btw your earth-ship you tube video has the best energy of all the amazing earth-ship videos out there. Than you. Jacob
Congrats! Kuddos to you and your family for getting permits and doing it! I want to do something similar but I cannot find enough information on it. I've studied a lot of alternative building methods, as well as water systems, but I can't find anything that puts it all together in a whole-house system. Any recommendations? Thanks for the vid. Very informative and fun!
if you look at other Earthship construction videos on you tube you'll find that they screw the half tires on after the earth has been rammed in the tyre but before the half tyre has been filled, and as for the hydraulic ram it may not save much time but it saves the energy of of your work force , nothing worse than you unpaid work force quitting half way through the project.
Are you finished yet? Did you continue through winter or stop for winter and continue in summer. Its all very interesting. I am thinking about this method of building as well, I am in auckland and dont know how the permit thing will go. Great video. Time for an update???
holy brian maattee.. your the man... whats your profession? are you like a licensed builder or something?... what kind of training do you need to build this homes for the future?... i heard there is a school that teaches it in america..for 2000$ tution..
I really like the impact this project will have on your kids - imagine that they will 'get it' pretty well their parents are ground breaking people and because they helped to create it - that makes them amazing individuals as well. Well done.
not having to bucket up the dirt does make a lot of sense, I might have to reevaluate my ideas :) Is the cement foundation and rebar going up the center of the tires something u had to do to get past building codes? Also is the rebar joined to the foundation?
the tyre pounding has got to be the biggest negative there is about earthships so its good to see some solutions to making it easier, though I did think it a bit strange u werent doing the whole thing on the wall so u dont have to move 200kg after :)
Thank you for sharing your build process. It is very exciting and I hope you record additional videos showing your progress until completion and beyond! Great job on the hydraulic press and perhaps you'll rent your "crew" out in the future!
hello brian my name is danny and i would love to come visit ur home and pick ur brain a long term goal of mine is to build one of these homes , i need some local mentors , and some sound advice .
Hi brian, just wanted to ask how long it took you to get your permits to build your dream home? also how much it all cost? the permits that is thanks when your free.
thanks for your efforts Gubby, U r helping to pave the way for others in the future. hopefully that paving will be done with earth rather than cement :)
Hello @BrianGubb, How long and how much money did it take for you to build this earthship? It looks amazing! I have always wanted a big home and I would want to do something like this. All the other earthships I have seen are very small compared to this. May I know the squarefootage of this home too? How did you achieve the two floors?!
We just found a ram in scrap metal yard and got a local engineer to make it for us. It's not something you can buy off the shelf.

No I'm not a builder, I just figured that I was dumb enough lol to build an earthship. You can learn all you need to know online.
please make a update! and please explane everything in detail :-) i like your project really! thanks!

Hey Brian, nice video!
Any pics, videos or even website available of the finished earthship??
Hello all I was wondering where could I purchase one of those tire presses, and for how much?
Thank you for your time in advance.
brilliant! I like that you use the hydraulic press to pack out the tires, not a technique I've seen before. Best of luck!
I am going to use this video as part of our school inquiry on Eco buildings. Thanks for posting your efforts!
haha cool man, dang i thought the council was evil... and were gonna screw you over...tjis is awesome
Recommending your video to friends in our community. Such foresight. A great leadership exercise.
hey man you going down to christchurch for mike reynolds seminars?... this up coming week?.
This is amazing you guys!!! Would love to see a video of the finished product!!! Great work!
suggest steel cap boots! nice feet. Looks awesome, love to do this! How are your backs?
Just do a search on Earthships, there is tons of info out there.
Just get an engineering firm to make you one, that is what we did
Friedensreich Hundertwasser had simm\ilar ideas in Opua on his 70 acre farm.
how did you go with consent etc? did you finish building it?
Just as easy to get one made by your local engineering firm
Best intentions to uz, honestly, peace n luv whanau
check out 'gubbsearthship. com' all the answers are there
yea man just type gubbs earthship in google you will see the site
Hi have you finished?, hope you pulled it off
