      Eileen D What are Christian saints according to the Bible?
      The word “saint” comes from the Greek word hagios, which means “consecrated to God, holy, sacred, pious." It is almost always used in the plural, “saints.” "…Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he did to Your saints at Jerusalem" (Acts 9:13). "Now as Peter was traveling through all those regions, he came down also to the saints who lived at Lydda" (Acts 9:32). "And this is just what I did in Jerusalem; not only did I lock up many of the saints in prisons …“ (Acts 26:10). There is only one instance of the singular use, and that is "Greet every saint in Christ Jesus…" (Philippians 4:21). In Scripture there are 67 uses of the plural “saints” compared to only one use of the singular word “saint.” Even in that one instance, a plurality of saints is in view: “…every saint…” (Philippians 4:21).
      The idea of the word “saints” is a group of people set apart for the Lord and His kingdom. There are three references referring to godly character of saints: "that you receive her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints …" (Romans 16:2). "For the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ" (Ephesians 4:12). "But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints" (Ephesians 5:3).
      Therefore, scripturally speaking, the “saints” are the body of Christ, Christians, the church. All Christians are considered saints. All Christian are saints-and at the same time are called to be saints. First Corinthians 1:2 states it clearly: “To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy…” The words “sanctified” and “holy” come from the same Greek root as the word that is commonly translated “saints.” Christians are saints by virtue of their connection with Jesus Christ. Christians are called to be saints, to increasingly allow their daily life to more closely match their position in Christ. This is the biblical description and calling of the saints.
      How does the Roman Catholic understanding of “saints” compare with the biblical teaching? Not very well. In Roman Catholic theology, the saints are in heaven. In the Bible, the saints are on earth. In Roman Catholic teaching, a person does not become a saint unless he/she is “beatified” or “canonized” by the Pope or prominent bishop. In the Bible, everyone who has received Jesus Christ by faith is a saint. In Roman Catholic practice, the saints are revered, prayed to, and in some instances, worshipped. In the Bible, saints are called to revere, worship, and pray to God alone.

      @@narrowisthewaytoeternity Saints are not to be worshipped--the Church is very straight forward about this. They are to be revered only as another example of how to say 'Yes" to Jesus. The more examples, the better! We talk to the saints and ask them to pray for us or for our intentions, just as we ask our friends and families to pray for us or our intentions: we are all one church. And the Church's rules on NAMED sainthood are strict. We acknowledge our inability to know God's will and His full mysteries. We also acknowledge (as did Jesus) our human need to see, study, and understand other human witnesses--our fellow brothers and sisters who have been able to follow Christ's example closely. However, the Church doesn't want to erroneously elevate a person's life as an example to follow--so the restrictions are tight. The Church isn't saying that my grandma isn't a saint, just that the they know not to presume God's will.

      @@narrowisthewaytoeternity amen. We are to be set apart from the world, and live for God that's what a saint is according to the bible, we can say we are Christians all we want but if were stealing, lieng, cheating, getting drunk, fornicating, gambling, gossiping, hating others in our daily lives then we are not separated from the world set apart for God. We are not to be even named among those sins. Ephesians 5:3. So in the end, the question doesn't come to are you a saint? The question is how long can you be a saint? Because the moment you do any of those unclean things you are no longer separated for God. So how long can we stay separated for God because as long as you stay separated for God you are a saint. We all fail we are sinners but if we confess our sins to him God, he is just and faithful to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness, but it has to be a genuine repentance according to his word. I was educated by old-school nuns, and grew up with the stories of saints and martyrs. I used to worry and fret that I was not like the great and well-known saints, and I believed that I could never be like them. I was riding on a city bus in Austin one day, about forty years ago, worrying that I was nothing like Mother Teresa. All of a sudden, God flicked me on the back of my head - at least, that was very much what the experience was like - and simply said "She's not you either." And in that very brief moment, I learned a lot about our individual relationships with our Creator, and about the path to sainthood. I still believe I am far from getting it right, but I also have hope. God bless and keep you, Father Mike, and everyone else who comes here.

    • @geegee6630
      @geegee6630 3 года назад

      @@servandosegoviano2051 I think it is because we are sometimes afraid to face the truth about ourselves. And we may be afraid to face what we SHOULD be doing - how we should be living our lives. We just can't face what it would take to make the necessary changes that God asks us to make. It's easier to close one eye and think "I'm a good person.' But we know that's not enough. We just don't want to do what it takes. As Fr. Mike sums it up in this video, 'Why aren't each one of us saints? Because we don't really want to be.' We don't like to admit that and watching Fr. Mike's videos forces us to think about tough things. Easier to ignore because we are afraid to watch.

    Firstly, yesterday while I was silently sitting in some confusing spiritual heartache during our staff meeting, the organisation's chaplain addressed us all saying "You have to make friends with your pain - it's a sign to either stop, or push on through".
    Now today, this video addresses learning to love the process! (It is very hard to do that when you can't imagine being on the other side of it, but it's an encouraging reinforcement all the same!)
    I also love the point about how saints have the courage to say yes to God's grace - I forget that this is something we have to say yes to! I usually think of saying yes to God as being entirely works-based, and usually in an apprehensive light of what it might cost... but that is not all we say yes to! :)

      Now let me tell you one of my favourite quotes, it is from the Bible - 'This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.'
      What you said is true. Every person has a past, but God requires what is past. We must give account to God for the deeds done in the body. But the good news is that every sinner CAN HAVE a good future because Christ has died for us. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. Let me commend my Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, to You.

      @smeatonlighthouse4384 5 лет назад

      Rainy XI - Christ Jesus has already WON that battle for us on the cross. When He shouted FINISHED and delivered up His Spirit in the Father's hands, He had purchased our redemption through the shedding of His precious blood.
      God now offers you eternal Life in Christ Jesus. When you believe for the forgiveness of sins, the Holy Spirit of God enters and indwells you. You are made a partaker of the divine nature. That 'HOLY' Spirit makes you a Saint of God automatically. You are made the righteousness of God in Christ. It is God's righteousness you will possess in Christ, not some 'jumped up' man made figment of his imagination from Popery.

    I'm so glad you quoted a part of Song of Songs 2:16 - My beloved is mine and I am his; he pastures his flock among the lillies +
    The Word of God contained herein gives me so much joy and comfort, and now I realise that it's also a consolation from God to me, and to everyone who opens ears to him, wherein the Lord is telling us that we are his and that He is our's and that He has called us to set us apart from worldly things. Made for much more than this world. So beautiful. So real. So so lovely.

    What I got out of this: Choosing Jesus above our own ambitions will always be the defining problem of every generation. Because we cannot see the "prize" as valuable enough to forego the immediate earthly pleasures, we are locked into this struggle. But by struggling, choosing Jesus daily, we show our hearts are aligned with God's own heart. When our hearts are no longer bound by the things of this world, but instead bound by God's desires, we can truly be saints.

    Loved it, terrific video Fr and oh so true! May I add that it may seem to cost us everything but when we enter into God's will fully, there's a total peace and satisfaction that depletes any sense of loss in fact with an eternal sense of gain.. St Paul says I count everything as "garbage" for the sake of Christ. The reality is we are getting a whole lot more than what we give up. We give up poverty, spiritual death and our dark nature and we gain the life and infinite riches of Christ which are unparalleled in this world and the next .. Literally out of this world

    Ok this just needs to be said: Fr Mike, your bright soul and loving heart burning for Christ are as beautiful as your darn handsome face. 👆🏻✝️⛪😊 God is using these gifts he has given you, spiritually and physically, to proclaim his Word. This full-hearted, beautiful, faithful example you set for young people especially, your devotion to vitally alive, chaste purity in body and a worshipful, warm, loving heart and soul, is SO NEEDED IN OUR TIME. You set an example of loving, chaste, attractive, deeply human, compassionate, vitally alive submission to the glorious Trinity. Praise be to the Lord Jesus Christ for every gift he has given you, in your prayerful words and in your body, to teach the faith in love, joy and obedience to His will for His glory.
