If you have 0 subscribers, create videos like you have a million. If you have a million, create like you have 0. This is such wonderful advice. Thanks, Matt!
This video hits home. I never had a viral video but the joy comes from making videos that I find fun and interesting that helps to solve data science problems. This journey called RUclips is a marathon, it’s okay to slow down, some days are super productive which may make up for the unproductive days. Some days is like a sprint while some days are like recovery/procrastinating days. And yes, “I should be making a video”. Great video Matt!
You are far from a loser Matt. I’ve watched your videos for a couple of years now....I’m 60, partly retired. What attracts me..your authentic way of presenting how you discipline yourself and how you keep life simple. Your videos have shown me how to discipline myself in a time of change (working to retirement). So thank you (and Natalie) for being open, honest and for showing us all we can overcome and move forward in whatever we want.
This is so relatable. Especially the doubts and fear. I think most people don't understand how challenging it is to be a RUclipsr! But being able to create things as a job is so so special!!
This video definitely made me look at being a RUclipsr differently. I’ve been making videos on RUclips off and on for about 5 years now. I just made my return back to RUclips 5 days ago, now I feel like I’m back in my happy place. I can definitely relate to starting off making easy content at the beginning but soon realized that I wanted to do more. This explains why me and RUclips have this on and off relationship. Honestly I’m here to stay now because I realized I love making videos and not just reaction videos. I’m an over thinker so I expect more from myself; this crippled me because I started to believe that reaction were the only content I’ll ever be able to create. Maybe I fear stepping out the box and showing a side of me people never seen before and maybe I feel like I’m not interesting enough because I’m 24 still living with my parents and really don’t get out much. I’m hungry enough to get to the next level with this but I never knew how. I also believed if I had more friends as RUclipsrs I’ll be more on point and focused about it. I now see that if I apply myself In a different form, fashion, show who I really am and put the time into my content I’ll enjoy it more despite the views. I really appreciate you for this video and I will definitely be taking note from other RUclipsrs to help elevate myself as a person and a creator.
One of my favorite vlogger. I could say #1. There are alot of things I can relate to him. Now Im also a vlogger. Following my passion. I listen to his vlog like almost everyday. After I woke up in the morning. As of today. I already have 450 subscribers / 75,000 views for almost 4 months. Looking forward to reach 1,000 subscribers and 4000 watch hours
I have utmost respect for creators of all types. I can't imagine the pressure of creating interesting engaging content repeatedly and staying current and fresh. Mad respect and I appreciate the fruit of your labor!
I agree with everything you said specially the failure aspect of doing RUclips as a full-time job. It hasn't been easy but like you said you gotta pull through those hard days and just try your best to make it work. Thank you for this video
This is the best description I’ve listened to of what it’s like to do RUclips full time. I’m only early days but everything you said is truth. Self doubt and patience for me is a battle. Loved this, new sub and can’t wait to watch more.
My first career was in the music and entertainment industry, because I thought that working for clubs and festivals was the same as the feeling of going to those festivals. And the realization that that wasn't the truth was a hard lesson to learn. But I also think you have to go through it yourself to actually understand it. I'm clearly not a professional youtuber, but this was still really relatable
All great things are challenging in ways both obvious and hidden. Bringing your challenges to light with this video will serve to help many of us who are trying to build our own channels, so thank you for your willingness to be transparent about the process's barriers to success and the pitfalls along the way. Your mental health and wellness content is often my favorite content, Matt.
Watching established channels, everything looks like it comes so easily, but there's always a lot of hard work that goes on in the background. Thanks for keeping it real!
I love this! I think everyone’s goal should be able to find what makes you most happy and find a way to do it full time. I started my channel 2 years ago not having a clue how to make videos but I quickly found out that making videos and being creative is what makes me happy. The goal to create full time is still on going but I keep turning up because I love the process of making things and learning everyday. Thanks Matt!
I hear you. So hard to push through when you see absolutely no results for months and months. I needed to hear this from someone as successful as you. The part about you in front of your computer saying this is when you are the happiest. Made me laugh so much and I can definitely relate. This is what kept me going...enjoying the process so much! Thank you for sharing your experience!
I have never wanted to be a youtuber, but I think this is great information for those out there that do! A lot of the gen Z want to be influencers and such, but I don't know that they realize there is a LOT of behind the scenes work and dedication needed. It isn't just a party!!
This is so relatable and 100% agree about RUclips forcing you to face your fears- its pushed me outside of my comfort zone in so many ways and I feel more like "me" since starting because of the things I've had to overcome. I loved this video
I really needed to watch this! ❤️ I’m just on my way to 4K subscribers on my photography channel but because it started to pick some traction now, I feel like I have to push myself more. It can be so easily overwhelming when we think we have to be posting constantly. Great video as always! THANK U!
This is really hard-hitting and important advice to give and hear. I appreciate you Matt, because you're genuinely invested is helping us be better RUclipsrs, like Harris Heller is invested in helping people become better streamers and creators.
I really enjoy making sewing contents on youtube, everytime i post a video i feel so fulfilled and happy. I can relate to what you're saying Matt, Being a youtuber isn't an easy journey, sometimes i feel like want to give up because there are lots of thing to do while i still work on another job which is my clothing business. But what driven me to keep doing it is my vision and purpose. Hopefully someday I can get to the stage where you are now, who can make a living from youtube 😊
Honestly one of my favourite videos of yours. Love how honest you were about this and as a content creator myself this helped me stay sane about the “mundane” part of being a ytber. Feeling so inspired again by you as always!!
i dont know why ur videos r so calming .... iam really going through this particular phase u talked about ... the fear that ppl will stop watching my videos and my channel will crash n burn .... thankx a ton for this video matt
"They think the feeling of watching a RUclips video, is the same feeling as making a youtube video" - That's soooo true. Even now 100 videos in, when I'm making videos I find myself expecting this surge of "sensation" to come over me that is similar to how I feel watching a complete video and it of course doesn't happen. Making the video is dull, and then I turn it (hopefully) into something that generates a sensation into others (and myself watching the completed product). Spot on Matt!
I definitely had that feeling of ‘why am I putting these hours of work for a video that only will get 10 views’. I snapped out of it by realising the power of eternity! Remembering that whatever I put out there will be up FOREVER.
This was really encouraging and helpful! I am just starting out, and I'm not very good. I haven't made a lot of videos yet, but I am starting to put more time into them and I do think that I am slowly improving. Great advice and perspective. Thanks Matt!
Just started creating videos myself and can completely relate to the scene of being at peace and finding joy in editing! It may not be the constant travel and glamour that it appears to be, but making videos is so fulfilling 😌 Loved the video as always, Matt!
When you first start creating videos, it can feel like you are doing a lot of things wrong. That’s why this was awesome to watch and relatable in everywhere. Tons of value!
That conversation you talked about made me laugh so hard hahah... at the same time that would totally be me lol. Btw. the timing of this video is amazing. My video from last week has kinda blown up in comparison to my usual stuff and I'm feeling sooo pressured by all the new subscribers, so thanks for calming me :)
thanks matt. love ur course so much. time is sooo elusive with a full time job tat is crazy and a new baby. i have to push through on this dream. everytime i pick up a camera and shoot, it felt reallly good.
So many of us can relate to that feeling of starting out and not getting any traction. What's helped me the most is just enjoying the process. Content creation can be fun! It doesn't always have to be about the views, which is something I'm constantly reminding myself of.
It’s like starting a business you’ll fail a couple of times and keep failing until you reach a point where you’ve failed so much that you are improving and starting to master your craft .
I absolutely love this because its so true. More than half of the video is the edit and it takes so much time on the computer. I have also been asking myself as a soon to graduate highschooler and wonder if i can continue to make videos in the future. This has been infinitely helpful! Love you man! #mattiandpeteshow needs to see this. Answers the question of the last episode so so well.
The slow-motion laugh-- so good. I'm trying to improve every video, that's it. Thank you for reminding me that the way to beat the algorithm is to just make better and better content.
He isnt lying about no one watching.. Made my 6th video and spent over 30 hours working on it. I have 25 subscribers and no one watched. Doesn't Matter. Each video gets me closer to making something better. 1 or 2% better. Once the audience comes, I'll come something that is worthy of their time. Who is with me?
When I first started my RUclips account, I sought advice from creators who specialize in growing your channel. This is different than your course as you have a large channel that was grown from original content 😔 They always talked about the algorithm and numbers and would show off their numbers in order to get you to seek their advice more and continue watching. As a creative, it crushed my want to keep on uploading. Because that is not why I create. I create because it feels good to share something healing and beautiful with the world. 👏🌸 It's when I STOPPED CARING about numbers that my channel started growing. If you feel really stressed out about your numbers, upload schedule etc, REMEMBER why you started. Remember that you are a human being that has needs as a creative. 💞🙏
yeah but the grind though! I missed an upload day for the first time this week because I'm completely drained and I feel so guilty for taking time to rest omg
@@TheDhammaHub Believe me I've tried but unfortunately there's only so much editing I can do in a week and I always end up only being able to edit 1 video a week even if I've filmed more... but I'm trying!
there's a lot of fear that comes with starting a youtube channel, but i've gained so much good things from that fear. I'm wayyy more confident in myself than i was two years ago, it's helped me grow into who i want to become, learn so many new skills that go into filmmaking, and also just general life skills like time management and public speaking. doing this on top of full time school is a LOT but i wouldn't change it for the world, even if i never make a cent from my videos, it's been so valuable to me. if you want to make videos and there's something holding you back, go for it! what's the worst thing that could happen?
Oooowwww my, the story of you starting a RUclips channel because you felt you had to is Exactly the same reason why I started my channel :) On my 30th birthday I quit my office job and started travelling, 6 years later I moved back in with my parents because of Covid. I woke up one chilly morning at the start of winter during a pandemic and had a look at the videos I shot with a GoPro 4 during all my travels and had the feeling I HAD to do something with them before it was to late.... So for the past 5 months I did not work but locked myself up, up in the attic of my parents house and started doing something I had never done before :D I started going through all the shaky footage with horrible audio shot with my GoPro 4 and tried to figure out how to edit a video and grow a RUclips channel!! Now 5 months later I have just gotten my 150th subscriber and know that everything will work out just fine and I have complete confidence that if I just keep editing and improving, my channel will be successful at some point in the future!!! Even though I am still very far from being monetized, I AM a fulltime RUclipsr and this is my job for the next years to come, HAPPY DAYS :)
*Average person* Expectation: Wow, I can make money just by uploading videos without having a job? Cool! Reality (after 10 months): I am finding a job, RUclips is amazing, but it's not what I thought. You have this effort and you would get almost NOTHING in return, except amazing fans. I'm getting burned out, I think of quitting. 2 months later: I am officially quiting RUclips! I'm done. *Last upload 7 years ago*
As a budding RUclipsr, as you said, of course my end goal is to make a full-time career out of making videos. But there is always a constant fear and doubt if it can ever be possible. It will be great if you could share how you dealt with that fear and anxiety in your early days, and how you overcame it.
"If you have 0 subscribers, you should create videos like you have a million...and if you have a million, you should create like you have 0." Ugh. Love this statement so much. So true. It's all about the mindset going into it honestly. Love this Matt!
"I started it because it was just something I couldn't not do." There's something so powerful about this statement. It perfectly captures the feeling that comes with finding your passion and needing to take action to pursue your dreams. Awesome video!
I can relate to that i started multiple RUclips channels over the years but never did a long term with any of them . So now I have a channel because it was just something I couldn’t do and I wanted to communicate with others my passion and share it with loads of people .
I had a similar experience when I had someone walk up to me and say "Hey, I love your videos"... I think most people don't realize that most RUclipsrs are Introverts and we are awkward haha.
it's weirddd, people in my school have started to find my channel and the other day my brother's friend messaged me saying she loved my videos, i'll never get over the fact that real people watch my content ahah
I didn’t realise this. I’m wanting to make videos to get out of my comfort zone and pursue a creative life. I’m an introvert and thought RUclips was for more extroverted people. Makes me feel I can actually do this.
Same and I am NOT even a BIG RUclipsr I am very teeny tiny youtube ... like very!!’ And I was so blown away when someone said hey I know you from your videos 😭😭😭😭😭 it was so sweet
As a small youtuber with 1k subs doing videos with friends its really fun but you feel lost not knowing what to do next. Good luck to any creator out there and thank you for the awesome videos. Thank you Matt. Keep doing what you want.

Hey Matt, your smile in the beginning (0:50 and so on) is so sad / or tired ? Take care, rest more! Happiness and joy are the most powerful and meaningful things in life!!!
If you want to learn the truth about being a RUclipsr, be one. Videos like this one never really show all the truth, the process that goes behind the scenes. If trully want to be a RUclipsr, start now!
Just joined Master RUclips about an hour ago 🙌 Have been checking out the amazing community in the past hour, watching other people's channels. Will now start watching the course... after this video. Hi from a fellow Sydney based creator 🇦🇺
If you have 0 subscribers, create videos like you have a million. If you have a million, create like you have 0. This is such wonderful advice. Thanks, Matt!
🙌🏻🤗☀️
My favorite piece of advice too. It feels like a kick in the butt.
Exactly!

I really love having a full-time job and just doing youtube for fun =) That way I can do what I want and don't have to cater towards expectations
yeah but the grind though! I missed an upload day for the first time this week because I'm completely drained and I feel so guilty for taking time to rest omg
@@JessicaVianaa The trick is filming a bit in advance if that is possible ;D
@@TheDhammaHub Believe me I've tried but unfortunately there's only so much editing I can do in a week and I always end up only being able to edit 1 video a week even if I've filmed more... but I'm trying!
there's a lot of fear that comes with starting a youtube channel, but i've gained so much good things from that fear. I'm wayyy more confident in myself than i was two years ago, it's helped me grow into who i want to become, learn so many new skills that go into filmmaking, and also just general life skills like time management and public speaking. doing this on top of full time school is a LOT but i wouldn't change it for the world, even if i never make a cent from my videos, it's been so valuable to me.
if you want to make videos and there's something holding you back, go for it! what's the worst thing that could happen?
thank you..my perfectionist self stopped me but i am doing it anyway
I love how you're always able to articulate exactly what I'm feeling, always so relatable 😭
Makes me feel like everything is going to be okay :')
*Average person*
Expectation: Wow, I can make money just by uploading videos without having a job?
You are an angel this morning! I can't tell you how much I needed this. God bless!
As a budding RUclipsr, as you said, of course my end goal is to make a full-time career out of making videos. But there is always a constant fear and doubt if it can ever be possible.
It will be great if you could share how you dealt with that fear and anxiety in your early days, and how you overcame it.
I love when someone decides to share their experience and knowledge which we all can use in our own areas.
Thanks!
Each and Every second of this video is so freaking relatable 🤧
Matt's Content give me so much positivity and confidence! Thanks Matt for being the best❤️🙏
"If you have 0 subscribers, you should create videos like you have a million...and if you have a million, you should create like you have 0."
Ugh. Love this statement so much. So true. It's all about the mindset going into it honestly. Love this Matt!
Gaza under attack
I think the most time-consuming part is the editing, sadly it a long process to success. I glad you did not quit Matt, your videos are immaculate
“I should be making a video right now.” I felt that in my soul 🤣
Hahaha everyday! x
Yo SO the bimmer guy👌👊
Omg I relate so much to the “I should be making a video right now” phrase😂
If we ever meet in person, I really hope to remember to say "Hey how's it going?" at the end of our chat :D
🙌🏻🙏🏻🤗
I didn’t realise this. I’m wanting to make videos to get out of my comfort zone and pursue a creative life. I’m an introvert and thought RUclips was for more extroverted people. Makes me feel I can actually do this.
Sorry I ruin your 69 like to 70
Same and I am NOT even a BIG RUclipsr I am very teeny tiny youtube ... like very!!’ And I was so blown away when someone said hey I know you from your videos 😭😭😭😭😭 it was so sweet
I said I would never make RUclips videos and that I was just obsessed with watching them, but here I am making videos and obsessed with watching them.
5:27 is the key.
Thanks for the motivation to get back at it Matt!💪
First 30 seconds hits the nail on the head.... “I reallllly should be making a video right now”
👌🏻

Wow i just started taking my RUclips channel more seriously this month and this came in just in time.
Totally agree. I'm trying to start up my channel and it's hard .But trying to keep my discipline ! wish me luck!
Watches Matt for multiple years.
"Hey Matt how's it going?"
As a RUclipsr with a small following, this helped a LOT!! You actually nailed it. Thank you so much for making this video!
Just joined Master RUclips about an hour ago 🙌 Have been checking out the amazing community in the past hour, watching other people's channels. Will now start watching the course... after this video. Hi from a fellow Sydney based creator 🇦🇺
I just genuinely enjoy your sense of humor. You are the best!
