This song is pure North Magic and Folk Lore... Whats even more mystic is that no one knows who composed the song, or how old it really is. The oldest documented writings of this song is from 1785 by komministern i Bollnäs Johan Gabriel Lindström. But the tale and the song it self is with all probability far older.
There is a metal band from Sweden called In Flames who did an instrumental version of this song on their first album way back in 1993(?), which is how I first heard it. That version has no lyrics but even the melody is very haunting - I learned to (poorly) play it on violin at one point so it kind of stuck with me. Learning the lyrics makes it very clear why they chose this song! It's incredibly dark - hearing music that makes you forget about God and the whole world - so metal! This is a very lovely recording as well, the artist should be proud.
@RenMakesMusic a fascinating folk song. It's about events of mass hysteria where people actually dances themselves to death. But, it's interesting to also see it as a metaphor of modern society.
This is SO cool! It reminds me of a film I played for at a film festival, "The Adventures of Prince Achmed".....it was 90 minutes of this stop motion photography made from real cutouts. Anyway, GREAT JOB.....what a cool project.
lel In the middle east part of Sweden, there is a village called Hårga. There were a group of young people who were like partying in a house and suddenly the devil walked in (dressed up as a human) and started playing his violin. The sound of the violin made them all start to dance, all the way up to the ridge in Hårga, which I've visited many times. The story say that they are still dancing on midnight and also he (the devil) had a goat's foot whick is, I think a sign of the devil. I hope this was to some help! I live about one hour away so I've been told this story many times
The origins of the story comes from a true(?) story. People were found mysteriously dead on Hårga ridge and this song is a product of the speculations of what might have happened.
This song originally is made because of the church and priests made the folkmusic in the region Hälsingland their enemy nr one (like they did hundreds of years later with rock music and jazz music) because the youngsters in that area rather played and danced then go to church, the area was called Hell by religious people in church, for many hundreds of years the expression "Go to Hä(e) lsingland" was used as instead of "go to hell" or our days "f_ck you". Hälsingland earned that reputation because of many reasons, before and under the viking era cultur (not a country) (old spelling of the name) Helsingland it was a cultur around the coasts and upstreams the rivers in Gulf of Bottnia before the the people who built Birka the famous viking village outside Stockholm went up the coasts and burned down the most succesfull villages with tradingcenters, in the mainland North Sweden where the Sami people all the way to Norwegian coast where the Norwegian coast and sea kings ruled. So it was a half helsinge and half sami cultur, it's also the first swedish regional law that was gender equal law in it's own way: if you find your partner having sex with someone else you had the right to kill them on the spot it was a right for both husband and wife. In late medivial time it was first assimilated and later annexed into Sweden, before that the swedish king sent a german apostle called Staffan (Steffan) to make Helsinglands pagans to Christians and he destroyed a pagan temple and he paid with his life and becomes a martyr the Sweds did a song we sing arround christmas. After the annexed Helsingland later becomed Christian the Swed King sent them on a crusade to christian Finland. Later on the King och moved people from east Finland Karelia to Helsingland and it's neighbour Dalarna those where still a pagan people and had a mix of shaman and something like a little voodo cultur, carved figures looking a little like indian totempoles but used as voodo dolls, talked a little with spirits through holes in the ice and used horn filled with a little bit of humus from a grave and also a little human bone from that grave, and closed the horn with a tail from a hare, another thing was a small hare doll of wood and textil used as a contract betwen the person carrying the and Lucifer so the person get a better life on earth and Lucifer his soul later on. A few years later, 200-300 years ago Stockholm town started to catch and move the homeless kids living on their streets and in winter time put them on sleds and move them to Helsingland, it could be as many as 300-400 each winter. At the same era i read some letters from local priests who complained that people here in Helsingland wasn't listening to moral sermon when priests preach, and people party a lot and where very promiscuous the party for a week and had sex everywhere. Priests begged to be moved to some other places. So this is a rebell song made with the glimse in the eye, it toke priests and the church condemnation and made a song that says we wont stop the music the party and our lifestyle untill we drops dead to earth. This is actually a song that celebrate life and resist the dull moral preach from a church that try to choke their cultur. Don't make it to something scary please this melody life afferming power also.

Jag har för mig att låten sträckers sig längre bak. Kanske tom till 1400 tal, men att nedteckningen är långt senare.
