Ricky Gervais in After - The Most Heartbreaking Moments From Season2

Although still mourning Lisa and struggling to turn over a new leaf, Tony shows compassion to his quirky little world.

I never realised how talented an actor Ricky was until this show, the range of emotions he can show and execute perfectly is brilliant
Watch Derek. He plays him. Quite funny but emotional too x
Caroline Judge I have watched Derek, great show as well. I feel like in this though he’s much more emotive
you should watch Derek, too!
MyEmpire91 See my comment above mate
@@AuzzieArtyst Watch Derek t.... Oh right
When his dad died honestly I completely lost it I couldn’t stop crying
Same! Until the next scene ticked over and the next thing I was laughing my arse off!
Not his dad, his father in law
@@lukebowler7946 no it's his dad

Same here. This is such a well written show.
I loved the first season but after losing my mom to covid last month, the second season just hits differently. I can relate to so many things and take/learn so much out of it. It just came out at the right time for me.
Tell your loved ones how much you love them, life can be harsh and unpredictable.
i’m so sorry for your loss💔

Jan 14 Is the official date. Trailer just came out
Surprised the ‘You’ve never looked so beautiful’ line at the end of Episode 2 didn’t make it in, that line hit me. The ending scene to Series 2 is absolutely heartbreaking. Ricky Gervais is a genius 🖤
I was just about to comment that. That was the one that properly finished me off. I think it was not being able to see him that made it even sadder. Just the pain in his voice. It was absolutely brilliant that series, best thing he's ever done
The exact words you were to say to a loved one in the same position😭
I cried so much at that scene. Personally thought it was the most heartbreaking one in the whole series
Seriously, that and the finale scene were the only two scenes I really cried at. Everything else, I was mostly coping. Really weird they didn’t include it considering so many people also agree with your comment lol.
Same...that scene had me in tears.
So did most of it
I think After Life is essentially how Ricky would feel without Jane. He constantly mocks her, but it's very very clear that he absolutely adores her. She's his rock and gives him the stability which enables him to express his very honest opinions.
Jane is so lucky to have him ❤
@@juliajackson3830 they're both lucky to have each other.
A great relationship should be built on plenty of ribbing your partner. I’ve been married 17 years now, together for 20 and we’re relentlessly giving each other shit. I think it’s healthy.
@@L1VE3V1L i would definitely like some Tips mate!
I think we see that in Lisa's grave. It says Lisa Jane Johnson, and it seems very intentional. If it wasn't though lmaooooo don't know what to think about that.
This show is an emotional rollercoaster, absolutely brilliant
@Gavin Gas There are other videos on RUclips you could watch. Maybe something like
_"How Not To Ruin Things for Others."_
@Gavin Gas Thanks. "Gavin" isn't. Bye.
lillelinne63: Like life itself.
I watched the first season with my fiancé. I lost him in February. Haven’t been able to watch the second part, but it seems like the most realistic portrayal of grief I’ve seen.
I'm so sorry. I lost my fiance in February as well, and nothing feels quite real any more, but this show is so realistic and raw. It makes me cry when everything else makes me numb.
I'm so so sorry, how are you doing? is it any better?
I’m so sorry . I dread losing my husband. I cry so much watching Afterlife and he’s still here ! Obviously the thought of losing him
Jen Wren, I agree with you. I too think this portrayal of grief after losing a partner is very true to life. My husband died just over 2 years ago and this is how it feels. I find this very, very hard to watch because all the emotions become overwhelming again. I’m so sorry that you lost your fiancé but the grief does get easier to live with.
I'm so sorry to hear that, and I understand what you've been through, I lost my Fiancée in 2013.
I 've only seen these YT clips of After Life, because I know I won't be able to handle the full episodes. Grief is fuckin' awful, but you do come to terms with it. The sad irony know is after meeting someone and learning to love again, I was diagnosed with a Grade 4 Glioblastoma in December 2020, and now it is my Partner that I have to see trying to deal with the very real possibility of losing the one She loves. And the shit thing is, when/if I do die, I can't be there for her, to hold her in my arms and tell her that despite the pain she feels, things will get better.
Wrote, directed and starred. Best thing I've watched for ages.
Have you not seen like the office?
@@cohenparsons947 But that's just silliness, no depth.
@@TheSeafordian it has infinitely more depth what you on about
The most heart braking scene of all was left out - where he's sitting on the bench with the nice lady at the cemetery and tells her he's just trying to feel normal again and fakes his way through it every day.
This is so true I look for that scene in all the replays like these x
Is that scene on here?
or the one where she says the assholes are growing in numbers
I liked the scene with the old woman who talked to cats.
2:41
do you know who's an underrated character: Cathy. So so many people relate to that feeling of being unloved and over looked- willing to try anything and look a fool just to be looked at. I feel she's so real in that respect and her relationship with Ricky's character is heartwarming in its own way.
***Spoiler Alert***
She was my favorite & definitely the most relatable character, she was funny, sweet & I was devastated she didn't find someone by the end I cared more for her character than I did Tony. Horrible to say but she was just lonely, but didn't take it out on anyone, she tried to make connections with people whereas Tony just alienated most
@@Stuart267 He alienated because he was Suicidal, but atlast he understood...... although i get what u r saying. But Yeah......felt bad for Kaith, someone's like Me.......
Is she the one Tony took to the cafe
@@christopherosullivan6473 Yup!
Her storyline broke my heart and I related so hard...
I wish I knew how Ricky Gervais came to know the grief of losing a spouse so intimately as to write a script, and act it, to perfection. Hits every note, spot on. Until I lost my husband I could have only guessed at the magnitude of the impact. I've always enjoyed his humor, wit, and acting skills, but I'm with After Life I'm just in awe.
❤️
I lost my husband this year and I agree, his writing is that of someone who has experienced this loss. I get his anger because I’m enraged often.
❤
I thought one of the saddest moments was when Lisa was watching TV bald and he tells her she's never looked so beautiful and cried
The one that mes de me break was the scene where she says say goodnight back or I can’t sleep that hit him and I cried
@@papayatv7766 even the scene where he goes out for a coffee with Kath was sad when he tells her the story when his wife calls him late just to say love you. Even felt sorry for Kath there, that’s the best part of the show you feel sorry for nearly every character.
He thought his dad wasnt never paying attention when his mom would read poems to him. But the fact his dad finished the poem, shows he loved it and something he will never forget
This is what p!sses me off about Gervais's shows he creates great characters makes you fall in love with them, but you only get 12 episodes with them
Any show over 12 episodes just gets a bit tired and empty
there has been a confirmed season 3
@@WintoFilm Oh my God! That is awesome news.

That's why he is a genius....leaves you wanting more.
I lost my fiancé in 1987 and the pain of that loss kept me single for 35 years.
I recently watched this show and felt like he was a man stabbing me straight in the heart, but it allowed me to come to terms with what I thought I had long buried.
I slowly began to feel like a different person…this show gave me something that I never got from so-called grief counselling.
Thank you.
Grief is not learned ,its experienced..You have to experience every part of it in order to be able to live in the world...
Sorry for your loss 😢 hope youve found the strength to carry on!
Steven, I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope you're happy now. Keep strong.
The scene where Ricky describes Lisa calling him up at work and him going "What's wrong?!" and she responds "Nothing, I just love you" sent me, such an incredible show.
You will either laugh, feel sad, or cry during every episode. Every one. This is one of the best written series I’ve seen in a long time. Ricky is a genius. You can’t help but like all these characters...even the perv. I’m glad there’s a season 3 to look forward to. There is no happy ending. No resolution. It’s just life as it goes on.
It was like this for me but I was laughing and crying at the same time idk why but some parts are happy but at the same time really sad
no, not every episode, thats like a cycle for every scene.. genuinely tears you up and then makes you end up laughing all in the same scene.
I’m in love with this show. I WANT SEASON 3
they are releasing onr .They have confirmed too
Ricky confirmed s3!
GTF Updates yesss I’m so excited!!
Eda I agree with you a thousand percent!! Love Ricky in this role.
Yes!!!! Season 3 🙏🙌🏼😁👏🤞 so many emotions and very close to home for me as i recently lost my nan to Cancer, so many wise words we can all take from these series
I'm a 42 year old man, would say man's man, I'm not scared of anything, I speak my mind and say it as it is, watched afterlife 1 and 2 back to back and what a roller coaster, the tears wouldn't stop rolling down my face, my cheeks were burning by the end and would even say its changed the way I see things, thanks Ricky a truly amazing show
Same here I cried like a baby. A totally brilliant show.
just watching tonight, am crying like a baby
@Gavin Gas free world so your welcome to have an opinion my friend!
Legend mate 👍
his voice cracks are the death of me :'(
"Oh, good. Because I love that girl. Apple of my eye. Couldn't stand anything to happen to her." Truly shows how much he loved her, but what hurts even more is he isn't able to understand that she's gone. Double the pain.
It might sound stupid but I’ve always been crazy about my girlfriend and after watching After Life I just started to appreciate her on a whole other level. All we are is memories and I just want to create as many as I can with her and the people I love.
Always appreciate her before it's too late.
@@fayeezullah9628 I will :)
Amazing outlook on life. I hope all is going well for you much love my guy
Ricky Gervais for the emmy nomination (for acting)? He gave such a layered performance that had more complexity than the first series. It goes without saying that the writing is phenomenal, the way it makes you feel so many different emotions.
🤞
Nah, they won't give em that. He roasted the judges.
@@iloveplasticbottles True, with his monologue at the Golden Globes last year, they probably wouldn't touch him with a 15 feet pole.
@@iloveplasticbottles he hosted that show 5 times, he was their pet monkey and is an insiders insider which is why he has been able to make quiet a few horrible films, he wont get an emmy because this kind of mawkish material doesnt play well on this side of the pond.
Layered. Great word
I finished it a week ago and it still hurts me when Ricky cries... Please save him
I sobbed throughout every season. I'd be splitting my side laughing one minute and bawling the next. No other show has ever hit me so profoundly. It's like all the lessons you need in life to live .
I swear. ❤this show
He’s not just a comedian, he’s a fucking sensation actor
You'd want to have a heart of stone not to cry during this clip. There are times where you get really angry with Tony's behaviour, especially when he gives that bloke money to kill himself with an od. There are times where you laugh uncontrollably due to Ricky's incredible writing....and there are times where you sob uncontrollably when you realise that Tony is just another bloke trying to navigate through hurt and loss. This show is an absolute masterclass. Superb.
The ending of season 2 is one of the few times I've cried to a show or a movies. He's a fucking great actor
The ending destroyed me, I don't think I cried as hard for anything in my life as much as that ending.
I am blown away by Ricky’s performance. Wow. I didn’t know he was anything other than a comedy actor. What makes this particularly difficult to watch is seeing someone we all know as the one making everyone laugh experience so much pain. I absolutely crumbled with him everytime he had a meltdown. I wanna jump through the screen and hug him.
I lost my beautiful bride of over 30 years in late 2019. We were best friends since high school and now I do a podcast on grief and loss and recommend to people that have experienced loss to watch this series. While the language and some of the content can be a bit strong, the message is spot on. When this series came out I cried at every episode but it was a good cry because even though it was a television show it felt as if it was my story being told and somebody actually got it, they "Rick Gervais" truly nailed what loss feels like for a younger, working age widower. His performance was so convincing I had to search and see if he had lost a spouse because it was so incredibly well done. I've now completed all three seasons and was so sad to see the series end, but at the same time the series finale was absolutely beautiful and gave me a sense of peace. I will always love my Pam and after watching this series I'm fine never meeting anyone else because just as Tony became comfortable knowing Lisa is the only woman he will ever love, I truly believe Pam is the only woman I'll ever love.
Iam truly sorry for your loss, mate...
Sorry for your loss buddy.
Sorry for your loss.
Would love to hear your podcast.
This show is an absolute masterpiece.
It's incredible how Ricky puts Tony's character down, I recognize everything. I recommend After Life to anyone who's asking me how I'm doing.
I miss you Stephanie... (✝︎46)
For some reason the hospital porter one got me more than it should have. Some people work so hard all their life and never feel like they are recognised, and most times never actually are recognised. I remember thinking I wish that was a real moment cus god knows how much that would have meant to that person.
The good night scene is so heart wrenching and sad .Ricky showed his brilliant acting skills apart from his amazing writing skills he is a genius
Ricky Gervais is a national treasure... thank you
The characters of people in this series, they're amazing. Every single character is a gem
I am sobbing, thank you Ricky. For all those I’ve lost and all my mistakes.
Yep
Just lost my mum at a great age of 82 but you always expect your parents to be here even though I know she missed my dad whom we lost two years ago.god bless mum and dad love you forever .😢❤❤xxx
This show hit home way to hard for me. I've never been "triggered" by any form of media in my life than the way this show accurately portrays depression.
I don't think grief can be called depression. Grief can be lived through with clarity that is not present in depression..You walk through grief with an understanding that the world is functioning quite well, even though you have decided to step back for a while...Once you have experienced grief, you can recognize someones else's pain and suffering..Grief has to be born, it cannot be rushed..
I watch this and pretend Ann is talking to me, because honestly, I feel like giving up nearly every day, and she makes me feel a bit better.
This series makes me feel less alone.
I hope things improve for you and you're able to utilise the people close to and allow them to support you.
I agree, her lines are so well written! What she says would be really comforting to someone who'd suffered a bereavement.
❤️
Mr Gervais please please make a prequel, I want to see how you and Lisa met and got together. If there's any justice at all in the arts world you should get the highest awards for sheer acting brilliance.
The finale scene had me in bits! Hats off to Mr. Gervais
This show made me laugh and cry more times than anything I've watched before. Being able to bring emotions out of the viewer is one of the most beautiful aspects of the entertainment industry, and it needs to be more commonly focused on.
They got a bunch of comedians and made them play serious parts in the story and it worked beautifully
comedians think about pain and make the darkest jokes they can think of because that's one way to endure pain. i guess that's why they play it perfectly
2:20 his voice cracking is just heartbreaking
This is the first time I saw something with Ricky and now I realise how good an actor he is. This show is written so well and he has acted brilliantly!!
This show represents true life unlike any other show that I have seen. It shows utter devastation and heartbreak. Along with all of the silliness and humor and most of all, hope, just like real life does in even the saddest moments
Ricky takes you on the journey with him, you feel every step of his grief because he plays it so real. Excellent acting from everyone in this amazing series.
Ricky Gervais is a genius. What can't he do
Only once you have stood in the deepest of valleys can you truly appreciate the beautiful of the highest mountain.
-You gotta say it back or I won't sleep.
-Goodnight
-You said it?
-Yeah
The voice crack in his "yeah" breaks you.
That was the most tear inducing moment for me
With all the laughs and sadness in equal measure with this show, the one that sticks with me most is Kath. Her loneliness and awkwardness in trying to be cool and fit in and it not working at all breaks my heart. She’s so lonely. I loved they had that moment together in the cafe in season 2. Ricky connected with her finally and she let down her defences and was truly herself.
I have never experienced any other program from any individual that had me splitting my sides with laughter with an added stitch, wiping away the tears and swallowing to rid the lump in my throat,, all in the space of a few minutes. I always liked Ricky Gervais, but as a human, I've grown to love him for what he has brought to me in these series. Thank you Ricky.

If that all could be installed into everyone , life would be very different 💗
All very well giving advice when you're young. Trouble is for many of us life never gets better, in fact it gets worse, especially when our health starts to fail and nothing can be done about it. After losing the love of our life, no one else comes along. We wait decades to see if things get better. Then we realise we shouldn't have waited and should have just ended it a very long time ago instead of going through it.
@@nessuno1984 I'm not young. I'm 60. I lost the love of my life in 2009. In the spring of 2015 I was diagnosed with cancer and underwent chemo therapy. It turned my life around. I realised what a beautiful place this earth is. I wanted to see flowers blooming in spring, feel the sun on my face in summer, walk through leaves on the ground in autumn and feel the crisp air in winter. I started enjoying the simple things of life more. In 2020 I was disagnosed with a different cancer and had to have radio therapy. I have no real idea how successful this has been yet, but I look forward to living as many days as possible. It's not easy but life can be beautiful.
Ricky Gervais is the best Actor ever. I've never seen anything more authentic than his show. It's especially hard because he is basically playing himself.
Gentle genius
... Ricky could never of written this at a better time of which we all need to embrace our humanity and humility all in the same breath. 💞
Ricky Gervais is such a diverse actor!! From comedian to drama in a heartbeat. I am in season 2 and all I have done is either laughed or cried nothing between. This is a bloody brilliant series we can all relate to in one way or another.
The Postcard from Pat is so heartwarming and then Rickys acting is heartbreaking... so simple but a beautiful exchange
40 year old man here, haven’t cried for a long time over a tv show but watching this show with my partner made me sob and laugh at the same time. I think this shows how long men suffer with grief and would be a fairly accurate portrayal of how we deal with it overall. Having a good woman by your side shouldn’t be taken for granted
I’m 19 and thankfully I haven’t lost anyone in my life yet. This show has helped me appreciate everyone in my life so much more than I already did. I truly treasure each second I spend with my family, my girlfriend and my friends. I now say “I love you” to people so much more to the people In my life more than I did previously. Thank you Mr Gervais, I appreciate life more than ever before ❤️
This season was amazing, even better than the first I think. I was sobbing and bursting out laughing at every episode, can’t wait for the next episodes.
I think this show changed my whole perspective on life and in the best way. ❤️
So many well written scenes, and Ricky delivered. I love when emotions you cant explain are articulated in a way that makes the viewer look inward to their own life. I am an American and the brits are so good at making you feel so sad and happy at the same time.
Personally, I believe this is the most beautifully brilliant, endearing and funny show ever created and acted. It is brutally honest, heartbreaking and brilliant.
Yep! Its Gervais's best show, bit worried about Season 3 though, about Kath in particular
I don't remember the last time i was crying until ending scene to series 2. That was absolutely heartbreaking scene.
Just remarkable art. Brilliantly written, brilliantly directed, brilliantly acted by such an excellent cast throughout. This must be his magnum opus, Gervais at his utter best with his ability to shock, embarrass and then take you to to such deep emotional places that it breaks your heart. Utterly fantastic
Writers of serious drama would give their arm to be able to write like this.
We get fed such a hackneyed stodge of mawkish rubbish parading itself as drama where our emotional buttons are pressed in such predictable ways, that this actually shocked me.
It was so real, so true and so beautiful -much respect to all that made this possible!
Ricky I truly started respecting you..not just as an actor but as a human being too.. Brilliant performance with such heartbreaking moments which every person can relate to at some point or the other......Love you Ricky
God, this show is so brilliant.
Watch the whole series 3 times now, and still all the feels and tears every time.
And hearing some of the songs on the radio, brings tears.
And watching these moments brings tears.
I’m sure I’ll sit down and watch the whole series again some time soon.
You know, just to have a good cry again.
Gervais is a brilliant actor and writer. He plays all his parts so well, you feel like you know the character.
This is beautiful.
Ricky Gervais is a wonderful actor
His acting is so real and on point. It's like he is not even pretending and showing real emotions of grief.
I can never finish watching this without tears rolling down...
'Now I can sleep' always hits me hard.
Ricky has always been talented but this series is just wonderfully heartbreaking. I've experienced grief (I guess so many of us have sadly) and it feels so true to life. Bravo. PS - I adore Sandy. She is lovely.
I Love you Ricky.. the 2nd series had me in tears. So powerful. I really do hope you will be bringing out a 3rd. There is so much more to tell.
That scene on the bench when he finally cries and she comforts him hit me differently. Idk what it was about it but one night i re-watched that scene and i just burst into tears, thinking about my granddad. Maybe it was grief that i suppressed, loss that i hadn’t yet recognized, or something else, but that scene just pushed it out of me. It was really hard to stop crying but holy... it was so good to let it all out.
The intensity of the sleeping pill scene, for the first viewing when you don't know the outcome.... I say first viewing cos I watch this show over and over, it only gets slightly easier
The goodnight scene absolutely breaks me every time I watch it! Genius writing
Heartbreaking
I lost my mother days before my first deployment to AFG. I missed saying goodbye. I missed the funeral. Still have hours of video of her that I can't bring myself to watch. Am now approaching my 50's and I still think of my mom and miss her everyday. This show is so important to me. Thanks.
It's only a matter of time Ricky wins an Oscar for his acting or writing......we already know his talent he don't need this validation but it would be cool this bloke from a council estate with an old bathtub in the back garden a crazy / take the micky family inspires others ....long life everyone
This series relate so much for anyone who've lost their loved ones taken away from life.
Honestly the most beautiful show ive ever watched. I cried and laughed sometimes both.
Absolutely loved this series. Tears were streaming down my face in each episode. But the last one, I was properly ugly crying with snot. Beautiful and tender. Loved Ricky’s performance. Wonderful writing and sensational characters.
I have never seen this program but I saw this on RUclips and WOW, Ricky Gervais can really act, he managed to bring tears to my eyes.
Love him or hate him (and I LOVE him), Ricky Gervais is a sublime writer who (sensibly) surrounds himself with extraordinary actors to make his creations come to life. And come to life they DO!
Never watched something so utterly brilliant in my entire life!!
Bril!. Ricky hits the nail on the head not just with what his character is going through, but with what everyone else is too. Nuff said!
Oh shit thanks for this. Crying again as if the first time round wasn''t enough.
I’m not very emotional in fact I fight regularly in combat sports and have been shown nothing but toxic masculinity growing up.
This show man really gets me emotional. It’s a beautiful expression of grief

Most People can make a Sad Story or a Funny Story but only few People can combine it in such a beautiful way. Thank You Ricky!!!
This entire series captures, kindness, empathy and compassion at many moments to a tee. The awareness and insight of grief and its complexity demonstrated in depth so well. Highlights the profound impact of the generosity of one's heart.Thank you!
Ending was absolutely realistic and phenomenal.Well written master piece by Ricky gervais. This is the first time I have seen him in serious stuff!!
My wife offed herself and this show helped me through it, This is true to its form. I dont even have an imagination and I could relate. Cheers
I binge watched this series over a space of 4 days…
No other show or movie has made me go from howling with laughter to crying like a child like this…
It’s tragically hysterical…

Theyve made benches from this show for strangers who need a chat to chat about things things, theres one near where i live ricky has really brought heart to many trully a good guy whilst making people laugh, theres a secret message in there well done id say hes the best famous person out there
Yeah! Then some scumbags & cowards destroyed the bench from the show purely to virtue signal & to vilify Gervais one of the most generous celebs on the planet.
I binge watched season 2 for the 4th time last night and it just breaks your heart every time. Had me in tears like always. Thank you so much Ricky.
I could never do that, barely made it through 2nd time round, its the most emotionally draining show I have watched
my best friend died with cancer when i was in year 3 and i still miss her from this day😢😢😢 she may be shy sometimes but it seems different without her but that is life
My partner has just passed away from cancer. We were together for 34 years, I sometimes struggle to breathe.
Ricky, you are amazing, i lost my mum and dad in my early 20s, and 20 years on the pain is still unbearable, i miss them so much, ide give anything to have five minutes with them.
This bloke, the mighty Mr Gervais, can do no wrong, end of. Bless you Ricky for all you have given us. Much respect x
The distress and worry of your best friend can be the difference between your life and the the void... We underestimate how much our furry friends need us and how much we need them. This scene literally put me on edge knowing how that feeling is.
