    This morning my dear friend who lives in Missouri was texting me about this book...b/c that is how impressed he was with it. He told me a generalized description as well as describes one particular horrific scene. I instantly Google "Black Leopard, Red Wolf" and read more. I was at work and didn't know if I was going to be working late or getting off early. I live in Hawaii, on Oahu, and the only bookstore we have is a Barnes & Noble in Honolulu. I called B&N to make sure they had it and they did and had them hold a copy for me. I worked my ass off to get my work finished by 9:30PM, then I raced over to get it because I knew I had to start this series ASAP. I just got home about an hour ago, (I read the first two chapters in the car while my roommate was driving) and now I am settling in after watching your great review that has only hyped me up more for what I am sure will be a long Friday night of reading such a beautiful and one-of-a-kind tale.
    P.S. "Alt Masc" I love that t-shirt! :-)

    Wow - Your enthusiasm shows! I have an advanced copy too and for the same reasons you mentioned, I shelved it to pick up closer to the release date. However, you've convinced me to move it up. I've been a fan of the author since his first release and I'm very excited about this series.

    • @EricKarlAnderson
      @EricKarlAnderson  5 лет назад

      I do get over-excited, but it's just how I feel. :)
      I also wanted to make sure I wasn't rushing to read it right before publication because it's a novel that demands a lot of time (not just because of the amount of pages but the detail and complexity) - but, of course, I think it's so worth giving it that time.

  • @SM-vr8dz
    @SM-vr8dz 5 лет назад

    Your enthusiasm is infectious! I'm interested in this book but feel a but cautious about it. I'm not a high fantasy fan. I like magical realism, but tend to have a hard time with fantasy, and am not a fan of book series. Maybe when the book comes out I will rewatch this video to reinvigorate my interest. Your description of shadow people and witches trading in body parts though, woah! I'm pretty convinced I need to read this book now.

    • @EricKarlAnderson
      @EricKarlAnderson  5 лет назад +2

      Trust me, it's so original. But I'm sure other opinions will be coming out thick and fast when it nears publication date so maybe you can scan a wide array of reviews to see if you think it'll be for you. I bet you'd find it fascinating though. :)

    I just finished this. It took me a long time to read because I felt I needed to read it slowly and thoroughly. I think it is a very finely written, imaginative piece of work. I can't say I loved it because that word seems too soft for this book. . So I'll say that I greatly admired it - was even in awe of it at some sections, and I really enjoyed being along for the ride. I fully intend to read the next in the series. There was never a dull moment. And I love the way the author made you work a bit for the pleasure of the book. He demanded your attention. I always love that in a book.

    So so so so glad to hear such great thoughts about Marlon James' new book. Was nervous when I first read about his dive into fantasy, especially it being a trilogy. Very glad to hear it isn't "dumbed-down" James. Cannot wait to get my hands on this book!

      Eric Karl Anderson I do plan on reviewing this on my channel as well. But I’m gonna say my largest gripe is the length of the story, so much could have been cut and it still would have been just as dynamic. The Dolingo chapter and Traker’s run in with the hyenas were my favorite snips of his writing. I stopped caring about the kid ages ago which made it feel like the book went on forever.

    Eric, Marlon James is going to love you more for this great review of "The African Game of Thrones." It would be interesting to hear from established fantasy novelists from Africa about how Marlon James had done with this genre. (Eric, I have a few questions for you. Do you keep a record of all the books you read? What habits and rituals do you have when you finish reading a book? These are some of the questions I discuss in my FINISHED THE BOOK TAG. And I tagged you! It would be interesting to see your responses to those questions.)

    • @EricKarlAnderson
      @EricKarlAnderson  5 лет назад

      I'd be curious about what other fantasy writers think about the book too.
      I write on my blog about almost every book I read in full. There are some I DNF which I don't discuss but I usually talk about them in wrap ups and sometimes I feel so uncertain how to write about a book I don't write a full review. As far as rituals, I like to capture how I feel about a book and give some summaries and quotes as a way of recalling how I felt about it. Usually after a few years I'll have forgot any specifics so for me it's a way of recalling the experience of it.
      Thanks for tagging me!
