This morning my dear friend who lives in Missouri was texting me about this book...b/c that is how impressed he was with it. He told me a generalized description as well as describes one particular horrific scene. I instantly Google "Black Leopard, Red Wolf" and read more. I was at work and didn't know if I was going to be working late or getting off early. I live in Hawaii, on Oahu, and the only bookstore we have is a Barnes & Noble in Honolulu. I called B&N to make sure they had it and they did and had them hold a copy for me. I worked my ass off to get my work finished by 9:30PM, then I raced over to get it because I knew I had to start this series ASAP. I just got home about an hour ago, (I read the first two chapters in the car while my roommate was driving) and now I am settling in after watching your great review that has only hyped me up more for what I am sure will be a long Friday night of reading such a beautiful and one-of-a-kind tale.
P.S. "Alt Masc" I love that t-shirt! :-)
I'm glad you got the urgent itch to read it and hope you find it as inspiring as I did. It's quite a wild ride and I know I will discover much more when I reread it - the sign of a great book! 😀
Wonderful news and your excitement is certainly contagious. I shall see if I can prebook it now. Of course, I read the Seven Killings and was over the moon when he won so now I know there's more to look forward to. Thank so much for letting us know!
Excited Eric is best Eric ❤️
😆
One of my most anticipated reads of 2019! So happy you enjoyed it. I really enjoyed Brief History, too, and I’ve been looking forward to seeing what he’s done with this fantasy. You lucky duck! ^-^ 🤗
I know I'm really lucky! It's epic! Hope you enjoy it too and looking forward to hearing what you think. 😄
I am currently reading this novel . I never read this genre but am thoroughly engrossed ! Thank you for your review !
I'm so glad you're enjoying it. It is extraordinary!
Great heads-up Eric! Wasn't even on my radar! Really getting enthusiastic about next years release! Thank you :D
I ordered this book on the first day of pre-order. I am a huge Marlon James fan. Cannot wait for February. Loved the ending of this video btw.
Thanks! 😄
Your excitement during this video was so contagious!
I’ve never heard of Marlon James before this, but his book sounds so innovative and imaginative - I just may have to check it out!
This new book is a big departure from his writing which is mostly about recent events realistically portrayed, but he's such a fascinating and intelligent writer I hope you enjoy his books!
Firstly, fabulous T-shirt! Secondly, I’m so relieved to hear this book lives up to the hype - I’m seeing it everywhere so was did worry about that! And that cover 😻😻😻
It's worth it just for the cover! 😄
Yeah...I need my winter break to get here so I can plunge myself into this epic novel! Great video, per usual!😊
Thank you! I'm looking forward to hearing wht you think of it. It's a wild journey! :)
It's going to take me forever to read those 600+ pages.
This is my most anticipated book of the entire year. So far I have seen nothing but good stuff about this. Great review as always.
Also that shirt is everything
Thanks! Hope you enjoy it. It's truly a wonder!
Oh, I have the proof too. I was waiting till Jan, but now you made me very curious :) I'm going to my library now to pick it up! Thanks for the video.
I'd love to know what you think, Umut! It'll be a good imaginative journey to get lost in over winter. 😀
Wow - Your enthusiasm shows! I have an advanced copy too and for the same reasons you mentioned, I shelved it to pick up closer to the release date. However, you've convinced me to move it up. I've been a fan of the author since his first release and I'm very excited about this series.
I do get over-excited, but it's just how I feel. :)
I also wanted to make sure I wasn't rushing to read it right before publication because it's a novel that demands a lot of time (not just because of the amount of pages but the detail and complexity) - but, of course, I think it's so worth giving it that time.
Your enthusiasm is infectious! I'm interested in this book but feel a but cautious about it. I'm not a high fantasy fan. I like magical realism, but tend to have a hard time with fantasy, and am not a fan of book series. Maybe when the book comes out I will rewatch this video to reinvigorate my interest. Your description of shadow people and witches trading in body parts though, woah! I'm pretty convinced I need to read this book now.
Trust me, it's so original. But I'm sure other opinions will be coming out thick and fast when it nears publication date so maybe you can scan a wide array of reviews to see if you think it'll be for you. I bet you'd find it fascinating though. :)
Glad I watched your video. I've been reading this and have been a bit over whelmed. Now I'm more motivated to get through it! Thank you.
I feel like it's one of those books where it's best to let it wash over you and just go with the experience. It will probably get easier as you get further into it.
I just finished this. It took me a long time to read because I felt I needed to read it slowly and thoroughly. I think it is a very finely written, imaginative piece of work. I can't say I loved it because that word seems too soft for this book. . So I'll say that I greatly admired it - was even in awe of it at some sections, and I really enjoyed being along for the ride. I fully intend to read the next in the series. There was never a dull moment. And I love the way the author made you work a bit for the pleasure of the book. He demanded your attention. I always love that in a book.
Yes, exactly! I think that's a very fine way of summarising the feeling of it. I'm glad you got so much out of it.
I couldn't quite get through A Brief History of Seven Killings, but I'm absolutely going to have to give James another shot with this books!
I cannot wait to read this! I hope you're right and that this book dominates 2019.
So so so so glad to hear such great thoughts about Marlon James' new book. Was nervous when I first read about his dive into fantasy, especially it being a trilogy. Very glad to hear it isn't "dumbed-down" James. Cannot wait to get my hands on this book!
Also, LOVE the shirt!!
Nathan Brown I agree! Would love to know where the shirt is from, Eric? 😊
It's epic! 😄 And thank you.
@@hedgiecc It's from Swish Embassy. Really fun t-shirts there.
Eric Karl Anderson I shall check them out! Thank you.
I love how you talk about books passionately ❤️. That book cover is definitely beautiful it has intrigued me.
Isn't it gorgeous?
Eric Karl Anderson yes for sure! It reminds me of Rorschach
This sounds interesting. I own A Broef History of Seven Killings but have been avoiding it due to the size of it! I think I need to move it near the top of my TBR and preorder this one
Yeah I’m stoked!! Loved ABHOSK and can only imagine what a writer of James skill can do with this genre.
It's a humongous undertaking to plan a trilogy like this, but he's clearly talented enough to pull it off!
I mentioned this one in my highly anticipated for 2019 vid. Love that you enjoyed it but will finish watching after reading (I’m afraid of spoilers for this one). You have gotten me even more excited!
Ah, you don't need to fear. I think it's fairly spoiler free, but do come back once you've read it and let me know what you think of the novel. I'll be fascinated to hear your reaction.
I will!
Eric Karl Anderson I do plan on reviewing this on my channel as well. But I’m gonna say my largest gripe is the length of the story, so much could have been cut and it still would have been just as dynamic. The Dolingo chapter and Traker’s run in with the hyenas were my favorite snips of his writing. I stopped caring about the kid ages ago which made it feel like the book went on forever.
I'm so excited for this when it comes out! 🤗🤗
It's aaaaamazing! 😄
I can't believe someone could possibly listen to you in this video and think "oh, a fantasy novel, I don't wanna read a fantasy novel". seriously! you're so passionate about this book and it seems such an amazing story! I was already anticipating this one, but now I'm truly excited for it :D
Very inspiring review, I’m totally excited to read this now! I thought Seven Killings was awesome & absolutely deserved all the prizes.
Glad I could give you a little preview. Hope you enjoy it!
Eric Karl Anderson do you think we could be looking at a potential Booker winner?
Yes! My most anticipated book of the year! The last book I read was A Brief History of Seven Killings because I wanted to see what his style is like. I’ve never been more excited by a novel based off of the author’s excitement.
That's great you got acquainted with his style. It's really interesting how it's in ways similar in this new novel but obviously the setting, types of character and pervading mood is soooo different.
You made me excited for this book now. But still, I want to read 7 killings first.
I think i would read anything you endorse with this degree of joy and enthusiasm. Plus I love your t-shirt.
Thanks! 😄
I’m soooooo excited about this book 🙌🙌
🎉
Never read any Marlon James's novels, but this one sounds really great and I will defo try it.
Yay! 😄
I can't wait to read this!
Hi Eric! How do you get advanced copies of novels?
I read the proof for work and absolutely loved it. It's my favourite book of the year and I hope it will win all the prizes
Yes! 🎉
Eric, Marlon James is going to love you more for this great review of "The African Game of Thrones." It would be interesting to hear from established fantasy novelists from Africa about how Marlon James had done with this genre. (Eric, I have a few questions for you. Do you keep a record of all the books you read? What habits and rituals do you have when you finish reading a book? These are some of the questions I discuss in my FINISHED THE BOOK TAG. And I tagged you! It would be interesting to see your responses to those questions.)
I'd be curious about what other fantasy writers think about the book too.
I write on my blog about almost every book I read in full. There are some I DNF which I don't discuss but I usually talk about them in wrap ups and sometimes I feel so uncertain how to write about a book I don't write a full review. As far as rituals, I like to capture how I feel about a book and give some summaries and quotes as a way of recalling how I felt about it. Usually after a few years I'll have forgot any specifics so for me it's a way of recalling the experience of it.
Thanks for tagging me!
Eric, back again with the early predictions!
And yes I've been going on about the new Olga Tokarczuk for months and it's not out in North America till Feb.... I feel like an asshole lol
Well, my track record isn't great. But I sitll insist upon my soothsaying abilities! haha
@@LauraFreyReadinginBed You shouldn't! I love it when people take it upon themselves to be a book's champion and personal campaigner!
Some people are gender fluid, I myself feel stuck between the sexes often, so yes, it's a topic that should be talked about more and thus written about in fiction too. Oh my goodness, that book cover is so gorgeous!! Thanks for another great video Eric! PS do you reckon it will be on the Booker Long List? Ha ha. Great video ending!!
I'm in the middle of this novel, currently, and, yes ... It is so great!
Glad you're enjoying it!
love your shirt!
I absolutely hated A Brief History of Seven Killings, but now thanks to you I need to read this!
Just Juan Reader Just curious, what did you hate about it?
THE HYPE IS REAL
Trust me, it's worth it! 😄
Michael B. Jordan's bought the film rights to Black Leopard, while
Children of Blood and Bone has found a director for the movie (Rick Famuyiwa), so it looks like we'll soon be getting two African-themed fantasy films (neither of which will or should be exactly like their books).
Where did you get that t-shirt? It's wicked.
From the clothing website Swish Embassy. 😄🦄
This sounds amazing
It is! :)
It is very well done !
I cannot wait to read this. I love the entire concept and have heard that the writing itself is gorgeous. It never made sense to me that characters in classic fantasy could deal with magic races and magic powers, but they were all hetero. I just need to finish what I’m reading so I can start this.
It is supremely good writing! Hope you enjoy it!
Just heard him on NPR going to get the book!
Is it February yet???
It'll be here before we know it! 😄
I’m so excited to read this book I just won it in a giveaway from the publisher 🤩
Congrats! Hope you enjoy it. It's a wild ride! 😄📚
Book: completely centered around unnecessary, gruesome rape scenes
Eric: the only thing I dislike is the lack of unicorns 😇
Sold!
I adore Marlon James. He's smart, a great writer, plus, well, he's very easy on the eye! I look forward to reading this novel :)
Marlon rocks!
Totally!
Color me convinced, especially after being called out at 4:47.
Hooray! Yeah, I mean I can't remember the last time I read anything that's strictly classified as a fantasy novel but Marlon James gives such a vividly intelligent take on characters and society it's quite exceptional.
