Never knew much about Rodney except his affiliation with Zoo's beginning. What a great interview. Dudes like himself got us to where we are now. Rad human being.
SHUT came before Zoo I skated and went to the factory when we could. I rode that board that’s on the wall of that interview. They were not the best but it was from NY. And it was street. We didn’t have Vert. Zoo Came in the 90,$
I listened to this one at work this morning on Spotify. I came here just to say how great of an episode this was. So much history/story telling in this one. I am here for it. Thank you!!
SOO glad this finally happened! I'm not that much younger than Rodney and from across the river in NJ and grew up skating the same scene (Brooklyn Banks/NYC, Jersey, Philly, etc), did a magazine called Rare Breed in the late 90's, had personal friends that rode for Shut, etc and knew about a lot of his story described here, ... and if there's anything I can state from it, is that universally, Rodney is widely considered a legend and pioneer for our culture, and an awesome guy. Seeing Rodney get his flowers here gives me the warm fuzzies, this story NEEDED to be told! Rodney, you are one RAD human!!! ❤🤙 Thank you so much Nine Club! 🙏🏼
Rodney is a few years older than me but I lived in Metuchen when he was really starting to hit. I know the first hill he bombed. And I loved his parents so much. They were amazing people. So cool to hear this history.
If I could like this more than once, I would like it continually until infinity. Millions and millions and millions of times! Such an awesome interview. Loved this!
Good lord!! This episode was so much heavier than I was expecting!! Wow I was completely captivated by Rodney and his storytelling!! 💯💯🔥🔥❤️❤️👑👑 He can definitely paint a picture when he talks and you can tell it's so pure and from his heart!! Absolutely amazing!! Probably my favorite episode to date!
I want to thank you for hosting Rodney. And I want to thank Rodney for doing this. He has stories for days -- stories that us old guys can relate to, and hopefully the younger people can learn something. Here's an idea: Get him and Mike V. on the show together and set a Guinness record for the longest podcast. 😆
Had never heard of Rodney Smith. This episode was awesome. Some people don't care about the history but I find it fascinating. More episodes like this! Straight killer.
I’ll never forget Rodney blessing me with the Zoo York 9-11 tribute deck they made shortly after the September 11th attack. I still have it hanging in my bedroom and I will never sell or trade it 🗽 Love you for that Rod❗️
Chris has become an amazing interviewer, he has his own style but has gotten great at adapting the interview to fit how the guests want to conversate, this was a great episode and Rodney is a legend!
Chris has an art,a pure talent for interviewing different guests...I know I may be echoing your comments, but I love the way crob goes about his craft....(apart from switch flip mannys, and a pro sk8tr).
I'm 50, from NY, and I skated with the early Shut guys on several occasions back when I was a little grommet, but, with Rodney, only once. Someone I knew who was tight with Shut invited me to a private session down at the Banks. It was the middle of a weekday, so no one was there--just me, a few friends, and OG Shut: Coco, Mike Kepper, Bruno, and Rodney. Rodney was only there for maybe 10 minutes, though, because he was doing slappys on the planters (if you've been there and seen those planters, you know how sick that is!) and busted his kingpin. I didn't even know snapping kingpins was possible back then. That's why he will forever be my definition of "gnarl"!
He is the most humble, KIND and genuine human around. FABULOUS interview: DETAILS and real history are so appreciated 🙇🏼♀️ GREAT JOB all of you… Love to hear more from him😇
Missed #30 & 31 live shows due to extra work duties. Sucks but this interview really got all the mysterious SHUT skateboard secrets out. Loved every minute of this interview being from the East Coast and living in NYC for 25 years now with 20 of them as a yellow taxi driver. We now try and pull over and get into the Lower East Side Skatepark or the curb at Spring & Lafayette St. Bought my first board after 10 years not skating close to that curb. A Shut board with black Independent trucks. Went another 10 years after 2011 not skating and picked up my Jawbreaker part 2 Eldridge deck. Big fan of the Chocolate idea. My friend who ripped his mini ramp to shreds is married to a Jenkins. Whether it's a relative of Andy probably not but we are all connected really close I feel. ❤ Rodney a true East Coast legend. Brooklyn Banks kinda became the Lower East Side Skatepark without the brick banks.
Yall give me what i was missing once i found out about ONvm (in 2006 after it was already defunct) but this is the education content i love. Skateboarding is awesome
The SHUT crew was so revered in NJ/NYC. The pop of the shark deck was insane. Rod created boards for street skaters. Props to Nine Club for giving these legendary figures time to tell their stories. Wish Rodney all the best in his future endeavors. Thank you for all you did for us NJ/NYC skaters back in the day.
Crob you talked over your guest a few times in a weird way. When he was talking about soccer he was trying to tell you soccer was pretty rare in America at that point. It wasn’t like when you were growing up and everyone knew what soccer was. Awesome episode. As an east coaster this stuff was so interesting. I probably started like exactly 10 years after Rodney. We got shut boards in our town.
Damn. Can't wait to press play on this one. Rodney has been a crucial part of skateboarding's history at some of its most interesting and historically important times. Love these episodes with behind-the-scenes legends! Chris and Rog, thank you!
Yo finally finished watching this show and it was very enlightening. Love the story telling of the business end and rad industry stories. I’m from nyc had no idea who created Zooyork. Wipe ya$ mouth! Nine club rule$!
As an east coaster in the late 80’s, the myth of SHUT at that moment was REAL. The word of mouth and the rumors about the crew was legendary. Respect Rod and crew!
Amazing episode! Would love to see Alyasha Owerka-Moore on here as well! I feel like it would be a great link between Rodney Smith and Eli Gesner’s episodes. 👍👍
Rodney is one of the raddest dudes to roll with and one of the best people I have ever known. 100%Skater4Life Authentic OG... Shut and Zoo York were visionary and had a huge impact on our NJ/NYC skate fam as well as in the industry and culture of Skateboarding in general world wide. Big Ups Nine Club. This episode was another banger.
Amazing interview. If I'm not mistaken, Brian Blake gets 4th at that Phoenix contest. That was Dec. of '89. If Rod goes to SF after the contest, Jason and Dune would have been involved in putting together Blind, not Stereo. And that would have been through, obviously, Rocco, not DLX. Apparently Dune and Felix were supposed to be a part of Blind in the very beginning, but then went with World.
Such a great episode. You can really get a mental picture for what he was talking about, very great storyteller. As an east coaster, it was sick learning more about shut and zoo york
Yo can we get Kerry Getz on here?… I’m sure y’all been trying, but that would be a 🔥 interview! The man’s style and skating was way ahead of its time, and at the same time timeless…..
Awe these stories are pure gold! and Rodney is a wholesome and calm storyteller, his voice is soothing. and I totally agree with skate company over saturation. If I work in the skateboard industry, I'm going to reach out to all the companies I love, big or small, and find a job helping them. Big Love!
Whaaaaaa??!!! From shootouts with the Kkk to wearing five, six different shirts- this and Eli's episode seem their own category, don't really run like most other episodes. Wild to those who didn't know any of this. A mysterious name is now demystified - big ups yo
Fasuto is such a legend - is there a book on that dude? What a pioneer! Not to take any shine off Rodney - I love hearing from the dudes who were driving the craft and making skateboarding possible for all of us to enjoy! And man, Zoo York was a whole different vibe, and as a west coast kid, it really came through! I grew up in Orange County, CA, and the east coast vibe was lowkey intimidating. Lol
I saw Shut team skate the N.S.A. am regional East combined at Kona. There was curb out from in Kona. We were doing ollie to "stall" (tail, nosepick, 50/50) , Shut team were hauling ass f/s Tail slides , 1st time I saw a ollie blunt on a curb.. They are doing stuff then on curbs in 87 that modern day curb is today. Shut team ALL were in the top 10 in Street at that contest.. The team was picked apart the next year..
I was that little kid who was fresh on skating. "Is that cool older dude home?" These podcasts make me feel the world isn't a crazy place and I have a place with cool misunderstood people where I fit in.
What a great story ! So cool how there are so many stories of the lesser known people that shaped the industry. There were MANY mid west and east coast skaters that would have been pro or at least sponsered.
Dude ! This is gonna be the one for me ! I Remember riding my first Barker Barrett board and the Shut shark. Yea they weren’t the best but they represented who I was and where I lived. Jump back on homey. I started in 87 and been riding again for the last few years. Never really quit but definitely took way too many breaks. You can still sk8 homez.
@nigelgeiger6020 🤙Cheers Bro thanks supportive vibes from Australia... you'd laugh at my luck how life can change in a day....think I was cursed...I "was" amped up - work mates at warehouse where worked as job over covid convinced me to come for sk8 sesh with them (my life in 90s as a kid went left field evolved into somethin totally different which I was actually good at was fighting way better than my sk8ing skills = I was prevliged chance to be training fulltime with exclusively thai fighters in 90s then later head door man bouncer of nightclubs which I then started body building so from a 70kg kid to 130kg unit- it was nuts)...but yeh got amped -went online splashed out bought good stuff now as adult can afford (ie Girl pop secret "Malto" deck ,Ace trucks ,spitfire formula 4s =all.good stuff...nice Nike sB Bruin react shoes )....ready to hit park & show these young whipper snappers sum old skool hardcore haha....same week buyin gear freakin got injured at work= slipped on "flat" freakin floor!!!🙃...tore "TFCC" in wrist =year and half later lookin at 3rd surgery to harvest bone even its not even the tip of life changed to cascading effect on my life (couldnt work ,cant train in gym ,work wasnt payin insurance compensation wages, partner separated ,I lived in a affluent million dollar suburb a dream life in home over lookin sea ,total luxury high life to homeless ,depression(suicidal),partner has my pitbull, have 3 sets of lawyers & Barristers in life =went pear shaped but keepin chin up)......sk8 gods must really hate me ...i only wanted to chill in life at do some nose slides ,ollies & few cheeky flips haha....I'll get there again...but I still watch sk8 vids and nine club mean time🤙
anyone remember Lib Tech skateboards from over a decade ago?? those decks were Built WILD.. i can still hop on my bowl rider or coffin and have a great day..
I really like that this guy is talking like we don’t already know everything. A lot of the younger guys just roll like duh everyone knows or they ain’t cool and don’t explain anything.
Said it before, F/A must have the OG Zoo York board molds because that's exactly why I love FA boards because they have that same spoon tail and nose and hella concave, not exactly like OG Zoo but pretty damn close. IDK who remembers the first boards, I loved them.
What an Epic intro into learning to ride. Skateboarding has always been about EVERYBODY, white, black, brown, yellow. Whatever. It's always been about skate.
These episodes are the best!! There are a lot of "legends" in the game. This guy is a straight up pioneer. 1000%
Los campanilleros
I love getting history lessons each week . I'm super happy yall will be streaming twice a week as well ... THANK YOU NINE CLUB!!!
Rodney is an OG triple OG. shotout to him
Exactly, these guys are history

Man... This was such an awesome interview. The OGs are the best episodes as they have so much to say.
That was great, but I feel like there’s at least another 4 hours of history we need Rodney to tell.
Right? I was sure he was gonna beat Mike V's record.

Shout out to Rodney for name checking Donny at Millburn Sports! JT Murphy and I met Jeff Roenning through that place in the late 70s early 80s.

I think we are all a little bit better for listening to this one. History 💯.
Definitely interested in what's next.
Rodney has the truest love for skateboarding. He didn’t even know what it was called when he picked it up. Amazing
Awe these stories are pure gold! and Rodney is a wholesome and calm storyteller, his voice is soothing. and I totally agree with skate company over saturation. When they start talking about Stretch and Bobbito on nine club I get hyped
52:59 does anyone else hear the intro to "1979" by The Smashing Pumpkins or am I just crazy?
This was awesome. Pure passion.
“I always had correct intentions” - that’s a legacy in itself.
everyone hyped on this needs to watch Deathbowl to Downtown and All the Street Are Silent if you haven't
Hell yeah! Thanks guys! Cant wait to dive into this one, a true legend!
Awesome episode!!

Great Episode! SO interesting to hear these stories.
Sick episode!!
that bones shirt that rodney is wearing looks like its from the 80s. so rad
