- Bánh mì xíu mại - Thank you to Auntie Cuc for the warm smiles and delicious Banh mi. Selling for over 40 years now. This visit really blew my mind as I wasn't really ready for what Auntie Cuc offered me which was a banh mi with the xiu mai and braised pork. A game changer forsure. Make sure to look out for this spot just to the left of the market if you are facing it from An Dong street.

Cơm Tấm Cô Giang - What has stayed in the family for two and what looks to be three generations. This Com Tam shows you, you don't have to go far from the city center of Saigon to get some local eats. Located in a fun area of district one, this little street feels like a family neighborhood. Auntie Thanh's perfection with com tam has really shown through as she does many types of dishes to have with your broken rice. For me I have to have something different every time I go back.

I used to live in Võ Văn Tần Street before I went overseas. There are a lot of restaurants and shops there, a heaven of different cuisines, I miss it dearly.
You know what Max. We are tour guides that do the street food tour regularly, but there is one thing that we still need to learn from you: The way you enjoy the food and describe the texture as well as the flavor. You made people's mouth watering just by watching you eat and hearing your narrating. This is so great!

Mr or Ms Tour Guide, allow me to appeal to you. Please teach the Hanoians how to do justice to Vietnamese food. Hanoian F&B operators are so keen on making a fast buck that they compromise in terms of quality and service. If Hanoi had any claim to fame, it was the beef/chicken pho noodles. Even that is going to the dogs in Hanoi. The northerners have been lulled into a false sense of self-assurance thinking their food brings reputation to Vietnam. Northern food is over-rated by some white tourist backpackers on a shoestring budget rave about it on the internet.
Max likes to talk about his passion... eating good food that's cheap. The perfect place is Vietnam... the more clean and organized it gets the more it will cost... inflation will hit Vietnam soon.
Mac's knack for languages is amazing. To be able to speak and understand Vietnamese in a short time is admirable.

Well, Max is a man of Banh Mi. I'm pretty sure he has eaten far more types of Banh Mi than any most of Vietnamese people do. The way he enjoyed Vietnamese Banh Mi is so precious!
The world is crazy. Watching Max eat Vietnamese foods and gush about Com Tam is such a refreshing change from the news. Also, the lady at the Banh Mi stand called Max "cung," which means "darling." That was very sweet.
Just like the ladies at our best little Vietnamese deli call you "honey" once you become a regular. :))

That Cơm tấm sườn bì looks so bloody good. Fun fact: broken rice is one of the rare Vietnamese dishes that's enjoyed exclusively with a fork and spoon!

I ate that com tam place one time and tbh, my expactation wasn't that high cause ya know, not many com tam stalls have good food, and this one even is downtown and downtown food stalls are usually overpriced with mediocre quality but man this place blew my mind, good food with a reasonable price, i enjoyed every last piece of the meal.
The kid in the video actually misheard me and made 2 portions, it was my first time so i didn't wanna risk it cause i'd made that mistake before by ordering too much food without knowing the quality. But now thinking back, i kinda regret for not talking the 2nd portion. that's how good that place is

Com tam is my favourite. Cha is made of minced pork, Chinese mushrooms, onions, clear noodle + plenty of eggs. I like to have com tam + cha + shredded pork + grilled pork. You made a right choice Max, well done.
Dang Max, that's a great tip that I had never heard before about a good sign of the quality of the food is the large number of pre-packaged side dish like soup and fish sauce. That makes perfect sense, those places will be hopping during peak periods and they are going to sell so many portions, a sign of their popularity.
Those chili dishes, full of red hot chili with the yellow fiery seeds remind me of scenes of VN football match with thousands of Vietnamese wearing their red T shirts with the VN yellow stars.
Hey, MR. HANDSOME: My mom uses scissors to cut a lot of our food. She uses it to cut slices of pizza or cut them intp "party squares" and I was introduced to fried eggs to same way that you have your prepared right there. A gooey consistency. Not runny, not hard, not par hard and par runny. Americans can't do what the Asians have done. It doesn't compute. No wonder I've been introduced to many foods and preparations differently than what traditional America has to offer. My mother is Asian. So many friends or acquaintances laughed at how I made foods or how exact I wanted certain foods cooked or how I used implements and utensils to prepare foods. There never was an explanation, now I know. It's all making sense to me. Thank you SO MUCH for helping me understand the nuances of how I am. Different. This is a whole new world to me. 😊❤❤❤

Sài Gòn đa dạng món ăn, muốn ăn gì cũng có, sướng thật đấy
Cơm tấm bì chả là món ăn bình dân , ngày xưa người ta hay ăn sáng trước khi đi làm . Bây giờ có thêm nhiều thứ khác như trứng chiên lòng đào , thịt nướng , gà nướng ... Nhưng tựu trung thì cơm tấm có bì với chả , chan nước mắm tỏi ớt thơm ngon , thêm chút đồ chua dòn dòn nữa là hết xẩy .

I agree with you Max. I swear I love how Vietnamese people fry their eggs. The yolk isn't super runny and the whites are extra crispy.
The egg is quite easy to make and it’s only need 2 things to make it like that. 1) Use a bit more oil than usual, and 2) fry the egg until you see the white start developing some crust, usually I like the crust golden
