    This is a vlog of how a seamstress has mastered the art of shortening jeans and giving it a beautiful hem. The customer also wanted the waist to be taken-in so this technique was demonstrated as well.
    This was a simple hem, usually customers choose this method because they simply just want a hem! However, if you're interested in seeing how we do a hem while keeping the original hem we have 2 videos! The "American Hem" is quicker and simpler yet it has a visible seam allowance on the inside. The "Eurohem" is more complex and tricky but it has no seam allowance and it looks completely untouched.

I also have these little circular plastic gadgets with a blade, which hide the blade when not in use. I've forgotten the name of them. But sooo useful, and definitely better than a seam ripper!

    I have been doing my jean hems exactly like this for decades! It’s so easy & looks very professional! The part of taking in the waist does take quite a long while! This talented lady does this a lot so it’s faster for her plus you have to know where & how to find the right thread to pull so it comes out in one long piece otherwise if you cut it from the wrong side, it wont just “zip” out & then it takes a while! I don’t like cutting out the middle seam like is exampled here! I usually make 2 smaller darts from the waistband down past the pickets, then split them so there is no lump, press them & use Stop Fray! I would rather leave the natural line of the jean seams if I can figure a way to do it! But yes! It does take a while to do this waist alteration unless you are a professional as this nice young lady is! This is not what a beginner should do on an expensive pair of jeans! Save your old, & completely, worn out jeans to practice on! That’s what I use to do! Her work is very good!

    • @DowntownTailoring
      @DowntownTailoring  4 года назад +2

      Thank you so much for those flattering words. You could not be more correct! In my case, I prefer to do it in the middle seam because you can go a bit lower in order to to hug the hips better. I use darts when the hip:waist ratio is high and it works wonders because the fabric is more distributed across the back and not just the centre. However, everything you said it true. At some point in the future, we will upload a tutorial on how to take in the waist using darts so that the alteration can be a lot more accessible to everyone! :)

    • @catscompany735

      Downtown Cobbler I’m going to give your method a try! If it can make the hips shape better...that’s great! I have to adjust the hips in my jeans or any trousers for that matter & I’m always looking for ways of a more flattering look! I can not wear women’s trousers or if I do I have to take in the hips from the knees up! I usually buy my jeans in the junior girls department so I don’t have as much work to do on them! As of right now, I have 4 pairs of jeans waiting to be altered & I’m going to give your method a try! Thank you again for the information! You have been very kind with your sharing! Happy Sewing!

      You mean putting "gusset on the crotch? I do that for the police pants to highten the waistlines. For myself I add a piece of material 2 or 1 1/2 inches on the waist line then put back the waist band. I never did it yet to a customer's. I don't cut a hole on the crotch I rip it nicely. There are some good seam ripper that you can but it at Fabric Store.

    What a great gift to have especially for those who’s legs are on the short side. Even if stores would do unfinished hems that you could take up yourself or better still stores offer this to their customers for a small fee. I’m sure John Lewis, M&S and Next etc. could offer this service.

    Nice video. I can tell by your shop you are a professional. I always tell people I can tell a pro and his level of work by walking into the shop. And tell tale is you sewing seams with out marking lines. Your eye is right on and know what 1/2 in is. :)
    Being a professional craftsman myself of 50 yrs. and seeing many other shops in my line I feel proud I'm above so many of them. I use a Juki LU-1510N 7 myself. Leather canvas and upholstery work.

    I'm glad I came here to watch you do a denim waist! I remember going to an interview where I did this same method, but the jerk hiring was faking his critique on the way I was "not correctly" sewing the denim hem 🙄
    also, (anyone can answer this) How long does it take for you to hem and take in the waist time total?

      Thank you! Depends on the tailor's experience but it can take between 20 minutes to 1 hour. On average, it can be done in 40 minutes.

      Downtown Cobbler It really doesn’t take long if you’ve done it before! It’s taking out the stitches to do it, is what takes up your time! They don’t always “zip” out like in the video! You have to pick the right thread that’s going in the right direction! Happy Sewing!

      Glad this was helpful! The price would depend but generally we charge around $26 Canadian dollars for this alteration. It is definitely a project but we are actually uploading a super detailed tutorial on this right now so come back to watch it in a couple of hours. Cheers!
