Crazy that a tech demo that came with the PS4 became a big platformer series. The fact that one minigame in The Playroom VR turned to a huge series is insane.
I think Astro bot can get away with reusing a lot of assets and being so similar to past entries just because of how niche they used to be and most people have not played the vr games. For me a lot of the stuff in the new game was brand new to me I didn’t realize it was already established in the Astro bot series.
Well but its a let down for the people who did which are usually sony biggest fans. Paying 70$ to basically the same game but worse (with no vr) feels meh. Personally ill wait for the pc port and modders adding vr to it. By that time it should already have a decent discount
I didnt even know astro bot had predecessors till I best astros playroom lol. But now that the games are extremely popular they should definitely do that for future gamss
@@coolertuep Nah, man, I see where you're coming from, but I think you're underestimating how different the new Astro Bot game actually is from the VR version. Yes, some elements might feel familiar, but the way they're implemented and the overall experience is totally different. The new game is built around traditional controls and a non-VR perspective, which allows for a whole new level of creativity in level design and gameplay mechanics. The lack of VR doesn't make it worse; it's just different-and in a way that stands on its own. Plus, the polish and charm of Astro Bot shine through no matter the format. Waiting for a PC port might mean you miss out on the fresh experience the game offers now. I just got it, and man, is it stunning. "Perfect platformer?" Maybe not, but it's damn close.
@@coolertuep Reusing assets does not mean "basically the same game" i honestly doubt you played either since the cost is 60$ not 70$ yes the movements and mechanics are similar but there are many levels and gimmicks that were not in the previous games and if they did there is a different spin on it that makes it more unique.
I think the reason that they take the safe route when it comes to creativity is because they were trying to see if there was a market for full astro bot games. Also, Astro Bot isn’t a super known character, so it wouldn’t make sense to change something in the first game. It’s like giving Mario Cappy in Super Mario Bros, it doesn’t make sense. Great video!
Astros playroom really opened my eyes to how special Astro bot could be. That pre loaded little game/demo is still one of best experiences I've had with my ps5 and it left me wanting more. I wasnt the only one who felt that way as sony message boards were flooded with people telling them how much they loved playroom. I am so glad Sony listened and gave Team Asobi the go ahead to finally go wild and flesh out an entire Astro-Universe because the game is absolutely brilliant. Edit....Lets not forget about beloved Sackboy....I also loved his platformer. Imagine a team up! Oh and they show all the names to the Astrobot world baddies during the end credits.
"The enemies are not as recognizable as Mario's." To be fair, Mario has had a lot of years to let it sink in, and when most of us have played Mario, we were kids. Of course we are gonna remember Mario, especially since he had a giant impact on a lot of our lives. Sometimes I wonder if it's even fair to compare Astro and Mario, but with the rating score being so high for Astro and the game being a fun platformer, I can at least see why people compare the two. By the way, if you're ever curious on those names for the enemies, they're in the credits.
They should really just port the original to ps5 / psvr2 at this point, the game still holds up super well and with increased resolution/shadow quality it would look great in vr.
We NEED more games that capture the amazing feeling that old classic games used to give us, while being innovative and fun! I'm glad Astrobot tried that for the most part.
back in the olden days when i was little, i never played games, so when my teenage cousin was playing the rescue mission one, and i shyly asked if i could try because i thought Astro was just the cutest little guy, and i put on the headset (probably the first time i had put a vr set on) and was immediately super scared by that goofy alien guy and wanted to take it off again. XD good times. (btw i don't have a ps5, but iv genuinely had to remind myself a couple times i shouldn't get one just to play the new game, because i STILL think Astro is just the cutest little guy, and it looks super well done :) )
Got halfway through Astro Bot before going to Astro’s Playroom and 100%ing that including trophies. Proceeded to do the same for Astro Bot. I think I’m in love with this series now. Hoping for so much more.
I grabbed a cheap used copy of Rescue Mission over the weekend and I've been loving it. It makes such good use of the VR headset, and it's so charming. The PSVR1 is definitely still worth getting, especially because it's so cheap these days.
I always thought it was weird that they didn't do more with Astro after playing the VR game a long time ago. It had so much promise and it's nice to see them realize that.
One mention that I should make about Astro Bot that wasn't mentioned (but was for the others) is the soundtrack. While there were some reused songs, the new ones go unfathomably hard
Thank you for this retrospective, i wish the early stuff wasnt vr related....anyway where did you get that cool astrobot toy in the background on the top shelf please?
I know that the plush can be bought on the Fangamer online store, depending on which one you go to (The us one or EU one), you might have to wait for a restock
Yeah, I do think that a future Astro Bot game could do with some better enemy design. Or at least expanding upon the enemies we have already, like giving each their own quirks and personalities that make them stand out. Bosses should too be given a bit more personality or be based off of big bads from PlayStation games. Astro should also be given his own iconic nemesis. Like have that nemesis build a team of PlayStation villains (or Bot versions of them), like Zeus, Nefarious, Dr Cortex, Gehrman, etc. And then base the regular enemies off of their respective subordinates. I don't know. Just a thought.
Ironically, I went from playing Astro Bot to Astro's Playroom because I noticed the "4 player/guest" free update and I wanted to quickly do that before shelving Astro Bot. And there is one change to Asto Bot's playstyle from Playroom to Astro Bot! And it's the charge up time for his spin punch 😅 Also, at the end credits in Astro Bot, they do list the names of the enemies

So I think you're criticism of the PS5 Astro Bot very much boil down to having played all the games in quick succession. I think for the vast majority of the audience Astro Bot will be the first interaction people have with him and that type of game, if not just a weird recollection of the character and style from demos they would have played for a bit. I haven't played Astro Bot PS5, but I can see bosses that were reused from the VR game, and I feel the only way they could justify that is so few people played Rescue Mission, that for the relevant portion of the customer base they were essentially new characters, and I don't imagine people who are introduced to Astro Bot on PS5 will buy a PSVR if they already have a PS4, or buy a PSV4 and PSVR for the sake of playing Rescue Mission. For all intents and purposes, Astro Bot PS5 is "the only" Astro Bot game, so everything in it is essentially "new".
