I Avoided These Cars.... Until Now.. The Unpredictable Subaru Wrx STI

- In Today's video I accept the huge risk of buying a car I have always avoided, a 2011 Subaru Wrx Sti Wagon! I have been a bit of an Evo, Honda, Toyota ( JZ ) guy my whole life. I have always seen these cars listed with erratic issues like blown engines, blown head gaskets, rod knock, and "fresh engines" on cars that had low miles. Well, I think the time has come to finally jump head first into one of these and see what they are all about? What could it hurt right?
Alternate titles
I Accepted A HUGE Risk Buying This Car.... 2011 Subaru Sti WAGON! - Авто/Мото
As a Subaru owner, I think a majority of "failures" come from lack of maintenance, turning the boost up way to high and no windage tray in the oil pan.
I agree, these cars are sensitive enough to break themselves with poor decisions
Same thing with dsm's, guys would throw a few k in bolt-on on without doing maintenance go make 500awhp and wonder why it breaks a month later.
@@robbalinski1606 that’s for sure, I always felt the same way
Agreed but don't forget about ol stock pickup tube definitely change it out / cylinder 4 cooling mod ,and a baffleed air oil separateor are best Lil upgrades too due for security especially if it gonna be going for more power down the rd and of course a nice set of arp 625+ headstuds and she will be good too you
I have several myself and have had several from fun too rowdy power levels maintenance is key always run high octane fuel / spark plugs regularly/oil changes early/transmission and diff fluids changed every couple oil changes / always allow it too get up too temp b4 driving/reving ext..
Dude $6500 is a crazy price. The drivetrain alone is worth that much
Im stoked!
seriously. i would have bought it, slept on the couch a couple months and done the couples therapy just for that deal
@@GregsTurtleHavenyou could sleep in the back of the hatch! Way cooler than the couch.
@@mindlessftw 🤯Sold!
i got mine for 2500 with the tech package .
Welcome to the Subaru world 🌎
You got that thing for a steal
Hi Tanner 👋🏽
Let me tune it and we can party 🥳
hey bader- u tune anything else but subis? p1/p2 volvo owners are literally desperate rn....
Do it Josh! This will have this man hooked for life!
10:49 Charles "So we got traction control turned off."
Eric in the back *Frantically looks for seatbelt.*
26:36 LOL it was another old Subaru like early 00s Outback.
Just love the buddy just smiling all the way at the back
useful sti tips:
1) no boost until oil temps hit 180F
2) no pulls with high intake temps
3) no lugging engine, for me, I just downshift if I’m below 2500 rpm and need to accelerate
4) no launches (I know it’s tempting, just don’t)
5) if tuned, don’t stare at the gauges on the AP, do some data logging at least once a month to make sure everything still looks good at WOT.
6) warm up procedure is, turn car on and drive away. Just stay out of boost until oil temps are up.
Bro i launch my STi week they love it wrx on the other hand 😅
That’s just too many rules lol a car should be able to just hop in and not worry about things like that which is the reason I’d never buy one.
So basically don't have fun, got it
@@stephngibson5517this is why Subarus get a bad rep, because kids abuse the absolute shit out of them, sell them, they break, surprise Pikachu.
Have owned subarus for almost 10 years now, do this and you won't be disappointed or let down. Just gotta treat em right and they'll treat you right.
The color is plasma blue. I have one built block and never sell it. You gonna love it . Very Quick 👌
Same, IAG 2.5 Fbo. The blue is definitely dope
“I don’t think Subarus are that bad of a car I think they got cheap owners” ~Trevor facts I have had a handful and love the cars. Every car has its corks these just happen to need a little extra maintenance.
Facts. Honda engines can handle the abuse and lack of maintenance. Unfortunately Subarus can’t but they are great if you take care of them
motor iq does a great breakdown of the ej motor
This
Moto IQ is stuck in the past. I've talked to a ton of tuners that work on nothing but Subaru and explain how stuck in the past he is. I am also a shop owner and work on a lot of these cars. Some of the information is good but a lot of their information is very dated
@@TheJines123 if it works for them it works for them.
Your buddy in the back is full on subie fan boi during this ride
I’ve had my 04 wrx for 13 yrs. Started with 91k now it’s at 210k. I haven’t done a single thing to the motor, no rebuild or head gasket issues. I think people who have issues just don’t maintain it properly and are overly abusing it. Great pick it!
That model is the only subaru I was ever interested in getting solely because its a hatchback.....hatchbacks are where its at.
Trev you need to get a dsm, less expensive to fix if you wreck it. And your camera guys right once you get into a slide you hammer down and the front wheels will pull you where your aiming every time.
I cant wait to see what you do to this build!!!!
Bro I’m so excited about this! Can’t wait to see what kind of content you make with this. I love Subarus.
Needs a IAG AOS and IAG oil pickup and windage tray asap and it will run forever
Can I get a warranty with this statement? haha
killer b pick up, IAG is not a great pickup.
No haha but it's definitely a must in a Subaru
@@zacktrafton2749 pickup is definitely a need for a cat that is going around corners fast or being driven excessively hard. IAG pickup is not that great, my buddy had an outfront stage 4 block all done up and the IAG pickup couldn't take the gs going straight let alone around corners. The car ate 2 bearings because of it and the pickup was saturated in metal. Outfront stage 4 at bader built shop (friend of mine) has never had piling issues and after 20+ pulls on a stock engine with a killer b we lost a rod because they couldn't take the power. No metal from bearing material. If you know, they drive the shit out of his cars.
@@klx_gaming4962 killer b for sure, pickup baffled oil pan, header, aos all the things!
Finally I’ve been waiting for you to get an sti I have a 14 sti sedan and love it
My second car was a narrow body hatchback wrx and I absolutely loved it but most problems with them come from a lack of maintenance for sure. Would definitely own another one 🤷♂️
Dude. Your going to be hooked. I went out to look at one when I heard they discontinued the STI, test drove one as a why not and holy shit it hooked me.
About the power to wheels ratio off Subaru's site:
"Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD)
Available only on the WRX STI, this drivetrain is the most advanced and sophisticated of the four. With a 41/59 split, it leans more on a rear bias, which is ideal for a sport-focused drive feel. Utilizing a planetary mechanical limited slip differential as well as an electronic differential that the driver can lock up when needed. In the front, there is a helical limited slip differential while in the rear you have a Torsen limited slip differential, as opposed to the others offering Open limited slip differentials in front and rear. Along with Active Torque Vectoring, a system that helps with cornering by applying brakes to the inside wheel to really hug you into a turn."
Bro.... I'm an sti guy....hell yea!!! You're gonna have fun!! And it's gonna sound good 😊
Untapped content brother. You got this 👍
Love to see it. Bugeye wagon owner here 😊
stoked to see you build a sti - I have a 2017 wrx sti 124k miles og engine still running strong, just gotta keep up on maintenance, keep an eye on oil levels is the biggest thing tbh, these cars stock make oil disappear
Also $6500 is nuts, hell of a deal. nice buy
That was fun. I just recently purchased a 2015 WRX w a stage 1 Cobb set up, Cobb SF Intake, axle back exhaust, coil over springs.
Daily drive my 2010 Sti year round in the midwest. Proper care/Maintenance you're golden.
As a Subaru owner I’ve been watching this channel since he first built the s14. I’ve been waiting patiently for this day. 😂
You have a lot of fun. I've own 3 turbo subarus with moderate mods and currently drive a 2013 sti with 140k with a performance clutch, dp and intake. Ive never had any engine issues with any of them. Btw hold the traction control button to turn off tc. When the dash light turns orange it's all the way off. If it's green your just in track mode but still have some tc active
Love it, build something for rally/hillclimb. It's the best form of racing imo. You should probably start with something old and beat up already that you don't need to care about damaging panels etc though, you will push it to the limit easier.
I’d love the see an older Subaru hill climb/ rally cross or full rally car on this channel
You should go to wicked big meet in stafford springs, CT this june. It is a really fun subaru event.
You’re a natural Subaru guy Trevor. They have a fantastic reputation in New Zealand. Where our roads can be like your hill climb. I’ve had 2 Subaru wagons. Then upgraded to 2 Audis. the Audi Allroad 4.2 was a beast. Never had problems with the Subs. Never didn’t have problems with the Audis.
Excess smoke could be the turbo. I'd check that first. Otherwise yes it could be a valve stem issue. Only other option is basically a bad PCV issue, but I doubt it.
Definitely turbo
needs a good wash and better mount for the AP, I despise loose hanging wires...certainly a diamond in the rough, very nice. motor mounts, pitch stop and fresh diff/ transaxle fluid should do it nicely. Equal length exhaust header! the factory stovepipe manifold sucks for heating cylinder 4 excessively...Gotta recommend an IAG AOS and PLM ELH exaust. These 2 items paired will reduce and even out your exhaust gas temperatures and help control oil blow by. Blue Head gasket smoke...its what makes a subaru a subaru...6500 is good for an example needing the amount of cleaning and mechanical work as this one might need. All of the undercarriage rubber bushings and fluids will be clapped out i suspect...New synthetic fluids and urethane bushings would be good maintenance, thanks for the upload, suby broe
Subaru cheat codes:
Make sure car is properly warm before driving
3k oci with a facelift rx8 filter.
Get iag aos, and a baffled oilpan with a stronger pickup.
Look into turbo oil feed lines.
Make sure its protuned for any bolt ons minus catback.
Press the dccd down instead of up for more rear lock instead. Ripping ebrake unlocks the center diff while ebrake up.
Make sure all 4 tires same.
Fender and h braces are biggest changers.
This is applicable to basically all Stis and all ejs minus the ones without dccd.
Mad jelly on your pickup I got a 2012 grb in white last year for 24k with 74k miles.
They are great cars, Trev is going to have some fun in this series.
Yes subi gang can't wait to see what you do to it Trevvy
Do your research on oiling. Oil pick and baffle pan/windage tray goes a long ways with these cars. AOS (air oil separator) and then it's just finding the right tuner and you'll be good to go. Look forward to seeing your subi journey
2 things ive learned about Subarus, they're super simple to work on. And its easier to just pull the motor to do the clutch
Please by a rally car and go full wrc style would be so sick to watch can’t wait know really hope you get a rally car or build one
To my knowledge Subaru's normally run a more 30/70 split in their AWD. (30% front power - 70% Rear) This leads them to be able to be thrown in and slid around corners easier than if they were full 50/50.... But its just that you have to commit to the toss in and give it a lot of throttle to really drive through it. Your Essentially trying to turn in and power over and its just causing you to understeer.
Still!! I Absolutely love this!!~ Certainly hoping this is a car that stays around that we can build more over time. My only advice is keep it simple... Its easy to go wild but if ya keep this car as a simple build and not do to much to soon, you'll find yourself loving this and enjoying it for many years to come. Lot of Content and DRIVING Potential with this one!!~ :D Can't wait to see where it goes.
Subaru's and Boxer's are a lot like Rotaries and Mazda's.... the engines are great motors but its the small little things you have to know about. A lot of it comes from just general maintenance and knowing your motor. No different than any RB, JZ or LS. And a lot of the "Failures" and engine issues come from many with lack of awareness, lack of maintenance or just foolish people trying to push a standard part beyond its limits.
ive been waiting YEARS for this content
I picked up my STI late last year. After test driving one I had to have one, such a unique experience. Enjoy it!
I was always scared of suabrus too. I bought one 3 years ago and now I'm 3 subarus deep. A 2018 wrx 06 impreza and 00 forester. I absolutely love how fun they are just to play with.
Definitely a ripper in pretty damn good shape! Great candidate for a flip since you got it for so cheap. Could make an easy 5k on this car. Probably stem seals with the 150k miles.
I definitely enjoyed this content.
Thanks for watching!
Some big ol gravel tires would help, snows would probably help a bit more too. Not on the bigger gravel but the fine soft stuff would be nice to have some knobbier tires for.
Subarus are more rear wheel bias, the lock on the dccd locks front and rear. Lock is only really needed and used on ice/snow. Get an IAG AOS, killer b oil pickup, cylinder 4 cooling mod, and a good tune, those will help with reliability. Keep up on the maintenance also, the on cold startup could be from turbo also.
Moto iq did a video on how to build these engines, & keep them healthy. Definitely worth checking them out! They're OG's in the engine building space
Hi from the uk try removing your intercooler and give it a clean out and get a catch can set up may fix the smoking
Fukn killer. That's gonna make for some times man. Can't wait to see more with this car. Anything, fixing, sliding, modding, anything will be sick
yessssssssss finally a subie on the channel lets goo!!!!!!
Larger capacity oil pan and windage tray are a MUST !!
Next time you hitthe dirt roads try a little bit of left foot "trail braking" as you enter the corners
I have this colour but in the sedan. She hits in the sun, I do miss my hatch back, i had it in world rally blue.
Road shots remind me of sti 4 wheeler build from 15yrs ago. Sti quad
next giveaway? i hope so, I miss my ole hawkeye wrx wagon this would be a nice upgrade from there
Finally got Subaru content. Now maybe we can get a 12valve in the shop and get some higb horespower diesel content next 😂 wishful thinkibg from a 12 valve owner chasing issues round and round from previous owners
After buying a new/used car especially a Subaru, I would think checking the oil should’ve been first on the list. Followed by the tune
Definitely great cars. It’s just like any car. There’s ways to make reliable power. Smedia is an amazing Subaru content creator and his builds are spot on.
The smiles from the back seat are priceless 😂
I have a silver forester on white wheels. Makes roughly 420 whp. great car I believe you saw it at ppir.
I like charles giving driving advice like he can do it 😂😂
insane deal for $6500, the drivetrain by itself is worth more than half of you paid for the car. i got my silver 2011 sti hatch for $16.2k and it was stock at 110k miles but it did have extensive service records. excited to see where this one will take you but the value you got on this purchase is imaculate.
You can turbo your na engine with stock parts but you need a good tuner and it’s easier to just do an sti swap on a forester
As someone who’s owned these vehicles and won’t own anything else car wise. The problem is maintenance. Most people abuse the cars, throw parts that aren’t apart of their tune and it blows up. If I were you, just to be on the safe side, find what parts were added and find a proper tuner to make sure everything is done properly.
Also never launch the car or try to break loose with traction control on, it will destroy your motor trying to cut power like that. Also the suspension if it’s stock, is not made for that kind of driving. Some people have new suspension on those cars go out in less than a few hours of rallying around. Just some things to be aware of :D enjoy!
And also, lastly. Subaru wrx and sti are reliable. The misconception comes from people who know nothing of these cars and blew up the car being idiots as stated above. Think of these cars like a needy girlfriend. She only wants specific things, she has an order to which she needs to be taken care of, and she doesn’t like changes. If you make changes you take her to her therapist (tuner) and have them fix her. Lmao
Check the intercooler if oil is pooling in it, either oil is getting into the intake or bad valve stem seals.. needs a IAG air oil seperator
6500 is wild man. nice find. this would fetch 15k in California. im very jealous lol
all cars have issues! get on the STI train my boy it is a wild ride 😎
Bring it on!
need to make some ken block style vids bro
Plasma blue is the rarest hatch cover too on top of all the goodies you got for cheap
I've always wanted one of these! But I am still more of an Evo fan. I need an EVO wagon!
Did you guys have it in sport sharp? Before you compared it to and Evo...
Had the same year 2011 wrx and was a great car. 40k miles on it never had an issue standard oil changes and all. keep them stock and be nice
lol I felt the same way with Subaru STI’s. I finally got myself into a 2018 Subaru WRX, kinda saw why people are into Subaru’s so much. Drove the piss out of that little FA20 at 380whp/380wtq. Traded the WRX in for a STi Type RA.
I had a 2015 Subaru forester XT and I put 169600 miles and stock engine. Did oil service at 4500 mile ( recommended at 7500m) and no problems
Finally joining the STI family. If it's one thing about these cars, the community is like none other
I chose the hatch version as well, love having a lift gate instead of a trunk! You could probably run some more boost if you lower the timing in those higher load tables. Otherwise you'll want to change some parts for more airflow before you waste timing tuning. Edit: Smokes coolant like a train... "Is this what makes a subaru a subaru?" LOL yes sir.... mmm not exactly, but they also smoke on startup if you overfill the oil capacity.
I'm a big wagon guy!
I just jumped into 2019 STI and i must say its the most fun i ever had, only thing i had to do was oil changes and i do those every 2500miles, zero issues of any kind, i personally think its people not maintaining them the right way and modifying them without a proper tune, i see a ton of stupid questions on fb, who knows how many stupid things people do behind the scenes with these
I had a 2004 sti with 220k miles and it was funny because i kept up with with my maintenance and it never blew up, it was a stage 2 and as far as im concerned my engine was original, everything else crapped up it radiator, engine mounts, i/c piping one calipper seized and other staff, minus my trans. I sold it and the new owner said that the car was still solid after that. I never heard from him or the car ever again.
13:26 Charles needs to look up smeedia, he will fix all of your Subaru despair. He is also way out west but further west than Colorado, I believe he is in Washington state. It would be soooo sick to see any kind of collab between y’all’s channels.
I had one of these exact year, hatch, and color a few years back. I miss the exhaust note the most.
IM having a lot of fun with it so far
7:47 the guy at the back man.. hyahahjahha literally me in my subie haha
I personally love Subarus, but maybe it's because I've never owned one. Unfortunately, most of them in indiana are rot boxes. But i love the factory hood scoop on that thing.
Mannn what a steal that’s such a rare colour!
Trevvys customs should put a tribeca 3.6 in the ole sti and make 400 with the correct sized turbski. You were talking about max reliability at @13:20 and i think the 3.6 or the 3.0 would be a good fit for a perfect winter colorado car.
To get the most out of the DCCD for dirt road use, you want front bias on the torque split to pull you through the corners. Rally cars also use really light to no sway bars for the wheels to move independently of each other.

@motionautotv
And leave it be people who have never own a Subaru say it's not reliable 😂 my 18 STI is currently at 415 whp and as my daily driver I would say in that range is the best of both worlds. Beats most cars on the road but is reliable. I've put over 70k miles on it with this engine set up and zero issues. Only some what issue I plan to replace the clutch by choice
Your turning off the traction control right when ur try too slide it around?
Get a built motor from IAG and turn it up to about 450. It'll live happily for quite a while as long as you keep it maintained.
So my 05 subaru legacy gt wagon that out front motors bored my ej255 to 100mm piston. Makes 500hp and has been for 70,,k miles and still runs and rive amazing but I have 80% of all receipt of work and proper done and street tuned. It depends on if you build cheap or build to last
killer B motorsport makes awesome oil pickups, baffles and oil pans as well as headers, AOS
That would be sick turboing Eric's car. He couldn't stop smiling the whole time 🤜👌👍
As a Oklahoman I’m pround of the new owner but 6500 … I’m envy you rn😂 at least there is no rust
Big YES to subaru content!
14:57 with the turbo your forester you need to check out BBR racing, he has pushed stock Subarus past anything you can imagine.
Love that color
I’m looking for a 1 owner lower mileage 2005 sti right now because most of the problems come from 7 previous owners being kids and not doing maintenance and beating the shit out of them every chance they get. Putting on eBay parts with no tune and then using an off the shelf Cobb tune lol. My neighbors had every Sti since 04 and he’s dailied them and tracked them all with ZERO PROBLEMS because he bought them new and took care of them. You should always get a killer b oil pick up and pan to mitigate oil issues, cylinder 4 cooling mod, and AOS right away. And then always get your shit tuned with mods. You should save up and buy a bunch of mods and put them on all together so you only need to get it tuned 1 time. And oil every 3k.
Hi Trevor, you should build a rally car on the channel
The thing a subi needs is a basic iag kit. 8-30k worth of parts depending on if you do the work or pay labor.
Id do all the work ourselves other then putting together the engine
Some help with the accesport numbers
AFR sens ratio 1: should be at 14-15 when idling. Should be at 11.03 at WOT threw the whole power band.
DAM: should be at 1 never should
Go down
Then I would do cylinder 1-4 roughness: ideally as low as possible and as little as possible ideally at 0
Fine knock learn under wot should never see more than a 2.0 and the 2.0 should not be constant throughout the entire pull. Cruising its normal to see 4.0-6.0
