Perry White's reply to Jimmy Olsen during the tv series the Adventures of Superman starring George Reeves. John Hamilton as Perry White, Jack Larson as Jimmy Olsen
John Hamilton (1887-1958) had more than 300 screen credits but will always be best remembered for his last role: as Daily Planet editor Perry White. Jackie Cooper tried to fill his shoes on the big screen, but just could pack into the role the same delightful bluster as John Hamilton.
the writers of superman might have watched the adventures of superman and this phrase got their eyes and decided to put don't call me chief in the superman comics
0:14 Five Minutes of Doom 0:20 Jet Ace 0:31 Jimmy Olsen, Boy Editor 0:41 Perry White's Scoop 0:49 Superman Week 0:55 Great Ceaser's Ghost 1:58 Test of a Warrior
This is hilarious. John Hamilton added a certain amount of comedy to the adventures of Superman. They were all great actors. I’m glad I grew up during the 50s I was able to watch these as they came on TV weekly.
My best friend and I watched reruns of Superman on Nick At Nite back in the early 1990s. Boy did we crack up! Jimmy Olsen got kidnapped way too many times than Lois Lane ever did!
I think Perry White is also cranky because he only has 3 employees to run a world class newspaper. One, Clark, is also disappointing, another, Jimmy, is also calling him Chief despite being told not too all the time. The last, Lois, is always getting in some kind of trouble to get the story. No one left to write the stories.
he shared the same last name of another actor who played a DC Comics Character, Neil Hamilton, who played Commissioner Gordon on the Batman TV series of the 1960s
Only once did Perry White allow Jimmy Olsen to call him chief after getting a Native American headdress because he's one of Superman's friends, who helped some Indians.
Back in the 1950s younger people were expected to have a little extra respect for their elders, Jimmy calling Perry White 'Chief' would have been seen as being 'over famliar' due to the fact that he would have been under the age to see White, not quite as an equal you understand (Perry was the boss after all) but as a peer (of sorts) who would have allowed Clark and Lois (in their cases regarding the fact that they were the Daily Planet's top reporters would have help them gain favor from their employer) to call him 'Chief'. Jimmy would have had to wait a few years (and maybe get a few scoops, if he could at all) before Mr White would have allowed him to call him 'Chief' by then the 1960s would have begun to swing thus he would have covered stories of that era, or he may have joined the hippy movement by then, or maybe he would have gone to Gotham where he could have covered the explots of a certain Dynamic Duo, of which I've always considered both shows (along with the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman series) to be set in the same universe, LONG before DC did the 'Batman 66'' crossover miniseries (the cast of the 1950s show even make a camio in the last issue of the regular series). You may be thinking that I'm some kind of older person who remembers the 'good old days' of the 1950s (although I do have a fondness of some of the ethos of that and other past eras) but in fact I'm only 33! Yet I do have a great interst in older media, mostly comedy, SF, horror, fanstay and superheroes, in print, TV, film, radio or indeed most every medim , plus I've watched a fair few old drama films in my time and thus I pick up things like that.
RIP to the cast of Superman. A fantastic group of actors. Thank You for the memories. I’m 62 years old, and still enjoy watching this show
What a crack up! Shared it with a student who started calling me "Chief"
R.I.P. George Reeves, Noel Neill, Jack Larson, John Hamilton, Robert Shayne
And Phyllis Coates.
Fantastic! Loved every minute of this. The longer it went the longer I'd laugh. Brings back fond childhood memories.
I remember a dream sequence where the ghost of Julius Caesar was ripping on Perry White for saying "Great Caesar's Ghost" all the time.
GREAT CAESARS GHOST
Rest In Peace. Jack Larson 2/8/28-9/20/15
ditto
he will always be jimmy olson
Never gets old.
RIP Jack you were a big part of my childhood
I lost it at "No, sir, my name's Jimmy Olsen, Chief!" He's so earnest.

Love this!
Rip Jack Larson 1928-2015
This is great
I seem to remember at least once where Kent called him Chief and Perry yelled at him also.
Thanks for the big smile today!
Great compilation! Nice work.
Absolutely great video! Thanks!
I promises never to call you chief again. Good you're re-hired. Oh Thank you Cheif . What did you call me! LOL
LOL!!!!! Yeah. But it's "chief" not "cheif".
Jack Larson may Rest In Peace.
So thats where letterman got the idea for that bit.
My best friend and I watched reruns of Superman on Nick At Nite back in the early 1990s. Boy did we crack up! Jimmy Olsen got kidnapped way too many times than Lois Lane ever did!
great jingle bells
Hey, AP! I really like the way you put this together! Thanks so much!
Rest in Peace Jack Larson.

Two or three decades later, Jackie Cooper plays Mr. White.
it didn't bother perry white when Lois and Clark called him chief but it bothered him when Jimmy called chief
jimmy was whites whipping boy
Payback for Olsen when he yells, "Don't call me Chief!" at Perry White
Why is it that Clark and Lois always call him chief, but he only gets upset when Jimmy calls him chief (lol)?
he shared the same last name of another actor who played a DC Comics Character, Neil Hamilton, who played Commissioner Gordon on the Batman TV series of the 1960s
Perry White didn't like to be called chief LOL.
And don’t call me chief!
Surely you must be joking. No, and don't call me Shirley.
That first clip, Jimmy did knock!
He did knock, but it is still impolite to enter without being given permission. After all, Perry could have been walking around in his underwear!
I'm only 36 but I love the tv series too :)
Only 19 and it's my favorite
I'm only 32, and I enjoy it too...
Great video.
Anybody know the name of the actor leaning against the wall at timestamp 1:47?
Only once did Perry White allow Jimmy Olsen to call him chief after getting a Native American headdress because he's one of Superman's friends, who helped some Indians.
"Great Caesar's Ghost"
Perry White gets so upset when Jimmy calls him CHIEF, but never reacts when Lois or Clark call him CHIEF! WHY?
If I get paid $1,000 he called him chief I be more than a millionaire. LOL!!!
An editor says, "Just as good" instead of "just as well"? How many reporters work for this big city newspaper? Is it more than three?
@chardtomp , I think it's supposed to be Editor-in-chief.
Great Ceasar's Ghost!
😊😊😊
He always treated Olsen like crap
So why did Clark and Lois get to call him "chief", but Jimmy didn't?

I dunno Boss
Because he was Perry White's so-called "whipping boy." LOL
What is this from
But isn't his title Editor and Chief.
hahahahha
