Fellow Canadian here, and what I believe that he actually said was, “What’s with that, eh?” then turned the “eh” into an “anyway” at the last minute, because he remembered that he’s in New York and doesn’t want to be a stereotype.
He didn’t apologize though…

I had my students do this at school a few times, going around the building into random classrooms and disrupting other teacher's lessons. It was fun as hell but, nobody ever won.

That would obviously be something that would work on social media today. David Letterman has always been way ahead of his time.
For my money, there has been no late night show like Letterman. If you look at what is done by today's late night shows, they're mostly patterned after Dave's in-the-street gags and pranks. Innovative and hilarious, and a bonus is that the majority of time he kept the politics out of it. He was the best!
Plus, he is the only Late Night host in history who would not eat tuna from a can.
yes... and my dad would disagree, but I think he's better than the great Johnny Carson. There was a weirdness to Letterman, where you had to think to yourself, "wtf, this is on television??"

One of my favorite bits.
This was clearly a collab with Paul as Canada has so many indigenous folks. I don't think a lot of people understood the joke at the time. Vintage Dave.

There are at least 3 that aren’t here. Probably more.
Monty was one of the many nicknames for Dave's "Special Intern Friend" so I'm guessing that won't make an appearance anymore

Why would people say Dave was talking too much? He has to talk to them a lot so that he can call them Chief/Debbie a lot, thereby prompting them to ask him to stop. It's the whole premise of the bit. But anyway, I'd never seen this bit before. The first two, when he was calling them Chief, were hilarious. The third guy was completely thrown off being called "Debbie", understandably. Also, that first guy was a spiritual advisor? I wasn't expecting him to say that. I should give him a call. "Hey, Chief, I need some spiritual advice. My soul needs a guiding hand, Chief."
With the second one here, Dave was talking so much we couldn't hear some of the replies from the "contestant". That's probably what Dave's staff was referring to, I would imagine.
