Samsung, if you read this... I just bought the Galaxy s8 Ultra and as an 15 year apple user i'm really loving the practicality, design and functionality of the Galaxy ultra (wish there were 16" tablet). Now DeX is what got me hooked because of the desktop like experience but the lack of support for real webapps and desktop apps is the limitation. The day DeX becomes the native OS supporting all the desktop Mac/Windows like apps, that will be my switch with no hesitation from Macbook and Desktop. Please make it happen!
Hi Thao - thanks for the follow up video! Just a few notes though: 1. The search function is new so far as the taskbar icon goes, but it has been there for a while via the keyboard shortcut Meta (WinKey) + F. This keyboard shortcut triggered the same search function on OneUI 4.1, the only new thing is the ability to access it from a taskbar icon. 2. Hiding the navigation keys on the taskbar is a nice addition, although OneUI 5 also removed the keyboard shortcut Meta + Tab to see recent apps, so as of writing the only way to access the recents menu in DeX is via the taskbar navigation keys. The Alt + Tab shortcut is still around, but it only shows *running* apps. There's a difference. 3. Right clicking the screenshot button in the taskbar has given you the option to take a partial screenshot for a while. It's worth mentioning the keyboard shortcut Shift + Meta + S allows you to take a selective (partial) screenshot as well, which is often more convenient than right clicking the taskbar icon (also something that's been around for a while and continues to work in OneUI 5). 4. Mentioning the resolution settings in Good Lock - MultiStar was a missed opportunity to also highlight the option to display more than 5 apps at once on an external display (assuming you're not using a DeX Station, DeX Pad, or Jumpgate dock, which enable this functionality without MultiStar). The previous video mentioned this 5 app limitation, but the solution is there in MultiStar. 5. The keyboard toolbar appears to be a Tab-specific feature at this point.

@@nimadge the toolbar isn't on my Fold and looking at comments from others it seems the toolbar is only on the Tab. I don't have a Tab so I can't speak to the specifics around the toolbar, unfortunately.
It would be a comprise though. My Surface Pro X is great but for laptop use the keyboard and design are a compromise. Same with the Tab S with Dex. Either use it as a tablet or get a laptop.
@@WarAlex16 I use the Brydge keyboard with my Surface Pro X because I prefer it turns it more into a laptop. But their keyboards simply aren't as good as first party keyboards.
I use Dex on my Galaxy S8 tab. It has a compact size. Previously, the system icons on the taskbar were too many, causing the application icons in use to display very limited. One Ui 5 has a small change that makes me happy, that is, it allows to hide some system icons on the Taskbar. I hope in One UI 6, the application icons on the taskbar can be customized to smaller og bigger There is one more thing with the taskbar that needs to be improved, which is the row of app icons that should be centered even though many apps are open
@@rudmer5973 no, my guess is they would have to upgrade the chipset, in order to cope with the more graphic demand. Maybe we would see it on second or 3rd generation 8 processor!
@@dcgo44r isn't needed, the current generation has already support for 4K resolution. So it should be possible to support 2x1080P. But it seems that the chipset doesn't support MST(can't find anything about it) or that the software is just not compatible with multiscreen support.
Great to see the follow up video. Hope you're enjoying the extra sharpness and screen real estate with 4K. Lets hope Samsung irons out the scaling issues soon.
Thank you sooo much for this info! I thought I'll never see the day that a regular S20 will output 4k in a external display. By the way, I find something interesting about connecting the phone through a Dock (HP G5): - As you said, it's cap de refresh rate to 30 hz, while connecting a display using HDMI. (It keeps the same refresh rate with lower resolutions too for some reason). If I need 60 hz, I have to disable the option in Multistar -I also tested connecting to another display I have trough the same dock. It has a resolution of 3440x1440p (ultra wide) but this monitor is using DisplayPort. And in this case, it has 60 hz, and the aspect ration is also supported. - For good measure, I also tested the HDMI with the ultra wide, an apparently it reach 60 hz. So maybe HDMI has some issue with bandwith? but not the connector, the cable itself... The 4k display I used if one of those portable ones, so instead of the regular HDMI, it has Mini HDMI. It also has usb-C, but with those works good. Overall it's a welcome upgrade. Edit: I discovered something new using the phone through a dock with HDMI (It might apply to a usb hub with HDMI too) Not only the frame rate will be limited, but also the color depth, I noticed a lot o Color Banding in general
I've tested and can confirm 4K 60Hz is possible on Dex. It's DP1.2 though and USB performance will be limited due to need to use all 4 lanes of USB C DP alt mode. Tested Galaxy Tab S7 with Dockcase 8 in 1 USB C dock.
I travel with my S Tab Ultra for hand written notes & media consumption. The keyboard cover is okay but I tend to just throw a logitech bluettoth keyboard & mouse in my bag. I use that same keyobard & mouse with a USB-C to HMDI to turn my TV in the hotel room into a huge screen work station & I still have my tablet for note taking. I haven't touched a laptop for travel in over a year. For anything that requires serious computing power. I have a dual monitor desktop set up at my yoga studio. I don't understand for the life of me how Dex isn't more popular for both personal & business use.
A known issue with Dex since One Ui 5: If you use a wired Dex-Connection, Samsung Internet and Samsung Gallery stop working correctly when you change the window size.
The partial screenshot thing is actually implemented in OneUI 4, and can also be triggered with the same shortcut key on Windows which is Meta/Win/Cmd + Shift + S. Works not only on DeX, but on the regular phone UI as well.
I have a Fold 3 and 4k at 60hz works if you use a dongle with max USB 2.0 ports and 480mbps Ethernet. The dongle I'm using is the Cable Matters 201248-GRY, but Cable Matters has dual outputs models 201055 & 201056 that also work. The limitation is in the phone output itself since they go to max 5Gbps, so if you use a dongle with USB 3.0 and up the phone allocates the majority of the bandwidth to the USB ports cutting the video refresh rate at 4k to 30hz max.
I also noticed that tiny calendar lol. Also, the USB 3 5Gbps port on the S8 Ultra is what limits the 4K option sadly. Samsung needs to update it to 40Gbps USB 4 or Thunderbolt 4 in the next model to stay competitive with the iPad Pro.
@@Max_Jacoby Ok, but unless it's 40Gbps it doesn't compete with the iPad Pro which has 40Gbps Thunderbolt 4. 20Gbps would be enough for 4K60 but 4K120 (which needs 40Gbps) is obviously preferred.
I use the Anker 551 with an Apple keyboard and Apple Magic Trackpad. This hardware setup with Dex (Galaxy Tab S 8 ultra) suits me very well and replaces a laptop or a PC.
I have never noticed any issues with 30 Hz refresh rate on my external monitor, and this is with a USB-C to USB-C video with power delivery connection from the monitor.
Here are some improvements I'd like to see in DEX: 1. Full Widget Support 2. Full Cursor Support on other browsers that aren't "Samsung Internet" (On other browsers, the mouse pointer behaves as a finger and not as a mouse). The mouse pointer should behave just like the Spen does on any app, not as a finger. 3. Automatically hide the top bar of any app that you make Fullscreen, the Minimize, Expand and Close Bar takes way too much space. 4. Use the chromebook's chrome browser with full extension support (before anyone says anything, no workaround works the same as a proper desktop browser. And no Mr. Smartass commenting on this regardless, saying "just use a laptop" doesn't make sense in this situation, I guess the point of dex is trying to minimize or eliminate all together the use of a laptop) 5. This is not a Dex only improvement but a an OS wide fix; "click and drag" is only possible by either physically clicking the touchpad or tapping and long pressing. Sometimes (like for resizing a pop-up window not in DEX) two finger swiping works just fine but it's very inconsistent. Other than that, Dex is very close to replacing my day to day laptop.
@@nickthaskater that part I totally get. That's why I said that it should behave like the Spen does. It doesn't make any sense to long click on a text to select it on a browser. With the Spen wherever there's text it can be selected. Samsung has the tools to do it.
@@kingrhoam93 I agree! Using the Spen on third party apps works much more like a mouse should work, than the cursor itself sometimes. It definetly seems like something they have the capacity to implement in some level without individual developer attention for each different app.
im not sure if its just me but i want the option to pin the notification bar so i can always see it instead of clicking the notif icon. i want the notif like in the phone that you can see atleast the icon of the app so at a glance you can see if there is a notif that requires your immediate attention
My first time using dex was when I had to carry my computer in for repair. Thats when I realised how good and capable dex is and it made life so much better. Now I intermittently use it as computer for the TV, with wireless keyboard and mouse of course
One UI 5.0 totally broke the typing experience in web browsers for me. The cursor keeps moving behind typed characters. It seems to be a Samsung Keyboard issue. I can fix it by switching to GBoard, but you can’t use GBoard on DeX Mode.
DeX forcing the Samsung Keyboard software as default its what irritates me the most on it. Huge part of the reason why I never use it, even though I really like it
uhd (4k) worked on my note 8 several years ago. maybe on newer versions of dex on newer versions of android they deprecated it because it was very picky about the dongle/dock that people were using (years ago it was). i'd imagine some people tried it then called or emailed samsung looking for support/claiming it wasn't working when it was their dongle being low spec. it's a bit like how you need a power delivery usb power adapter if you're using a usb dock/dongle -- both the usb dongle and the usb power brick have to support power delivery to get the specified say, 25+watt charging speed.
the usb-c on the tab s8 family is 3.2 gen 1, which means it only supports a maximum speed of 4k at 30hz / 1440 at 60hz / 1080 at 120hz, so the 4k 60 comment on the video is also wrong, it's 4k 30, not 60. Good option of course, but i'm still waiting for higher speed connectors on these devices.
Am I missing something? Because I don't get it, why do you want to mirror your phone to a tablet, why not just use your tablet, when I bet it's as or more powerful?
Hey great video as always just wanted to add that if you use Microsoft Swiftkey keyboard you can actually get predictive text while using a physical keyboard, ive been using it for years and i prefer it over the stock samsung/android keyboard.
The thing that I did not like about this update is that the desktop background has become the same as the background of the normal tablet mode, I mean it is no longer individual or private like in the previous update, the Dex background was individual or private, and I can make the background of the tablet mode in another way, I mean not in one form like Update now ☹️💔💔
after update, i'm no longer able to export hdmi to 2 external projector at the same time anymore, and the resolution is very low at 800 x 600. I'm still able to connect the projector with a smartphone, so not the issue of hdmi cable or my hub. Something wrong with this update, I'm frustrating since this is very important function for my teaching class.
So scaling is global issue for Samsung Dex and Huawei Deaktop Mode. I had same feeling, these things are way too small to be read from a couch. I hope they improve it.
Hey there, Thao.... where exactly did you find that "show toolbar while typing?" I went to the (DeX) settings and can't seem to find it... but I'm pretty sure I have One UI 5.0 for Dex as everything else on the video seemed to have matched up.... anyways, fantastic video, as usual!
I want a iPhone “Switch” so bad. Actually considering a Samsung phone. The thing that bothers me the most is that this hasn’t happened yet for all phones and tablets. I don’t want to turn on my gaming PC to open a web browser or handle some files quickly.
Boa to get the 4k working you must understand that you have to launch dex on the monitor and not on the tablet (when already connected) - when you do launch it on the tablet - it mirrors and is lower res. if you are in one ui - connect it, go with the mouse (even it is mirrored) to the monitor and start dex on the monitor toogle list from above - dude that understanding was hard to come by....
Cheers. For noobs like myself, you have to install Good Lock as well as Multistar. The increase in resolution makes text nice and crisp on my uperfect 4k lapdock, though text is small as you say. Nice to have the option. Cheers.
Samsung really missed the mark by not making 4K resolution feature permanent on DeX without the need for Good Lock. Motorola has no problem giving it on Ready For.
Dex is cool, but I rarely use an external monitor with my S8+. Instead, I use the Win-X launcher. It makes my S8+ look like Windows 10 and makes me happy.
But theres one inconvenience i've noticed when i plug in a usb device, i just cant find the 3 dots at the upper right corner in the storage window where i could go to advance storage settings to properly unmount my usb device. i will have to use the phone to unmount it in the notification bar. I'm using an S21 ultra though.

Hi @Thao. How do you enable the blue light filter on a non-samsung monitor from the tablet. The eye comfort shield does not extend from the tablet to the monitor by default using Dex. Is there a way to do this? Also, for the audio, if you have a dock station attached to the tablet it seems to treat the dock as a speaker and I cannot play audio at all and there is no option to choose the audio output. Have you run into this and is there a solution? Thank you!

I wonder why Nova Launcher and other popular launchers don't have a "Desktop" mode like Samsung Dex as a premium feature. Because if you think about it, Samsung Dex is just a reshaped Sasmung Launcher made to look like Windows. It's just a change of format and looks. Only if Nova releases it for the other android masses.
I looked for "multiStar"to download it from the Galaxy store, like you said, but it's not there. So I downloaded good lock from the Galaxy store, then I looked for "multiStar" module to download it, but there is no module "multiStar". So where is multiStar? you haven't gotten the best setup yet without a wifi6 tv/monitor. currently only samsung premium 8k tv has wifi6. samsung dex via wifi6 is not laggy at all!

The UHD (4K) resolution has been available prior to OneUI 5 via GoodLock / FineLock and the MultiStar module.
DPI Scaling on Dex is still missing. It is a necessity for extremely near sighted users like myself.

8 294 400 * 32 = 265 420 800 bits per frame
265 420 800 * 60 = 15 925 248 000 bits per second ~ 16 Gbps
So theoretically USB 3.2 is enough with its 20 Gbps speed.

4K 60 is definitely possible with DeX. There are many folks over on the subreddit r/SamsungDeX running 4K60.

Mouse support is developer dependent. They have to code their apps to work with a mouse in whatever way. This is not something DeX alone can resolve.

There were no updates in February. Only restrictions. Try to go into DeX and switch on or off the do Not disturb...
I really hope samsung will add another snapping tool for app, not just app side by side, atleast add half column like on normal ui multi task option
I've had the tab s8 ultra for months, but i haven't even tried dex on it once 💀
My first time using dex was when I had to carry my computer in for repair. Thats when I realised how good and capable dex is and it made life so much better. Now I intermittently use it as computer for the TV, with wireless keyboard and mouse of course
One UI 5.0 totally broke the typing experience in web browsers for me. The cursor keeps moving behind typed characters. It seems to be a Samsung Keyboard issue. I can fix it by switching to GBoard, but you can’t use GBoard on DeX Mode.
DeX forcing the Samsung Keyboard software as default its what irritates me the most on it. Huge part of the reason why I never use it, even though I really like it
what i can't wait for is dual dex display, even if it's just 2 samsung tabs, or devices. it has to be possible without the strange vm ware ish option

uhd (4k) worked on my note 8 several years ago. maybe on newer versions of dex on newer versions of android they deprecated it because it was very picky about the dongle/dock that people were using (years ago it was). i'd imagine some people tried it then called or emailed samsung looking for support/claiming it wasn't working when it was their dongle being low spec. it's a bit like how you need a power delivery usb power adapter if you're using a usb dock/dongle -- both the usb dongle and the usb power brick have to support power delivery to get the specified say, 25+watt charging speed.

App and Windows scaling at High Resolutions is something no company gets rights. Its a problem on Windows, ChromeOS and I MacOS too.
the usb-c on the tab s8 family is 3.2 gen 1, which means it only supports a maximum speed of 4k at 30hz / 1440 at 60hz / 1080 at 120hz, so the 4k 60 comment on the video is also wrong, it's 4k 30, not 60.
Good option of course, but i'm still waiting for higher speed connectors on these devices.
Dex can flow the mouse cursor from monitor to the tablet, it's right in dex mode settings
Am I missing something? Because I don't get it, why do you want to mirror your phone to a tablet, why not just use your tablet, when I bet it's as or more powerful?

Hey great video as always just wanted to add that if you use Microsoft Swiftkey keyboard you can actually get predictive text while using a physical keyboard, ive been using it for years and i prefer it over the stock samsung/android keyboard.

You can use sw9liftkey with a physical keyboard, which would show you predictive text.

Did you know most streaming services block VPN providers? You can get any VPN and they will not work.
The 4K has been around for a while and is not restricted to One UI 5, just needs GoodLock
The thing that I did not like about this update is that the desktop background has become the same as the background of the normal tablet mode, I mean it is no longer individual or private like in the previous update, the Dex background was individual or private, and I can make the background of the tablet mode in another way, I mean not in one form like Update now ☹️💔💔

after update, i'm no longer able to export hdmi to 2 external projector at the same time anymore, and the resolution is very low at 800 x 600. I'm still able to connect the projector with a smartphone, so not the issue of hdmi cable or my hub. Something wrong with this update, I'm frustrating since this is very important function for my teaching class.
So scaling is global issue for Samsung Dex and Huawei Deaktop Mode. I had same feeling, these things are way too small to be read from a couch.
I hope they improve it.

I want a iPhone “Switch” so bad. Actually considering a Samsung phone. The thing that bothers me the most is that this hasn’t happened yet for all phones and tablets. I don’t want to turn on my gaming PC to open a web browser or handle some files quickly.
Its unfortunate now that I cannot use Dex wirelessly on my OLED LG GX TV. My previous Z fold 4 worked just fine.

Boa to get the 4k working you must understand that you have to launch dex on the monitor and not on the tablet (when already connected) - when you do launch it on the tablet - it mirrors and is lower res. if you are in one ui - connect it, go with the mouse (even it is mirrored) to the monitor and start dex on the monitor toogle list from above - dude that understanding was hard to come by....
Cheers. For noobs like myself, you have to install Good Lock as well as Multistar. The increase in resolution makes text nice and crisp on my uperfect 4k lapdock, though text is small as you say. Nice to have the option. Cheers.
Samsung really missed the mark by not making 4K resolution feature permanent on DeX without the need for Good Lock. Motorola has no problem giving it on Ready For.
Absolutely. Ready For can also display in portrait orientation for vertical monitors. DeX only does landscape orientation.
Scale issue on high res screen? Did they even test the feature before rolling out? Or they saw that but the incomplete feature can be rolled out?

I use Motorola Ready for. And the screenshot etc. features you mentioned are already there. Also, the taskbar of Ready For is much better.
Dex is cool, but I rarely use an external monitor with my S8+. Instead, I use the Win-X launcher. It makes my S8+ look like Windows 10 and makes me happy.

Dex is great, probably the best "make my phone a desktop PC" solutions out there.
But theres one inconvenience i've noticed when i plug in a usb device, i just cant find the 3 dots at the upper right corner in the storage window where i could go to advance storage settings to properly unmount my usb device. i will have to use the phone to unmount it in the notification bar. I'm using an S21 ultra though.

Hi @Thao. How do you enable the blue light filter on a non-samsung monitor from the tablet. The eye comfort shield does not extend from the tablet to the monitor by default using Dex. Is there a way to do this? Also, for the audio, if you have a dock station attached to the tablet it seems to treat the dock as a speaker and I cannot play audio at all and there is no option to choose the audio output. Have you run into this and is there a solution?

One UI 5 is not Also Known AS (AKA) android 13. One UI is samsung's own UI for their android devices.
I just had the S6 Lite 2022 delivered and found out that Multi Screen Dex isn't possible. Oh I am grumpy. grrrr.
I wonder why Nova Launcher and other popular launchers don't have a "Desktop" mode like Samsung Dex as a premium feature. Because if you think about it, Samsung Dex is just a reshaped Sasmung Launcher made to look like Windows. It's just a change of format and looks. Only if Nova releases it for the other android masses.

Android 13 solved my large pointer issue. Dex on Android 12 wouldn't allow me to reduce my mouse pointer to normal size.
Being able to edit,do my spreadsheets on a phone or tablet literally using 10-20watts is just amazing
I looked for "multiStar"to download it from the Galaxy store, like you said, but it's not there. So I downloaded good lock from the Galaxy store, then I looked for "multiStar" module to download it, but there is no module "multiStar". So where is multiStar? I need the 4K functionality (actually my monitor is a very nice Samsung 27-in curved display, but only 2.4). Thanks in advance for your help

you haven't gotten the best setup yet without a wifi6 tv/monitor. currently only samsung premium 8k tv has wifi6. samsung dex via wifi6 is not laggy at all!
