Love these old school projects. As a person who had an old Coleco. Electronic quarterback this brings back many memories!
Loved my Coleco!!
It’s nice that there’s now an FPGA option like this! I was lucky to find a pair of as-is/“junk” GBC & GBAs for around 300 yen each (with working motherboards but busted screens) & used the FunnyPlaying kits to bring them back to life. They make great stuff & I adore my single-purpose, backlit, portable handhelds that run on rechargeable AAs! 😊
I am really impressed with the quality of the Funnyplaying components.. I was always reluctant to gut my original as I didn't want to have something sub-par but this one is actually really good! It pairs up nicely with the no-cut GBA project I did a few years ago: ruclips.net/video/jRk7vOiC7Zo/видео.html
Nice! Now you have the whole range of Game Boy games covered! And I totally understand the hesitation to gut an original… Amazing how far the parts have come in the past few years, though. Sure beats the Afterburner mod I did to my GBA back in the day! 😂
Fantastic video! Just got my parts and assembled. Works like a new GBC with a few extra bells and whistles. Definitely gonna get more and give as Christmas gifts!
I think these sites need a "system builder" interface for ordering all the parts. It might make it more approachable for casual users.
If you are a casual user you'd just buy 1 of the hundreds of complete kits. Or even the pre-assembled kits. There are so many of these devices all over. They pretty much all come out of China. Most use the same chips, but different boards sometimes. There are extremely cheap units and then there are some rather expensive units. They aren't usually selling these cheap units on specialized sites for you to configure yourself, typically just on Ali Express and the like.
Great video Lon. Looks nice! I'll definitely add this to my collection in the future. keep up the quality videos
Doing my part to comment for engagement purposes, because I have no doubt the algorithm is going to bury this awesome video. Great video as always, Lon.
You are correct! Buried.. so frustrating as I know many subscribers like this kind of thing.
I love this project. Id like to see more of this stuff!
Unfortunately the algorithm buries me every time I do one of these.
You are the best, Lon!
Keep up the great work
Used this video to make mine! Thanks
I really want to build one of these.
I love an all white gamboy.
Love having a cheaper alternative to Analogue. They should really put all the components on one page to make it easier to buy the full kit.
I hope they make a GBA version of this. The regular first and then SP
Is the battery replaceable on the Analogue? Haven't seen any 3rd party batteries.
I have an OG, Color, Advance, SP, Super GB and a Retro flag GPI Case. The SP works surprisingly well given I never changed the original battery. I'd be using it still but my eyes suck and I needed the better display like in my Retroflag. I had the one that attached to the GameCube till I lent it to a friend. 😢
Do you have one of the backlit SP's? I've never seen one of them in person but hear great things about the display quality on those.
@@LonSeidman Yes but I would swear it used to look better then it does now. I think I'm just used to these modern displays and my eyes aren't as good as they used to be.
@@jmr Those old backlights do wear out over time - I think they used some type of fluorescent light source.
nice!
an ips sceeen makes these okd gameboy games easier to play compared to ghostly old displays!
I like the Epilogue GB Operator and Geek Tech Premium FRAM Cartridge for Digital Versions of games I buy from new developers. I was going to get this but I see a new OLED Kit and some New Capacitors over at Ali Express I may pick up for my old GBC.
firmware is up to 1.08. still watching the video, not sure if you end up mentioning it. there is also an alternative firmware that has the original GB/GBC boot logos.
Can you share a photo of what it looks like powered up, in a dark room? Something that bugs me with IPS screen kits and clear shells is the backlight bleed around the screen through the shell. Less of an issue when there's a lens on there but I've noticed it at the bottom on other screens
This is pretty cool though I think it is limited to only Gameboy and Gameboy Color games. What I'd really like to see a MiSTer type handheld that can compete with the Analogue Pocket.
There are some devices out there that compete with the Pocket for very cheap. Search RUclips and you'll find channels dedicated to this stuff.
Me and my big mouth. Now all the Oled kits are gone. I will probably be getting this now.
make sure to put makho's 1.06 fw with the nintendo/gb/gbc boot logo, much nicer than the ugly funnyplaying logo.
How do you know when the battery is going flat does it have a led that comes on or a warning to say it needs charging?
Wish this was compatible with the EZ-FLASH Junior.... Hopefully it gets a firmware update
Even more fun if this supported SD cards so you could carry more games than just the cartridges. Solid looking though and faithful to the OG.
You can always use a multi cart that uses an SD card. And put your favorite ROMs on it.
Cheaper than Analogue Pocket.
I might have to look into it for that reason
So is the R36S
@@X91X-km7hp R36S isn't FPGA. It's inferior emulation.
Why do you have 3 extra screws left over ?
I think the original gameboy motherboard needs a few more screws with the shell.
because he doesn't know what he's doing. He didn't screw the mainboard to the top case. If you look closely, you can even see in the video that the front shell has no screws in 3 places around the buttons.
He also started with the screen, which is the last part most other builders do.
They really should include some instructions on their website.
@@Omar_Little that's less of a problem. I also put the display into the housing first in order to be able to press the double-sided adhesive tape that holds the display in the housing from both sides.
One of the few things that prevents me from getting this, is that the processor clock speed is slightly faster than the original GBC.
There is a clock speed adjustment in the settings - I’ll have to look into this a bit more
@@LonSeidman There are a few videos showing this: the speed is just slightly faster so, unfortunately, it's not a 100% accurate clone, which is expected to be honest. I hope the clock speed can be adjusted more with firmware updates in the future.
Putting the screen in first prior to testing doesn't seem like the best idea, especially if you've been sent a dud.
They also warn you of doing that because if you assemble the kit and then discover that your screen is broken, you can't apply for the guarantee 😅 so you should always test your display before installation.
I got everything together.
Booted up. Speakers work. Screen lights up, but is black.
No graphics. I probably messed something up maybe on the ribbon cable for the lcd.
It's going straight into the trash, and I'm using the analogue pocket.
You probably did mess something up, especially considering you did not know what tri-wing screws were in the prior comment. You should definitely stick with a pre-built handheld.
I've been putting mine together.
They gave me 5 screws with a three prong head.
3 screws with a phillips head.
WTF is this. I can't get the casing to hold together all the way because they couldn't just send me 6 phillips heads.
It should be called gamegirl. Game boy was chunkier.
Why did they make this with only 2 face buttons and no triggers? Otherwise it could be a real analogue pocket competitor.
It's supposed to be a GBC
@@KidChameleon87 yeah but fpga has a ton of potential, it could run a lot of other consoles like the snes even.
@@ingusmant true but it’s ment to be a GBC clone
@@KidChameleon87 I mean it could run GameGear and NGP games I think, but thats it.
i just bought one of these kits in atomic purpleforsuper cheap! the only thing this kit would look good with is a sceen protector with all the original art work on whichwould look great if your not going to use the whole screen
