I remember seeing this movie on opening day back in 2017. Yes, the action was saved for the climax of the movie, but I enjoyed the drama and all of the character arcs and their scenes of them bonding. I felt that this was an underrated movie.
The 2017 rangers absolutely sucked!!!!!!! It was boring. I don't even remember shit happening. I wind up turning it off. I'm just waiting for shit to happen. WTF
Also! (Billy) from the original rangers is doing life! Him and his girlfriend pretended they wanted to buy a yacht. A wealthy couple took them on the water to show em what it could do. And they robbed them, and tied them to the anchors and dropped them in the ocean. (For drug money)
@@ovadoseooo947Billy? The blue ranger in so many seasons and iterations? Whose actor is David Yost, and proudly gay? Has been for decades, and never been to jail? That guy? 🙄🥱
@@ovadoseooo947you are full of bullshit, you want to know how your lying? Billy from the original show is gay, if you said him and his boyfriend had done those things, then maybe i would have believed you.
I’ll NEVER forgive our fandom, for completely dropping the ball on making this exceptional adaptation of the original material, that marked a GENERATION!!! I’ll NEVER forget how we allowed this to tank as hard as it did! It literally checked all the boxes for me & it had all the wind beneath its wings to fly well into a full blown Universe/Franchise with multiple movies/tv shows! The casting alone was so SPOT ON, that it makes me tear up to know that we won’t get more of these actors in those roles! Justice for 2017 POWER RANGERS!!!! P.s. phenomenal breakdown and analysis of this! Absolutely ADORE your channel!
I couldn’t have said it better myself! Like, this movie is so underrated it’s not even funny! I still cannot believe that it bombed at the box office. Like, how could this not be getting a sequel? It was the perfect way to reboot the franchise. ❤️
I honestly didn't like the movie. I don't hate it but I still don't like it. Some of it was the morphing. That just weirded me out. Some of it is Zordon himself. I found this Alpha 5 funny but would of love a little more homage to his original character. As well why change Goldar? He was literally one of my favorite supporting baddies because he was so dang funny as a child. Especially when Lord Zed came in. I also don't like how they changed some of the characters' back stories. I mean, Jason, for example, could still been in football but also should of shown his love for martial arts...or even younger pictures of him in it. For a fan from original to Tommy becoming the Black Ranger in Dino Thunder...it kinda felt like a slap in the face with changing of back stories. Race I could of cared less about. The back stories is what some of us was looking for. Like Kimberly's love for Gymnastics could of easily turned into cheerleading. Zach love for music could of been there, he didn't need to dance in the reboot. Stick to what fans know and then add on to make sense for the updated version. I'm glad you enjoyed it but some fans like me just couldn't bring ourselves to like it.
I disagree. Power Rangers 2017 was the film we DIDN'T deserve. DIDN'T deserve. Mostly because a vast majority of these so called "old school fans" didn't appreciate the film at all. If all you liked or enjoyed from The Power Rangers series were the action sequences, then you never truly were a fan of this series in the first place. Power Rangers was about the bond of friendship and the support of your peers when things got out of hand. It was about teamwork and overcoming problems a single person just couldn't overcome and the acceptance and satisfaction of being in a team. Being a part of something greater than your own existence. I, for one saw it in theaters three times. Bought the collector's edition Blu-ray and then a few months later when I upgraded my system to 4K I purchased the 4K disc set as well. I supported this film from the beginning. So let me make something clear here. Power Rangers 2017 was FAR BETTER than anything Power Ranger related that came prior to it. Yes, I grew up with the original series and with Power Rangers Zeo, and Turbo, I believe I stopped watching the series once Power Rangers Lost Galaxy concluded. I also went back to some of the modern takes from time to time like Power Rangers Samurai. And while all these shows were rather good in their own way (Especially the older ones) they never reached the level of emotion this film did. And this film accomplished this in a 2 hour window, not over a 20+ episode series where characters can be flushed out and developed further. So even if this film is a one and done, I appreciate it for what it accomplished. And that was to not only re-introduce the Power Rangers to a new era of fans, but represent them with far depth and grace than ever before. This film was terrific.
I loved this Movie I grew up off of Powers Rangers since day one, the Actors were incredible, I actually hoping for a Sequel with them mentioning Tommy in the end, that would have been a break thru movie with that story line from the original show💯🔥🤷♂️
I appreciate this essay as a love letter to the franchise. It was a big part of my childhood; and to this day I imagine myself morphing when I get dressed. I agree that Power Rangers in Space and Time Force were 2 of the best seasons. I felt ambivalent about the movie when it came out. It was not what I expected (half breakfast club/half super-hero origin) but still very good. I think I'll rewatch it with fresh perspective. Also, need to finish catching up on the seasons I missed. TY for this sir. "May the Power protect you." :)
I cannot comprehend how this wasn't a mega hit... multiple generations raised by the TV show and no one showed up to see it 😥 This had enough throwbacks with just enough wokeness (done right) to make it the perfect update, it had everything. My theater was packed on opening weekend, but I guess it was one of the few. The couple right next to me gasped with that Tommy and Kimberly cameo and I think a kid started crying when Billie died, it was a hell of a movie that deserves much more, because it gave everything
Forever and forever and forever bitter that we never got that trilogy. Literally everything I wanted 2015's Fantastic Four to be this movie was that in spades. Darker and more grounded atmosphere but also having the best chemistry I have ever seen with a cast in a power rangers movie and double down on how absolutely awesome this series is. Without a doubt the best power rangers movie ever
I'll be forever angry that this movie floped and didn't have a sequel, I just want my slightly problematic angsty gay teens back saving the world and I'll never have it 😭 I to this day survive out of fanfic when I miss them too much. It's a hate crime that they didn't make at least one more movie 😂😭
I'm not at all upset we didn't get the six sequels that was supposed to follow Power Rangers 2017 but I do wish they would have turned the movie into a Power Rangers reboot series.
never thought i’d see a jem and the holograms reference in a power ranger video that being said this movie is way better than people give it credit for
Just discovered this channel due to your Charmed review and am SO delighted to know you're also a Power Rangers fan. RPM is my favorite season. And this movie was, in fact, awesome!! I also like how it could be the reason representation is so great in the latest season: Dino Fury.
As someone who didn't grow up watching the original Power Rangers series, mainly due to it being before my time, this movie was an absolute blast for me. I think it's mostly carried by the performances, but I also just love this movie's interpretations of the Rangers themselves. They all feel fleshed out and having something distinctly memorable about them. So, you can imagine how upset I am that a sequel is probably never going to happen.
id kill for a version of the movie with the deleted scenes because those scenes add SO MUCH to the movie, might even edit the it myself who knows, but would prefer someone else more professional do it, drop a 10th anniversary directors cut or something idk
As an autistic person with a lot of difficulty making real connections with people, I actually loved what they did with Billy and his character as a whole. Maybe because I am white, I never felt the need for a hero who looked or sounded like me (I'm AFAB,) but having someone with similar challenges and ways of interacting with the world is awesome.
Before This Movie, I Once Believed That Power Rangers Was Just A Cheesy Little Show From The 90s (I Never Watched The Series And I Was In My Early Teens At The Time). This Movie Was What Got Me Into Power Rangers. Because I Haven't Been In Theaters For Three Years At The Time (And The Movie I Did See In Theaters That Year Was My Little Pony: The Movie), So I Waited For The DVD To Release (Which I Still Have To This Day). In The Meantime, I Saw The 1995 Movie And Thought It Was A Little Cheesy And Goofy (I Was 14, Okay?). Seeing This Movie (The 2017 Movie) Cemented Me Being A Power Rangers Fan. I Even Have Some Of The Toys From That Movie From Way Back When. After Hearing More About The Franchise Much More Beyond It's "Cheesy And Goofy" Surface, I'd Like To Look Into More Power Rangers Shows And Even Revisit The 1995 Movie From A New Perspective.
You're not alone - personally, I ENJOYED this one, managing to catch it in theaters during its last run and immediately getting the Blu-ray after! I had been a PR fan since childhood, watching re-runs, seeing the movie back in '95 before turning 10, playing with the action figures including the Zords (my brother and I played with the Asian myth beast, Animal and Shogun versions along with Titanus), sleeping on a PR throwpillow, blasting the PR theme song at full volume through my headphones, and carrying clothes in a PR duffle bag for sleepovers. Billy and Trini were my favorite boy & girl PRs, and while I have a brother actually named Jason, there were times I wish I had Jason the Red Ranger for my real brother. So when this came out, I was afraid they were going to get it wrong after what happened to Transformers and Ninja Turtles (curse you Michael Bay!!!), and was surprised to see that it was given respect. Yes it was flawed, and didn't do so well financially probably because people were sick of Hollywood having its way with their childhoods, and I could have done with a little less monotonous "doom & gloom" look (however appropriate it was for the 2010's) but for once they got THIS particular IP right! Dacre Montgomery & Naomi Scott were awesome as Jason and Kimberly, respectively - I think they would make a great Flash Gordon and Dale Arden - Bryan Cranston & Elizabeth Banks were a great Zordon & Rita Repulsa, respectively. And as one on the Spectrum, I was glad that I could once again root for Billy the Blue Ranger instead of groaning that his autism was forced in - here, it's far more believable and a relief to see that he's treated as an actual human being and not be solely defined by his disability or worse, be reduced to a caricature of one. Also, I admire how the plot & Rangers were treated in an adult manner, instead of the usual obnoxious juvenile manner that Bay brought to Transformers and Ninja Turtles. All kids, no matter what they grow up to be, far better admire something that isn't "just made for kids" and treats them like adults, not insulting their intelligence while they're still developing, and that was always to me the most important aspect of the show at its best - despite being derogated by some as a kids' show, and no matter how corny/campy it got, it could still appeal to all ages if it touched on the deeper, more meaningful, and sometimes even more disturbing aspects of life that both children and adults could relate to. It may have been a case of too little too late, but at least the subject was treated with respect instead of ending up like another BAYFORMERS! And while it unsuccessfully "sequel-baited", personally I really feel like we missed out on the sequel, as we did on the scenes being cut out that would have given this film more weight in theaters.
It wasn't just Amy Jo, Jason David Frank was right next to her. There was an alternate cameo where they watch Trini and Kimberly messing around at the Krispy Kreme. In that version of the scene, JDF has his longer hair again.
I genuinely teared up watching this video, because it reminded me of how deeply I was affected by this silly little movie about a show in the 90's that I hadn't watched (outside of the twitch marathon leading up to this movies release). I do also wish it had gotten a seque, it deserved one.
The great thing about all the representation was that it was never in your face and constantly being told to you every 5 minutes. This movie trusted its audience to be smart enough to pick up the cues with the classic 'Show, don't tell' stance
I think the lesson we SHOULD take from 2017 Rangers is that product placements aren't accepted by audiences. the rest of the film was at least passable, but the Krispy Kream thing puts everyone in an "assume the worst" mindset.
I saw Power Rangers Samurai as a kid and Dino Charge when I got older. I loved the creative monsters and Zord fights but I also loved the main characters and the drama and lessons they get into each episode. I think the series sparked my love of personal, slice-of-life drama in my action shows/movies.
I loved this movie and often wished they did more with it. When I first saw it with my family it brought back all the incredible memories of me and my brothers running around the house pretending to be power rangers and sing the theme song.
You my friend, just literally explained the reason why we Ranger fans LOVE the Power Rangers reboot You know what? I'm not sure if this'll work, but let's do a hashtag petition for the 2017 sequel #MakethePowerRangers2017Sequel
I use to love power rangers during the my after school cartoon line up. I miss those times. They were the best times ever. I feel it wasn’t appreciated enough from the fans because most people would watch it would be adults. If this version came out in the 90’s it would have been a box office success.
So I’ll be honest: Power Rangers (I got into the franchise during the “MMPR” and “In Space” Eras) was literally the reason I got into martial arts, as I wanted to be like Tommy (RIP JDF). It was that reason that lead me to train and then teach martial arts from when I was nine to now at twenty-seven. Thus also drove me to keep up with natural arts when I was in the Army with MACP (Modern Army Combatives Program). As such - the 2017 film came out at the height of my military and martial arts journey and career, so besides being an already outstanding film - it’ll always mean that much more to me! As you can tell - Power Rangers has always been a part of my life - in what it motivated me to take on and succeed in.
@@BetterWithBob thank you very much! Great video by the way - like, I remember seeing this film the weekend before I crushed it at a Best Warrior Competition while in the Army - and damn, was I blown away! It was truly a heartfelt, wonderful reboot.
I wish the Max Landis script was honored more, but I appreciate you for pointing out that what we got was actually good, regardless of its flaws. Thanks, man.
Thank you SO MUCH!! I am trying to revamp this movie by turning it into a fan series and the way to describe every single character and their backstory, help me out so much in the way i was trying to see hiw my versions of the characters!
I was never a fan of Power Rangers as a kid. I tried to like it because others did, but I couldn't do it. When I became a father my son immediately fell in love with it and as a toddler was found watching three versions at once using my tablets and the tv. I took him to see this, because I knew he'd like it. I did not expect to love it, but I do. It is so good. It was killed off the way Coke 2 was. A couple loud asshats screamed about how being a purist is the only way to go, and made that seem like the majority. I was so excited for the planned sequels. They finally won me over, just to take it away. I'm going to watch it right now.
@@BetterWithBob My son and I watched it immediately after I left my comment. Still so good. Learned that a graphic novel was released with the film called Aftermath, and it starts immediately after the movie ends. Dealing with the destruction of Angel Grove. I have adhd and horrible insomnia, so I can't remember if you mentioned that in the video. If so, I apologize for repeating back to you what you've already shared.
I am so happy I found someone who loves this movie as much as I did. On one hand I am angry it didn’t get a sequel because these characters were so great but on the other hand the sequel could have been a mess. I am happy it exists. Now the Krispy Cream thing was a bit much. Thanks for your review
I think there is a pressure to make movies these incredible works of art. Sometimes they can be just FUN. Somewhere, we lost fun. People are so critical of the movie isn’t dark or gritty or masterfully made. This movie had flaws but it also had fun. Yes, it had some attempts at being dark (mostly the lighting because remove that and I feel like most events of moodiness would have vanished). It reminded me of a coming of age film from the 80’s/90’s- emotion, action, and an ensemble cast that had differing journey arcs. This movie was decent- not great, but fully deserving of a second movie. I’ll never get how some other movies get multiple movies and this one got nothing.
I love this movie. Sure, there are stuff here and there I wasn't into and iffy on, but I still thought it was a great film. I showed this movie to my family and friends who never watched Power Rangers and they ended up really liking this movie. I wish the multiple sequels they had planned weren't canceled. I was really looking forward to seeing Tommy Oliver become the Green Ranger. People were saying he should've been played by Dylan O'Brien or Booboo Stewart, but I think Leo Howard would've been a perfect choice. Based on how he was on the show "Kickin' It", he's a skilled martial artist and can pull off a ponytail like Tommy LOL. Lionsgate did released concept art for how his armor would've looked in the sequel and it really did seem cool. It even showed what the Sword of Darkness was going to look like. They said that it was originally owned by Zordon before Rita stole it. And since we saw Jason using the Power Sword in this movie, that means Zordon had two swords when he was the Red Ranger. They were supposed to include the weapons for the other rangers, but they didn't include them due to the budget. But they did say we would've saw the other weapons in the sequel. Imagine what the Dragonzord would've looked like. It's hard to make out, but you can barley see the image of a dragon's face on Rita's Green Ranger Coin. Since they had about six films planned, I wonder if that means they would've adapted the entire Zordon Era (MMPR - In Space). When a new reboot happens, I hope it becomes successful. We need a Power Rangers cinematic universe on the big screen. It can definitely bring in new fans like how the MCU made us fans of Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and Guardians of the Galaxy. When the 2017 film came out, I was disappointed it wasn't going to be in IMAX 3D because I wanted that for the Megazord battle. Hopefully a new reboot will do that. Or even 4DX. It better adapt the Zordon Era because imagine the final film being based on "Countdown to Destruction". It would have people just as hyped as we all were for "Infinity War" and "Endgame". However, telling the origin story again would be a problem. Which is why they should just establish it within the first 20 minutes or so.
the design of Goldar in the 2017 Power Rangers movie was no doubt the biggest complaint, flaw, from the PR fandom, i was no exception, i also didn't like how the Mastodon and Triceratops Zords had multiple legs like that of an insect, spider. Another flaw i had with it, was that, part of the movies toyline, they made movie morpher toys, morphers that you could wear as a belt buckle, yet, they didn't use those morphers at all in the entire movie. I found that dumb from a business stand point, when a movie is made, and their is movie based merchandise, toys, yet those items are not used in the movie at all.
Any time anything sentai-related is on screen all my mind does is automatically jump back to *how absolutely awesome The Wonderful 101 is* . Constantly ! It's like an affliction. It's so good it's not even funny.
@@BetterWithBob Look… I don’t want to sound weird or be forceful about recommendations, but… do you have a Steam account, preferably with a good enough controller ? Because if you do there is a Cadet Sized Demo of The Wonderful 101 on Steam… and *need* to play it. And get your ass kicked in a pleasant, provocative manner that will force you to retaliate with attained skills !) You will LOOOOVE the story, man :) This is a real *”tee-hee, you have no idea what you are in for, human”* kind of awesomness ! All hail the creator of stylish action games, the ambassador of god of fun on Earth - Hideki Kamiya ! :D
I still say that they should've kept the theme song for the Zord battle instead of cutting it to a Kanye West song. Seriously, it just... killed the hype, man. Just... WHOSE BRIGHT IDEA WAS IT?!
It should’ve been a Voltron movie. We all watched PR for the martial arts like why is that hard to understand. Even the original 90’s movies included multiple martial arts scenes early on in the movie to keep us going, even if they didn’t morph. This movie was a damn soap opera. At least SOME other actual fight sequences would have made the final morphing scenes appreciated. The original movies ALSO don’t really morph until the very end but they at least had fight scenes in between.
@@BetterWithBob it’s just crazy bro like no lie i was working a shitty job 5 years and hated it. (it was ups) and then low and behold i woke up one morning and saw the power rangers on tv being promoted. and it made my day and i promised i’d never waste my life again cause i couldn’t even afford a $11 movie but was working 12 hour shifts. ended up joining the peace corps the same day and after a little while ended up being deployed for 3 years to foreign areas and really made a differnce in the world !👍
For Kimberly. Her ard could have worked accept the scene during the zord portion of the movie where some monster rocks fell on her former friend car and kim smirked saying "that is what they get" She never really tries take responsibility directly to them
Of course Naomi Scott is good as Kimberly because Naomi Scott is she was one of the best parts of Aladdin 2019 Naomi Scott is really underrated actress who with me
I like the Reboot but I wish we could've gotten more while yes they was more focused on the story I wish we had more action and actually saw the megazord transform and the golddar design while I understand why, I didn't like it that much and I wish they could've used the Morphers and had a longer fight scene against the putty's
@@BetterWithBob thanks I love power rangers currently binging them (again) Because I know I missed some episodes but I know most of the episodes in power rangers (Besides mmpr I never got the time to watch a 3 season and zeo because I never got the chance to watch some of the episodes or can't remember them) And while I like the Reboot yah all my points above But it's also some of the plot holes Like how did zordon became apart of the ship How did the the power coins end up away from zordon How was billy able to find out where the zeo Crystal was(yah they showed how but still) How come rita came back to life but zordon didn't? They was both hit at the same time How was billy the only one able to tap into the Morphin grid yet the others couldn't I thought they all had to have a connection to one another of something like that All that and some other stuff but you get the gist And I wish we could've gotten some scene like in the trailer And got some more character development especially with Jason and his father relationship
People were mostly complaining about seeing the origin story of Batman, Superman and Spider-Man because we have seen their origin so many times. Other characters need an origin story
This movie deserves so much tbh. It show the potential this franchise have. Firstly I want to say great video, I really like your take on the cast and characters which pretty much align with mines since this movie came out. I remember going to the movies to watch it with my sister and my sister made fun of me because as soon as we get the Go Go Power Rangers music I geek out in the theater lol and also at the end with the cameo. I find it funny that a lot of so called fans think this movie is too dark and emo like the 2015 but... have you read the comics! have you've been paying attention! Do you know Tommy's story??!! Also my fav character was of course Trini (and Becky G was great!) even thought I wasn't' so sure about her since I knew only her music career. And on that note, at first I didn't take the news so well, I'm a big fan of the Power Ranger (since it was my childhood) and later on I learn of Super Sentai - which me as the geek I am also love - so I took the news of the reboot with a grain of salt and when the suits came out I wanted to barf tbh, I totally hate them, so much... I was like "That looks like an Iron Man suit" (I don't really like Marvel) so I didn't like it one bit but I still went to watch it to the movies, and OMG! best decision ever because it become one of my fav movies ever! It's a perfect movie? No, but it's a great movie and after I watch it at the movies, the way it presents the suits... I feel in love, after the movie I have no complains I really like them and they're perfect for the movie and tone. Could them be better? of course! but overall they're cool. I like all the changes they did with the characters and the art design of the suits and zords. We do deserve at least a sequel just out of respect. I only wanted a little more to Trini's queerness but I wasn't expecting much tbh I was happy Becky G was pushing it (and apparently Naomi too since those two were anything but straight in all their scenes together!) and I love they took out that love subplot with Kimberly and Jason since it's doesn't add anything to the main story or their characters. And I feel they left it out waiting for the sequel to dive in a little more. And yes #trimberly is real
Besides the look of goldar I was also a little bit disappointed that Tommy Oliver doesn't make an appearance but I get why it was nice that Jason David Frank and amy jo Johnson made a cameo I'm still shocked that Jason passed away a few months ago
Came across this video a year after the fact. I was never particularly a Power Rangers fan, probably because I was too old. But it's definitely a genre I have loved since I was little, and I thought this movie was great. I was sad that it was not embraced more. How do the shows hold up for new watchers? My kids are eight and six, and also love all the stuff I loved, but I won't be able to cheer lead around the rough edges of the stuff that has aged weirdly.
I went with a friend that had no idea what power rangers was. He was so confused when everyone in the theater was clapping and applauding at the cameos at the end.
I definitely enjoyed the time spent get to know the rangers as individuals and how they became friends despite their differences, I enjoyed the build up and wait for their first morph, I just wish the fights were longer, but I can never bring myself to enjoy this films take on Goldar, the evil green ranger/Rita absolutely love it but the drive for gold to make goldar not my favorite decision
I have wondered what it would it have taken to make a finanically successful Power Rangers movie when this one came out. Power Rangers was a phenomena in its heyday, but while it's remained a household name and consistently successful franchise, it's still largely seen as a for kids property that they watch for a year or two before they grow out of it (though I largely contend that there's never been that much of a difference between Power Rangers and other superheroes aside from the target age and quality of writing). If making a truly popular PR movie in 2017 were possible, would I have liked it as much as the one we got? I suspect I probably wouldn't have. I've seen most of the marvel movies, but even the good ones I've generally only watched once. PR 2017 I've seen several times, because even with its faults there's a sincerity that I believe deserves a lot of praise.
11:49 Steve Cardenas did those flips himself, take after take after take bc the director wasn’t happy with it. He said his legs felt like mush after filming that bc he was wearing those heavy hiking boots - and he did those flips himself.
The only thing i took issue with on this film is goldare. He was epic in the original but was just a gold souless robot in the film. I also always loved Billy. Billy will always be my favourite!
Such a damn shame this movie did not get the franchise it deserved. Loved all the representation (imo female queerness is a cheap shot to inclusivity when straight men fetishize it, but still great nonetheless) TBH yes sucked they were only rangers the last 20 mins, but great origins story, with 5 more movies that would have been badass, imagine a green, then white ranger?? Lord Zed?? Geez.
Yeah I'd agree with you that female queer rep tends to be better, probably because it's more palatable to conservative viewers, especially if you look at the debacle that was the Supernatural last season
This actually had potential. The cast was practically perfect. I personally would've loved the film had the zords, megazord, n Goldar had actually looked cool n not an incoherent CGI mess. The sequel would've been killer had it been GREENlit cuz it was obvious that Rita would pass on her green powercoin to Tommy. Would've been EPIC! Oh well 💔
Well said. I heard terrible things about this movie. Honestly I enjoyed it a lot. If the zords and megazords had been better when I was seeing the toys in stores, I would have given this movie a chance sooner.
Hi Bob! This was an amazing breakdown of the 2017 #MMPR movie! I'm giggling listening to you analyze each of the new characters in detail. As promised, New Sub!!! 💪🏼💥 PS. I just read your description and seeing *#Ireland** and Charmed* made me squeak like a crazy fanboy! I did not expect that! Why did I NOT see that sooner?! 😤 Also, I didn't catch the typical Irish accent in the 3 vids I've watched now. 🤔 You lost it? Big *#Charmed* fanatic here from Asia (and an Ireland enthusiast as well, thanks to #Enya, #TheCorrs and, you probably despise them, #Westlife --- we love them here though, fortunately, I suppose).
Power rangers 2017 was an ok movie, but it had a lot of elements that were really enjoyable IT ENRAGES ME THAT FRANCHISES LIKE DIVERGENT GOT 3 MOVIES WHEN THEY GOT WORSE AND WORSE AND SUICIDE SQUAD GOT ANOTHER CHANCE AFTER THE FIRST ONE WAS PROBABLY THE WORST SUPERHERO MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN.
As a 30 year old girl i must admit that i originally went to watch the movie because i heard there was a lesbian power ranger. I was a bit bummed that even though knowing about it i completly missed the scene about it and wondered who it was. Trini and Kimberly were so gay together XD. I still enjoyed the movie very much. It was even my first power ranger movie. I was a bit sad there was no next movie with tommy.
I find 2017 frustrating - like, I see what they were going for. And it probably could have been a great film in a series, but it’s harder to engage in the standalone elements. The way I see it, they strayed too far from what they came from, but didn’t quite get to where they were going. This left it in this really strange middle ground.
I never liked the original power rangers as a kid. It was too campy for me. I know that is what they were going for, but it wasn't for me. Why did the villains just stand there while they did their transformation sequence? Why did the monsters look so goofy, why do none of your villains have comprehensive plans? Why does everything look slightly wet all the time? The 2017 movie was solid though. I did enjoy it. Yes I do pick apart cinema to this day.
Honestly, much as I liked the majority of the film, I feel like it was let down by the action. I would have liked to see a sequel do the action better.
Apologies if that's what was inferred. I was talking about how some fans were insisting that the character should have been Asian to avoid any 'white saviour' implications. I imagine that was also brought on by fatigue over the lack of Asian representation in the MCU at the time. Besides, adaptations had been race swapping characters successfully enough before then, and TV shows have always been better for diversity than film.
It was trash, it tried to be gritty without really digging into it as none of the heroes pay any consequence; and at the same time tried to capture the easy going feel of the original but filming it with horror movie's tones. The characters, outside of Jason and Billy, were absolutely nothing like the originals, the actors were goddamn awful, and the "teen drama" points were so unbereably "american teen cliche" out of Mean Girls and High School Musical stereotypes that was absolutely vomitive for anyone outside the US. Cherry on top were the awful costumes and zords. Nothing about this movie was entertaining, nor innovative. It was any american teen drama show with some fight in colored suits at the end.
Maybe it was the thick accent, but I had trouble understanding the title of one of the movies the narrator mentioned in this video - it sounded like “Pie Whackers”?!?! It had an actress that I recognized from somewhere else, but I couldn’t look it up on IMDB. Is there anyone who can help me in this endeavor?
@@BetterWithBob Thanks a bunch. The actress I had recognized was Nicole Munoz from “Van Helsing” and “Defiance”. Apparently she was also in “Supernatural” as well. I never saw Laurie Holden in the clip, but I know her from other things as well. I guess I’ll have to search out this movie.
Yeah I just find her a bit bland with the "you must work hard" characterization they gave her. But it has been a few years since I saw the movie (I watched it twice I think) so perhaps a re-watch is due
@@BetterWithBob I'm surprised because david carradine starred in the original series plus Jodie foster and drew Barrymore father made an appearance in the show
I remember seeing this movie on opening day back in 2017. Yes, the action was saved for the climax of the movie, but I enjoyed the drama and all of the character arcs and their scenes of them bonding. I felt that this was an underrated movie.
The movie is horrible
Thank you so much for your comment :) Made my day :)
May the power protect you
we do forgive you for being wrong
@@cesar6447 it's a damn good movie. What are you on about.
My nephew has autism and he was so happy to see that Billy was the first person to morph until their ranger
Ooh I actually didn't think of that
Does he understand the vulgarity?
@veganskeletons4131 what do you mean
I love video essays on the 2017 Power Rangers movie. It deserves so much more recognition and should have been a series.
Hopefully it happens since Dacre Montgomery needs a new role after leaving Stranger Things 😉
power rangers 2017 is probably one of the most predictable and average films ever. No creativity at all. Just muddy cgi and cliche characters.
The only thing the movie was really missing was an extra 30-45 minutes of action to be near perfect imo
@@GuardianArk15 so the movie should be 3 hours long.
Thank you for your passionate words :) Well said :)
I loved this Movie I grew up off of Powers Rangers since day one, the Actors were incredible, I actually hoping for a Sequel with them mentioning Tommy in the end, that would have been a break thru movie with that story line from the original show💯🔥🤷♂️
I'm an original Power Rangers fan, and this film was not terrific.
May the power protect you as well sir :) Thank you for watching
I cannot comprehend how this wasn't a mega hit... multiple generations raised by the TV show and no one showed up to see it 😥
This had enough throwbacks with just enough wokeness (done right) to make it the perfect update, it had everything.
Agreed on the chemistry. I wasn't surprised when the actors said they became close friends during filming
That last line I will probably end up stealing at some point lol
I really enjoyed Dacre as Jason he really pulled it off I also liked Kimberly arc in the film naomi Scott was perfect in the role
She really was
I'm not at all upset we didn't get the six sequels that was supposed to follow Power Rangers 2017 but I do wish they would have turned the movie into a Power Rangers reboot series.
They had such potential
never thought i’d see a jem and the holograms reference in a power ranger video
that being said this movie is way better than people give it credit for
Especially surprising to me since Jem was before my time 😂
I liked the 2017 movie too! It makes me sad it didn't do well enough for a sequel
I suppose there's always fan fiction lol
I loved the 2017 movie and watched it so many times in theaters. I’m still baffled people didn’t appreciate it.
I wish I'd had the sense to see it more than once in cinemas lol
Just discovered this channel due to your Charmed review and am SO delighted to know you're also a Power Rangers fan. RPM is my favorite season. And this movie was, in fact, awesome!! I also like how it could be the reason representation is so great in the latest season: Dino Fury.
Same
As someone who didn't grow up watching the original Power Rangers series, mainly due to it being before my time, this movie was an absolute blast for me. I think it's mostly carried by the performances, but I also just love this movie's interpretations of the Rangers themselves. They all feel fleshed out and having something distinctly memorable about them. So, you can imagine how upset I am that a sequel is probably never going to happen.
I think we have the same brain lol
id kill for a version of the movie with the deleted scenes because those scenes add SO MUCH to the movie, might even edit the it myself who knows, but would prefer someone else more professional do it, drop a 10th anniversary directors cut or something idk
Aww thank you for your comment 😊
The great thing about all the representation was that it was never in your face and constantly being told to you every 5 minutes. This movie trusted its audience to be smart enough to pick up the cues with the classic 'Show, don't tell' stance
I think the lesson we SHOULD take from 2017 Rangers is that product placements aren't accepted by audiences. the rest of the film was at least passable, but the Krispy Kream thing puts everyone in an "assume the worst" mindset.
I mean from what I saw, a lot of people found it hilarious because it was so over the top it was hilarious
@@BetterWithBob you're willfully ignorant
I saw Power Rangers Samurai as a kid and Dino Charge when I got older. I loved the creative monsters and Zord fights but I also loved the main characters and the drama and lessons they get into each episode. I think the series sparked my love of personal, slice-of-life drama in my action shows/movies.
I'm meeting a lot of people lately and Samurai was their formative season :)
I loved this movie and often wished they did more with it. When I first saw it with my family it brought back all the incredible memories of me and my brothers running around the house pretending to be power rangers and sing the theme song.
I love this movie. The cast was truly PERFECT, and I’m bummed we’ll never get to see their take on Tommy
You my friend, just literally explained the reason why we Ranger fans LOVE the Power Rangers reboot
You know what? I'm not sure if this'll work, but let's do a hashtag petition for the 2017 sequel
#MakethePowerRangers2017Sequel
I would love that for sure 🙂
Beautifully said 😊
@@BetterWithBob thank you very much!
Thank you for this video, Bob!
Good job, thanks for making this!!! Great analysis on an underrated movie.
Well thank you for watching 🙂
I rewatched it recently and stand by how good it is
@@BetterWithBob My son and I watched it immediately after I left my comment.
Got to see this film early at a fan screening, was so pleased with it. Hopefully the new Reboot can surpass what this film accomplished.
I would've loved more movies for the Power Ranger's movies. Like, the second one could've been about Lord Zed
Yeah I imagine he'd show up in the sequel to help defrost Rita or something. Or perhaps in the third movie. So much potential
Yes totally agree
I am so happy I found someone who loves this movie as much as I did. On one hand I am angry it didn’t get a sequel because these characters were so great but on the other hand the sequel could have been a mess. I am happy it exists. Now the Krispy Cream thing was a bit much.
Thanks for your review
Thanks for your comment. And would you believe it was originally supposed to be a McDonalds lol
@@BetterWithBob Oh no McDonalds would have been awful. Lol. Thanks for your videos especially the charmed videos.
Box Office receipts unfortunately

I still say that they should've kept the theme song for the Zord battle instead of cutting it to a Kanye West song.
Seriously, it just... killed the hype, man. Just... WHOSE BRIGHT IDEA WAS IT?!
The studio probably 😂
I loved this movie. So mad we didn’t get more. And I’m even more upset cause I had no clue there were supposed to be to be FIVE movies.🥺
In the 2010s I think every potential franchise starter was planned to have five movies.
I Loved This Movie... Thank You For The Breakdown
Well thank you for watching :)

Hello from the Netherlands!!! Love the power rangers and this video!!!
For Kimberly.
Her ard could have worked accept the scene during the zord portion of the movie where some monster rocks fell on her former friend car and kim smirked saying "that is what they get"
She never really tries take responsibility directly to them
Of course Naomi Scott is good as Kimberly because Naomi Scott is she was one of the best parts of Aladdin 2019 Naomi Scott is really underrated actress who with me
"Should've been asian" shows Iron fist 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
I like the Reboot but I wish we could've gotten more
while yes they was more focused on the story
I wish we had more action and actually saw the megazord transform
and the golddar design while I understand why, I didn't like it that much
and I wish they could've used the Morphers
and had a longer fight scene against the putty's
All very valid points :)
@@BetterWithBob thanks
I love power rangers currently binging them (again)
Because I know I missed some episodes but I know most of the episodes in power rangers
(Besides mmpr I never got the time to watch a 3 season and zeo because I never got the chance to watch some of the episodes or can't remember them)
And while I like the Reboot yah all my points above
But it's also some of the plot holes
Like how did zordon became apart of the ship
How did the the power coins end up away from zordon
How was billy able to find out where the zeo Crystal was(yah they showed how but still)
How come rita came back to life but zordon didn't? They was both hit at the same time
How was billy the only one able to tap into the Morphin grid yet the others couldn't I thought they all had to have a connection to one another of something like that
All that and some other stuff but you get the gist
And I wish we could've gotten some scene like in the trailer
And got some more character development especially with Jason and his father relationship
the megazord design was silly , could've been much better, basically my only complaint of the movie
I adored the power rangers as I kid, my first season was Dino Thunder, I remember that even Mighty Morphin was watchable in the 2000's
"I was nostalgic for In Space/Lost Galaxy."
...Okay, this is getting scary now. GET OUT OF MY HEAD!
Did he clap too once you explained it?
Wow I’ve never seen the concept art on the Zords man they were perfect
The only "real problem" i had with this movie were the suit designs for the rangers.
This was such a good movie and i hate the fandom for not supporting it
I think the first trailer tainted people's perceptions of it, making it look super grimdark and angsty
Hated this movie because it was not power rangers in terms of martial arts action the zords were still small not it at all
to each their own :)
Oh well 💔
Think of the possibilities
Well said. I heard terrible things about this movie. Honestly I enjoyed it a lot. If the zords and megazords had been better when I was seeing the toys in stores, I would have given this movie a chance sooner.
@@zer0prototype5 if only!
Hi Bob! This was an amazing breakdown of the 2017 #MMPR movie! I'm giggling listening to you analyze each of the new characters in detail. As promised, New Sub!!! 💪🏼💥
PS. I just read your description and seeing *#Ireland** and Charmed* made me squeak like a crazy fanboy! I did not expect that! Why did I NOT see that sooner?! 😤
Also, I didn't catch the typical Irish accent in the 3 vids I've watched now. 🤔 You lost it?
Big *#Charmed* fanatic here from Asia (and an Ireland enthusiast as well, thanks to #Enya, #TheCorrs and, you probably despise them, #Westlife --- we love them here though, fortunately, I suppose).
Love original power rangers movies
Good fun for sure!
Power rangers 2017 was an ok movie, but it had a lot of elements that were really enjoyable
IT ENRAGES ME THAT FRANCHISES LIKE DIVERGENT GOT 3 MOVIES WHEN THEY GOT WORSE AND WORSE AND SUICIDE SQUAD GOT ANOTHER CHANCE AFTER THE FIRST ONE WAS PROBABLY THE WORST SUPERHERO MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN.
Now the only thing I hear is morbin time
This guy gets an immediate sub for recognizing the greatness that is Dog Soldiers 😁👌the essay is good too 😅
I did a whole video last year on why Dog Soldiers is awesome actually 😉
Tbf, not being touchy feely or not getting a joke doesn't = autism.
But in Bobby's case, I do see that being the cause of that
Are you referring to me or Billy the character?
As a 30 year old girl i must admit that i originally went to watch the movie because i heard there was a lesbian power ranger. I was a bit bummed that even though knowing about it i completly missed the scene about it and wondered who it was. Trini and Kimberly were so gay together XD. I still enjoyed the movie very much. It was even my first power ranger movie. I was a bit sad there was no next movie with tommy.
Did you see in cinemas or watch later?
@@BetterWithBob i saw it at home. Don't have a lot of friends who are into super heroes :)
I find 2017 frustrating - like, I see what they were going for. And it probably could have been a great film in a series, but it’s harder to engage in the standalone elements.
The way I see it, they strayed too far from what they came from, but didn’t quite get to where they were going. This left it in this really strange middle ground.
I respect that POV :)
Also, since you've covered Power Rangers, is there a chance you could cover more tokusatsu in the future?
One of the biggest let downs I have seen in years😔. I loved the hell out of the 2017 movie
Which part was the let down?
@@BetterWithBob the reception towards it. I wanted it to get at least one sequel
I love your headcanon!!
Why thank you :)
Great video Bob
Thank you for watching :)
Amy Jo Johnson cameo? Did you miss Jason David Frank (Tommy) beside her or not enjoy his cameo? 😊
Honestly, much as I liked the majority of the film, I feel like it was let down by the action. I would have liked to see a sequel do the action better.
They. Did. Not. Flip!!!!😤😤😤😤
The iron fist casting was comic accurate and its kinda racist to say the martial arts super hero should be Asian
I rented Tin Man once and I loved ir
Full thing is up on here 🙂
I can't watch this movie without eating Krispy Kreme
I love tin man and the 10th kingdom
Right?
My brother grafting 😎🔥🔥🔥
Thank you Bumblebee ;)
And now you know where the confusion came from ;)
Maybe it was the thick accent, but I had trouble understanding the title of one of the movies the narrator mentioned in this video - it sounded like “Pie Whackers”?!?! It had an actress that I recognized from somewhere else, but I couldn’t look it up on IMDB. Is there anyone who can help me in this endeavor?
The movie is called Pyewacket, starring Laurie Holden and Nicole Munoz
@@BetterWithBob Thanks a bunch. The actress I had recognized was Nicole Munoz from “Van Helsing” and “Defiance”. Apparently she was also in “Supernatural” as well. I never saw Laurie Holden in the clip, but I know her from other things as well. I guess I’ll have to search out this movie.
They ruined Goldar and that is all I care about. 🤣🤣🤣
There might be a sequel because saban gave the rights to Hasbro and hasbro and paramount are talking about a sequel
I think Dacre Montgomery said they were rebooting it without this cast but hopefully they reconsider
I never realized billy was autistic, he carried the whole team
This movie should've had the Martial arts choreography the power weapons the goldar was terrible idk why they left out squat baboo finster etc
...Are you saying Princess Tiana is a boring character???
But this is a great video, I love this movie
Yeah I just find her a bit bland with the "you must work hard" characterization they gave her. But it has been a few years since I saw the movie (I watched it twice I think) so perhaps a re-watch is due
@@BetterWithBob Yeah I can definitely understand that, Naomi Scott did a great job as Kimberly, the character development was great
Bob Have you checked out the reboot of the show kung fu 🤔
I don't even know of the original 🙈
@@BetterWithBob I'm surprised because david carradine starred in the original series plus Jodie foster and drew Barrymore father made an appearance in the show
