A Mountain Biker’s Perspective on Four Wheeling

- This was all filmed at a private off-road park on marked trails.
Soon I'll be riding again, but for now I decided to take the opportunity to make a four wheeling video! I know a LOT of you are also interested in this stuff, so I hope you enjoy it. During this trip to Windrock I also got to check out the "Crewmanche" , which is a one of a kind crew cab Jeep Comanche.

I should point out that this was at a private off-road park with marked trails, on a mountain used for everything from downhill mountain biking, to logging, to natural gas extraction, to wind power generation. Does it look sort of crude? Yes. Even I cringe at the tires spinning and tearing up the mountain, but I remind myself that the off-road park could someday be logged, or built into a luxury subdivision called "Brap Meadows at Windrock". Hopefully with the money the Jeep crowd brings into Oliver Springs, they can justify using more of the mountain for hiking, biking, camping, and Jeeping rather than other much worse activities.
You probably won't see this but... if you plan on going to Baker's Creek Preserve in Knoxville, Devils Racetrack is closed.... atleast it was last weekend.
Seth's Bike Hacks I love that I live here crazy that I never knew about windrock until I started mountain biking!!!
Seth, despite this being a mountain bike channel, and I mountain bike, I thought this was something really cool, and you should make videos about it every chance you get!
BixIn DaBox thanks for that was planning on going next weekend but Bobopalooza is at windrock might rent something with more travel than my bike go hit the 🗻
It's good to see Knoxville on the RUclips lol shit I live ten minutes away. Good video and good luck
8:40 Seth experiences what it's like to be a water bottle on his bike.
😆
Ur right
best comment lol
Nooo i was going to say that lol!
😂
"Everyone postpones their repairs to the last possible second" Why is everyone like this no matter their hobby? hahaha such a true line
Lazy as crap then your like oh shit my trip is coming up
Just want to make sure we’re clear, you do this too, right?
Because money
Same way with cars
What if your hobby is fixing things?

I loved it when Seth pulled at the seat belt but nothing happened!!
awww f it
"yeah, we don't do that here"
Jeep's seatbelts lock when there's significant forward or backward acceleration. When going up or down a steep climb, they'll lock because the mechanism can't tell the difference between accelerating really fast and a steep climb.
Rip drama you will be missed
Hello Seth,
For the past two months I've been watching you non stop. I've learned so much about Mountain biking from you. I have a really big interest in mountain biking because of watching you. I built my own track which took about forty eight hours + ( Still building ) building it. I've been practicing so hard to were my hands are burning from riding so much. My parents are getting annoyed from me talking about bikes, trails and well your channel. Thank you so much for making videos. Thank you for your time in making these amazing videos. I've been outside so much more because of you. I thank you for making these videos from the bottom of my heart. I am saving up for a new Diamondback overdrive St, Fox Racing Proframe helmet and more gear you've recommended. I am going to work hard to become a professional mountain biker.
Thank you so much.
CSJDrums No I have a bike but, I don't have a "Good" bike. My bike is a messed up one
CSJDrums I know but I rather get something good then something that will break easy
CSJDrums Both.
Day Of War I have a Raleigh tokul 2 and absolutely love it. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is getting into mountain biking. Mabey check it out. It’s about $750.
My $129 walgoose gets the job done... i guess

As an April fools joke you should post a video about how you are selling all of your bikes to do off-roading
Seth’s off-road hacks
Heck yes I would do that
“Sell” them to Alexander (The Singletrack Sampler) and at the end of the video he gives them back to you because he doesn’t have space in his van
@Jack Vinje okay Jawsh
Rip drama we miss you and you will always remain in our hearts.
Although this was certainly not your average seth video, I thought that you did a quality job at connecting an alternate hobby to mountain biking making it entertaining to a viewer who may not even be a four wheeling fan. I loved the not-your-average content and keep up the awesome videos!
I love how Seth makes a feeble attempt to put on the seat at 8:30 before just giving up completely, LOL!!

NEVER use winch cable around a tree... always use a strap
yeah i noticed that super dangerous and can cause damage to the line and tree
Yeah, the normal practice is to use what is called a tree saver strap. Less damage to the tree and to your winch rope.
Yeah it can scar the tree he needs a tree saver
I cringed at what the comments section would look like after seeing that as well lol
Seth isnt even wearing a seat belt doing something that has a high chance of resulting in a roll over........
Seth's bike hacks thanks for being a awesome RUclipsr and always making me smile.
9:28 I don't see any tree savers. Also, in re earlier, I didn't see any weights on cable, not even an old jacket. They know the danger, talk about it, and then didn't do anything to mitigate it.
Cyberdyne Systems: Skynet a very ignorant sport in general. Driving 15mpg vehicles to tow a 10mpg vehicle to go tearing up the natural landscape. All while having a scared, whimpering dog in the back seat.
brian these are trails driving a 15 mph truck to tow a 10mpg Jeep is important what happens if you wreck and you pop a tire brake a rim or the drive shaft tears off and the dog was clearly going thru the soft areas of the trail and when they sent it up the hill the dog wasn’t there
@@brian-yt4re also the ram doesn't usually get 15 mpg, it got that when towing a whole jeep behind it.
15 on a good day, my ram 1500 gets 9.5 highway
100% agree.
Y’all should’ve done horseface 😂
When I win the lotto, I’m going to hire Seth to narrate my life. I can manual for $hit so he can teach me that as well.
I was just about to buy a nice mtb to replace my old one, then I found a Jeep. I now own nothing but said Jeep and my life revolves around it. Good times.
I love that this channel has these random adventures in between mountain biking
I'm a landcruiser person, and would personally never ever buy a jeep but these things are beast off road !
melias67 me too... That crewmanche was sick! I've got an 80 series
Ethan ridesbikes nice! I have a 60 series.
I’m with you guys. 60 guy here and would never buy a Jeep. Just feel like they are the “glock” of the 4x4 world, ok stock but drop all kinds a mods in them and then you get something. My stock 60 has already done stuff my friends modded jeeps couldn’t. All good though, we all love dirt regardless and fun to heckle each other!!!
Jeeps are shit
Unreliable
As a mountain biker and a tj Jeep owner what more could I ask of this channel
Okay, my name is seth, I've loved watching Seth's bike hacks, I've owned 3 two door jeep Cherokees and have loved getting into mtb! This video is awesome!
As I go back to watching this video, it is a foreshadowing of the crawling to come
This took me back to my youth. My husband, back then boyfriend, and I used to do this stuff for fun. Awesome video. DRAMA is a trail dog just a different kind of trail.
As an avid off-roader and amateur mountain biker who follows you, I sincerely appreciate the shout-out to the off-roading community! They make a great pair with mountain biking!
Seth to be honest 4 wheeling is what attracted me to mtb as I grew up riding 4 wheelers and dirt bike all the time the thing that keeps bringing me back to mtb though is that bikes are so much more maneuverable then 4 wheelers or even dirt bikes for that matter
I am a big off roader and trying to get into mountain biking. I can appreciate people like you being open to both worlds because they are so related. Off roaders get a bad rap but most of us are decent. I used to have a Cherokee but I sold it last year, it was fun offroad but terrible on the road and I dont have a trailer. I have a full size pickup but hoping to get into something smaller in the next few years. I actually love the hummer h3t's so I might swing that way now that they are getting a bit older.
7:24 Just a little correction there: what you're actually referring to is locking the differentials, not the hubs.
Awesome video though Seth!! Looks like a ton of fun. Really enjoyed watching this as a enthusiast of both bicycles and cars.
he possibly was trying to use noob freindly terms
@@lukem9962 Well, there's a difference between using layman's terms and being factually incorrect, and this is a case of the latter.
Thank you, i came to say the same thing
All hubs are locked when in 4wd; whether all 4 wheels spin or not depends on the differential
Yeah but aren't they locked by rotating a dial thing in the center of the hub? I've seen that quite a bit before. Seen people get out, turn the "hub dial" thing on both front wheels then get back in and the wheels all start turning instead of just the back. Obviously I don't know anything about automobiles though. The people always tell me that the dial things lock the wheels so that 4WD can actually engage the wheels. One dial even "slipped" or something and the wheel quit turning but the other one kept going. Maybe Seth is like me and just calls it "locking the hubs" because we view the hub dial things being turned and see that as locking the hubs to the axle or whatever?
Heh this is why I'm not into this kind of stuff. I'm too stupid to understand any of it. Theres no hope lol. Bicycles are as complicated as I can understand (sometimes understand to be totally honest).
@@hailbaphomet Those dials you're talking about are the hub locks. They lock the hubs to the axle shafts. If you leave them locked when you're not driving in 4WD, then the front wheels will spin the axle shafts, the differential, and the front drive shaft unnecessarily, which wastes fuel and causes extra wear. That's why you can unlock them. Modern 4WD trucks do this electronically and automatically.
All of this I just described is separate from a locking differential. With a standard open differential, only the wheel with the least traction will spin, which obviously isn't useful off road. The locking differential forces both wheels to always turn at the same speed, which provides much more traction off road.
I’m here as a diehard “jeeper” for years and new mountain biker. Mountain biking is great because you get the fun of being in the woods but without the stress of breaking things.
We'll miss you old buddy.
In rememberence of Drama also I known as Drams we'll see you at the next trail
I used to do this with my 1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredo with 33" and a 4" lift back in the mid 1990s. what a blast! And the Crewmanche is AMAZING!!!!
Two cars enter, one car leave
Mountain Biker and Jeeper here. Loved this video! My Jeep is a heavily modified '02 TJ on 35s, lockers, winch, 454 gears, Dana 44s. Lots of fun.
Who is here to pay respect to drama rip drama you were a good boy
Well in biking I am clueless. But now this 4 wheelings you're doing something I know really well and all the break downs and the dreaded mud removal. and repacking all the bearings getting the mud out. It can be an expensive hobby but what great fun.
I have such a soft spot for jeep Cherokee's
Windrock is one of my favorite places in the world. Amazing wheeling, plus mountain biking.
8:29 the look of fear on poor Seth's face was priceless he looked so fearful I almost feel bad nah it's funny
Jeeper and mountain biker here. Love both worlds.
The crewmanche most likely did better due to its larger wheel base (the distance between both set of tires from forward to back). It allows a vehicle to get up hills a lot faster and easier there’s only a little drawback and it’s maneuverability but most trails aren’t too bad unless they’re specifically meant to push that feature of a vehicle.
Quite the opposite, 4 door Wranglers are less capable than 2 doors because they are easier to get stuck as the car floor will graze the ground and beach itself when youre climbing on a steep hill and then at the top its downhill. Doesnt even need to go downhill, just to suddenly become level at the top of the hill. It did best mainly because its all custom made with the purpose of deep offroading. Saw those horizontal rear shocks?
Major Tom tru tru
David’s Food review it did better because of the wider track width, lockers, and custom suspension.
skifeizzle that’s true but a wider wheel base is better for climbing
THIS IS LIFE. LITERALLY.
Some how my search for gopro cameras has found me lurking on Berm Peaks construction videos through the suggestions on RUclips. My brother-in-law is a mountain bikers so what the hell, I see what this is about. Then this video came into my feed.
I've been off-roading since I was 7 years old (and I mean, in the driver's seat) and, next year after my 50th Birthday, we are planning a trip across Australia's Simpson Desert, skirting through the Strzelecki Desert to places like Noccundra, Innaminka, Birdsville, and across the run a Marathon (actually 11klm -8mi- fun run) around Uluru - hence the wish to buy a Gopro..
What a great video, dude. Love the mud hill and enjoyed it from an outsider's perspective.
"spotter"- over here in Nagaland we use the slightly cruder term handyman😁
I love both mountain biking and four wheelin'... they go hand in hand 😊
Can't help but think how awesome a collaboration with Bleeping Jeep would be
Landon Ashby lol yes they have to make that happen
Go here all the time. On ATVs. It’s all part of the fun. God bless you guys man.
Haha looks crazy. The real question is, how did you deal with that muddy sock and shoe. Did you put the shoe on with the muddy sock, or take the sock off and put the shoe back on?? 😂
or do something completely different?
haha I just dealt with an uncomfortable foot for the rest of the day
I miss good'ol drama what a perfect little pup may he rest in peace
Seth I’m super glad you found out what real Jeeping is like! Now when you see those mallcrawler jeeps at the gas station with fuel rims you can laugh inside your head lime the rest of us do
I've seen too many car channels and this video from your perspective is refreshing. 🍻
If you start off-roading I swear this is going to be the best channel on earth!! (even more)
4 wheeling actually got me into mountain biking. It’s good to see it go the other way around
Typical cummins owner trying to say he getting 26 mpg while towing 😂
I found once I bought a Wrangler I spent a lot more time outdoors doing more of everything I already loved doing. It’s truly a Jeep thing...
Extreme 4×4 would be interested in the "Crewmanche." Give Spike TV a call.
There is no more Spike T.V.........got bought out and cancelled :^(
Should give daddy doug a call and see if he wants to review it
I love the clip at 7:08, the thing looks like an RC car, I'm amazed at what these vehicles can do
My family mountain bikes and jeeps to, I would love if you did more jeep content
Great video bridging the gap between two hobbies that I share. I would say you did a good job of showing and getting to the heart of what real offroading is. Only thing I would point out is that instead of saying "locking hubs" is a feature true offroad vehicles have, I would say "locking differentials". Though you can still certainly offroad with "open differentials", it helps to be able to lock the differential on the front or rear axle to keep the left and right axle shafts turning together at equal speeds/ power. Locking hubs are just what allows the front axles to receive power on certain types of 4WD systems. Unlocked front hubs just means you are still in 2WD. People dont realize that 4WD doesn't necessarily mean all wheels have equal power. Torque follows the path of least resistance, so if you have open differentials you really kinda sorta only still have 2WD, except it's one wheel in the front and one wheel in the back. With a tire in the air on an open diff axle, that wheel spins and the other does nothing. When you lock the differential on that axle, now both wheels split the torque equally. I've blabbed enough there is a lot to this stuff that can't be explained in a RUclips comment, solid axles, independent suspension, fill time 4WD part time, center differentials, transfer cases, etc. etc.
I can't imagine your buddies not telling you this. But do not four wheel without your seat belt on. I lost a windshield to a person who didn't believe that.
Ouch! 😟😬
I think the overlap between mountain biking and off-roading is because there is something satisfying about rubber tires over rocks, mud, dirt, etc. It is appealing to conquer nature with nothing but man made rubber.
Drama cracks me up every single time
picked up my first duel suspension MTB today, in my 2 door wrangler. love it.
The cj and xj jeeps are epic stout motors reliable and comfy
Looks fun. Heal up. Props to the Crewmache builder.
I saw that jeep crewmanche on Sunday at windrock. I wish I new you were in that group I would love to meet you!
Sorry for your loss Seth
You can get a modified Jeep Cherokee xj for like 4,000, you should do a little looking on Craigslist. 🤙🤙
Prolly comes with a free kidnapping too
Heck yeah! I knew I picked a good channel to subscribe to!
I MTB, and I also off road. The offroad aspect came from having to 4 wheel to some sweet trails we could hit on our bikes back in the day. It was a gnarly ride up, so taking a vehicle just made more sense. We also camped out and made it a thing. Being a MTBer, I try to leave as little impact on the trail as much as possible, but sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do to get through the washouts.
Glad to see you enjoyed yourself, hopefully I'll see you around on the trails sometime bike or no bike!
Rip drama😭😢

So cool to hear your perspective on 4 wheeling, always loved your MTB videos and this one was great as well.
RIP drama :(
Great vid! That crewmanche is one unstable 4x4 BEAST!!!
Jeep stands for .... just -- empty -- every -- pocket
Because everything fucking breaks, lol. I like the old toyota cruisers.
Basil We've had two BJ40's for a long time. They never actually broke, but they started to get so rusty, they weren't safe to drive anymore. Technically they are in great shape, but body isnt.
Tupetsi Yeah, we own 3 HJ40's, One is ex military completely stock it was stuck on an island underwater for years we bought it and got it shipped over its completely rusted out but were working on it, we also have a mine truck HJ40 they only made about 20 of them, and also my dad owns the HJ47 that was in the crocodile dundee superbowl advert. The first car I drove was a FJ60 with no power steering when I was 8.
Basil You should definitely make a restoration video! Which military did it belong to? Why was it underwater?
It was the Australian Norforce, The previous owner had bought it ages ago after it came out of the war and got it shipped to fraser island as a beach car, then she got it stuck in a ditch on the beach and couldnt get it out years later we went to the island on holiday and found it next to the beach with the top of the rollbar sticking out of the water. Those engines are indestructible though after a few weeks of working on it we got the engine working but everything, the diff, brakes, fuel tank, and somehow the transmission is all full of a mud sand salt water mixture lol.
No way!!! as a mountain bike rider and Comanche owner, I would have never thought my interests would collide here... on Seth's channel! I am beyond stoke to see RSD fab Crewmanche on Seth's channel!
Love from germany
I’ve often thought of mountain biking as human powered off roading. And I’ve always been fascinated by both off roading and mountain biking. You can never underestimate a good suspension system!
How about: " Set's Offroad Hacks " 😂
Love the XJ!!! thx Seth. the perfect combo you should get one, it be awesome to see you offroad and MTB in your vids. Jeep, its not just a choice, its a way of life.
Ever think about making a full suspension “murder machine”?
I don't think it would be the same. Single speed full suspension bikes arent really that fun.
Jadon Hale I have one, and it's a blast. +Seth has that extra diamond back frame lying around.
Oh maybe the one I tried was just not great. And I guess with the parts that would be a cool addition to his channel.
He should just make one out of his old release 3 frame
the main problem with them is chain tesion you basically have a deraileur which defeats the point of single speed in the first place
I have a Wrangler and a Renegade - love my jeeps. I do not do this level of Jeeping. Mine are mainly for commuting and getting my MTB to the the trailhead. The expression on your face was a mixture of concern and joy - very similar I'm sure of when you are attempting a new feature on the bike. Great Video and good luck with the recovery.
“Ya need new underwear or are you alright?”
Edit: Again with the “Finding absolutely random comments you made months ago”

Very good episode about off-road trail riding. The right air pressure and suspension travel is very important on 4x4 just like it is on a bike. @beepinjeep and @dirtliftstyle
Wow, what a crazy fun adventure. Definitely looked a little stressful at times, but like MTB, if it’s not pushing or thrill‘n us, why bother? Mistakes are likely a bit more costly though.
DUDE!! New to your channel as well as MTB'ng and L-L-L-Love it man. I moved out here to Phoenix for dental school after racing motocross & 4-wheeling my whole life. I certainly needed a replacement for the lack of excitement; therefore, mountainbiking was born in my life!! Many of them are the same people even!
Gotta love windrock offroad park
RIP DOGGO BOY YOU WERE A GOOD BOI
Offroading in the UK has kind of died but it used to be quite a big scene. Really fun stuff and can be quite sketchy. It was a really close knit community too which made it really nice. Typically short wheel base Mitsubishi Pajeros and some other small 4x4's like Suzuki Jimnys. Some have Toyota Surf's, some of which has been Bobtailed. I only ever saw One Jeep offroading, as the others found where I live are a couple rare Jeep Wranglers which aren't offroaded. Tracks in this video are similar to what we have, only ours can be much narrower
just some good old boys. never meanin no harm.....

Great video of some 4wheeling. Also great commentary, you did your homework and knew what you were talking about👍👍
So what’s next... a lift and big tires for the ridgeline?
nick the car guy that thing is too expensive to take off-road. You want an old cj or xj or something. Definitely not a new Jeep though because they are expensive as hell to fix even though Jeep was built off simplicity. New Jeep isn't really Jeep anymore
