  • For 30 years Bowers & Wilkins Nautilus speaker has been a style icon. Something totally different. But everything is about sound, tells the designer Laurence Dickie. He now design speakers that use much of the same principle for Vivid Audio.

    Even assuming that 25 mm throw for the 100 mm driver is combined 2 way excursion , it is still an amazing 12.5 mm Xmax for such a tiny driver . That kind of Xmax is normally only seen in 10 inch and bigger woofers (250 mm and upwards) . A normal 100 mm woofer has an Xmax of just 3 mm .

    • @einarbk885
      @einarbk885 6 месяцев назад

      if you throw money at a small driver you can get lower distortion. most people would just increase the size of the cone. also there can be problems with getting long throw woofers to work higher in freq

      25mm is most likely the xmech, he mention the gap was included.
      so that is 12mm xmax. same as my 10" subwoofer driver.
      and about twice i get out of 5" midwoofers on my main speakers.

    I have had a pair of B&W matrix three since 1987, which I believe correct me if I’m wrong was the beginning of this journey, they still sound as fantastic and true today as they did back then however, I’m sure that overtime my ears would have got used to any changes or Deficiencies . And what would be really nice is to have a view on them and being serviced to make them being as good as they were when they were built, but I don’t know where to go about Achieving this, maybe you have an idea?

    • @carlosoliveira-rc2xt
      @carlosoliveira-rc2xt 6 месяцев назад

      They actually were considered lifeless in their day. They had too much matrix construction with foam. Afterwards, B&W reduced the amount of matrix bracing in their subsequent designs.

    • @print-master
      @print-master 5 месяцев назад

      @@carlosoliveira-rc2xt I get what you say, however, I like the neutrality of the speakers because there is ample room for adding a little colour here and there.
      B&W probably removed some of the foam because they were extremely expensive to make. I’ve never considered them lifeless. They have been a pleasure to listen to for many years and completely non-fatigue, powerful, deeply involving sound.

    This video is about the Nautilus speaker for only 1m.25s. After that, the narrative switches to focusing on the designer of the Nautilus speakers moving on from a B&W and designing different speakers for Vivid. At the end, the designer talks about monitor speakers with only 4" drivers. He tries to convince the audience into believing that they can reproduce bass frequencies due to their long throw capability, even though it is well known that even long throw small speakers are less capable of producing bass than larger speakers.

    • @Stereopluss

    Bafle is too small. Id rarther a big wooden box. Them speakers won't go below much below 30hz. You won't hear the full range. Side by side it with a pair of ditton 66. With an orchestra. And they will crumble like rivita next to the 66's. That go down to 20hz with ease. And breath easy.
