I think Dave would have crushed had he inherited The Tonight Show. Jay was great but with the Tonight Show established, the NBC infrastructure and all of their successful Primetime shows of the 90s and early 2000s that was extremely difficult to compete with.
Carson wanted Letterman too. That's why the transition was so terrible.
