Thank you for being the only video that actually takes cleaning linoleum seriously and doesn't spout a bunch of nonsense about products and methods that obviously do not remove the real yellow stains that we are having trouble with. You won't believe how many videos tackling this dilemma reveal no solutions or miss the point completely and just show someone cleaning some dirt.

Lol.. I tried all that myself last night. I could have saved 2 hours if I had watched this. You are correct leaving the areas open for the sun to fade. I had a laminated wooden floor fade. I've been told by flooring experts, that you should never put rugs on your floor that have the rubber backing. Over time the rubber causes the vinyl flooring to yellow and it's ruined in the spot where the rug was laying. If you have a vinyl floor and want to have area rugs they must have a carpet-like finish on both sides! Any use of a rubber type backing or use of a mat to stop sliding of the area rug will cause your vinyl floor to yellow!

I wanted to leave this comment and hopefully it can help someone else. So none of these items above really worked as you can see at removing a dark blue dye stain on my linoleum floor from my dog food bag. The alcohol and acetone worked best to lighten it but the blue dye was still very noticeable. So while doing some research on cleaning hair dye from bathtubs I found Soft Scrub with Bleach Cleanser (gel version) tried it on my white linoleum floor and it COMPLETELY removed the stained. You just need to leave it on and let it do it's magic. It does have bleach so you need to be careful using it. When I initially put it on, the stain faded but nothing happened. After letting it sit for 20-30 minutes the stain was gone. I am beyond ecstatic because I literally tried everything on all the websites I found.

She recommends 1 tablespoon of baking powder with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. After that putting on a sealer. I tried it and left it on for a bit. The yellow stain has gone so very pleased. I didn't put on a sealer as the whole floor isn't affected.
Vanessa, why are you bothering to say that. Get a life! It was a great video and she WAS cleaning a floor and videoing it. 🤦♀️ uuuggghh comments like yours just show what kind of a person you are.
@@HomesteadingWays I see.. For me its yellow and also it has some white stains cause of the baking powder :/ . Do you think the stains are gonna go out like that? Seems a bit odd to me
Strange. I had the opposite happen. The part of the linoleum covered with a rug for the last 10 years is beautiful and has no stains. The stains are everywhere NOT covered by a rug, presumably from aging.
I just watched a video by a gentleman who I stalls floors He said this yellowing is not only caused by the rubber backing on rugs but hard water and sun. He used and recommended CSL. Spread on tile in small areas at a time, let it set 15 - 20 minutes use a scrubber you might use on pots/pans scrub in small circular motion. It worked for him now to try it on one of my bathrooms and my laundry room. Fingers crossed 🤞
It's called oxidation. Nothing will work as it's bonded with the vinyl now. Cheap rubber wheels, cheap rubber backings on rugs, etc. cause it. You have to replace the floor or paint over it. Sometimes sunlight will get rid of it over time because it can be caused by the sunlight being blocked like in my bathroom with a box one time.
I have this yellow thing around my toilet, is that normal? nothings leaking from under it and its like yellow really yellow on the behind, idk if its the shadow that makes it look darker, but is this linoleum too?
I know I'm ridiculously late to the party, and some has probably already mentioned this. If baking soda / vinegar are useful in other applications, try the baking soda by itself and scrub. Rinse out as much of the baking soda as possible. Then try the vinegar by itself. I never understood why people mix them, because the acid and base immediately neutralize each other and you end up cleaning with water. The longer you let them sit, the less effective they will be because they'll have ample chance to completely neutralize.
If it's lack of UV exposure, you could also buy a UV-C fluorescent light and keep its bluish light on there to accelerate the process. Start with small intervals and go to longer ones. Make sure no one looks at it or shines it on their skin, because it burns and ruins your eyes. It also releases small amounts of ozone. These lights are useful in moderation for sanitizing spaces. Do this at your own risk and take precautions, but it might be worth a try, especially if nothing else has worked.
I tried leaving the bleach on for a few hours , didn't work, I tried scrubbing it with a paste of lemon juice and baking soda, didn't work, I let it sit on a spot and tried again, didn;t work, I tried bar keeper friend powder or liquid. Mr clean didnt work eigther, I think what happened, is the prior owner tried to clean it with ammonia, then they had an untrained dog having accidents on the throw rug, with the throw rugs disintigrating, they are just random yellow spots all over the floor , in no particular pattern, i tried a green scubby, a blue scrubby pad and a white mr clean eraser, thanks for showing us what DOESNT work ;-)
I'm own a floor cleaning and restoration small business and there is no way to remove that as far as I know. It's caused by the breakdown in the latex backing on many small rugs. Just look out when they start to yellow it's time to replace them
Joshua Colantuono Thank you! I didn't think anything would really help it. There are so many products out there saying they can get rid of the yellowing and I kind of wanted to prove it was just a bunch of hype.
Hello. I have a hm that has old linoleum on the kitchen floor that look dirty even after mopping. What can I do to remove those stains until I'm able to replace the flooring?
Baking Soda is only working as a abrasive in this use. The material itself has yellowed. So you need to either use a very fine sand paper,/800, 1000 It will make it dull, and you would see it in certain angles, but if would help get rid of the yellow. BarKeeper may have citric acid in it. Either way, you best bet is Comet with some good scrubbing to have the bleach eat through that top micro layer.
Thank you. I will buy Comet and try that. Have been using Barkeepers Friend on most things, but not working on linoleum. My stain is where there was NOT a rug - just dirty from not being scrubbed regularly. Would that change your method?
The rubber or latex back on rugs do this to linoleum floors. Not that they didn't change their rugs or the sun, the reaction of the backing on the rug to the linoleum itself. Just so you know...
The thing to use according to flooring experts is acetone. That is the same kind of stuff in nail varnish remover. Make sure the room is well ventilated. Think you can get it on Amazon. Not sure. I realise it is a bit late since you posted 7 years ago. You have probably replaced the flooring now or moved. Might be useful info for other people though. Cheers.
I responded to a 911 call where a lady had mixed different cleaners and suddenly couldn’t breathe. She damaged her lungs. Please be careful mixing things together.
Baking powder can make the things even worse in these types of floors. I had a small spot like this and then I added baking powder with vinegar and it just made it worse, now the spot is almost 2 sqm.
@@angelacrew-dothard8302 tried both , didnt help, it actually made things worse. You can use bakind soda only in specific type of floors like tiles for example
I put vinyl tile on my kitchen floor which is turning yellow where the sun hits it, and there's no carpeting? The rest of the floor which is not exposed to the sun is fine? I must admit this yellowing situation or explanation of it not getting sunlight or was covered with a rubber mat is driving me nuts because in my case it doesn't apply. This is a rental so I need to find a resolve or replace the entire floor before I move. Argh!
hi there, i just want to say, i also moved into new home too with yellowing on the kitchen lino.. i have got most of it up, maybe this tip will help you.. as you did, i used baking soda and white vinegar. i left mixture on the stain for minimum of 24hrs. on the dried mixture, gave a splash more of vinegar to dampen down, then using a metal scourer giving plenty of elbow grease... i must admit in the corners is still yellowish, but having seen this video, the sunlight advise has dawned on me... unfortunately for me sunlight doesn't reach the L shape of my kitchen. god luck!
Thanks for posting these tests. These shouldn't even be published as solutions - I had the same experience, going to try dosing my floor with a floodlight.
If you want you coukd try to mix 1 cup peroxide, 3 tbsp baking soda , and a drop of dish soap. Let it sit on the stain as long as needed til gone (3-6 hours not 20 mins ) it works like magic on pee stains on mattresses.
I have the same problem but my spots are red. I bought throw rugs from JC Penny’s and after awhile there were red spots on my vinyl. Ive tried everything and nothing budges it. 😢😢😢
I think I would have to disagree with the linoleum not getting sunlight makes it turn yellow. I just moved and island we had in the house,it never got sunlight and it is completely white like new,all the rest of the linoleum that wasn't covered is what has turned yellow, and it always had sunlight on i. t
Linoleum (Marmoleum is the brand name) is made from natural materials vs. Vinyl mainly from PVC. Linoleum, when exposed to light, its yellow tint would disappear. Not sure about the poor quality ones though. Vinyl however would yellow as it ages; you would need a restorer rather than some kind of cleaner to restore the original color, i.e. if it can be done at all.
you could try black light that produces uv light uv is what fades things normal light isnt as harsh you could put a light in there for a few days and compare that way ... just a thought
I lived in an old building (early 1900's) many years ago. The kitchen floor was linoleum. I don't recall having stains, but I followed my mother's practice of stripping the floor periodically with a wax stripper, then rewaxing. Have you ever tried a wax stripper on this floor? You're using abrasive products which probably aren't good for the lino surface, such as Barkeeper's Friend. Stripping and rewaxing used to be the way everyone treated linoleum. Vinyl flooring has become more common, because most vinyl flooring tiles don't need such special treatment. Thanks for posting your efforts!
It's the rubber backing on the rugs. I have a spot too from previous owners. I think the only solution is replacing the vinyl. Mine has been exposed to sun for 10 years. Still there. :(
Never mix bleach products with baking soda, vinegar or anything else it releases chlorine gas. I know she didn"t mix them per say, but she used the same sponge, which is enough to do it.
Tried Oxy Clean and 35% Hydrogen peroxide in two test spots over night. No change with the Oxy, but the peroxide test spot was significantly lighter. So I put the 35% peroxide in a spray bottle and misted the area for two nights (10-12 hrs) and left a bright white fluorescent light on the area to help with the bleaching process. No abrasive scrubbing to dull the flooring, just mist and wait... works great! 35% Hydrogen peroxide can burn the skin... so, use gloves and keep kids and pets away from treated areas until you mop up the peroxide.
I was wondering if anyone had had luck doing this. It’s the only thing I haven’t tried. Looks like I need to go to the hydroponics shop to get the peroxide. 🙂
Why a 5:08 video to show vinegar and baking soda doesn't work, and neither does bar keeper's friend? Just say "Nothing works. Replace rubber-backed rugs before they begin to break down".
+Homesteading Ways I think I understand what you're saying. You are showing the people that had heard or thought vinegar and baking soda was a good stain remover that it doesn't work. I hadn't heard anything about what works for doesn't work. My search was to find what works to clean linoleum. The title of your video gave me the impression this was a video to help people clean linoleum. Perhaps you could change the title to something like "Testing vinegar and baking soda as a stain remover for linoleum/vinyl flooring".
+JudeCincy I'd like to, but it's a bit long. In the description of the video I explain that I am trying these 'solutions' for the first time. I didn't know ahead of time if they would work or not.
its supposed to but ive never had the same problem as you. i just looked it up because i have paint on my floor and that was easy to remove with alcohol.
You can not get these what people are calling stains out. These are not stains as if you spilled red wine on the floor. This is a chemical reaction cause by a few things, one being the biggest reason for this reaction is the glue that was used to adhere the floor. Most people when buying this type of floor do not purchase the glue that was made by the company that made the flooring and buy shall we say an after market glue and that usually is the number one cause of the brown sport that you see especially if you have carpets with rubber backing on them.
Fascinating discussion on your video! Though the video doesn't resolve the problem, the viewer comments provide many good ideas. I suspect that there are more than one reason the flooring discolors, so each incident of staining may require some study. Sunlight can certainly discolor plastics, some more than others. Rubber backing can also do it--the rubber may be vinyl as well, but another chemical added to maintain flexibility is the culprit. But all this proves that vinyl flooring can hold a new color. If removing the stain is impossible, maybe applying a stain to the entire floor is an option. According to the ehow site, a gel stain will refinish vinyl windows, so it may work the same way on flooring. (Apparently, if you include links in a comment, RUclips will hide your comment from later viewers. So I have removed the link that was here.)
@@barbarahill4767 Vinyl flooring that has been discolored by the rubberized backing on a small rug. An experiment has produced favorable results. A reptile lamp produces UV light similar to the sun, and is capable of lightening a stain. It is a very slow process, requiring months and months to work.
I think that Melaleuca Solumel or straight up Tea Tree oil will work. It will break down the surface which was permanently corrupted. The floor will need a polishing afterward though. ;)
Another, less green, product which might be helpful is Armstrong's New Beginnings wax stripper, followed by Shine Keeper. Happy scrubbing and water trudging ;)
If you mix baking soda and vinegar they just neutralise each other. It would have probably been better to apply a thick paste of baking soda mixed with water, but you will never get instant results with that kind of stain. It comes down to lots of soaking and scrubbing over several days. Acetone might have also been worth a try.
Did you ever get the stains out?
Yes, I did. I took the rugs I had out of the bathroom and in about 2-3 months the stains were gone!

It’s the latex of the bottom of the rugs that react with the linoleum
Why you name your video, cleaning stains from Linoleum/vinyl floor, if you didn’t get anything clean!🙄
Vanessa Perez yes, I probably should have named it differently. I filmed this as I was trying the different methods hoping one of them would work 😮
Vanessa, why are you bothering to say that. Get a life! It was a great video and she WAS cleaning a floor and videoing it. 🤦♀️ uuuggghh comments like yours just show what kind of a person you are.
It's still helpful bc others are chiming in. Lord that's why I don't make YT videos ppl can be so ungrateful. I appreciate you sharing.
Thanks for posting. I was wondering exactly what you did. Now I know. You have taken my suffering away. I really appreciate it.
Lol... you're welcome!
quick and bright works
The spot in my kitchen doesn't really get much sunlight. Would a UV lamp have a similar effect?
If the stain is caused because of a rug just removing the rug will get the stain to go away after a month or so.
@@HomesteadingWays Is it possible to show us how is it after? Since you said it got away
@@Ale-kc7tk sorry, but house was demolished to put a new road in 😔
@@HomesteadingWays I see.. For me its yellow and also it has some white stains cause of the baking powder :/ . Do you think the stains are gonna go out like that? Seems a bit odd to me
@@Ale-kc7tk I'm not really sure.
Strange. I had the opposite happen. The part of the linoleum covered with a rug for the last 10 years is beautiful and has no stains. The stains are everywhere NOT covered by a rug, presumably from aging.
Same here
I just watched a video by a gentleman who I stalls floors He said this yellowing is not only caused by the rubber backing on rugs but hard water and sun. He used and recommended CSL. Spread on tile in small areas at a time, let it set 15 - 20 minutes use a scrubber you might use on pots/pans scrub in small circular motion. It worked for him now to try it on one of my bathrooms and my laundry room.
Fingers crossed 🤞
I cant get my lino clean i used a dtewmer
Try some Lime Away. Worked for my white kitchen sink stained with coffer
i face same problem too
so nobody has solution on this except replace vinyl?
Apparently not. I did notice some lightening of the stains after I stopped using rugs, but that took 2 months. :(
Would this work with hair dye?
You can try...
Mr clean didnt work eigther, I think what happened, is the prior owner tried to clean it with ammonia, then they had an untrained dog having accidents on the throw rug, with the throw rugs disintigrating, they are just random yellow spots all over the floor , in no particular pattern, i tried a green scubby, a blue scrubby pad and a white mr clean eraser, thanks for showing us what
DOESNT work ;-)
+Meep Tee Really tough problem, isn't it?
I'm going to try the Mr Clean Magic Erasor. Saw a RUclips vid on it. It seems to work.
Did the magic eraser work?
Magic eraser did not work for me
Magic eraser didn't work for me. Over time, w nothing on it, it slightly lightened.
Well, you saved me time and money. Thank you.
Hmm I thought the hydrogenperoxide would do something, since they recommend it for bathroom limescale yellowing
Comet takes stains from shower really good. so it might do as well on floor
I've got the exact same vinyl pattern here in New Zealand! Same yellowing but not as dark and no carpet has ever been on it. Thanks for trying.
+Kenneth Kowalchuk Thanks for the kind comment!
Same old vinyl here in Wisconsin, no rugs, yellowish discoloration is driving me crazy. It won't budge and looks like a gross wee stain. :(
Rubber backing on a rug causes that stain... wish I had known before I used one too
Me too..should be a warning label🙁
Learned the hard way too.
Thank you for this video and helping me not waste a lot of time. I think I will just have to replace mine as well.
I have linoleum and there’s just a dark spot that’s come out of nowhere I’ve tried to many times to get rid of it
Oh I seem to be getting that it's in my utility and I'm guessing it's in the sun light
@@minariaz532 it’s horrible I ended up replacing it with a darker colour
The rubber or latex back on rugs do this to linoleum floors. Not that they didn't change their rugs or the sun, the reaction of the backing on the rug to the linoleum itself. Just so you know...
When you put anything rubber on linoleum it turns yellow. Probably bath mats or rugs with non slip rubber bottoms.
I tried what you did it did not work out for me either
The thing to use according to flooring experts is acetone. That is the same kind of stuff in nail varnish remover. Make sure the room is well ventilated. Think you can get it on Amazon. Not sure. I realise it is a bit late since you posted 7 years ago. You have probably replaced the flooring now or moved. Might be useful info for other people though. Cheers.
Pretty sure that would Ruin the linoleum for sure !!
Baking powder and not baking soda??
@@angelacrew-dothard8302 tried both , didnt help, it actually made things worse. You can use bakind soda only in specific type of floors like tiles for example
@@Ale-kc7tk try Whink rust remover and iron out ... something about the protected film on the linoleum and vinyl
Now it's too late. I left the apartment with the vinyl floor :P
Argh!
+Doris Edwards I don't know what to tell you you. Maybe something went wrong in manufacturing?
My girlfriends hair dye is all over my lino I've tried cylit bang cif nail polish remover hair spray bleach but not working
You always have great ideas Sandra.
Thanks!
hi there, i just want to say, i also moved into new home too with yellowing on the kitchen lino..
i have got most of it up, maybe this tip will help you.. as you did, i used baking soda and white vinegar. i left mixture on the stain for minimum of 24hrs. on the dried mixture, gave a splash more of vinegar to dampen down, then using a metal scourer giving plenty of elbow grease...
i must admit in the corners is still yellowish, but having seen this video, the sunlight advise has dawned on me... unfortunately for me sunlight doesn't reach the L shape of my kitchen. god luck!
themrswanda Thank you! I'm going to give it a try :)
Maybe Krud Kutter would work.
The stains are from the artificial rubber backing on your rugs. Laminate and rug chemicals = yellow. I haven't managed to get rid of my stains either.
So sorry!
I think I would have to disagree with the linoleum not getting sunlight makes it turn yellow. I just moved and island we had in the house,it never got sunlight and it is completely white like new,all the rest of the linoleum that wasn't covered is what has turned yellow, and it always had sunlight on i.
t
wish you would take a picture of end result, after you left rugs off for a couple months.
I don't live there anymore. City bought the house and tore it down to put in a road. :(
You just saved me bunches of time. Thanks so much!!!
+Lisa Williams Lol...glad to help!
+Chance H Never thought of that! may have to give it a try!
Thanks for the effort & examples
That's what I would use a stripper! ✌️
It's the rubber backing on the rugs. I have a spot too from previous owners. I think the only solution is replacing the vinyl. Mine has been exposed to sun for 10 years. Still there. :(
Good Shepherd Homestead I think you are right. I sure wouldn't mind some new flooring anyhow! ;)
Never mix bleach products with baking soda, vinegar or anything else it releases chlorine gas. I know she didn"t mix them per say, but she used the same sponge, which is enough to do it.
All those chemicals you put on there I was expecting an explosion 💥
Apparently rubbing alcohol works
Tried Oxy Clean and 35% Hydrogen peroxide in two test spots over night. No change with the Oxy, but the peroxide test spot was significantly lighter. So I put the 35% peroxide in a spray bottle and misted the area for two nights (10-12 hrs) and left a bright white fluorescent light on the area to help with the bleaching process. No abrasive scrubbing to dull the flooring, just mist and wait... works great!
35% Hydrogen peroxide can burn the skin... so, use gloves and keep kids and pets away from treated areas until you mop up the peroxide.
Thanks for sharing that with us! :)
I was wondering if anyone had had luck doing this. It’s the only thing I haven’t tried.
Looks like I need to go to the hydroponics shop to get the peroxide. 🙂
I've heard to make sure you do not use rubber back rugs
Thank you
Why a 5:08 video to show vinegar and baking soda doesn't work, and neither does bar keeper's friend? Just say "Nothing works. Replace rubber-backed rugs before they begin to break down".
+JudeCincy Because sometimes people need to see it for themselves.
Thank you for sharing this.
you're supposed to pour the vinegar on the floor then the baking soda on top and the chemical reaction is what takes off the stain.
I'm not confident that would work, but it's worth a try.
its supposed to but ive never had the same problem as you. i just looked it up because i have paint on my floor and that was easy to remove with alcohol.
How about peanut butter
You can not get these what people are calling stains out. These are not stains as if you spilled red wine on the floor. This is a chemical reaction cause by a few things, one being the biggest reason for this reaction is the glue that was used to adhere the floor. Most people when buying this type of floor do not purchase the glue that was made by the company that made the flooring and buy shall we say an after market glue and that usually is the number one cause of the brown sport that you see especially if you have carpets with rubber backing on them.
I have the same problem. It’s more likely the stain is from dyes or possibly the backing on the rug.
Are we talking about linoleum or vinyl? Are totally different materials, so stains have different causes, Method to remove floor type specific
@@barbarahill4767 Vinyl flooring that has been discolored by the rubberized backing on a small rug. An experiment has produced favorable results. A reptile lamp produces UV light similar to the sun, and is capable of lightening a stain. It is a very slow process, requiring months and months to work.
The yellow stains are from rubber backed rugs. The rubber deteriorates and stains the linoleum
Yep, that's true.
From what I’ve read you need to let the cleaning products set on the floor for 10 minutes before scrubbing it in.
I believe tat is the original colour bcuz twas covered. not yellowing, rest has faded.
I think that Melaleuca Solumel or straight up Tea Tree oil will work. It will break down the surface which was permanently corrupted. The floor will need a polishing afterward though. ;)
Never thought of that.....Thanks!
Another, less green, product which might be helpful is Armstrong's New Beginnings wax stripper, followed by Shine Keeper. Happy scrubbing and water trudging ;)
It's actually because they probably put rubber back mats on the linoleum
If you mix baking soda and vinegar they just neutralise each other. It would have probably been better to apply a thick paste of baking soda mixed with water, but you will never get instant results with that kind of stain. It comes down to lots of soaking and scrubbing over several days. Acetone might have also been worth a try.
I've tried .it lots of things it's a chemical reaction to the rubber backing on throw rugs ...should be a better way
