I like shooting girls fastpitch softball games from the outfield fence of players batting. I sometimes use a three step stool ladder to get above the fence or shoot thru the fence. Great video of tips.
Hi! I have a rebel t6 with a 75-300 Lens. I will be shooting high school baseball at night under lights. I have no clue on lens (reasonably priced lens) or the settings. I’m just a grandmother wanting some decent photos. Please any advise will be appreciated! I get so confused on settings🙈
Mr. Martinez hoping to see you one of these days. Hopefully I get to see you while I try to get better at shooting sports in Kern County. I have watched your videos before and I've seen your GEYF pictures. Hopefully I can up my game someday and take all these tips and make them count.
1. When a lot of parents are watching the game it's usually tough to save my best spot as I am moving around. I get to the game a little early and set up a folding chair or seat cushion either on or in front of the bleachers. Then I can always come back to this spot and have a place to sit and get pictures. Place the chair right up to the fence. 2. I also wear knee pads so that I can kneel for a long time right behind the fence. It is rude to stand up in front when parents are sitting behind you watching from the bleachers. (One parent asked me why I am taking so many pictures of a fence. Haha). 3. You can also get some great pictures as the players are warming up and throwing the ball around before each inning. Otherwise, outfielders may never touch the ball during the actual game.
Would a higher ape rather help with lowlight? Many of our high school games are at night and I really struggle with lowlight. I have a Cannon T3i. I have a Sigma lens 18-300 mm I can’t go lower than F6.3 when fully zoomed. Does that matter?
a lower aperture (like f/2.8) would be better because it allows for more light in the image. I would recommend something like a 70-200 f/2.8 for low light situations
Mr Martinez great video. I'm a novice to photography. I have started to do sports photography mainly baseball shooting high school and travel baseball teams. I had a Nikon 3200, but I just moved up to a Nikon D90. I'm having issues shooting and freezing the shots at night time under the lights. I use a Nikon 18-300 lens. What kind of advice can you give me for shooting sports
Went to a girls softball game today. Brought a 400mm lens. Parked myself in center, first and third way back. Not enough bluring of the back ground. Left handed batters photograph best at third. Also, nice to get runner on first along with the batter at home. Did not get directly on the infield.
I shoot professionally, I have the 70-200 f/2.8 with the 2x extender, this setup is less than the 100-400, plus you have a 1/3 stop of light at you have the ability to control the aperture throughout the focal length starting at f /4. . The 300mm will leave you like meh as it will be too short to get that great pitcher view, and you be using it for shot from 1B to 2B, across the field will leave u just short. At 400 the field will open up, allows you to shoot across the field, from 1B to 3B plus from 1B to CF & RF. Now you will be just short in the power alleys but u can make it happen. Good luck, keep shooting, and don't die......
Hey very nice, I do almost the exact same stuff. Here is my tip on shooting though the fence in daylight, Canon 100-300 USM f4.5-5.6, the front of the lens is small enough to shoot through the fence holes. Another tip I recently saw online would be to have black subdued spray paint and spray the fence where are you going to shoot I haven't tried it yet though. I subscribed. I shoot with Canon x 1.3 cropped APS-H camera, works well but will struggle a little at night games. Peace
Do you think a 135mm f2.8 Has enough reach for baseball? A friend asked me to photograph his team ( kinds team ). It's the biggest lens I own. Crop sensor Sony.
EnVision it's pretty short to cover very much of the field for anything other than tball. for little league you can probably cover the entire infield with and get shots some parents may like. But you probably won't get an award winning shot unless the play happens right in front of you. a 70-200 with a teleconverter on a crop sensor is what I started with and it was never enough reach.
I use a Sigma 50-500mm lens. Not my favourite, but the reach is good. Ideally, I would like to use the Canon 100-400L, but I sold it. Most of my work is indoor, so the 70-200mm f/2.8L was more important for me. My sales aren't the greatest with softball (I also use a 200mm f/2.8L prime)
+CHRIS MCGRADY yes always in AI servo for sports. And with a sport like softball I am constantly making adjustments to my exposure. Here in sunny southern California the expose change a lot depending on who I am shooting. For example the batter may face the sun, but everyone on the right side of the field has there back to the sun. If I expose for the batter, everyone not facing the sun is underexposed. I prefer to shoot in manual mode, but I find myself in aperture priority a lot for softball. You simply done have time to make the adjustments.
haha i would if i could but I'm only 15 so my parents would have to buy the lens for me but i turn 16 this year and can get a job so hopefully soon i will have a better lens
+ItsCeciliaGrace also look at the sigma 70-200 f2.8 if you want to save a few bucks or ( if you have a Nikon) get a used 300 2.8 they shouldn't run for more than 2-3k
also shooting through a fence, throw your lens in manual. and put your hood right up to the fence. it'll blur it out pretty well.
Great idea!

Thanks for the tips! I shoot all kinds of sports and needed a refresher. Very helpful and loved the format.

Great video. Lot of good information.
I have a Canon Rebel t6, can I use a 75-300mm?
Yes I've used that, my work is on @mtruproductions on instagram if you want to reach out
For Nikon, the 200-500/5.6. Relatively cheap and it's great out to 2nd base for high school baseball.
Would you recommend a 70-200 f/2.8 and a 300mm f/4 for baseball I have permission to be in the dugout and anywhere I decided

Thanks a lot! This has answered all of the questions I have had. 😃
Good job Vincent....keep up the videos brother!

thanks for the tip on the fence
Hey another great vid Vincent. Just curious as to whether you shoot raw or jpg or both. Also do you "motor drive"? Thanks for the videos!
Great info. Thanks

Do you make any camera adjustments when the light changes???
You have to in order to get the right exposure off camera. ISO usually goes up if you want high shutter speed or with the aperture wide ooen

would my canon 50mm f1.8 work better
haha i would if i could but I'm only 15 so my parents would have to buy the lens for me but i turn 16 this year and can get a job so hopefully soon i will have a better lens
+ItsCeciliaGrace is there a place where I can see your work

Andrés Felipe Ortiz Morales Si hablamos español, pero nuestro primer idioma es el inglés....
Glass glass glass...
Not a lot of pictures of what he is talking about and a lot of "Southern California " said. again not a lot of pictures to show what he is saying.
Sorry man... As much as I appreciate this video. I have to dislike because that jersey you have on lol #gogiants 👊
Lots of talking. Not well scripted. Short on tips. I'll get to that later.
