  • If you ever just wanted to hang out, please stop by for this loosely edited travelogue. Follow along on the ups and downs and laughs as our catamaran shopping and travel stories start on the beautiful island of Grenada. We then struggle mightily with airline chaos to get back to the US to survey yet another catamaran in Southern California.

You know all your trials finding a boat has convinced me that if I ever get the opportunity to buy one, I am buying new like the Wynns or Nick and Terysa (Ruby Rose). Dealing with current owners when trying to buy a used sailboat is absolutely INSANE. Thanks for publishing the cautionary tale. Even Ben and Ashley from Sailing Nahoa are buying a new custom sailing catamaran!

A word of caution. Do not sail more than striking distance from the manufacturers or dealers during your first year. New boats are often plagued with problems too. Many a rushed Friday arvo job has been found wanting. Also warranty, here is how this works. You need to bring that boat in for repairs (at your expense). The guy that fixes it or the manufacturer are socked in, poor supplies, yard space full etc, etc, etc. So they can only fix your boat in 4-6 weeks. Oh something else goes wrong. Well welcome to the merry go round. You know, the weather is turning, the repair will be $500 if you pay someone and the yard that the dealer does warranty work in will have a spot in 21 days to save you that $500. Meanwhile your next weather window will be late spring. Your visa has 18 days left on it. Example, a $38 part failed on my engine here in Australia. It was not available at all anywhere here. Simple order it from Sweden, it will take 10 days. No problem. I pay the money. 3 weeks later no part. The factory had delays in getting green paint. I said don't paint it. 8 weeks later no part? The part is in Singapore where customs guys will not clear other cargo in the same container. 10 weeks later, I get the part, 2 minutes to install and my engine can be started again. So buying new will not help any of this. Note they didn't paint it. A black part on a green engine. Everyone knows who they are.

I agree with Phil. If you go the new route, plan to spend time cruising in the area where the boat was built. Most builders are well meaning but it is a tough business. So make it easy for them to make things right and you will benefit from buying new.

Your example shows all of us to stick to your fundamental beliefs and knowing what you are after and the parameters you have set - and not being side tracked by life that seems to work against you. And kudos for maintaining your overall upbeat attitude in the face of so many frustrations.. A lesson many of should learn from. The owner's blog revealed many things about the boat that were both unmentioned and / or contradictory to what was portrayed by the seller and his broker. It saved me a trip to Alaska. I just saw a video where they were looking at the Outremer 49.. ...so that one didn't workout? now they're looking at another. the boat search in real time has got to be exhausting... we're spending some of our limited spare time researching for what our boat is going to be so I can only imagine what they are experiencing. New Sub here, great info in your videos! I just saw your more recent postings and glad y'all are doing well!

Great episode, Sailing Shaman of fun. Raw footage very peaceful. If time allows in France, look into bare boat barge canal trips. No scones, croissants. Tour Lagoon factory in Bordeaux or performance cat production line?

Have you found a boat yet? 😊 We are new to sailing and have been watching all your videos!! We’re headed to our ASA101 certification training. 😮 It’s live aboard until Sunday early evening. Hope you are both well and find your next boat! Our plan is when we sell our house, to be live aboard catamaran sailors! Thanks for reading. 😊

Well, count that as another time you guys didn't get suckered into buying a bad boat. It's good you have the knowledge to avoid making a mistake you would regret for years. But with all these misfires, it'll be all the sweeter when the right one comes along. For you...And for us 😀

Everyone wondered why I bought a 50 year old boat. Reason: I knew it needed everything, and now I know the age of and origin of everything on the boat.

Completely agree about the standing rigging situation. When I heard that is t was replaced in 2017 the first thing that popped in my mind was, wait, wouldn't it be slated for replacement soon now that it's 2023? Sure enough several seconds later you said the same thing to confirm my thoughts. I guess you could have bought the boat and waited a year if you weren't planning on doing major cruises with the yacht, but it would still need replacing soon rather than later. Moreover, other things might come to light in that time that need repair or replacement and your maintenance bill can skyrocket fast..

So... I lately had a disappointing attempt to buy a yacht. And I'd known how much trouble you good people have been having, but, somehow, this episode just put it all in perspective for me. Right. I have no complaints. None. I'll keep looking'; it's a process. Thanks. Best of luck to you...

No disrespect here but I'm starting to wonder if your expectations of a used boat might be a little high. Maybe if you guys are able to look at a newer boat you may find what you're expecting. If it's available in your budget.❤❤❤
