one tip for backing a fifth wheel and bumper hitch trailer is to put you hand at the bottom of the steering wheel and then move your hand in the direction that you want the back of the trailer to go.
True, but that is only the beginning of the story and the rest of the story never gets told. Once the back of a trailer (5th wheel or bumper pull) starts to move in that direction if you maintain the wheel in that direction the angle between the trailer and the tow vehicle will continue to change (get smaller) until you jackknife the trailer. Think about how your steer tires are turned when making a turn going forward. Once you have the trailer moving around to the left or right you have to return the wheel to the center or slightly the other way to maintain that radius of turn.
My brother drove 18 wheelers for over 45 years. To relieve boredom, he got so he could knock down road cones with the cab tires, stand them back up with the trailer tires. Keep practicing!!☺
Good job guys. Phil, a trick I learned when driving big rigs was to steer from the bottom of the steering wheel. From the bottom to make the tail turn left you push the wheel left, two go right push right. That way you don't have to remember left to go right and right to go left which is what you have to do when you steer from the top. But great job.
Hey Chad, that was one of the best and simplest explanation to understand how to maneuver a fifth wheel, "Think of the whole truck as the front wheels of the fifth wheel trailer". That is fantastic!,!!!!!!!!!!!
I can’t believe this channel doesn’t have a million subs yet. I’ve been dealing with multiple deaths in the family. Most recent was my mom on the 6th of this month and I’ve just been tuned out of so much. So it’s my first time back on your channel in a few months and I’m shocked to be honest I never looked at the sub count. You guys are some of my favorite youtubers. Keep up the great work, be safe and huge blessings to you all. Go Navy!
It all depends on what you get used to. I've been towing trailers for 50+ years, starting with pulling a hay wagon with a tractor on my grandpa's farm when I was a kid and currently tow a 24+ foot boat trailer at least several times per week, so pulling and backing a trailer has pretty much become second nature. That being said, I'm sure there would still be a learning curve pulling a 5th wheel since the pivot point is in a different location. The first time I got behind our "new to us" Class A, however, it was a TOTALLY different experience and harkened back to my days as a bus driver when I was in high school (and, yes, high school students driving the school bus was a real thing back in the day!). It quickly became second nature after the first several thousand miles. I have to agree with Phil that the ability to grab something to eat or drink, or go to the bathroom without having to stop at a restaurant or rest area is FANTASTIC!!
We tow a 31' 5th wheel with a 2019 Ford F350 single rear wheel axle. We very seldom have trouble driving in traffic, going into parking lots, fuel stations and rv sites. When we had our 30' motorhome, it was different. The motorhome moves as one unit and challenging to manipulate/articulate when in tight spaces. You just have to get the experience behind the wheel to get comfortable.
Great job!! The best advice my husband gave me was if I want the fifth wheel to go right turn the truck wheel left. So if you need right turn left and if you need left turn right. It’s so confusing but every time I park I say it over and over lol AND just act like the 20 people yelling about what you need to do are not there lol the first time I parked the fifth wheel I had my husband, park manager, other campers...trying to help and I seriously got so confused! My husband just told me to imagine it was just me and him there and it went so smooth!
“I gotta get it perfect” It’s a military thing. Civilians wouldn’t understand the overwhelming compulsion for perfection and how we all got that way. Most of us anyway. Love it when my favorite channels collaborate. Your two channels are at the top of my my short list. Love the Cousin Eddie dance!
my first experience driving our pretty new-to-us 24" class C.. last year end of June going through a mountain pass - somewhere. I was complaining about Hubster's sight-seeing while driving.. he pulled over and told me to drive. Um. OK. no problem. Loved it. Then it started snowing.. then visibility went waaaay down... a great trial by fire! now I have no worries.. and getting ready for my first solo trip! Great video and as always - great content! Best to you in getting to your goals!
I recently upgraded from a TT to a 5th wheel. I'm still intimated by my 5th wheel rig, but one statement has made an impression with me. It's "The whole truck is the front wheel of a 5th wheel". Very good observation, and it settles a lot of this confusion I've been having. Love both your channels!
Phil, the facial hair is on-point....crisp and distinguished. Thank you, to both couples, for being so generous with your rigs, to each other, for our benefit. This was wonderfully educational and entertaining.
Hello to my two favorite RV travel RUclipsrs. I have a video suggestion when the four of you are back together. I think both of the gentlemen are former military, I think both Navy. I think many of your followers would like to hear a camp fireside chat on both your individual military careers. Both formal and fun and serious stories. And maybe talk about how each other’s military positions interacted and relied on each jobs in terms on how our countries military performs as required and expected. Just a thought. Thank you both for your service. ❤️🇺🇸👍.
"The whole truck is the front wheel of the vehicle." Hands down the BEST statement ever on towing a 5th wheel. I recently upgraded from a travel trailer to a 5th wheel. Driving away from the dealership was the first time I ever towed a 5th wheel, so I was nervous and watched as many youtube videos as I could. I then practiced for hours in an empty parking lot. You're one statement is better than anything else anyone has said.
Great job. We keep meaning to go to that abandoned Walmart so I can test drive our 5th wheel.. We're not far away. Love the drone shot of the traffic circle. Glad those were recently completed for you guys 😁
We really enjoyed watching this video! We admire Phil for facing his fears and he was actually pretty good at it! We want a fifth wheel one day but are probably going to start out with a travel trailer at first!
We had a fifth wheel toy hauler for years when we were motorcycling and loved it. We are into Jeeping now and have bought a Tiffin Phaeton 44OH and tow the Jeep. We love it. Both have ups and downs. One is not better that the other its just ones preference. Happy Days.
LOL, we are pulling a 27 ft Front bedroom Airstream and we keep going back and forth about the drive and learning the way we travel. You guys are great and info very on target. Love you, and forgive for being Navy, from Air Force and Army
I drove our 29 foot Class C for the first time this summer with my husband on a trip to Yellowstone from WV. Learning to drive something that big is stressful at first. Now I love it.
Great video - so nerve wracking having someone else drive your home! Couldn't tell who was more nervous in both videos, the owner or the driver! Thanks for sharing.
with a 5th wheel/pull behind, use the bottom part of the steering wheel. then you will turn the wheel the same as the direction you want your trailer to go. try it. it works. Go left -->turn bottom of the wheel left. Go right --> turn the bottom of the wheel right.
@@Milesco well, on travel days the Class A hands down but while sitting we like them both, maybe the 5th wheel a bit more. Because we sit a little longer now after 8 years on the road not having belts, hoses, seals and such sitting is a huge plus for the 5th wheel. Yearly maintenance fees so far have been less with the 5th wheel also.
As a single, senior woman who is about to go on the road with a 29 foot fifth wheel alone, I Loved this video and all its practical tips plus showing someone who is brand new to tell him the fifth wheel. I love the respect the teacher gave his student. I had just watched another video where Husband was teaching his wife and it was a whole different story. He would’ve made anyone nervous to learn because he kept saying how he hated relinquishing control to her and how stressed he was. He was so busy talking about his experience that he didn’t understand that he needed to focus on her, her learning, and her stress. I would love to see more videos, showing women learning to take an equal active role. It would really help me out. I have 30 years of experience, putting my ski boat in and out of the water and I am usually the only woman doing it. You learn a lot just by doing it, but it can drive you crazy if you’ve got someone stressed sitting next to you making unnecessary comments! Come on guys… Her up the women and give a role model to your young sons and daughters that this is a possibility. Let’s work for equal partnership please. Someday your wife may be all alone and still want to enjoy the RV life. I should know.
Now that’s funny, two of my fav channels at the same time and both Navy guys...GO Navy. We have had both Class A and 5th. I like stopping to eat and the inside of the rig is cooled off, also the family gets to relax, watch tv and sleep in the bed going down the road (motorhome). I did enjoy the family being inside the truck and I think it was easier drive and you didn’t get the rattle of all your stuff going down the road (5th). Both types have their benefits.
Wow, my favorite couples in the same video, this was really cool! Easy Phil, 5th Wheel is more complicated, but you are a great driver! Hugs from Brazil!
What a great idea for this video. Would like to see this comparo with a smaller travel trailer (not a 5th wheel) and a class A gasser coach. Great job!
I was getting caught up with Changing Lanes and this episode came up next. I had to finish their episode and I popped over to your channel. Oh boy now I have another channel to start watching. We are weekend warriors up in New England but I really hope to run into you folks in some of our longer travels. Stay safe.
Love watching two of our favorites together! We are about to make to the change from a travel trailer to a fifth wheel. We keep hearing it’s easier. Can’t wait to find out!
Just starting this journey...probably about 5-7 years out. Purging has begun! A 5th wheel is definitely what we are going to do so this was VERY helpful to watch! Thank you guys for all of your tips and tricks!
Last year I went from a 23' bumper pull to a 40' 5th wheel. It was a little intimidating at first, but now I can just wipe around. Never driven a class A. So long as you are having fun and making memories, that's all that matters. Thanks to my 2 favorite youtube couples. Have a wonderful new year. 2021 will be the year for fun trips
Hand on the bottom of the wheel, turn in the direction you want the trailer to go. Follow that rule and you will always be successful. I know you guys had a wide open area with cones, but it's always a good practice to have your significant other on the blind side with a radio or cell phone (and cell phones can have a short delay) watching for clearance. Some of the engine noise in that environment is the fan clutch engaging. Our 2017 F350 towing a 40ft Montana will pretty much roll off at idle on a level area. Great fun for all of you. Looking forward to Changing Lanes video!
I definitely enjoyed seeing you team up with another one of my favorites "Chad & Tara" at Changing Lanes, and what a great topic! Swapping types of rigs and telling us how it felt to drive the other, from your own experiences. I sincerely enjoyed this video! Thanks for sharing guys!
Looks like you will be hitting that 100K mark any day now. I have never towed a 5th wheel, but I have towed a lot of commercial trailers that had goose neck hitches, so I imagine it will be similar enough to be comfortable with it. The sheer size of those Class A's is intimidating, but after seeing this, and Changing Lane's video, it might be easier than I think it is. Great idea the two channels had to do this, very good information.
That’s exactly what I thought too! Chad was incredibly generous to let Phil drive his home around like that! I’m not sure I would be willing to do that.
Enjoyed the video! We’re actually getting ready to sell or trade in our 5th wheel for a class A. Phil is right, there is more things to pay attention to when backing up a 5th wheel. My wife and I are looking to gain the perks that you mentioned of owning a class A. Keep up the good work!
Dear God!! Thank you both of you guys! I'm about to pick up my first 5th wheel and drive it. Both of you couples are people that I watch ALL THE TIME!! I just love you guys! I hope I get to meet you on the road someday!
THANK YOU for doing this. I have wondered what it was like driving a 5th wheel. We have owned three RV's and a small travel trailer. We are trying to decide between a Super C, a Class A, or a 5th wheel.
Great video. I personally would rather pull 5th wheel over driving a class A, 5th wheel bends and get into places easier. Great info, thank you for sharing 👍
Lol!!!! It was great watching Phil drive the truck and trailer. You two remind me so much of Mr. incredible and Elastigirl from the incredible movies. Awesome video.

Yes it is hard to drive a 5th wheel. Its a whole lot easier just to pull it with a nice pickup truck. That's what we do.
Right you are. But this is more searchable.
I was going to say it would a little hard without a motor
You know that went right over the heads of a lot of people 🤣😁
Ba-dum-tshhh! 🥁

Yeah, that's my biggest fear when I eventually get a 5th wheel -- not backing it up, per se, but doing it front of an *_audience!_* 😬
People love to watch lol
I really came here to learn, but at 3:15 I can't stop watching the dog. So, good luck Phil!
The two best RV couples on the road today. I've learned so much from both of you thank you so much for all your hard work.
Wow, thank you!
So Phil....I am super impressed with your first 90 degree back in! Be very proud!
You and me both...LOL
Two for the price of one! Two favorite RUclipsrs! Thanks for the video. Can't wait until Sunday's release by Changing Lanes.
Our pleasure!
#1 takeaway from this video -- both gentlemen checked egos at the door. I am glad I found your video. I learned a lot. Well done.

Love your new intro 👍 Philz done did a good job, especially backing. If it were me I probably would have knocked down every 3rd cone - lol.
Thanks Linda! 👍
Seemed as though Daisy was keeping an eye on Phil , so cute. Take care y'all
She could sense the fear!!!
Thanks, Dale. As of this reply, we are 86 subs away from 100K! I thought the same thing about the 5th wheel.
When Phil started driving Chad’s rig, it was Chad that looked more nervous. Great video guys.
I would be, too! 🤯
That’s exactly what I thought too! Chad was incredibly generous to let Phil drive his home around like that! I’m not sure I would be willing to do that.
Great collab!! Loved seeing the different reactions!!
Good luck!
Great video! Love seeing both rigs and the comparison and you guys all together!
Dear God!! Thank you both of you guys! I'm about to pick up my first 5th wheel and drive it. Both of you couples are people that I watch ALL THE TIME!! I just love you guys! I hope I get to meet you on the road someday!
Our pleasure! We do too, Cindy!
THANK YOU for doing this. I have wondered what it was like driving a 5th wheel. We have owned three RV's and a small travel trailer. We are trying to decide between a Super C, a Class A, or a 5th wheel.
Glad it was helpful!
Y'all are so fun to watch.
Such a fun video. Loved watching you all. But honestly, the dog was amazing! Thanks!
So much fun to watch! That's my hometown so I know exactly where you were. Wish I was there too!
Glad you enjoyed it
@@todayissomeday I was really hoping Phil would have liked it enough for you guys to get one.
Now that was awesome information, great video from all angles and how fun is it to visit another channel. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Once again I love the combined informational videos that’s awesome. I follow both of your channels and both are wonderful.
Awesome! Thank you!
