All of Joseph's living relatives would also have had to make the same trip, so there may have been a significant number of people in the stable that night; not to mention how soon the inn was full and how many people came after Joseph and Mary. But none of those people, however many existed, add to the story that needed to be told about that night. I am thinking that the gold represents Jesus and our divinity (we are more than this body), the frankincense represents the Human experience with ups and downs, and the pain we go through as humans.
