Dude all his shit is so hard to play lol the dude is amazing on guitar
And the fact that he's the ONLY guitar player in VoM (correct me if I'm wrong... my history on Veil is a lil' rough) and he uses a loop pedal WHILE playing those crazy-ass riffs blows my brain. He's like Baard Kolstad (Leprous drummer) levels of insanity in terms of "djent" guitarists... up there with the legendary Tosin Abasi for sure!
On an unrelated note, I saw VoM perform in the Brandon Butler days @ Heavy T.O. 2012 and the wall of death was still one of the most insane pits I've ever seen--just mental! Blew my teenage brain apart at the time.

They've been around since 2004. All Things Set Aside is still a sick EP. Came out in 2006.
The entire discography is awesome but all things set aside is my favorite veil of Maya album. I love the black metal influence on it.
YES all things set aside on mushrooms was the song that hooked me on veil for the past 12 years.

While I haven't heard a ton of their other stuff, All Things Set Aside is absolutely killer.

Dude. I've been listening to veil of maya since 2010. I have all their albums, I remember when I first heard Punisher, and just the whole Eclipse album reminded me of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. So every time I listen to Eclipse I watch Ghost Rider and I listen to Archspire as well.

Marc Okubo has kept his tuning pretty consistent throughout the years with a few variations recently, all on a 6 string. Great work playing those riffs!
Honestly though, Sumerian Records had some of the best modern metal bands and I can tell a lot of the bands on the label influenced Andrew's guitar playing style

You did a great job dude! It's so weird I just picked up my guitar again yesterday and remembered how awesome the guitarist is, and re-learning how to play it's not safe to swim today. The damn thing is ridiculous, Mark Okubo is unbelievable. It's great that they really stepped up the melody and songwriting in the most recent album though, the other ones are great but kind of all over the place.

When I saw the notification I just said to myself, "Is he crazy?" Because Mark Okubo is an insane player and as you said at the start, this was one of the hardest guitar riff evolution videos you have done. Although, you did an amazing job dude!
As I sit here refurbishing/building pc's, I try to have something on in the background eg music, lectures on history, astrophysics and shit like that. Your "Guitar Riff Evolution" vids are the only ones that I drop my tools for and end up getting out my chair - glued to the 60 something inch TV hanging off the wall and headbanging. \m/ \m/ THANK YOU. IMO their old stuff is better than the current stuff; the guitar work was ridiculously technical and completely in "their" lane. A lot of the metalcore bands from the late 2000s seem to have become kinda cookie cutter versions of eachother, where they all still have heavy, drop tuned riffs (and most of them now using lower tunings or 7/8 strings) but most now also have very "pop" choruses and little to distinguish one from another stylistically/ within the riffs themselves. I am completely aware that this is going to come off like I'm one of those nostalgia trippers who thinks everything in the past was better than it is now, but this is one of the few areas where I hold this sort of opinion.
@@NewbPhil I agree and don't see it as simply nostalgic "those were the days" thinking, when they changed vocalists their sound became a lot more cookie cutter like a lot of other metalcore bands, perhaps to compliment the clean singing. Their older stuff is technically far superior IMO as well, I still listen to it regularly.

I love VOM and always will. The only albums of theirs I physically own are The Common Man;'s Collapse and ID. TCMC is seriously just an insane album and even though the production is kinda whack still holds up today. Been fortunate enough to see them live, once at Warped and once at a smaller venue. You crushed this riff compilation man!

I've been listening to Eclipse for memories and because Winter is coming soon 😉 I loved False Idol, ID, and I can't wait for the new album.
