  • Aloha!
    Diagnosis of a 1996 Toyota 4Runner 4x4 with a 3.4l V6 and standard transmission. The truck would crank but was not able to start.
    Symptoms:
    The truck began running rough and hesitating.
    Over time the truck would intermittently not start.
    The truck ended up not being able to start at all.
    Check engine lamp (MIL) not on.
    Scan tool unable to communicate with Electronic Control Module (ECM)
    Follow along with the step by step diagnosis and repair using basic mechanics hand tools. We will actually open up the ECM and poke around in it's guts! Oh what fun!
    You can do this.
    Mahalo and E komo Mai!
    Maverick Mike Kauai.

    You saved me a bundle. I ran a compression check, changed the plugs, plug wires and coils. New injectors. New fuel pump. New fuel filter. New fuel pressures regulator. New cam position sensor. New crankshaft position sensor. New timing belt (including water pump and tensioner with pulleys). New valve cover gaskets, New intake gaskets. Allowed the idle to "relearn". Still had PO300 P0301 P0305 MISFIRE CYL 1 AND 5. Every time I changed a part I ran a scan. ECM had a burnt corner just like yours!!!!!

    C406: C stands for Capacitor. It is an electrolytic one and has probably spewed its contents onto the bottom corner of the board. You can probably just replace it and have a good spare ECM.

      Good thought. Not my vehicle and I think the old one was probably sent back for a core

    Did you say you bought a USED one or a NEW one? What did it cost?
    D406 is a diode. If you look closely, you will see a cold solder joint.
    D = Diode
    C = Capacitor
    R = Resistor

      I believe it came from the same year/spec 4 Runner so it ran fine, did not have any issues.

    Where did you order the ECM from? How much was it?

      Aloha Bobby,
      Sorry but the owner of the vehicle procured the ECM so I don't have that information. But I do remember that he purchased a used one.
      Try some junk yards or places that rebuild ECM's.
      Mahalo,
      Mike
