    Very informative 🙏🏻 I have a 2013 Tucson with the same issue were the AWD light turns on when the car goes through any slippage. The coupling was worn out.

    My SF 2013, 90 000km had the same issue. I contacted the Hyundai Czech and complained about the quality, I was told to visit their dealer and ask for Godwill, the the price of the repair was set to 4 000 USD and they offered to pay 3 100 USD by them.

    We are a group of hyundai santa fe owners with a total of 37 person , and we all have the same problem with the 4WD system , and all of us with odo meter below 150,000 KM be cause hyundai are making the worst Transfer Case ever , this problem should be fixed by hyundai for free only if we all sent a mail to then complaining about this problem. !

    its usually the awd drive coupler that mounts on the front of the rear differential that goes out they go out often that runs the awd if you ever experenced cling or skiping turning corners

      @@newfietrucker1967 ya i dont wanna tell ya what it is but i will i replaced the back one wasnt it then i bought a transfer case that wasnt it both easy to replace n heap on ebay the problem with these the female spline in the transmission strips out or rounds off from the male spline from transfercase which only way to fix is new trans from kia i was quoted 2800 installed you can still drive it but youll only have front wheel drive

    This is very common happened to mine twice and my brothers also. It’s the transaxle and transmission. The teeth around the transmission that grabs the transfer case pinion gets stripped. You’ll need to rebuild or replace the transmission.

    The couplers go bad quite often. If you hear a loud popping noise or feel like something is binding in the rear end when turning it is probably the coupler.

    Probably a stripped out transfer case gear. It’s typical on these I’ve seen this happen several times.weak parts!

    The splines are stripped in the transfer case mounted on the back of the transmission. Usually would only occur if vehicle is operated in awd under a severe load.

      @@DrLoveQc These are fwd until wheel slip is detected - so yes, the OP is completely correct. If it engages while under a decent amount of torque, farewell to the splines

    do the older 2007-2012 Santa Fe's have this issue as well? Do they use the same part # of transfer case bolted to the transmission?

    Hola , Santa Fe AWD es tracción en las 4 ruedas siempre , constante , nunca se desconecta , el botón de bloqueo de ruedas es para dejar bloqueada las ruedas trasera , sin movimiento , tiene un sistema que bloquea el movimiento de las ruedas trasera para dejar inmóvil en carro , si se acciona y se trata de mover se forzará al sistema de tracción trasera y también forzará a la caja de transferencia . La caja de transferencia en muy delicada , tiende a tener problemas con los años , debe reemplazarse o repararse , si el diferencial trasero tiene problemas , desconecte el eje que conecta de adelante hacia atrás , y quedará solo en tracción delantera , si tiene problemas en la caja de transferencia , debe repararse o cambiarse , por qué provocará otro problema al diferencial de la transmisión .

    Same problem with my 2012 kia sorento awd.. the gear going to the transmission to the transfer case.. fix solution in my case is I had to buy a used transmission problem solved.

    Hi, am so glad I came across this video! My SantaFe 2014 (India) has been having a very similar issue for a while. There is absolutely no light/error on dash console or on OBD scan, however, my hunch was 4wd was not working as I kept on getting stuck in sand/mud etc. This time I pushed the Hyundai ASC to investigate beyond scans, and recently they confirmed there is an issue and they have told me a very similar reason (am not tech expert) as mentioned in your video. If this is a known issue with SantaFe I wonder why have they not recalled; and if I can push them for a replacement irrespective of whether the car is still in warranty or not!!
    Please do share links for further solutions, and if there are any forums where I can take this up please?

      Recalls are only for parts related to safety. Failure of other parts is only covered until warranty runs out. In situation like this what should be done is class action lawsuit where all owners are suing Hyundai for it at once

      Transfer case splines issue. Transfer case had to be replaced. Get your vehicle physically inspected at ASC for what’s exact issue with yours.

    Does the Tucson uses the same system? I have that problem, but when the wheels are spining in a slippery surface, the light "4WD failure" comes on...

    I discovered this at 90,000km on my Santa Fe. Totally stripped transfer case. Thankfully Hyundai covered the parts bill ($8k) and I only had to pay labour (still expensive)

    when you spun the rear wheel why didn't the wheel on the other side of that diff spin the opposite way? That is what my second gen AWD CM Santa Fe does.

    If the problem is with the transfer case at the transmission, once you drop the driveshaft could you then turn the driveshaft by hand to make the rear wheels turn? Just to eliminate possible gear failure in the rear drive components.

      You would need to turn the key on and engage the AWD lock. This is because the H-Trac system Hyundai/Kia uses engages with a hydraulic coupler that is mounted in front of the rear differential. Under normal driving, the PCM and ABS modules use the ABS wheel sensors to determine wheel slippage and engage the AWD on the go

    I had an issue with the rear differential, clunking noise, diagnosed as the coupler. Guy disconnected the viscous coupler electrical supply, mean they car is now only front wheel drive until I can get parts. The issue in this video could be an electrical issue where the viscous coupler cable had become disconnected or broken?

    Mine is 2016.I have same issue but I got an icon on the dashboard light all wheel drive mulfuction.

      That will happen if you go over terrain where the 4wd tries to engage. The sensors will see that the rear wheels aren't responding and it with Ding the AWD fault light at you

    How'sit going I've got a 2014 Hyundai Sante Fe elite I have jack the car off all four wheels off the ground and then put it into drive 1 front and back spins but makes a weird sounds and ends up being just the front driver wheel spinning nothing else .

    This is an old video posting but I’m wondering g if you figured out if the spines were stripped in the transaxle final drive and the transfer case input shaft. I have the same problem but I bought the car used and can’t tell what damage is done prior my ownership. Did you post a follow up video on the further diagnosis and repair or was it never repaired ? If it was repaired did you need to remove the transfer case to determine that both splines were stripped ? Thanks

    dealershop's mechanic told me that my 2013 santa fe's transfer case may need to be replaced, and very possibly, as well as the transmission!! he said the defected transfer case is possibly damaging the transmission all the time while i drive the car and it's very dangerous to use the car now.. im like.. how did this happen all of a sudden..

    i am glad i watch your video.the Issue with my santa fe 2014 3.3L (UAE) is when reversing, an abnormal sound under the car is heared like a banging sound.(bloggg).so i went to the service center.and they diagnosed as transfer assembly problem that costs around 2450USD alone plus the differential assembly that costs around 350 USD.plus oil, bushings etc plus labor which costs a lot.my concern is i never use my AWD.how come it was broken.thank you very much.hoping to hear from you.and i am waiting for your next video about the transfer assembly replacement.many thanks

      what happened to your car? i have my santa fe 2014 3.3 also here in UAE, and the issue is when turning left or right abnormal sound coming from the rear end like (tog tog tog) and jerking..

      @@daryllacerna801 hi bro.after that , i did nothing.I believe they found the problem when they opened the assembly, i'm sure they opened it because they told me that there were two teeths broken , not sure which part of the assembly. I told them that i don't have budget at the moment for more than 10K AED. Since i can still use the car w/o using the 4WD, they just fixed it back.Fortunately until now, the sound issue was gone. That issue was only when reversing.Thankfully it's gone

    On a Hyundai, does the AWD locking switch function as a switch for FWD and AWD?

      The AWD is automatic when the vehicle senses the front wheels slipping. The 4x4 lock manually locks the front wheel drive to rear wheel drive, acting as 4wd. FYI, it's only supposed to be used when driving in snow or mud etc, not to be used on dry pavement

    Is there any way to bypass AWD and just make it front wheel drive? Can I pull a fuse etc so I dont need to fix the transfer case?

      This just happened to my car the other day, away from home. A mechanic took the propeller shaft off and it’s a FWD only. Simple job, 10 bolts to remove.

    So i went to the snow this past weekend and my front wheels only spin even when i engage awd on my 08 santa fe 6cylinder.... Do u think this is the issues and they're is no weird noises or vibrations

      It probably is . Known issue with Santa fe. Put it on stands, engage diff lock and make sure all 4 wheels spin in the air

    I bought a second hand 2014 Kia sorento, V6, 3.3.., 187k kilometers done..my cars engine blown I replaced (2k usd spent)with a used nice engine, next problem started when 40 speed to down 20 speed click, clock sound ..I gone to the mechanic they suggested to change the gear box😮 2k usd..I am in a dilemma..

    my 2012 sante fe has an issue with the rear end. sometimes when starting off and turning, the rear end acts locked.. the tires will shimmy, and then a big clunk. i assume at that point, the differential lock snaps out. any thots how i can cure this?

      You will need to figure out if it's an issue with the differential, or the transfer case. The one with the issue will need to be replaced

      It’s actually the transmission. The teeth gets stripped that turns the transfer case and in turn makes the awd rear wheels turn. They really need to put out a recall on that

    hi did you ever figure out the issue? i have a 2015 santa fe which has a clunk and a jolt when reversing. car has 95 k miles and i just bought this from a private party who claimed there was no issue.sometimes it makes the noise some times it doesnt but after the noise it drives fine. Had amechanic put it on a lift and there is play in the driveshaft when turning it back and forth.We didnt check 4wd operation though. Any suggestions? thanks

      Sorry , no I never found out. Took it to 2 shops and both said just drive it as it was intermittent and didn’t have any grinding sound. It was out of warranty because I’m the second owner so, no way I was going to Hyundai for their crazy prices for repairs and diagnostic disassembly costs. Have you had any inspections done on it? I’ve been carefully driving it and in the cold it hasn’t done it in several months but , I’m sure it will return .

    You're a mechanic???????????? All 4 wheels have to be on the ground for this system to operate............it's about torque transfer which cant happen unless torque is detected at front wheels first. Put it over some gravel and have someone watch as you gas it and you'll see all 4 wheels powered up. Good luck.
