The video is wrong and misleading, confusing the EU group "The Left" with "European Left", which is a small part of it. The main part is "Now the People", which includes Sinn Fein (IR), PTB (BE), Podemos (ES), LFI (FR), Die Linke (DE), Sinistra Italiana (IT) and many others.

Honestly, defence spending isn't the issue, the real issue is having 27 different militaries with 27 voices pulling in all directions, not to mention all the duplications and waste it gives.
Even at current spending, a single EU military would be far more effective over what we have, but I do think boosting spending to 2% across the EU is needed with all the political instability that's going on around the world

@@potato_nuggetThe problem is, where Europe lacks behind in innovation are quite critical parts of the economy.
Look at software for example. The biggest companies are all American and hold substantial influence in our own economies as well. Complacency will eventually lead to bankruptcy for most companies, all it takes is one gold rush to a new (working) technology.
Europe is still in a great spot economically speaking, but sacrificing innovation for comfort is only going to hurt the economy in the long run. Don’t get me wrong I don’t want to erode good labour conditions for technology’s sake. It’s possible to have acceptable labour conditions while being competitive at the same time. The biggest example is Airbus, a successful multinational European corporation that is outcompeting Boeing. (Even if with heavy subsidies)
But the thing is, companies like that take years to build and we can’t afford to fall behind the USA and China. The reason why they manage better than us is simply that they’re more centralised than the EU and more united culturally.
Reforming the EU is critical if we want to address Europe’s fall from glory. It’s the only way to thrive in a world that increasingly disrespects the European nations.

I find myself being mostly left wing when it comes to the environment, social and economic issues but most left wing parties have this really utopian thinking when it comes to Russia and being so pacifist to the point where its just dangerously and irresponsibly naive. As well as on immigration. Like obviously I don't wanna see children drown in the Mediterranean but Europe also just can't take in all the misbegotten souls of the earth. It just doesn't work like that. I think refugees fleeing war should be taken in as is required under int'l humanitarian law but I don't think that economic refugees should just be unconditionally let in.
Also, when it comes to debates on immigration reform, one big issue is that there are many people here who's request has already been denied but the repatriation process just takes so long. Again, this concerns people who are not staying anyway. Also, I think we should be way stricter when it comes to asylum seekers or refugees who commit crimes while their applications are being processed. There should be a zero tolerance policy for that. If you come to another country, seeking their help and refuge and expecting to be accommodated and then you choose to act criminally, you have immediately lost any right to hospitality.
How often has it now happened that there was a terror attack and then it gets reported that authorities already had a criminal file on them but didn't act before it was too late? I am all for humanitarianism, but every place has a right to shield themselves from legitimate threats. Europe doesn't owe anyone anything who can't even do the bare minimum in terms of respecting the law and culture of the place they're in.

It's beyond me why I hear so much about "down with the military" from the EU Left while I haven't yet spotted something sane regarding the military in any of the manifestos (and just saying we need more and better equipped army is only a bit more sane than saying no army...).
Why can't any of EU parties write down:
We want EU wide mandatory conscription army for both men and women alike just as we want mandatory elementary school for everyone.
The reason why we want that is because it promotes physical activity (less obesity), self defense (more leveled anti bullying playing field), better stress tolerance (as you can't escape stress later in life when you fall into the labor market anyway), improved anger venting (as current culture of pretend non-conflict mindset just increases backstabbing behavior and rage explosions instead of gradual gentle venting) and better inclusiveness (as only professional army attracts too many half baked "in need of money only" and/or "extremist thoughts" people which can form more volatile cults and thus more chance for conflict.
Such a society would deter non EU nations from even thinking about invasions here and there like they do now.
And we wouldn't allow things such as conscientious objectors for wiggling themselves out of the training... They can object to going to war and be conscientious objectors at that point without consequences but they can't object to training.
And how would we fund it?
In the past you had to use the army so it wasn't a failed investment and exploit foreign lands...
But in reality that's not feasible as using the army only costs and gives you a lot of PTSD individuals which are bad for development.
Instead we'll use this conscript army even in peaceful times instead of fire fighters (each trainee would become a mandatory firefighter with less salaries needed for professional fire fighters which would be greatly reduced), instead of construction workers, instead of garbage collectors, public sector such as school cleaners and handyman helpers etc. as those would be experiences that are needed for poor and rich kids alike - as part of basic education. And the money for paying for all of this goes towards the military instead. (This way we can fill the "less desired" jobs with ever new conscripts that in return get broader understanding of what is actually needed for their comfortable life).
Besides that all the scholarships would be granted only through military so that's two flies with one stone.
In addition all the technology development grants would go through military so bleeding edge tech development would be well funded once again.
And because of all of that the professional armies all over EU could shrink so less salaries there...
And STEM education would also go through the army so the universities would once again be well funded.
In return the private sector would get better qualified (mental and education wise) workforce which would attract even more high tech companies to EU.
With that EU would once again be able to develop domestic military and civilian high tech so military procurement would no longer be a money drain but instead job creator as we'd procure domestic products and not foreign imports.
So indirect funding would cover most of the expenses while not taking away but instead even enlarging the budgets for STEM sectors while keeping the culture sectors with the same or slightly better funding (because of all the extra funds generation mentioned above) as today.
But no... Military is the boogeyman and a bad bad thing... And that "logic" gives rise to people such as Putin, the left and the exploiters... Logic of the population living inside EU...
Would be nice if any of the EU wide parties would actually have half a brain for true leadership and not just populism and shortsighted voter pleasing while sacrificing long term gains.

And I think it would be a bad idea to not become stricter on migration, dangerous far right parties are finding it all too easy to get votes from people who see limiting migration as a major issue. The Left are probably too radical for me, but I'm glad they are there to give a voice to people who take issue with the way things are going. They feel like a party set up to be in opposition in that regard, and that's an important function too. I think it is important to have those voices, because it is certainly possible (scarily so) for people to go too far in the other direction.

The Worker's party is one of the 2 parties formed out of the state party which ruled the country during the Soviet occupation, and usually performs way below 1%. The more successful of the successor parties is getting effectively wiped not nowadays, which they can thank only to themselves, but they're are an S&D member. The Táncsics party is something i've never seen showing up at any of the elections, as it only exists in name and has fewer members than fingers I have. So Hungary won't contribute anyone here.

True. There is no left-wing party in Hungary. There is also no democracy. Hope for a change.
The Táncsics (2014-2023) never got exposure, being created after the fall of the republic in 2010.

I can’t vote in EU elections, but as a fellow European, I hope The Left don’t win. The safety of Europe depends on countries committing to 2% GDP at least.

In a fictional world without life... Any system pushes towards stability and pacification of one side by very mechanics of nature produces more aggressive other side as that becomes the best strategy until it balances out in a different way once again.
So their logic is useless in any realistic world.
