I believe they did what was called cel animation. Which is the traditional, hand-drawn animation technique that involves drawing and painting objects on celluloid (cel), a transparent sheet.

My mother loved Betty Boop, she saw them in movie theaters in the 1930's before television. As a child I watched them on TV in the 1950's, then animation in the 1960's took a nosedive with crappy cartoons like the Flintstones and they stopped showing these.

All a Sugar Daddy is, is a man who spends money taking care of his pretty girl friend, while not labeling it as a relationship. It's like spoiling a lavish pet (yes I know, that is a terrible thing to compare to a woman). The Daddy himself does not need to be abusive, creepy, or even sexually active to be a Sugar Daddy. That being said, I don't think Grampy is by definition Betty's Sugar Daddy, I think in that cartoon world Betty is just universally seen as cute and fun and desirable and Grampy is just a sweet old man who treats Betty with respect, so that's why she likes him.

This was made the year my mother graduated from high school. She lived in a very small town, but they did have a movie theater. Her family would go to whatever movie was playing on Saturday night, and my grandmother collected the gorgeous pink Depression Glass the theater gave away. I grew up watching these old cartoons because, by the time I was old enough to watch them, they were on kids' TV shows instead of making them for movie theaters. Mom seemed to know them all. I remember seeing this one many times. It was always a mystery to me that Betty could have such a huge head and such teensy feet. Time marches on.

Back when the whole animation process was in its fascinating infancy and it was treated like an art form. Beautiful panning shots combining layered cels and miniatures. Now they whine it's too expensive to do this?? What happened?
Although yeah the way animation is made is different from those times and it might be expensive to get good equipment to animate things even today (not to mention learning it) its a big step in the right direction since animations is becoming more and more accessible for many people who can show the world how creative they are (Although i’m not going to lie big companies spew out a lot of soulless and unoriginal work for a quick buck because of this accessibility)
Its a whole lot of work, nowadays nobody will do this kind of stuff because its really really expensive, buying the cells, the needles for drawing and paying for those people who are working in these. And it would be more time than the computer animated stuffs
