      LTT doesn't do prolonged testing of SSD's. Sure, they have a lot of systems/servers they rely on everyday but I don't recall them ever covering an issue like this. Anecdotally I tried out a Gen 4 Sabrent Rocket a while ago and after it died after 3 days of use I decided to stick with Samsung for my NVME drives.

      Unfortunately that's one of those things that they can't fully account for. If enough attention is drawn to it I'm sure LTT will do a follow up. Personally I did some research before settling on a pair of WD SN850's, though WD has had some issues with consistent quality/changing things. At the time there were only two real options for gen 4 M.2 SSDs, the Rocket and the 850 and the Rocket had enough reviews of premature failures that the choice was pretty clear. 850's also perform a bit better in random read/writes while Rocket's perform better in sequential read/writes.

    im starting to think they need to build video cards with the connector on the back end and install via a pair of rails, sort of like how datacenter hot swappable hard drives work. given how ginormous they have gotten and how relatively flimsy a single edge bracket and pcie slot (which mobo manufacturers have gone out of their way to reinforce) tend to be.

    • @edenrose2374
      @edenrose2374 2 года назад +2

      i would agree, but then it would break compliance. Its not that there is something wrong with the formfactor design. Its that chip manufacturers are getting less and less efficient (per watt performance) overall.
      While idle wattage has gone down considerably over the years (AMD HD 79xx/R9 2xx/3xx/4xx | would idle on average just under 200w less than peak, which was usually around 400-600w), Underload GPU efficiency has dropped off considerably.
      While i agree a lot of this has to do with transistor count being through the roof with high core-clocks, that's only half the issue. GPU die efficiency hasn't improved much since mid 2000's. This is concerning in terms of progression.
      More chip developers such as Nvidia and AMD are focused on performance, they keep cranking up the chips power draw by cramming it into the same low efficiency space. This means it requires more power, and better cooling. - Its this traditional approach to cooling thats adding all the extra weight to the cards.
      In the short term, more efficient heatsink designs with alternative materials and better fans are one approach to fix this, but ideally the better approach would be to absolutely go with external cooling with water cooling of these demanding components.
      ---
      Long term, i think more efficient GPU die layouts, with far less of the power filtering and handling should be on the board. More daughter-boards to offset the cooling of the power-delivery (and repair) would solve this easily. However, as we are already seeing from Intel, they keep wanting to cram more heat creating VRM's and rail switching right onto the motherboard as-is. Concerns are shifting away from Gaming/Enthusiast Addon components(gpu's), and back to integrated low-end components.
      Convenience and pure aesthetic is slowly winning out against engineering and product design sense. So i dont see daughter boards or more efficient GPU's coming back any time soon..
      ---
      This all said, your probably thinking "None of this matters today with existing stuff. Its just a bunch of worthess conjecture, add a support rail and be done with it!", while you would be entirely right... There is a huge problem to this approach. Standards exist for a reason, altering these standards means breaking compatibility with older or upcoming devices.
      It also means breaking compatibility between like devices.
      This is why the "firewire" vs "USB" debate ultimately culminated in a uniform spec. | More separation in case design that comes away from spec guidelines means more and more niche solutions come along that breaks reparability and support.
      Adding /anything/ to the GPU which is supposed to integrate with a case, means updating pci formfactor specs. It also means breaking compatibility with old cases that lack support for it.
      From a engineering standpoint Adding a "Support arm" attached directly to the GPU will not reduce flex. This is a fault of the PCB, not the "Card case". Thin PCB's are exposed to more flex. This could be solved by adding additional layers of copper with heatpipe channels built into the pcb its self to both mitigate heat transfer and isolate the grounding plane. Requiring 0 spec changes, significantly reduced flex and improving thermals overall. But lets face it, GPU market has turned into a pyramid scheme of "How much can we produce, at the lowest price possible and charge the most for". - Less efficient heatsinks borrowing from pre-existing designs mean they appear more efficient, but in reality its just minimal effort. Combined with on average the worlds worst fans, usually means most GPU's are designed to fail, and fail within 3 years.

    • @LordOfNihil
      @LordOfNihil 2 года назад

      @@edenrose2374 the rail system would be the extreme hyperbole option to help explain the problem. if actually implemented it would end up adding even more bulk to the systems and therefore cost (water cooling has the same problem). so the answer would be in small amendments to the existing standards with a low cost of implementation. a couple examples:
      doing something like adding an extra bracket at the other end of the video card (ive seen old vesa cards that do that), and a line of structural holes to the chassis spaced at 20mm intervals in like with the rear bracket holes. then spec video cards over a certain weight limit to have a tail bracket. if the card is exceedingly long they can opt for a captive thumb screw. chassis manufacturers just add the holes and include any necessary standoffs, gpu manufactures are responsible for the brackets.
      making the bracket hard mount directly the the bulk of the heat sink. cards with a 3 slot (and i saw one with 4) bracket already have a fairly ridged mounting point which is sometimes underutilized. most of the boards ive disassembled use the pcb itself as an intermediary using only a couple screws at most with no direct connection to the weighty heat sink. this would just be the gpu manufacturers problem.

      I don't think anyone wouldn't want their PC to be as small and quiet as possible - I think their lack of representation in the market is due to them being expensive and often hard to access. I'm building a custom PC case out of the leftover bits remaining from a 1939 Philco radio that I made into a massive PC case in 2014. The big case will house my NAS, with it's motherboard and 12 hard drives, as well as a standard ATX motherboard for a workshop PC. My new case is 13 inches long, 10.5 inches tall, and 9.6 inches wide. It will support a full size ATX motherboard, with 7 low profile PCIe slots coming out the bottom of the case, and up to a 3 slot GPU exiting the rear. The PSU is an SFX supply, and the CPU is cooled by a Noctua NH-D15. The design rotates the CPU cooler 90°, and creates a sort of front to back wind tunnel effect. The front and rear grills are going to be waterjet cut custom brass panels. The GPU pulls air in through a top mounted brass grill as well. The case hinges open like one of those old style PowerMac G3/G4 towers. The whole thing is suspended off the desktop by legs, and will have a nixie clock built into the front.
