  • We've got some news! The Pittsburgh Penguins, according to a report from Arthur Staple, are hiring David Quinn to replace Todd Reirden on Mike Sullivan's staff. Hunter and Patrick discuss what this hiring means, why they have reportedly landed on Quinn as a replacement, and if he can help the power play. They also discuss how Quinn can help Erik Karlsson after Karlsson had the best season of his career under him during the 2022-23 season. They look at if he can unleash Karlsson a bit more on the power play and also whether he can help some of the younger players. Finally, the two discuss Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final and how the Florida Panthers smothered the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night. They also look at how Evan Rodrigues continues to play his tail off for the Panthers after a two-goal performance and how the Penguins continue to look foolish for letting him go. All of that, plus much more, is on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

    They never should have let affordable players like Freddy and Evan go. Only to be replaced with older slower players

    If Quinn can get the F3 to cover the point when the defenseman pinches, he'll be a great success.

    I agree with all of this in regards to the Quinn hire. I don't love it primarily because of his lack of HC success in NY and SJ but neither of those rosters were good so I can't fault him entirely. I'm intrigued at him potentially getting more out of EK65 because of how good he was in 2022-2023, and since the Pens' PP was 31st, I don't think it can possibly get any worse haha. I'm happy for E-Rod but my heart hurts because the Pens let him walk for nothing and then passed on an opportunity to sign him last offseason

    Sully has camaraderie with his friend Quinn. I'd still hire a specific power play coach and a power play video coach separate from Quinn. A lethal power play is what the Pens need. Maybe Quinn is the correct power play guy, I will evaluate that next season.

    Also, that wasn’t even a penalty on ERod. He finished a check on Lindgren who had just got rid of the puck. The refs called it a penalty for roughing (which it wasn’t) because there is no penalty that’s called “retaliatory”. Lindgren had just drilled ERod from behind into the boards (illegal) and didn’t call that. Sullivan didn’t get pissed at the ref, but gave ERod the death-stare & i said in that moment, “well ERod isn’t getting signed”. Before getting pissed at the goaltending, how about Letang who took our goalie’s eyes away by standing right in his line of sight, he never tried moving opposition out of the way, getting out if the way or how about blocking the damn shot? There were about 5 or 6 goals in that series directly because of Letang doing that. Another reason why i’m a Letang critic.

    • @LockedOnPenguins
      @LockedOnPenguins  3 месяца назад +1

      It was retaliation, and the ref always calls that, sadly. Lindgren definitely should’ve been called but that’s just how NHL officiating is these days and I’m not so sure about Letang in that series, personally. I think Domingue missed a lot of easy saves because of his own play, not really Letang’s. Were they a mess at times defensively in the last three games? Sure but the saves were there to be made IMO. Average goaltending gets them through.

    Domingue only ended up playing because Dumoulin and Letang have a habit of running rushing forwards into the Pens' netminder. That's how, both, Jarry, and DeSmith got injured.

    David Quinn is the most predictable hire ever, because apparently he's Sullivan's best friend. Quinn's lack of a success as a head coach is suspect, but perhaps he'll be fine as an assistant. Like you talked about the most intriguing aspect of Quinn is that Karlsson had 101 points the season he played for Quinn, maybe he knows how to get the best out of Karlsson.

  • @bryanelliott6662
    @bryanelliott6662 3 месяца назад +1

    Don't know a lot about David quinn. The defense was awful at times last season and the powerplay was awful all season long. If he can get both to respectable it will be a good hire. E rod is playing well and played well for the penguins. The pens made a lot of mistakes with the bottom 6. Protecting carter of tanev in expansion draft. Too be far though, at the time carter was playing great hockey. The dumbest move was trading jared mccann to Toronto. McCann has been great for the kraken. A bonifide top 6 player with them.

    I don't hate this potential hire but the power play MUST improve ASAP and a new voice might be exactly what they need. I don't have a ton of concern about Karlson that much because Mathison struggled in his first season here and had a great 2nd year. Sometimes players take a little longer in the Sullivan's system especially offensive D-men. Pens screwed up not bringing E-rod back. His position flexibility is too valuable not to have kept

    The Draisaitl cheap shot, on Barkov, shows how much Florida is frustrating the Oilers top players. He's done stuff like that, a time or two, in the past, in the playoffs, when Edmonton's having scoring difficulties.
