  • I hope you’re having an awesome Sunday! I’m back in my studio today but haven’t been here in a while, so it can be hard to get going again. There’s often a resistance I need to move past. Here’s a hack that helps me. It has to do with having a plan.
    Check this out.
Sometimes we rely on our art alone to lead the way. Pausing to think through what we’re chasing in our art, and taking notes, helps create a plan for next steps. I often do this after a painting session right on the painting. It gives me the juice I need to return to the work with clarity and energy!
Does this resonate with you? How do you keep the thread going in your painting sessions? Let me know in the comments.
This week on the Art2Life Podcast, I will expand on this idea. How do you come back to your studio and work after a long break? At first, you can feel like a stranger in your studio. I’ll share ideas on tapping into what brings you alive and how you can drop into your work more quickly. Join me this Wednesday!
Be sure to check out this Wednesday’s episode right here on our RUclips Channel!
Thanks so much for being here! Hope you make art today!
    Nicholas Wilton

I always find your suggestions are really interesting. Don't mean I use every idea but they certainly inform what I am doing. The juxtaposition of planning with working freely is certainly a challenge worth exploring. Thank you.

I tend to write down reminders for myself about techniques I used in a previous painting and want to use again. Sometimes I’ll write out a whole script of steps to follow that I can refer to if I get stuck or caught up in flow state and forget everything I’ve learned.

Thanks, Nicholas! Great timing. I’ve been recovering from surgery for the past 5 weeks and I’m just now starting to think about getting back in the studio. Everyone’s been asking if I’ve been using my time off (from my massage biz) to create… but healing takes a lot of energy and I haven’t had the motivation to be in a focused artistic state. I feel some fear about getting back to it. I’m going to jot down some notes and ideas and just go sit in the studio to see how it feels, with permission to not do anything if I don’t want to! Thanks for the tips. 😊

I’m looking forward to hearing this - to get me going I make collage -which I’m doing now- but this tip is pointing to where I experience the most resistance - oddly enough - the pausing to look and assess - to think - to make notes !! Thanks for being such a cheerleader Nick!

Yes, love writing down and recognizing things that are working that I want to add more of, especially since I'm trying to do a series of paintings at once in a similar color palette. Yes, identifying areas or items makes returning much easier.

I’m so, so stuck way before this stage …. In brief I was just unfurling my art voice when my beloved Mum (an artist died) and it took me over a year to feel it’s okay for me to art even if she can’t. As soon as I reached that point I was forced to move rentals illegally - and my whole studio was packed up, but then I won to stay another year and couldn’t get it unpacked again. I was then forced to move again (and had to this time) losing another 6 month! Now I’ve moved and all my studios still in boxes, I’m exhausted, emotional and don’t know if I should even bother. I sit on the floor of the room, looking at the boxes and cry. I don’t know how to motivate myself that it’s safe and worth yet trying … I’ve never managed to have any peace to do it longterm yet. What if I unpack and then don’t let myself art anyway. I’m a mess. Sigh.

Dear friend, You sound like your still grieving the loss of your mother and all the art that brought you together….sifting through those feelings requires asking a lot of questions, maybe get a multi media book and paint or draw in all those feelings in it. The goal is to get those feelings out of you.. don’t give up, do what you love 😊

Thanks Nick for the breakdown of your process. The workshop and your videos have helped me navigate the painting journey when I become lost. Having notes for revisiting a paintings is a great way to get back to the journey quicker.

    Very helpful !!!!! Thank you😊
Sometimes I write down what I want to correct or add to the painting I’m currently working on. Sometimes I just number the areas in my head and don’t write down… I may have 5 changes to make… I always remember 5! When I return to the painting I always know I had 5 areas to address and can always find them. When I step back and look at my painting I always ask myself is there anything I don’t like and how can I improve on it. I can say I’m a much better painter today because of Art2Life !!!!!!

I'm thinking ur painting could use some lite, smeary, scribbly, transparent glazes inside those blocks of colors youve got there...enjoyed the video.

My life is very decadent. I don't have to do anything anymore. not for money, I just have everything. I lie on the couch all day. Suddenly after months I get a completely unnecessary need to make art. I then make 50 or more paintings like crazy. Then it stops again for months. I don't sell, no need. Am I normal??

Apparently Hemingway would purposely end a writing session already knowing what he would do next so he would know where to start when he next sat down to write.
