How I drop into my work quickly…

  • I’m in the studio today with a painting I haven’t worked on in a while. To help me drop back into it quickly, here’s something that I do, that you might want to try too. I unplug from my phone and other distractions and set a timer for 20-30 minutes. It gets me out of my head and fired up to make big moves fast.
Watch at high speed, how this painting changes in 30 minutes.
A timer is super effective if you’re short on time, too. So give it a try. Take the time seriously, set a timer, and go for it! I’m never sure where the work is going, but I trust that I’m finding my way. Experimenting and staying loose is the best way forward.
How do you show up and drop into your practice?
On this week’s episode of the Art2Life Podcast, I’m joined by Adam Rosendahl, a facilitator of this cool company called, Late Nite Art. He’s an incredible musician and an artist, but his real art is bringing people together and creating connections through powerful art events. His music and playlists are amazing, too! Join me this Wednesday; you’ll be inspired! You can listen to and subscribe to the Art2Life Podcast right here on this channel.
    Have the best Sunday!

Great tip Nicholas, setting a timer on myself will definitely stop the overthinking and procrastinating . I loved watching this painting evolve and how you took risks. Then when you flipped the painting, well it just worked 😍

Such a good topic! I suspect most of us have trouble dropping into a painting session. I’m going to try this idea of 30 minutes.

Love the freedom in the second version. (I think I should switch from acrylics to oils.) It is a fun piece, Nick. Love it!

Impressive as always Nick! I like the idea of setting a time to get to it. Hopefully it will stop me fiddling about before I start working on a piece. Love those shades of green and blue together.

Hi Nicholas, I LOVE this place and you have the greatest advice that doesn't just touch on technique but actually connection with your art and that is what I often need in this chaotic adult life! You're just the coolest! From one Renaissance gal to an enigmatic man, I give gratitude!

When you made all sorts of marks and that huge yellow-green area, it was messy and chaotic. I would have been discouraged at that point, and maybe even given up. This video is a demonstration of what to do in that situation. Thank you!

Yah, some of my best piece (have sold) I don't know what I'm doing as I working on it. This makes it hard to explain what the piece is about. I sometimes (all) make it up and some how it makes sense.

Hey Nick - I love your work!!my question is do you have a sense of what colour palette you want to use before starting as it seems like whatever colour you use- it pops against what you have? When I use a timer the colours seem to get muddy!!?😊
