    NIck, now that you have al ot of experience with the Beatstep Pro, it would be useful to do another video, more tutorial based, on how you use it in your setup, and maybe some of the new features. Demo is better for those of us who need to see and hear the how the new features work.

    Great episode (as always). My favorites tend to be when it's just the two of you geeking out.
    You guys missed my favorite new feature of the BSP update: each drum track can have its own length. This is epic for polymetric stuff (or just getting a little variation in your drum tracks).
    Also, the MIDI channel per drum track, while cool for Nick's use case (triggering different bits of gear), was really added for one reason: Volca Sample/Volca Beats/Electribe 2 support. This is a big 'un!

    You can add button or Fader controls to macros via the midi mapping button in the top right-hand corner of your window, in Ableton. The downside to this is that it overrides all other commands for that specific button/fader/knob, unless Mapped otherwise. You can also play clips in real-time, from your session window while you're listening to the timeline in ableton live so you can listen back to the structure of your track, while you're auditioning new clips or maybe sequences that you might want to add to the actual track on the timeline view. but yes there are a few visual key points I do wish we were there .... I don't think it's of any use to go into detail in the comments though haha you guys know what you're doing.

    Re erebus tuning, you could add a fixed cv from an attenuverter and just keep the tuning dial turned down to minimum. Accidently whack it and you can just turn it back to the minimum quickly.

    On studio desks;
    Well, it's highly unlikely that one will find the perfect desk from a catalogue, but a pre-made one, could offer a great start for modifications.
    I would say the biggest issue is the price. If they were priced like Ikea furniture it could have been the obvious place to start when building ones custom desk set-up.
    The limitations of a desk would be a thing, even with a custom desk. Unless what you mean is a platform, that use every spare centimeter of the space the desk is going to sit in, then it is unlikely that one will find a pre-made desk that specific size, so that custom platform would offer greater expandability over the years, as it would take advantage of every centimeter.
    What I really would like to see on a pre-made desk, is a clever slide out system, where one can somehow slide out different set-ups on the same working friendly level + the ability to use computer-keyboard and mice/precision touchpad in combination with any of the set-ups.
    Different set-ups for different parts of the production.
    The studio-desks I've seen, at best give one two working surfaces, the desktop and a slide out.
    In my mind, there should at least be an additional slide-out for computer keyboard and Mice/touchpad, so that room for that would not have to be left on the desktop, as the space is limited to only two proper working surfaces (desktop and slide-out).
    But I rather see at least two different slide-out work-surfaces, so the top of the desk could be used for general stuff, like computer keyboard, DAW-controller, clip launcher, perhaps pads/Maschine style controller, and general assignable controls. If the slide-outs sit in the back half of the desk, and the desk has adjustable height, it would then even be possible to adjust the desktop to be at the perfect height for any situation when neither of the slide-outs would be used.
    One useful work surface in my mind is motor-fader mixing surface.
    And then there is the Piano-style keyboard controller surface.
    With the desktop dedicated to general controls, those controls would be in reach, even when the focus in on another task from one of the slide-outs.
    That two surface slide-out system would still leave any MPE enabled alternative controller without a dedicated work surface. But I guess for some that would probably replace the piano-style keyboard for general note playing, as it adds several levels of expression that is useful for about everything that isn’t a piano sound thus covering most midi note input uses.
    On a three surface slide-out system, there could be room for both or perhaps another type of control surface more fitting for any specific user, but constructing a system with two slide-outs, would probably prove difficult enough.
    It would take some skills and some special components to build a system like that, so it is unlikely that one could design or have it designed for one’s individual use, if the budget for the desk isn’t very large. A company that makes desks could bring the costs down considerably compared to single users.
    A desk similar to what is shown in the video, could be built for a fairly low price, and also customized better than the options they offer, so I just think it would be nice to see something that one is unlikely to be able to have in a custom desk.

    • @TheJonHolstein
      @TheJonHolstein 7 лет назад

      The best I could come up with, as a cheap workaround is a desk with height adjustment (electric or hand powered), a single level slide-out and an X-stand. Keep in mind that the desk will probably have a metal beam at about half the depth, and one would not want the slide out to stick too far out, when it is pushed in, so it’s worth considering what equipment should sit on the slide-out based on the depth.
      The X-stand can be pushed in, or dragged out from underneath the desk; given that the desk has the right size and that the space between the legs is big enough. Many X-stands offer a quite quick way of adjusting the height. But if the slide-out is pretty slim in height, it may very well be possible to do some quick actions on the equipment on the X-stand, without having to adjust the height of it from the height it is resting at, when under the table. I say equipment, because it isn’t that hard to make a wooden top for an X-stand, and to keep it from sliding around, one can put wooden stops at the position of the top bar, at the different height positions needed (two positions). With a wooden top, it’s possible to use equipment that is made for placing on flat a surface, and the devices does not have to fill the width of the X-stand either.
      The height adjustment of the desk will help to get the right height for the simultaneous use of two work surfaces. But it also allows for using the slide-out as the base for computer keyboard, as it would then be possible to adjust the height, so it can still be used if the X-stand is pulled out and adjusted to the appropriate height, as reaching over and down to write would then be very an inconvenient alternative to the height adjustment.
      I was first thinking of a two level slide out system. But that meant that desktop surface would be less useful as the height of the desk would have to be adjusted so that the two levels could sit above ones knees when sitting at the desk. In trying to minimize the height, one could have a slide-out with low-height devices only, but that would limit it to mostly acting as a computer keyboard surface, with perhaps some slimmed DAW controllers or clip-launcher. But the issue then is that to be able to use that surface at the same time as the other slide out (as one probably would need, because of the type of devices on it), one of the slide-outs would have to be able to extend pretty far from the keyboard, and that makes it hard to get a stable surface.

      Did you watch all 53 tuturial episodes?
      Seems really versatile.
      And there are hidden features over Midi CC, that are left over from the Blofeld engine used. I really wonder what the hidden 24dB PPG filter mode does for the sound.
      unfortunately the Sledge lack proper Unison with detune... Unison is a hidden midi CC feature, but there does not seem to be any way to add detune.
      There might even be a second filter in it. But if there really is, I don't know if it responds to the enveleope, or any other modulation.

      I didn't know about ANY of that! Thanks, I plan to find some deep tutorials before i pick it up. It's certainly an interesting synth... the added polyphony, the split keyboard, the rudimentary sampler... it's all pretty unique. And it sounds decent. Excellent stuff.

    the MACROS on ableton can be assign to buttons ...
    when you "midi learn" a button instead of a knob , the "macro knob" in the soft will go from zero (button off) to 100% (button on)
    i use it a lot, very cool ,
    if you wish the button to use/have a different "midi range" (not zero to 100%) , you can set the range on the left page (midi assign list)
    you can assign buttons to any assignable parameter on ableton , volumes or what ever else ...

      i would love to beta test one day this new design , if it would be ever possible ,
      i work composition & music production on ableton everyday since 2010 (is my job) , i spend countless hours on on it ,
      since i moved from logic to ableton i miss the dark skins , i got use to the monolake skin, but your design look very clean and readable ...
      maybe not so good for a small screen thought ... to be tested ...

      Carry on, they will employ you at one point! You went that far, it was only the first step!
      Maybe work with an iOS programer, you might learn from each other, good portfolio, and step by step closer. I want you on their team.
      A lot of features you want to implement makes common sense.
      The only thing, is I guess more it's beautiful and complete, more the engine need CPU! Like games sometimes, you can alter the graphism resolution, depending on how powerful your computer is, to get a good balance between beauty and efficiency (no latency)!

    Came here to see if the Beatstep put in polyphonic MIDI sequencing. I would buy it and just get a non-sequencer drum machine to replace my mpc-1000 if they implemented this, and then probably expand on my gear that uses CV to take advantage of that aspect.
    Too bad they didn't add that feature.

    I Feel for Gaz and his now rather currently unsuitable theme for a concept album of music relating to the tower blocks in the UK although it is kinda very relevant in a way, maybe some of these blocks should of pulled down instead of just renovated, then where would all the tenants live, people seem to forget we are a very overcrowded island with huge problems of poverty in the inner cities. Worthy of a debate and maybe a rethinking of how to tackle this and bring out some positive message in the music. Maybe do some gigs to raise awareness and money to help the people who have been affected by the recent tragic events.
    On another note I found the charity song that has just been released was a slightly bizarre choice of "Bridge Over Troubled Water' a reworking of Simon and Garfunkel's song. I found the title a little hard to swallow after the recent attacks on Westminster Bridge and London Bridge being very prevalent in peoples minds. I think they should of written a new song and waited a couple more weeks it would of been a much better choice and they could of made it a lot more relevant than some old 60's song. if I had been involved that would of been my choice. I guess being as read as a library book is in fashion!? these days.

    you can combine both timeline on ableton , it was always possible ....
    if you want me to give you a lesson on how use properly (together) the mixer/clip view and the arranger view, i am happy to do it , just drop me a message
    PS
    i was a big logic/cubase/protool user for about 10 years (2001/2010) ,, the mix/clip view saved my creativity , the classic time line kill inspiration ...
    you must use your ears to compose/arrange music not your eyes ...

    I have to admit i am pretty disapointed by arturia. 2 years? that´s kind of the same ignorance dsi put up with the tempset. i honestly was about to sell the bsp yesterday. just the fact arturia didn´t implement polyrhythm at all befor this made me mad. i had to use my pc for that. in the end i will build myself a midibox. arturia never again. software is allways so messed up. stop putting money to the pr devision!

    • @TheJonHolstein
      @TheJonHolstein 7 лет назад

      Did arturia promise to release those features?
      Or was it just you that wanted them badly?
      Origin never got all that was promised.
      The DSI Tempest perhaps did in the end, but it took them a long while.

    • @ketamu5946
      @ketamu5946 7 лет назад

      It was more or less the last step button that made it obvious polyrhytm could be done al the time. it was just out of the businessplan. Just like the release version where you had to be in absolute timing because the beatstep pro did switch patterns on an instance. that was one of the first corrections they made. when a company promises that a product is easy to use... well then they should invest more money in the promise than into screaming it out loud into the pr pipe. but thats common (digitakt *cough*)

    • @user-qf4zs6qj4c
      @user-qf4zs6qj4c 7 лет назад

      It's probably fair to say they released it a bit prematurely before the firmware was fully sorted. They are a very small company and seemingly under-resourced on the firmware side. But there's no denying it's now a brilliant little unit for not a lot of money and with V2 installed it's a lot more stable and fully (ok almost) featured. In the future I expect they'll be more on the ball with regard to bug fixes and feature upgrades across their product range. Hope so anyway because for me the BSP has been a godsend.

      I have to say, I'm still more into the mediterranean diet, than the one you guys are accustomed to. Various iterations of the English Breakfast, Pub Food and Meat Pies, isn't that pretty much it? On the other hand, we had a certain "little" restaurant called *elBulli* in Catalunia.
