Turning Game Sprites Into Real Objects // feat. Bambu Lab and Fusion 360

  • Join me today as I take inspiration form the classic Nintendo Gameboy "TETRIS" video game sprites to bring the in-game Tetromino shapes to life, in the form of designing and 3D-Printing some fridge magnets, utilizing my new Bambu Lab X1 Carbon 3D-Printer.
🟣 I'll be showing whole design process I used to create these magnets. Starting with Autodesk Fusion 360 I'll be making two sets of Tetrominoes. Firstly a single-color set, using layers to give them a 3D effect and then, expand on the process to make some Multi-color ones.
🟣 Additionally, I will be showing how I colored in the Multi-colored ones in the Bambu Lab Slicer software so they can be 3D-Printed in multiple filament colors, using the Bambu Lab AMS (Automatic Material System).
🟣 There is an easter egg, that I only noticed (clue: gravity defying) while editing in this video. So, kudos for those who find it :)

Random bit of trivia. In the 90s there was a Tetris themed song released by 'Dr Spin' which was actually produced by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. He did a few novelty songs in the early 90s due to an off the cuff comment from his wife that he wouldn't lower himself to making cheesy pop songs 😂
He also did Yellow Polka Dot Bikini as well.
Other quirky songs was a Super Mario Land song done by Ambassadors of Funk too.

A useful tip about super glue is that if you sprinkle bicarbonate of soda on it then it almost instantly dries as a much stronger kind of concrete. That tip only works if you're adding the glue to the sides of something you've already pressed together... because you wouldn't have enough time to actually press them together, as it dries so fast. I learnt this tip from someone who actually fixes real aeroplanes!
Erm, it probably wouldn't be useful to you here, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.
I often do this when fixing my daughter's toys, as basic super glue isn't usually strong enough for "rough" play; but this trick makes it really strong.

I don't use separate bodies, I extrude the different coloured sections by differences of 0.003mm in fusion. So in your example the black would be at 6mm, the green at 6.003mm and the white 6.006mm. Bambu studio will allow you to use the colour painting fill tool to select them.

  • @HorizonOfHope

Fun fact: Tetris includes the most sophisticated code of any software program in history. It's the bit that ensures that when you have an empty column beside 8 rows of perfectly stacked pieces with no gaps the game only gives you six of the crappy squiggly pieces.
And then, when you accidentally stuff it up and block the top of the column it gives you four of the line pieces in a row.

The multicolored pixelized tetris blocks look really good, my current printer can only print single filaments but I'm planning to build a voron 2.4 with a carrot feeder, bambu would be just too simple for an engineer x) if you want a challenge maybe try building a voron from a kit next as well, I'm sure you it would be like a puzzle for you. Also you could experiment with water dissolvable filaments (for supports) with the bambu, my main reason for looking for a new printer because I hate prying those off. Anyway, good content as always.
Also one tip that really changed my 3d printing habits is to use fuzzy skin in orca slicer, at least on my printer it practically hides the layer lines and gives the prints a nice organic texture. Just don't go overboard with it, something like 0.2mm or less worked for me. I made a mistake to dismiss that feature at first because I used way too high values, but only later I realized the less the better.

if you want line clears with the 3d prints you could subtly change most of the interior square edges so they key together a little but could still be sheared off when a line clears.
make the board with some spring-loaded pegs down the sides that you can press out of the way and then push across so only the clear row moves.
seems like a lot of extra work and magnets for a gimmick, maybe it's worth a video idk i'm not a youtuber.

  • @Teh-Stig
    @Teh-Stig 8 дней назад

Great video. Some suggestions for next model/print:
Getting used to the pattern tools in Fusion makes modelling easier in the long term (i.e you can use rectangular pattern and mirror rather than modelling each cube individually)
Embedding the magnets in your model (i.e. pause the print and insert them between layers) means they'll never come out and be more scratch resistant (also works great for embedding captive nuts etc).
For characters to print, Prince of Persia, Lemmings in varying poses, Commander Keen.
A cool concept would be bringing classic splash screens or boxart to 3d Printed artwork with Hueforge and the AMS.

I love Tetris! I still play it all the time on my Game Boy Color [sic] whenever I'm watching a video that doesn't require my full attention, like a video podcast/news video. Obviously not this video, because I also love 3D printing and modelling. It's interesting to see someone else's design process, although these were a fairly simple design. It was also interesting to see the process for making multicolour 3D prints. I've seen the multicolour prints before, since my friend has a different one of those printers, just not the design process. And every time I see them, I'm tempted a little more to buy one of those printers!
Also, pro tip for making deluxe fridge magnets that don't potentially scratch your fridge door, you can get self-adhesive velvet or felt material that you can cut to shape and stick on the back of the magnets. Felt is usually thicker, so you may need stronger magnets (though yours looked pretty strong), and obviously it's best if they're inset flush with the base.

  • @johnybitmap2559

Both are nice... and maybe a combination of both deep relief and multi-colour would yield the ultimate result, because as you said yourself - the multi-coloured ones don't even look like they've been 3d printed.
But between the two, it's hands down the multi-coloured ones for me.
Do you know why? Because with this technique, you can practically 3d print pixel art. 😊

Insert your magnets during printing, add a pause gcode before following layer which closes the magnet chamber. It is a bit more elegant and magnets are invisble placed inside your print.
