Great quote from his great book. Here's another one on the more serious note: "Three things that will give you clarity, remind you of your mortality, and give you courage to live harder, stronger and truer. Death (the end of a life) Family Crisis (trying to keep a life) Newborn (welcoming a new life) Greenlight, Matthew Mcconaughey. Part 6."
Matthew McConaughey is a brilliantly talented actor, but I really think this is his best role. There's something about how convincing he is about being the kind of absolute maniacal psychopath who would be hunting dragons during the apocalypse that really sells this movie. He doesn't just play this role tough, he plays it crazy, but not like out of his mind crazy, just the kind of crazy that is willing to risk everything, even other people, to achieve his goals. Christian Bale is also an amazing counterpart, the more tender, fatherly kind of man who would rather put himself at risk than anyone else, but McConaughey is just an absolute force onscreen here that Bale feels 1/3 of whatever scene they're in together, and it's almost a foreshadowing for how Heath Ledger would upstage Bale's Batman a few years later. That said, Bale is a phenomenal actor, and to upstage him it really takes one of the best performances of an actor's career.
Such an under appreciated movie, very entertaining. I recently watched Deep Rising and felt the same way. Could've easily been B movie disasters, but a great cast and director/script made them awesome.
My favourite performance of Mcconaughey together with Interstellar. Van Zan was an awesome character. One of Mcconaughey's own personal favourite characters to play.
Loved the reference to Coffeyville, Kansas. It's completely true that the Dalton Gang thought it would be a good idea to try and pull off something particularly audacious there: rob two banks simultaneously The ordinary citizens of Coffeyville didn't take kindly to that, rubbing out four of the gang, losing four of the townspeople in the process. Yes, the Coffeyville residents lost some of their own, but they weren't about to just stand by while a bunch of armed thugs took advantage of them.
That, and the equally brave townsfolk response in Northfield, Minnesota, when the James-Younger gang tried to rob a bank there, were what motivated John Wayne and Howard Hawks to make "Rio Bravo," in response to "High Noon." They felt that a movie that showed a town full of cowards who wouldn't help the sheriff (as well as a sheriff who went begging for help) was not only basically un-American, it was historically inaccurate. I think that Coffeyville and Northfield indicate they had a point. I am not as familiar with the Dalton gang, but the James-Younger gang operated in the South successfully for so long because they were operating in Southern territory, but against banks that were often owned by Northern "carpetbaggers" and they had popular support there. When they tried to operate outside of territory where they were viewed as modern-day Robin Hoods, and looked at merely as dangerous, homicidal thieves, they encountered determined and courageous opposition from ordinary townsfolk who stepped right up to fight them off.
@clarkxxkent1 No doubt. I just hope that we still have enough people here who would stand up on their hind legs that way if the chips were down, say an invasion or call to save the Republic.
