Its mind boggling. I'll be 60 in August. Mr Dean passed away 9 years before I was born.
I worked in a trauma center for 26 years. If everyone could see what happens to the human body in a horrific car crash Everyone would slow down, they wouldn't tail gate, always use the signals and always buckle your seat belt. Mainly its speed. We can be going 35 mph and die. But chances are you will survive. Double that speed the chances go way down.
Please.. everyone stay safe, buckle up and lower your speed. Your family wants you to come home tonight ❤
Much love from North Carolina 🌷 🌷
So true n Well said 🙏🏼

Absolutely! 💯
Your correct. You forgot to mention young women texting and checking there makeup while running 80+ miles an hour and steering the car with their knees and fixing there hair. As a truckdriver for the last 40 years I have seen this countless times since cell phones came to be.

Morbid fact. I got to see the actual speeding ticket that was issued to James a few hours before his crash. He received the ticket in Mettler, CA a few miles outside Bakersfield. I was a public librarian in the mid 2000's and while working in our Local History department viewed and held the ticket. Very sad ending for the talented actor. RIP.

@@marcosmontalvo9589 huh? he got hit by a car that couldn’t see him. Nothing stupid about that. An accident.

Never rely on other drivers for your safety.
Ever heard of Uber ? Lyft ??
I still remember the "Be a defensive driver" campaign in the 60s/70s it was everywhere even on envelopes from the gov. Left a big impression on my little kid brain.
So you just put your life in someone else's hands using uber & lyft. I'd rather take a professional driver like a taxi over those.
Good luck on getting ripped off 20 bucks around the store when easily Uber charges you 5 bucks.
Not where I live, Uber & lyft are the same as a taxi. Besides they've just about decimated the taxi cab industry, I'll support a taxi before anything else.
It's 1955...still people remembering him..RIP james

Nice report, very respectful. Mr Turnupseed never spoke about this with anyone, not just the media, if remember right. I was raised in Tulare & knew the family, good folks. True that it must have weighed on him daily but despite that he became very successful passing the business, his namesake, to His family. Rest in peace James & Don.
I lived in Paso until about ten years ago. My husband was born at the War Memorial hospital in December 1955.
I was told that the Porsche's engine ended up in the passenger compartment, and was effectively in Dean's lap.
Thank you for your respect for those who have passed.
The Porsche 550 Spyder was a rear engine. The first Porsche with a front engine was the 924 in the 1970's

French people told that the James Dean car is haunted .
@@yoyoglock4That's what I thought. My husband and I were VW fans. What a horrible accident, though.
I was told that the trajectory of the head-on collision, propelled the engine forward. My husband and I knew an older woman who had been working that night at the hospital (she was an RN) and said that Dean had some burns on him. The burns were not fatal. I did some research, and could find no mention of it. And the engine was not damaged. In fact it was sold later to someone who had it installed into his Lotus. There's more to the story; that engine had quite a history.
And it is rumored that the parts to the Spyder were haunted. No one knows where they are now, though.
@@kathleenadams4978very interesting info I thought the car body was purchased and is currently in a morbid curiosity museum

In my last year at high school ,1979 New Zealand, a boy in my class left school a few months earlier than the rest of us, he was able to because he turned 16 .He got a Motorcycle, and a job , and he was riding his bike to work one morning, and a truck pulled out in front of him , and he was killed. It's ironic to remember that before his accident James Dean made a public announcement movie clip saying "drive safe, don't go over the speed limits" to the then youngsters.
Speed kills 😢😮❤
Meaning, do as I say, not as I do
Yeah, and he was driving safely. That A hole cut in front of him! James wasn't driving recklessly, nor did he cause the accident. He also said, The life you save, could be mine."

Well produced, Lamont. Rolf was James Dean's Mechanic. In July 1981, he signed a contract for a feature TV show about him discussing the death of James Dean. On 22 July, an intoxicated Rolf Wütherich was killed when he lost control of his Honda Civic and crashed into the wall of a residence in Kupferzell. Like James Dean, Wütherich had to be cut from the wreck and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 53 years old.

I live 20 minutes from Fairmount where James was raised and went to High school.
Every year in Fairmount we celebrate James Dean Days where thousands of fans bring in classic cars and small fair so to speak. You can go to James museum and see the rarest artifacts from James including his motorcycle, yearbooks, pictures, you name it, it's there. James is buried a short distance from his home.
Back in the 80s I had a silver car and it was like I was invisible to everyone in bright sunlight. People would pull in front of me all the time; so it seems that silver and light gray colored vehicles blend into an asphalt background making them almost camouflaged, especially prior to the daytime running lights implementation in the mid 90s.
I was born 4 years later in hospital where James Dean died. I have driven past the crash site hundreds of times going between home and the valley. They finally modernized the intersection but I still look both ways several times before proceeding because it feels haunted.
Wow that’s crazy , Do you know why they got rid of the Hospital and it’s a residential house now ?
@@lisasmith2245 they built a new hospital. The old one stood for a long time and I think it might have been a rest home for a period but the land overlooking the city was too valuable so subdivided for luxury houses.

69 years, actually. Next year in 2025 will mark 70 years
It’s crazy to think if he would have lived he would still be alive in 2025. This man was just getting his life started and was ultimately cut short
Your best yet. At 7:41 there is a patch of grass forming a triangle. The original transition to US 41 from 466 would have bisected that area, so that's where the impact was. Dean's Porsche actually ended up at the edge of the grass in the foreground at 8:23 where the red Camaro passes. This is because in 1959 the intersection was realigned for safety and the road the Camaro passes on did not exist in 1955, but the barbed wire fence did. Rolf was asleep until impact. He did not hear Dean say anything before impact.
Best comment I have read so far.
Yes, a good explanation of the crash and how the roads were at that time. "Dearly Departed Tours w Scott" YT channel.
If no one believes this, they can go to Historic Aerials and look at a 1956 aerial of this location.
This makes more sense. If the crash had taken place at the current intersection Deans car would have been traveling well over 100mph to end up along the fence line.
Yes
For anyone wondering, the road has changed a lot since that day. I'm not even sure where all that stuff was along the fence was the final resting spot of the crashed car, I think the original fence line was pushed back for new road expansion. In fact, coming down the hill you can look off to the left and can see parts of the original two lane road. Have driven thru here many times from Bakersfield to visit family near Morro Bay, beautiful area.
It really is beautiful. I used to live in Long Beach but I've been in that area plenty of times
TY for the great video!Peace Out!
I remember seeing another RUclips video that tried to ID the exact spot and pointing out that the existing spot is not accurate. I also read that the current spot is strictly for having a safe place to lay flowers, etc. About where the exact spot is, is now part of the road and too dangerous for people to standing near it.
@@delstanley1349 Yeah I think I saw the same video. But hey, it's close enough.
I was wondering about that because if so those cars both had to be going faster then 55 to travel that far, demolished.
I've driven this road many many times, having lived in Paso many years and then heading over to I-5 to go north. I'd always heard that James had just left the roadside restaurant Jack Ranch Cafe, and had headed back out on the road. I have seen several near accidents with people speeding along that route, it's a wonder more haven't been killed, the sun can temporarily blind people certain times of the day.. RIP James
As with Buddy Holly they should tidy up the crash sight and install a small monument.

I remembered traveling through that area in the 1980s and we stopped at a diner that had a copy of his speeding ticket. As a former trucker (1986-2018) I completely understand how this other fella could have missed James' car amongst other factor like the blind windshield pillar zone. Silver or grey colored vehicles tend to disappear and blend into the asphalt which in many cases is also grey. Look far into the horizon on a hilly two way road and you'll see this to be true. Grey and silver oncoming vehicles are hard to see at a distance.
There's not one individual who ever impersonates James Dean any which way you name. That's as we know it today.
There is no blind windshield pillar on either car. It was an offset collision, with the setting sun's glare being a major contributing factor. This also created for a hard-to-spot gray car on a darkish gray road.

As a motorcycle rider, I often encounter accident victims, where they weren't seen. I don't lecture, but my philosophy is that anything that can go wrong will go wrong. I always expect the worst, and take action to avoid it. Thinking that the other guy sees you and will stop is a death sentence.
I treat all other drivers I'm on the road with as if they were all drunken drug addicts, about to ram me from behind, cream a red light, or some other novelty. The habit is better and cheaper than insurance.

Legendary car builder George Barris used the remains of the car (minus the engine) as a public service display of crash safety to the public.
Shortly afterwords finding out the car was possibly haunted, Mr. Barris loaded the car up on a trailer and made a trip from California to Florida where he supposedly “disposed” of the Porsche 550.
It’s said that Mr. Barris took the secret to his grave of how and where that car met its final demise.
This is not folk story.. this really did happen.
RIP James Dean.
Post crash photos are not always indicative of what occured at the moment of impact. Roof removal is often undertaken by firemen to facilitate treatment and easier extrication of casualties. We Paramedics have a saying in England - "better to be late in this life than early in the next"
You are helping bring back memories for that generation. I know his story and about James Dean but his death was just a few years before I was born.
The 1955 Ford station wagon tow vehicle was driven by Bill Hickman with Sanford Roth. Hickman was JD's informal race driver instructor. Bill Hickman was the actor/stunt driver of the Dodge Charger in the movie "Bullit". Correct me if I'm wrong.
You are correct. Bill Hickman was the wheelman of the Charger R/T in Bullitt.
No correction, Hickman was there and saw the crash .
Hello, and very sad thing to have happened 😢rest in peace to all as well .Thanks for sharing this story with us.
I had no idea that the crash site was still this remote. I always thought that the impact was more of a broadside rather than a glancing blow. Lamont, thank you for shedding light on this tragedy.
Since you are back in California for a minute, maybe you could do something on Marilyn Monroe. The last house where she was living at is still in West LA
Lamont and his sister did a video on Marilyn
It’s not too terribly remote, just about 20 minutes or so east of Paso Robles. Turnupseed’s vehicle was broadsided by Dean’s, although Dean turned to the right a little, leading to the damage to his side of the vehicle, and more than likely saving his passenger’s life. While they say he was going the speed limit, I’m not very sure they were. There were very few police patrolling way out there at the time, and I’m sure he had opened the throttle back up. I’ve driven that stretch literally thousands of times (no exaggeration), in all types of weather and all times of the day & night. That left turn towards Fresno is no joke. Highway 46 E has a nickname that it’s earned: Blood Alley.

It was just an accident. No one was to blame but the Porsche itself. It was a low cut racer without a proper windscreen and it was a sunny day. Put those two together and the chances of a collision is high. Im glad they left Turnupseed alone as he was 100% not to blame for this tragedy. Same with James. Thankfully they brought out a law banning race cars from public roads. That's certainly saved lives since this awful event.
Dean's biggest mistake was driving the Pooch instead of towing it behind the Country Squire on the trailer, as was recommended by the dealer where he bought it six days earlier.
@@lancasterritzyescargotdine2602 Yeah big mistake. It's such a pity he was dead at 24 when he had so much left to offer. Still he never grew old which is my biggest fear! He was an old soul in a young body.

Back in the fifties, the sports cars that raced were essentially stock, and few were trailered to the track, most were driven, or flat towed. I believe that I've read that he wanted to drive it to the track that day, to break in the new engine, before racing it.
@@ramblerdave1339 That is true. It was his impulsive youth that overtook sounder judgment.
I'm so glad Lamont that you shared about Mr Turnupseed. That poor man would have been haunted by the crash and would probably daily remember that he killed James Dean. I too do NOT believe that he saw the funny looking silver car with the sunlight bouncing off it creating an intense glare that rendered Dean's car invisible and it is sad also that Donald died so young. I'll be 60 later this year, and my own mother died at just 62 from breast cancer. Before I hit my late 50's I used to think how OLD 60 was but poor Donald should have had at least another 15-20 years to enjoy his life, but you Lamont respectfully showed us his final resting spot and I thank you for that. My own brother died in a MVA coming up to 5 years ago but he was speeding, and he hit a rock on the road and lost control of his vehicle, broke his neck as the car rolled over and over and then the car burst into flames. He was already deceased by that point but I frequently wonder how the people who came across the crash in the moments after he crashed are doing because they knew that they could do nothing to help the man inside the car and I'm sure they got PTSD from that experience. The ambulances and Police Officers were several minutes away as there was only bush where he crashed.
We ALL need to slow down and stop rushing around like hive bees. If we get wherever we're going a few minutes late then so be it. It's certainly preferable to being a roadside memorial! Thanks for reading.

Trivia: Bill Hickman, the driver of the Ford station wagon pulling the trailer behind James Dean was also the man driving the black Charger in the movie Bullit" with Steve McQueen.
There was also a professional photo guy named Sanford Roth, who took several photos of the crash site before cops showed up..He mentioned that he had a very grisly shot of Dean in the car, dead. He decided to trash that photo, for being too gross and disturbing. Roth was riding with Hickman in the Ford Station Wagon. He had been contracted to take photos of Dean at the racing event.
Great Vlog about James Dean’s car crash. After all these years I did not know the details or the site in CA. Thanks Lamont for your very empathetic and unbiased narrative. Safe travels. ✌🏽🥰
Yeah lot of people think that memorial site is where his car came to rest, which it did not. It’s just a safer place that was set up by one person, others just started adding on. The layout of that intersection has changed; The road at the car rest spot was roughly in that long based triangle section, near the sign that says ‘James dean memorial junction’. I’ve gone past that spot many times, had family members who passed it too just after the crash itself. Either way, poor guy was just a kid when he died, and Turnupseed had no bad intentions, let alone any on wanting to cause that crash. I could only imagine the guilt he had felt afterwards.
Donald Turnupseed was 23 at the time and his guilt over the incident rode him the rest of his life.
@@lancasterritzyescargotdine2602 I believe it
Thank you for the information and Great Video, Sir. Billy Wills
It's so haunting to see the crash site. ... RIP JAMES...you told this with such reverence 🙏
Thank you so very very much for taking the time and trouble to video and upload this content - I really really appreciate your efforts
Is that Minnie Pearl
We had a lady here in Wisconsin driving a Porsche a few years ago. She was in her 50’s. Just got the car. She was stopped at a red light and decided to race a young boy about 18. At the next intersection the Porsche ran red light. There was a car coming from a cross street. Porsche hit the car and it split in two. Killed two girls aged 16. They were going to pick up their paychecks from a Texas Roadhouse which was on the corner of that intersection.
That’s horrible
What happened to the women in the car that was racing the other car.
@@calvinforcejr2382 She was recently divorced and got the car in a divorce settlement. She was in her 50’s and in her mid life crisis. She claimed her little dog got down by her feet causing her to hit the gas. She was found guilty and is serving two life sentences. After what she caused to these young girls she thought she should not be charged.
That was a nice tribute to James and Donald. Thank you.
I remember when this happened. People were so sad for days and days.

Hey we really enjoy urr version of story telling details yup 😎👍🏼❤ well done
Very well presented and researched. One of the best videos put together on the tragic car crash that took the life of James Dean. Thank you for sharing!
Great vlog. Visit Deans grave & museum in Fairmont, In. Also see his farm where Marcus Winslow still resides. The accident had witnesses. Two guys following Turnipseed testified that he was taking a "cheating" left turn actually driving on the oncoming traffic lane to make the left when he spotted Dean and tried to move back into his own lane when the cars collided. The Ford back end lifted up and the car ended up perpendicular to the road. You can see the damage to his Ford;s left frontend. They also testified that Dean (white shirt) was in the passenger seat and Rolf (plaid shirt) was driving. The Porsche went airborne and did a 360 and crashed into the fence. Dean was pinned in the car and Rolf was thrown clear. Also the road has been moved since the accident and was smaller, narrower, and more "rural" since 1955. Paso Robles Police Officers Tripke And Nelson Arrived At The Crash Site And Talked To Turnipseed. He claimed to have not seen Deans car (he lied). The cops thought Dean was driving because his left foot was crushed and stuck between the clutch and brake pedal. Turnipseed was driven home by a couple who testified that he kept saying "I hope he is alright" repeatedly. Finally, the ambulance was in an accident on the way to the hospital. Turnipseed lived in infamy and Dean became immortal.
My mother in law was related to James dean.
Thank u for sharing this.
Although I'm not questioning what your saying is correct, because that's what wikipedia says, it also portrays him driving over 70 and driving and passing cars the whole time. why wouldn't James be driving? Especially a "new to him car," that he was trying to get accustomed before the race. I find it questionable that he wasn't driving. And where his friend's body was found on the ground was objected as an irrelevant subject at the trial. At the last rest stop it never says his friend got into the driver's side, which would prove this theory true, if so.
Also, they guy hit him would have more center damage and not left handed damage to his car, if he was riding down left lane at the time of crash to turn. I think they just want to place blame on someone other then a "popular legend", instead calling it what it was, which was a terrible accident..
Nope...Dean was definitely driving, and his friend who ran up to the scene, verified to that effect. Those witnesses were just goofy.
Another interesting story! Thank you
