- It is possible to make your car headlights like new with acetone used by your spouse. Try this using simple materials like acetone, cans, straws, and candles.
I saw another video where acetone was in a rechargeable heated kettle and vapors would do that. I bet there are a lot of different ways to restore headlights but a sealant keeps them fresh longer
確かにアセトンはアルコールよりも樹脂を溶かしますからね。
私は過去に会社の研究室で、アセトンでビーカーに、こびり付いた樹脂の洗浄を行ったこともありました。
I wouldn't use a flame to warm the Acetone that is a Flammable solvent.

Seems like regular suntan lotion spf 30 that we use on our body would work on headlights! What do you think?
По желтеют за сезон. До 800 чистишь и лаком скрываешь, есть машина которой я делал лет так 5 назад. До сих пор как новые.

Considering how we’re being told that petroleum products are killing the planet, car manufacturers are still using single use plastics on their headlights.
What happened to glass headlights? They rarely chipped, and were made of a material that can be recycled indefinitely.
5X the price.
Probalby due to weight and cost for custom shapes for each model. The only one I know of was the Cadillac Allante. Those headlights outlast the car.
Had glass headlights on my old Citroen BX GTi. An impact with a pigeon was all it took to destroy one! And,incidentally, the glass was 5 to 6mm thick! Plastic has flexibility, unlike glass. Oh,and regarding dullness, the (in situ)application of Solvol Autosol metal polish with an electric buffing pad will restore most plastic units to their original shine, and ,should they be lacquer coated, this can be reapplied via a rattle can of clear coat from your local DIY store. Job done!
you can thank aerodynamic testing, gas mileage, manufacturing costs, and styling. Besides, statistics say it's only the second owner who has to worry about the problems of plastic headlights.
@@rupe53 oh, the same problem as EV ownership. Hence why the fallacy of Man Made Global Warming is a myth…..the proof from governments and manufacturers is right there to see.
I used Hippich Simichrome chrome polish first, then Maguires light polishing compound. About 10 mintues per headlight and about 95% like new again. Easy.
Doesn't seem being better or simplier than only sanding, polishing and painting* the headlamp-lens.

And why this thumbnail with candle-wax??
Soft blocks, are for contoured surfaces. Hard blocks, are for flat surfaces. Flooding, is the key to every, successful wet sanding project. If there isn't water pouring on it at all times, your dry sanding.

Clickbait.. he forgot to mention that you need to apply a lot of elbow grease as with any headlight restoration method..😁
How is it clickbait?
That acetone in the Red Bull can was kind of lame, and holding a candle underneath to boot? There’s a quick way to improve lights, not as good as your method, but quick. Use kitchen cleaner like Comet with a wet towel then get a restore liquid, not expensive from auto supply to finish.
1000 grit & water, 3000 grit & water then a polish and that's it. Good as new. I would never advise heating a product as flamable as aceatone.
This is proven method ..chemical compunds ..works.. Professional use this method or shops use for treatment.. What they are doing is using a actone vapors....which causes chemical reaction... .
They sell this kits online..
But once you are done with actone vapor treatment.... You have to apply layer of UV protection.. to make it last longer...
No thats not it.... You need to lacquer them to stop them clouding again...

No that’s not it. it needs to be treated with a plastic coating sealer. To protect it otherwise it becomes exactly like it looked before in a matter of a few months. Ceramic formulas work well.
Quickest way to restore any headlight is to replace them!

last step is easier with uv protectant clear spray. Krylon makes it. And it keeps it clear longer.
I just use my buffer with 3 grades of buffing compound. Like new in 20 minutes.
I think that General Motors used something like this to polish their plastic steering wheels pre-1970's
From Wikipedia: Vapor polishing is a method of polishing plastics to reduce the surface roughness or improve clarity. Typically, a component is exposed to a chemical vapor causing the surface to flow thereby improving the surface finish. This method of polishing is frequently used to return clear materials to an optical quality finish after machining. Vapor polishing works well in the internal features of components.
Feature size changes of the plastic component generally do not occur. Post stress relieving is usually required as vapor polishing sets up surface stresses that can cause crazing[citation needed].
Plastics that respond well to vapor polishing are polycarbonate, acrylic, polysulfone, PEI, and ABS.
The technique is also being used to improve the surface of objects created with 3D printing techniques. As the printer deposits layer upon layer of material to build the object, the surface is often not entirely smooth. The smoothness of the surface can be greatly increased by vapor polishing.[1]
would the same method also work for dull plastic trim around the car? lets say fenderarches/bumpers on a audi a6 allroad?
All I know is what I read on the wiki and don't recall where I read about the 1960's use case for plastic steering wheel finishing. These days in the USA the vapors would make such techniques unpopular with the Air Quality Management authorities. The Acetone that I think they used is pretty strong solvent and might just remove any paint.@@sttm1283

Try using a sander it'll be so much quicker
Heres a fact people you can get a better result wet sanding from 1000 to 5000grit, then using a small 3" rotary polisher with compounds and GOOD quality buffing and polishing pads. Second of all holding a flame under a thin aluminum can with acetone is extremely extremely f**king dangerous. Acetone is more flammable than gasoline. A lot more flammable and i do not recommend this because when it goes it all ignites at once going BOOM!!! exactly like gun powder. I know, i paint and do cerakote for a living and old rags used with acetone have turned my burning barrel into a gigantic shot gun a couple times when i lit it and blowing all the trash straight up in the air 20' then landing all around the 55gal drum that is my burning barrel
3 drops acetone and a lot of sanding and polishing

Lesson: Sometimes, simple solutions like using minimal acetone can yield incredible results in restoring headlights. It's all about being cautious and precise in application.
In a few months they will be yellow again. You need to apply a 2k clear to protect the plastic from getting etched by sulfur oxides. That's why they look yellow over time.
Hey nice to hear that it worked well for you, you did the same as shown in this video or just you rubbed Acetone over the headlights?

acetone has a flash point of -20C so not sure how anyone keeps from starting a fire with an open flame only a few inches away from the vapor.
“The stoichiometric ratio is the exact ratio between air and flammable gas or vapor at which complete combustion takes place.” Just because there’s a natural gas being let out of the swamp doesn’t mean someone else on the other side of the county doesn’t get to smoke a cigarette. Have you ever seen the video of the pale of gasoline that someone puts a welding ark in? The fire triangle states that there’s a source of ignition, and there’s a source of fuel, but there’s not a source of oxygen, regardless, the ratio of the oxygen to the fuel still has to meet the efficient.
@@williamcope2652 key there being complete combustion... or the ideal mixture for efficiency. Many flammables have a very wide range of combustion, although not ideal. I believe acetylene will burn from a 10% to a 90% mix with air. The sociometric point of gasoline is 14.7:1 expressed as a ratio. I'd have to look up acetone.
@@williamcope2652 The stochiometric point is for ideal combustion. IOW, least emissions and most power. Gasoline is 14.7:1 but there is a wider range of flammability overall. They are called the LEL (Lower Explosive Limit) and the UEL (Upper Explosive Limit) You also have to consider the conditions where you actually have a vapor to burn. Gasoline has no vapor at around -50F but plenty at room temp. Fuel oil / diesel has almost no vapor till you reach over 125F. IOW, you need the vapor and the air mixture. In this video there's plenty of air so it's a matter of reaching a rich enough mix to go boom.
