Fly Fishing Remote Mountain Stream for Mystery Trout
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 12 сен 2024
- Fly fishing in the remote mountains of Colorado, I found a mountain stream close to my base camp that had various trout species. Most of the species were a mystery to me, it wasn't until later that I identified the different species of cutthroat and brook trout in the river.

I know you are getting tons of comments like this, but as a huge fly fisherman myself, I have to add on. If you are going to be keeping trout to eat, handle them how you want, as long as you minimize pain for them. If keeping them is your goal, try to target non-native species (in Colorado that would be Browns, brookies, and rainbows). But when looking to release, especially with a fish as precious as the cutthroat, please minimize time out of water, wet hands before handling, and hold gently under the belly, and with big fish perhaps also a tail grip. That being said, I love seeing any conventional angler getting into fly fishing, and highly encourage you to keep experimenting with the long rod.
Took the words out of my mouth. That one fish that was belly up and then got coaxed into the current probably didnt make it.
yeah, that's the reason why the trout was not even moving at 17:25, gotta keep them wet and alive
@@fedefiorda Totally, when a fish is exhausted like that and you let it tumble down the river he's just bashing on rocks and getting swept away... fish should be facing upstream, hand gently around tail letting cold water run through gills and then they will swim off when they're ready! These are things I had to learn myself so it's good to educate people on the right practices without being haughty or a jerk about it! Y'all got the right idea, fish on dudes!
@@fedefiorda yeah, that fish was not going to be alright.

Oh man, that is dream fishing. Native trout and a fly rod. A glimpse of heaven on earth. God is good. Enjoy

God doesn't exist lmao
@bb booky Didn't mean to offend, personally an atheist because of no evidence to show any existence of any kind of god, and the fact that different religions exist directly goes against the chance that any one of them exist. Why is christianity right and muslims wrong? None exist. We exist because of evolution, nothing more. I'm still confused in how the universe actually came into existence but it wasn't a god. I mean even a scientific discovery (dinosaur fossils) disproves the christian god theary. I'm not saying we don't have souls, we might and then there possibly is a bigger power at play but know one really knows. We most probably are biological beings with consciousness being a evolutionary survival tool, which would mean when we die we just stop existing. You wouldn't even know it. Not just blackness but litterly nothing, because you can't fiscally percieve any information then. But it's all just theories and speculation. That's the point, no one knows. All that we do knlw for a fact is that this world's religions don't exist. There are no miracles, just lucky scenarios. No god guiding peaple, just peaple getting through tough times. It's a made up story to stop peaple from committing sins and being afraid of death. Nothing more. Sorry if I bursed your bubble but that's the real truth. Even so, believe what you want man. It's your choice. If being a christian and believing in god and heaven let's you sleep at night, power to you. But don't come here and say bullshit like what you replied.
Peace ✌
@@enriquemaartens ok, but why tf are we doing this in a fly fishing video :)
Enrique Maartens aye bruh just let people believe what they want to believe don’t tell them what to believe
Pro tip while fly fishing. Always start at the bottom and work your way up,casting upstream. The trout won’t spook as easily as they are facing upstream looking for food
Same way fishing in any Creek for any kind of fish
I'm pretty sure Justin knows exactly what
@@BrandonBReelKillerFishn Obviously he doesn't. He's way too far away from the water he's fishing as well. He needs someone to teach him in person. Especially with dries, he's fishing dries the same as he would live bait. At least he handles the trout well. And he is catching fish, so he's not doing it entirely wrong.
@@andyfletcher3561 you are correct about all of that I was a sure that he knew to go upstream 😎👊 and you sir seem to be very competent with your fishing knowledge please feel free to come over to my channel and sub. 😁
@LakeForkGuy
Ok, I highly recommend taking a trout identification card next time. Here in Montana we have a saying that if you're not sure don't shoot. I commend you on this aspect. Also, for mountain trout, use a small black fly that looks like a regular ol house fly. I use them with a spinning rod and have never had any problems catching fish. Looks like a great time!
Montana Pete that’s why he didn’t keep them
What kind of line do you use
@@OnionKnight64 , since the mountain trout where I fish are usually less than 2lbs max, I use a 1lb diameter braid on an ultralight rod and reel with a 2-4lb monofilament tippett. Lighter is better with these fish because it gives you better feel.
@@brettmontgomery4610, ergo why I said that I commend his decision.

@@TXDanielM I hear your brother you're a true lfg fan
One thing I think viewers are missing is that you stay out of the water, and you still catch fish. Nothing is disturbed. Plus, you put that fly dead on in some spots across on the water, up against the bank. Regardless of what you caught and how, you put out a great video on some decent size cutts.
15:13 and 16:47 are the same shot lol not sure if anyone else caught that

You’re not funny

The underwater footage on the first cutthroat was killer wish I would like it more than once
Focusing on the positive, oh what a feeling to be on virgin waters for the anticipatory bite in the back woods, cast your presentation and wham-o get a strike! It's quite the reward for any nature seeking, sight fish immersing angler... I love it and I can totally relate to this film setting, thanks for the visuals!
as someone who lives in colorado and loves fly fishing this video was so cool seeing LFG doing what i love
I'm from southeast Colorado, never been fly fishing. I need to find some friends to teach me haha
True! He needs our fly boxes!! :) Cheers!
We love fishing in Colorado too!
Same. So much fun. Those little guys fight so much.
I live in colorado to and flyfishing us the way to go it so intresting seeing one of my favorite youtybers do what i love in my state
Cut throat. I do not over play a trout. You must also wet your hands prior to picking them up. I also hold them in a slow current to allow the water flowing to help them readjust before releasing them I bass fish where I am but......trout fishing is my favorite. So beautiful and clean. Generally where you find them outside of stocked streams is beautiful country.

Put a table spoon of olive oil in the mountain house before adding the hot water It improves the flavor and texture,
I carry a small 4oz bottle of it along with salt and pepper packets while Dall Sheep hunting,
You can also use it too cook fish or meat while out backpacking.
Tinfoil is also handy and very light, take a piece big enough to wrap a trout in to cook in a fire.
Hank Patterson can clear up any misconceptions you have and give you some great tips.

If you can please get us a time elapsed film of the stars over your camp. Thanks
Nobody can self film like LFG. Man your stuff is so good!
I live in NC and I like going into the mountains of Boone, NC near Bass Lake, there is a stream that is filled with trouts. Nothing like first thing in the morning, having a great nice fire going, a pan ready with a little butter sauce with garlic and cayenne, Montreal seasoning, placing a nice caught fresh rainbow trout cleaned and ready for the pan with some eggs with a sprinkle of cheese and bacon bits and Indian bread with jelly. Love it, love it, love it!!!
Another great episode on your mountain adventure Justin! Well made video and the scenery itself is just mind blowing. Continued luck and safe travels along your journey!
What a great location! After your fishing , you can retire back to your retreat and enjoy! Enjoy!
I have a lot of disrespect for the guys complaining. Obv he would never intentionally hurt any fish he wasn’t eating. He obv doesn’t know how to handle trout or the species that well. But nether did you till you looked it up or someone taught. Stop being ignorant to the guy.
Other than that one he droped down into the shallow water I thought he did pretty well handling. Better than most in his niche that go after trout. That one though he probably stunned and that's why it was just laying flat. Didn't know how or have the energy left to navigate the shallows.
It's just being responsible. Don't handle species you aren't familiar with. Not that hard. He definitely killed at least one and he didn't hold it facing up stream to recover.
Brandon Roy so you every time you target a species you catch that fish. Lol well obv thats not true. Sometimes shit happens and teaching people is cool man pass it on. Teach not bitch
I would relax man. It’s not hard for an angler new to the sport to learn basic handling technique and carry a species ID card. Mad respect to LFG, but he could do more for the fish.
He'll know after reading these comments.
Props to a bass fisherman for recognizing more delicate handling with trout. Also, you are finding really good size trout for that tiny stream! Love seeing flyfishing make a wave on youtube
Truly one your best videos I love the mountains and fly fishing
I just flashed back to the garage to lake Norman video. Man what long way you have came. I watched on and off until I saw the video of you in the hospital bed. Since then have watched most all the videos. Really enjoy your content!
More of this! This is your style :)
Those are Rio Grande cutthroat, native to the Rio Grande drainage, and actually used to live in parts of west Texas believe it or not. Abundant in streams they do hold in but the streams they do hold in aren’t abundant. Rare fish, they occupy 10% of their original native range, so they are gems to catch but it’s one of those fish that usually just gets released. The first bug you used is also a stonefly pattern, but it can pass as a hopper to trout that aren’t finicky. If it’s overcast like it was throughout your video, stick with mayfly patterns or stonefly patterns, caddis in mornings and evenings, and hoppers if the suns out and it’s warm, and shorten up those cast, always run a dropper on foam patterns, whether it’s a stonefly or a hopper. Get up close and personal with the fish. It’ll really help you break down the water and be sure that you didn’t leave any fish behind. Make short cast every 3 inches. No fast movements.
Awesome video lakeforkguy. Whereabouts in Colorado where you?
It is so cool that you multispecies fish. Love it.
100 % cutthrout it is the best tasting trout 🐟 lol 😂😂😂😂
i prefer char related species like brook trout. cutthroat is like lighter rainbow imo. probably because they're so lean. i did catch some very large ones in a famous lake and they actually had red meat like salmon.
Oooo patty to the shin and backpack area .... fair trade I would say for the beautiful view and awesome fishing.
Pretty little stream in spectacular settings. Nice cutts too. Thanks for sharing. But dude, you've got to learn a bit more about trout, what they are, how to fly fish for them and how to handle them when at hand.
I have been fishing in that stream my entire life. Fishing pressure has hurt the quality and quantity of the cutty's in the stream over the last 10 years. The secret is out as more people find this gem. We just need to get it through to people to put em back! No "eaters" as you say...take a pic and keep them in the water. Great video of a magical place!
I'm guessing San Juans, maybe La Garita Wilderness? How far off am I?
@@alanmiller4122far
Man I love you LFG and really liked this video, but it is really crazy how trout are like a foreign language to some people
Trout are delicate ,and you have to be Careful with them while letting them go. And don't touch there gills. There gills is there life line once you touch the gills eventually they will die. Trout are very sensitive. Happy fishing and thank you for the videos. Beautiful scenery. 🎣🎣🎣
LFG I am reading a regulation interpretation, you can keep 4 Brooks over 8 in and additional ones under 8 inches due to over population of the non native brooks. You misinterpreted the regs which is understandable they are written very poorly, not that it matters those were clearly Cutthroats. LOVE THE VIDEO though, do more stuff like this and keep at fly fishing, it is a skill just like archery and trout are wiley.
dean counts, agreed! The wording is terrible!! It’s rare to find the native pink meat these days. But when you do....it’s the best trout you’ll ever eat!!!
Dude you gotto come Fly fish with me next time your In New Zealand. it will change your life!
Love your vids
Xtraordinary cheers bro
Don't lip trout it will dislocate their lip
Lol
only if you do it wrong, you can dislocate a bass's jaw if it wrong too. just don't hold them horizontal.
@Robert Phillips this is a joke right? Cause if so, Funny. If not what is wrong with you
I'd recommend taking a class on fly fishing and handling trout, love your content but you killed a few in this one. Switch from a mesh net to rubber or whatever it is. Approach from down stream, wet your hands and keep them in the water as much as possible. Trout are an incredibly sensitive fish...
He treats them pretty horribly! He didn't revive properly either.
Wow man you got some awesome videos. Thanks for taking us on these journeys. Such beautiful land
Just finished your first video in the series and was all sad I'd have to wait a while for the next, but then, low and behold!
In CO you can keep 10 brook trout under 8 inches in addition to your trout aggregate. Brook trout over 8 inches count towards your trout aggregate of 4 🤘
Here's a tip for trout fishing you should not lip them you should wet ur hands and hold them not lip them it breaks there jaw love ur vids keep it up
Shows camera how much poop he has on his hands then runs fingers through hair 😂😂 great video man! I wish I knew what mountain chain this was.
Glad your out in my stomping grounds. Enjoy CO while your here! Stop in Denver on your way home 🤟🏼
As someone who didnt grow up hunting or have anyone to teach me, I'm learning as I go pretty much by myself, just as you LFG. So these hunting videos are damn sure relatable to me. Really looking forward to the rest of the videos!
Aww man wipe that doodie off your backpack strap
LMAO fr tho
You read the CO regulations wrong. When it comes to brook trout you can keep an additional 8 fish as a bonus limit as long as they are under 8 inches long. If they are over 8 inches long then they fall under the normal daily limit for trout which is usually 4 fish. So you can actually keep a total of 12 brook trout a day, 4 of which is the normal daily limit and 8 bonus fish (as long as they are under 8 inches long).
At that altitude, not prairie dogs, probably ground squirrels!
ground squirrels are small, might be Marmot
Yep those are cutthroat! If you move the fish forwards and backwards gently underwater to help get the water circulating and get them revived quicker they will swim off a lot quicker like bass. Great vid!
Hey man, you've produced a really cool video. But please don't lipgrip trout and don't forget to wetten your hands before touching them (or keep them wet all the time, which is definitely the best option). They are very sensitive fish and tend to suffer from dry handling and to long exposure time.
Keep on going with that vids from CO👍

Gotta love the Colorado scenery. Love being able to call this place home. The you can keep 10 Brooke Trout 8" and under in aggregate with your normal 4 trout daily bag limit. Also, be fully aware of where you're fishing. Many catch and release only waters.

Hey dude. You made me get into fly fishing. I havent been fishing in a long time and you got me back into it and I just recently caught my first trout. Im going to buy my first fly rod here soon! Thanks!
Me too Brad. Gonna brag a bit and say since I started fishing again for the first time since I was seven years old, I have been slaying trout on a conventional rod, just starting with fly fishing. We'll see how it goes. Thanks Rackley for getting me and Brad off our asses.
Yep, he is going to starve.
You need to try subsurface flies. Everyone loves to watch them bite topwater, but I catch the majority of my trout on nymphs and wet flies. In trout fishing, smaller is better. To distinguish your trout species, color and spot pattern will help you. The cutthroat has a red or orange splash of color under its head (at the throat area). Also, Their spots are denser toward the tail. Look for a white chin/throat on the brookies with an orange to fuschia colored belly. The brown trout are golden in color, similar to a common carp, with a dark brown back. Their spots are normally evenly distributed throughout the body. And, of course, the telltale mark of the rainbow is the distinctive pink stripe on the side of its body. Good fishin'!
Yep,you let go some yummy cutthroats!Catch and release ain't a bad thing ,unless your going hungry!😄
Pretty sure cutthroats have to be released in Colorado?

Forget about hunting stick with fishing!
Alright, I know it has been said somewhere on here but here I go. By now you obviously know what species you were catching. But your release needs a major overhaul. They are not bass and it takes them longer to recover. I have had to nurse one for 15-20min before. They are fragile but beautiful creatures. Your net could use an upgrade as well by having one made of rubber. Will cause less damage to the fish. Overall it was a great video and enjoy watching! Also if you were talking about the tippet being 12lb test I highly recommend using a 5X tippet next time. That is 5lb test and will help minimize the splash of your fly onto the water.
You need to educate yourself about trout species so you know you could have eaten that first big one. It was a cut throat. Yummy!
