I think if you don’t see Quannah Chasinghorse is on theme, then you’re only seeing the theme through a Eurocentric viewpoint. Native representation is on theme because during the gilded age, natives were being pushed onto reservations and their land and resources stolen to fund “the gilded age”. She is wearing native jewellery, and I think the blue references water and the land etc. That is the gilded age for Natives
I believe Blake’s dress is to represent the Statue of Liberty . I was told she was also referencing the famous Vanderbilt light dress from the 1883 Vanderbilt ball . I personally didn’t love the dress but I think she was on theme . Update :she said in an interview it was also about architecture of New York like the Empire State Grand central station etc.

Most of them didn’t understand the Assignment. Where is there Comprehension, the Gilded Age, not The Red Carpet. I can’t even begin to name the Worst Dressed because there were so many of them. 🤦🏾♀️
The fact that Lady Gaga was more on theme than ANYBODY, but it was for the A Star is Born premiere, gives me EVERYTHING! Lady Gaga understood the assignment years before the assignment was assigned.
I LOVED her dress - the texture/pattern contrast between the main body of the dress with the ribbon is absolutely stunninggg!! the color palette leaned into that warmth of gold without being so literal. she looked statuesque for sure!!
I think Quannah Chasinghorse’s look was definitely on theme. 1870-1900 were the peak of westward expansion and the “Indian Wars”. I interpreted her dress as a red-carpet version of the camp dresses that Native women wore when placed in camps. The jewelry she is wearing is made of materials that were introduced with the increased contact with European settlers (glass beads) AND natural materials that have become more and more scarce since colonization (dentilliium shells). I think she did a fantastic job of representing what the “gilded age” meant for Native people.

I wanna see the invites for these events.. do they give them examples of what they should wear? Explain the meaning behind the theme? Or is it like a poorly worded essay question the celebrities have to figure out for themselves?
Idk but I saw an interview with one of the celebs and they mentioned looking at an archive of outfits from the museum while deciding what they wanted to do - so maybe they are shown outfits for the theme to inspire them.... ? People magazine says "While invitees are required to honor the dress code, they on behalf of the designers have the creative freedom to interpret the theme for themselves". I think the camp themed year was so interesting because they had Susan Sontag's essay to read but otherwise it's probably just a broad/vague idea for these other themes

the thing with blake is that the styling of the dress was not on theme for the gilded age, but she made the reference to the statue of liberty being recolored from bronze to green during the gilded age, so she basically took an history approach to it instead of a fashion approach, which to me keeps the met interesting

thank u for giving me something to watch as insomnia is getting me good
Your fashion reviews are quickly becoming my comfort videos
Chris I’ve been binging your videos for the past week & it’s been my source of joy, as I have Covid for the first time & am going through an early quarter-life crisis - but I’m happy to be here & thank you for your content
“Economy with extra leg room.” I’m 💀
the thing with blake is that the styling of the dress was not on theme for the gilded age, but she made the reference to the statue of liberty being recolored from bronze to green during the gilded age, so she basically took an history approach to it instead of a fashion approach, which to me keeps the met interesting
@laskin riubn what does kim have to do with what i said, none of the kardashians were on theme
Needed this lighthearted video so much after the news earlier. Couldn’t sleep. ❤️ Thank you!
honestly, kylie's look really gives me, "i'm definitely too rich to be here, but any publicity is good publicity."
I just don’t understand the point of having a theme if every year almost everyone doesn’t follow ??
Whoa maybe Billie should make this her new era look. She’s killing it! Like I could see this trickling down into more wearable pieces. I want to see more!
Honestly I can’t even be disappointed after last year I expected this 😩
Chasing horse nailed the theme, not in the stereotypical sense, but it’s inspired by native people in the time era.
I’ve never clicked so fast for a review😂 I love you and your blunt reviews! Always the best part of the Met Gala!💯💯💯💕
i been waiting for this one….TURN IT UP
wow Chris ran to record this video almost as fast as I ran to the comment section
I have been WAITING for your reaction the second photos came out
a gothic hershey kiss was so dead on for that one outfit lmao. also, i feel like these ppl never understand the assignment and it shows in their fashion 🙄
Omg hi Chris!!! Thanks for the title shoutout bestie
18:37 it was a thin coating of gold! she’s shirtless with body paint
so technically she’s very on theme
Chris I love you, I truly do, but I cannot believe you gave amy schumer flowers and not Blake lively, miss New York. I’m also glad I watched the vogue red carpet interviews where they got to explain their styling choices and interpretation of the theme. thanks for giving me some much needed content that isn’t doom scrolling tho right now.
People need to read about a theme honestly like it's not that hard to find inspiration in THIRTY YEARS OF FASHION. So many mistook Gilded for Gilt ommmgggg. But it's GILDED AGE like how do they not make the connections??? There's literally a show called Gilded Age!
Chris: copper that’s oxidized
Me: like the Statue of Liberty? 👀👀
