FINNEAS sweetie
I could care less about celebrity events and even I was offended by kylie Jenner's outfit
*couldn't care less* you're saying you care currently
@@Taylorjade007 yeah I guess, but people say both
From the deadpan look on her face she must have realized how stupid she looked
it was literally giving 2016 like what ever was that
i’m in love with it. I would so wear that outfit. I think she was one of the best dressed.
so disappointed that not many people followed such a simple theme
yeah like even when I was reacting to these I was just like .... ????
@@chrisklemens isn't it literally the same theme as last year though?
@@stinksofbeefio no last year was American something something. This one was guilded glamor I don't know why people were saying the wrong thing
Seriously what a fun time right and they had so many opportunities to do so oh my gosh like I'm just so I'd I'm out of words right now
it’s so sad how little people know about history🥲 like almost NO ONE got it?? and even chris obviously has no idea what the theme means pls just educate yourself hahaha
So, Blake Lively was totally on theme. The transformation of her dress was a big nod to lady liberty (copper oxidizing, tiara), the body of her dress was a tribute to the Empire State Building. She nailed it.
exactly what Chris said sad the beginning, the description of gilded glamour lol idk how he didn’t like it
I thought it was so ugly! Lol
@@neutral.chaotic the met is supposed to be artsy and fashionable, it's not supposed to be pretty and the thing is... the celebrities rarely come up with their own outfits, it's usually done by designers who *are supposed to* have all this in mind
@@adriennepaige4003 I think it’s still supposed to be somewhat pleasing to the eye. The designer or whoever chose this dress could’ve done the same idea, but a different, more beautiful dress. I liked billies dress the most because not only did it follow the theme, it’s also something that you could wear nowadays and it’d be beautiful. But I literally know nothing so take that however you will.
@@bean4734 Pleasing to the eye is different for everyone, if designers chased everyone’s satisfaction they’d end up with a bunch of basic outfits and people would STILL have something to say
You’re entitled to your own opinion even if you don’t fully understand the meaning behind it, if you don’t like the dress that’s fine.. someone else probably thinks it’s amazing
The thing is Blake always pulls out all the stops for the Met Gala, she always stands out. I think she should eventually change it up instead of always going to extravagant gowns but then, you’d have to find another way to wow people
Seriously, someone should be at the door making everyone explain why their outfits follow the theme or they have to go home.
I thought the exact same thing 🤯🤣🤣
If they do that then we will only have like 5 people inside that event🤡
@@Heartpnj teachable moments, lol
miss anna wintour herself would also end up home in that case
@@lauramakinen9940 literally 😭😭
You know the person that wore the Cookie Monster pajama pants to school and had the matching snap back to take peace-sign-tongue-out selfies in? Yeah, that’s what Kylie is serving.
On point lmao
why is that my favorite aesthetic tho 💀
And it’s such a mess I didn’t even notice that her hat thing is literally a ball cap
HELP MEMEME
“walk the mile” couture
Props to Chris for actually showing the image the whole time he's talking about the outfit and not showing it for 0.2 seconds
It ain’t much, but it’s truly honest work
Chris I am the Jewelry designer behind Quannah chasing horse’s met gala look. The jewelry piece was made from earth elements from across America and Canada. I use traditional techniques and designs in this piece. during the gilded age a lot of Native American land was taken and sold. Quannah literally delivered the land to the Met gala, she gave a different perspective on what the gilded age was.
Your work was absolutely beautiful and shows how talented you are. Thank you, also, for giving some insight into her look.❤
I think if you don’t see Quannah Chasinghorse is on theme, then you’re only seeing the theme through a Eurocentric viewpoint. Native representation is on theme because during the gilded age, natives were being pushed onto reservations and their land and resources stolen to fund “the gilded age”. She is wearing native jewellery, and I think the blue references water and the land etc. That is the gilded age for Natives
period
agree
Absolutely!!
yes!!!!!!
THANK YOU!! Just made a similar comment and scrolled to see yours. Her not being on “theme” is exactly the point 💗
I believe Blake’s dress is to represent the Statue of Liberty . I was told she was also referencing the famous Vanderbilt light dress from the 1883 Vanderbilt ball . I personally didn’t love the dress but I think she was on theme .
Update :she said in an interview it was also about architecture of New York like the Empire State Grand central station etc.
I meant 1883 🤦🏽♀️
Her dress was honestly my favorite. I thought She looked stunning !!
She looked beautiful😩 I think I just didn’t really like the bow. She definitely understood the assignment
@@mercedeztrevino133 i’m not sure if you saw (also watching this at the beginning of the vid so idk if chris shows it) but the bow came down into a teal train
i absolutely hate the colour of blue-green on the dress, i wish it was darker and more green. right now she looks ripped out of 2015
I was SO disapointed. They could have given SO much. We mostly got some kind of weird 'Hollywood Glamour' looks... like they thought 'the gilded age' refers to the golden age of hollywood.
The little historical thinking the teams of celebrities had to do to fit the theme just look at the exhibition of the event they are going to for charity
Agreed
Most of them didn’t understand the Assignment. Where is there Comprehension, the Gilded Age, not The Red Carpet. I can’t even begin to name the Worst Dressed because there were so many of them. 🤦🏾♀️
I think Quannah Chasinghorse’s look was definitely on theme. 1870-1900 were the peak of westward expansion and the “Indian Wars”. I interpreted her dress as a red-carpet version of the camp dresses that Native women wore when placed in camps. The jewelry she is wearing is made of materials that were introduced with the increased contact with European settlers (glass beads) AND natural materials that have become more and more scarce since colonization (dentilliium shells). I think she did a fantastic job of representing what the “gilded age” meant for Native people.
The fact that Lady Gaga was more on theme than ANYBODY, but it was for the A Star is Born premiere, gives me EVERYTHING! Lady Gaga understood the assignment years before the assignment was assigned.
I was wondering the same!
@@laryssa.fantin I don’t even think she went to this year’s gala lol
@@mrierie25 yuh also i saw a pic of selena gomez at like the entrance i was like is that true..?
lady gaga wasn't at the met gala. that picture is from her movie premier a star is born lol
@@viridianaguzman5207 isn't that what she said?
Blake's dress was an ode to NYC's architecture and the statue of liberty... it is extremely on theme
More than Kim K i would say
I LOVED her dress - the texture/pattern contrast between the main body of the dress with the ribbon is absolutely stunninggg!! the color palette leaned into that warmth of gold without being so literal. she looked statuesque for sure!!
@@kaylala1217 same I was lowkey bummed that chris hated both of them! Lol
Still ugly imo tho 🤣
I LOVED IT SHE LOOKED GORGEOUS !!!!!
how are these people filthy rich and get invated to a very exclusive event, and they have one job that is to dress for the theme and they don't do that??😐
I think they dont get to pic, the designer pics them
Because they're filthy rich and will get invited anyway 👍
The fact that Billie’s was all recycled Gucci pieces AND vegan leather shoes?! Ate.
Same with Shawn's outfit
Why did no one embrace the trend of having a big booty.. by exaggerating their booty with fabric...
Everyone wasted this theme.. for real.
Even a simple Pinterest search on that time frame pulls hundreds of amazing runway looks..
Did anyone even plan in advance?!?! LOL
That was exactly what I wanted to see!! Now is the time to truly show off the BBLs and no one did it 🥲
I don't think you understand This has nothing to do with themes This is so rich people can advertise designer brands. The rich have all the power lol
katy perry did have the booty thing
Serisoulyyyyy, and dressing in 18 century type clothing has been a trend ive been seeing a lot lately so idk how everyone missed it
The way that i actually look forward to both yours and HauteLeMode's review of the Met more than the actual show
His is so much smarter and eloquent
They had the opportunity to dress like the people from the capitol on hunger games and they fucked it up so bad it is sad
This!!
I am SO disappointed nobody used Gustav Klimt's gilded paintings as a reference; it would have been beautiful and could've been sooooo well done
I had the same thought!
at first I thought that’s what the pattern on Blake Lively’s gown was attempting to replicate @ 10:31
THIS!!
I genuinely thought Kylie’s outfit was a JOKE?! Like it can’t be real? Seriously thought it was a photoshop when I saw it circulating online!! 😭
Honestly kinda thought the same thing. I almost wonder if they kinda had a goal of it being the worst look at the met to get a lot of publicity from it.
@@ElizabethButters1111 no she just thought she ate and didn’t
@@ElizabethButters1111 girl you are giving her too much credit
@@ElizabethButters1111 this look was a tribute...
Her after party look was more on theme than her met gala look lol
“Shawn Mendes could show up in James Charles’s body heat predator suit” I cried literal tears hahahahha
the fact that reading this comment just gave me a flash image of James in that damn body suit but making noises like Predator (ya know from the movie Predator). I'm not okay.
I died 😂😂 then hit us with the British are coming 😂😂😂
Chris you're so funny her dress was literally supposed to look like copper oxidizing like the Statue of Liberty It was a whole dress based on New York
The most annoying part of it all is that the gilded age and the art nouveu era overlapped almost exactly. SO MUCH could have been done with that.
So far, Quannah and Billie were the most overtly on theme. Quannah looked very art nouveu and Billie was definitely gilded age (though I wish the skirt had been fuller/longer and her hair a little more dramatic.)
It’s the way you were completely correct about what Blake’s dress was without even knowing 😂
I saw somewhere that Blake Lively's dress was meant to represent the Statue of Liberty, which was gifted to the US during the Gilded Age.
May Day was literally on the first. How did nobody reference worker’s rights? I was waiting for someone to show up I’m a beautiful bustled gown, covered in gold and soot. The layers were there. All they had to do was google the era.
(Thank you, Riz Ahmed.)
Lmao soot tf
Literally this! I didn't know what the theme was, but when he said it, my mind immediately went to unionizing, exploitation of workers, and company scrip. I was SO hopeful that someone (THANK YOU RIZ AHMED) would use this as an opportunity to talk about class inequality. I think the only other person who used this opportunity was Quannah Chasinghorse, though I admittedly didn't understand her outfit until I read comments from some Indigenous people here.
Kylie Jenner looks like a “cool girl” getting married in such a “cool” ceremony hahaha
I think a lot of POC this year took the theme and applied it to what their culture was doing at the time. That's why many of them looked stunning, but less "on theme". Hopefully they pick a more inclusive, creative theme next year!
the funniest thing was that Anna Wintour herself didnt follow the theme...
i really thought that everyone would step up their game this year cause of the theme, but like now that i see it im beginning to believe people's fashion gets worse and worse every year
It’s not even their sense of fashion they just lazy as hell since they can obviously dress for other events.
Blake’s was the most on theme by far! Her inspo was architecture of the gilded age and she represented the statue of liberty as copper when it was new, and the change to teal/blue is the color today! Brilliant and gorgeous
Gilded glamour is like “in excess” it’s like what rich people do when they don’t know what else to do with their money. It was an age of industrialization and growth and some families finally had tons of resources and money. It reflected in their clothes by use of lots of ruffles, ruching, and other expensive details.
It's come to the point we don't even need the 'brutally honest' bit in the caption cos we just know how it's gonna go down 🙈😂 x
Considering the theme was "Gilded Glamour" and not "Gilded Age Glamour", I think a lot of people interpreted gilded beyond the gilded age and more the other definitions of gilded, one being "of wealth and privilege".
Edit: the technical theme of the met gala is "In America: An Anthology of Fashion"
ya but the age is so much more fun and the fashion from that time period was crazy and would have made an entire night full of amazing fashion. even if you disregard what the words mean, more than half of the people were not on theme period even if you pick a side on what they meant by gilded glamour
i’m very disappointed with this years turnout. i think that the designers had SO MUCH potential, the gilded glamour theme could have been so cool. but for some reason the stylists miss the mark every year!?
Blake’s dress was one of the only ones I feel was close to theme. Her dress was specifically to represent lady liberty. (Statue or liberty) and “the city that never sleeps” NYC - more of a new age gilded vibe
already?? somebody give chris a raise
@ RUclips
Billie literally saved the met and matched the theme period
Q
honestly im okay with poc not being on theme if it means that they dont have to dress like their opressors or opressed ancestors. slavery was abolished just a few years prior to the beginning of the guilded age. that guilded age wealth was made off of slavery and indigenous genocide. indigenous folx should and could wear whatever the fuck they want to this cuz this is their land.
Quannah was actually on theme from an indigenous perspective!
not that deep bbyg
@@breesbutera3613 it’s always that deep if you’re not white
@@paulirosa2075 i’m literally black??? and it’s never this deep y’all doin too much
OMG you’re right! If the Kardashians came as a “group costume” that would’ve been so cool!!
I feel like none of the heavy hitters who would normally smash the theme were there. No Gaga, no Rihanna, no Zendaya, no Billy Porter, no Ezra Miller (probably for good reason), no Lil Nas X, etc.
Subtly appreciating how Chris refers to strangers as they/them instead of he/she because he doesn't know who they are.
I spit out my cereal when you said “I guess the planning went skirt skirt” 🤣
Wait but you got Blake’s look PERFECTLY. She was the Statue of Liberty!
This year was just so disappointing.. barely anyone really was on theme and many of those who were still weren’t giving what needed to be gave
I heard that was one of emma stone’s wedding dresses… which makes me even more confused & upset that she wore it to the met
they need to invite more drag queens to show everyone how to follow themes
it’s because taylor swift, zendaya, tom holland, florence pugh, doja cat, and rihanna are missing. ik they would’ve EATEN IT UP
FLORENCE AND RIHANNA WOULD HAVE SLAYED
I'd love to see you name the designers in future videos. Especially with the MET Gala, they're all guests of a specific designer so it's really the designers vision and interpretation of the theme.
That's what Luke is for
There were like 5 on theme.. i feel like they need to start turning people away at the door if theyre not dressed appropriately like how at clubs they turn away people in sneakers
Chris: Spends 20 minutes being frustrated at nobody following the theme... Also Chris: Couldn't be bothered to even talk about Sarah Jessica Parker's dress even though she was one of the few that actually dressed on theme 😂
I think cause he's kinda right she does the same thing every year- it's the headpiece!
The way we have to keep saying “this outfit was ok but not for the met” “this outfit isn’t very met gala” THIS IS THE MET COME ON PEOPLE. I also deeply hope the met gala is not a lost art, but it’s starting to look that way …… lord save us
Chris is really on it lately, we love
Totally
So glad I'm not the only one who didn't like Emmas skirt, I would've looked better with a different top but I also feel like so many people wore that same skirt. It just threw the whole outfit off but she still looked so good.
yall she scratched the theme and the rest of louis vuitton people missed the theme completely. we need to say thank you lv for not embarrassing emma and she looks great so im ok with it
i do wonder if the skirt was played down cause she’s supposed to be the interviewer?? i’m probably wrong but it’s just a theory. pretty consistently the interviewers and more dressed down so that may be why.
Blake Lively literally was the only one who delivered and she looked AMAZING. I'm not with you on this one, Chris, I'm sorry 😭💀
Loved this vid!! To add to the Quannah Chasinghorse commentary: her being Indigenous and not following an American theme is exactly the point 😉 it’s like a poised middle finger to the colonizer concept of gilded age (historically and present day) 🥰
lol what?? Just what are you even saying?? Please explain what YOUR version of AMERICAN THEME is…??? Especially AMERICAN INDIAN….???
i think a lor of people thought the Gilded Age was 1920-1960s ish. Art Deco is not Gilded. Kim looked amazing but was so off theme, as were so many others.
i was waiting for this one!! you’re so quick with it, we love to see it
I made sure to get this one up FAST !
I think there’s a difference between understanding the assignment and whether or not you actually like the outfit. Example: I HATE Billie Eilish‘s dress, BUT it was in keeping with the fashion from the Gilded Age, so I’m going to say she understood the assignment. Kim K looked GREAT in Marilyn Monroes dress (I have my own opinions of her wearing MM ACTUAL DRESS 😤), BUT this was an example of not understanding the assignment. Also, can we just talk real quickly about Kris cross-playing as Jackie Kennedy, again didn’t understand the assignment.
i personally hate when they dont follow the theme of that year. its so interesting to be able to look thru met gala pics thruout the years and be able to know what the concept of that year was
I’m very appreciative that you uploaded this so soon for all the uk huns to watch during breakfast
luv ❤️ xx
2018 Met Gala (Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination) was the best
Because Chris doesn’t know much about historical fashion, I think it would be SO fun to see him revisit this video with a guest, like Carolina Zebrowski or Mina Le!
Or Bernadette Banner!
Thats what I was expecting. THE ROAST! Also i appreciate that you gave the most honest reviews and you did not sugarcoated the outfits.
100,000% agree with Emily Ratajkowski. I literally thought it was photoshoped when I saw her look on Instagram. It's horrid
I wanna see the invites for these events.. do they give them examples of what they should wear? Explain the meaning behind the theme? Or is it like a poorly worded essay question the celebrities have to figure out for themselves?
Idk but I saw an interview with one of the celebs and they mentioned looking at an archive of outfits from the museum while deciding what they wanted to do - so maybe they are shown outfits for the theme to inspire them.... ? People magazine says "While invitees are required to honor the dress code, they on behalf of the designers have the creative freedom to interpret the theme for themselves". I think the camp themed year was so interesting because they had Susan Sontag's essay to read but otherwise it's probably just a broad/vague idea for these other themes
Thank you for being one of the only ones that actually explained the theme and it’s history. Also Big mood when u we’re talking about trying to come up with a deeper meaning for photos in photo school because SAMEEEEEEDE
honestly fashion from the Gilded age was so iconic. I cannot believe with all the money these people have the flopped SO HARD.
I can’t sleep, so this is perfect timing. Love your reaction Chris!
Needed this lighthearted video so much after the news earlier. Couldn’t sleep. ❤️ Thank you!

truly heartbreaking to see such a beautiful theme be butchered 😭
I was actually living for both of Blake’s outfits 😍😍😍
YOURE SO FAST! i love you chris, ty for the morning video ♥
thank u for giving me something to watch as insomnia is getting me good
“Economy with extra leg room.” I’m 💀
kim looked amazing, but the gilded ages were 80 years before marilyn wore that dress.... so she missed the theme by almost a century. yikes.
Whoa maybe Billie should make this her new era look. She’s killing it! Like I could see this trickling down into more wearable pieces. I want to see more!

Literally have waited a year for your take on the Met Gala fashion!! Love the honesty boo do your thang!
Tysm i slept through the met and needed this
LMAO
This is exactly what I needed on a shitty Tuesday morning, thank you for this
Cole Sprouse was giving very much tin man on his way to find a heart and I hated every second of it
I LOVED blake's first dress - the texture/pattern contrast between the main body of the dress with the ribbon is absolutely stunninggg!! it's the only way I've seen a bow & ribbon done like that where it doesnt look tacky to me.. and I think that's because of the material & color choices! the color palette leaned into that warmth of gold without being too literal. the earthy tones ground it. statuesque! the pattern on the dress also kind of reminds me of stained glass - I saw a couple people mention in the comments that architecture inspired her look so I feel like that totally translated. her first dress was like being indoors, and her second dress was like stepping out the front door of that same building on a beautiful sunny day. lovely evolution and abstract representation of the theme!
I genuinely thought Kylies dress was someone's online edit when I first saw the photo. I didn't think it was real!! 🤮🤮 AND I LOVE KYLIE!!
OMG I KNOW. I love kylie but when the shade room first posted her pic I thought it was a joke or a meme????
Honestly Chris I'm right there with you..So confused and over it ...
People really confused “the gilded age” with “the golden age” and I’m disappointed. These designers should have done their research.
I’ve waited all year for this 🍿☺️
