    My hedgehog is mean right now. Gets scared and hisses. I've heard that's nothing out of the normal. He is 3 months almost 4. The breeder said she's passed off hedgehogs to people and it takes them about a week to get comfortable. So I don't think because he hisses or his quills go up that he's mean? He's just in a new home. Just like us, we would be defensive in a new home too.

    The first Day i had him i let him get used to his new case and i talked with him and i fed him mealworms with my hand i was very patient
    Next Day i put one of my used shirts in his case so he would get used to my sent i then later that Day careful grabbed his sleepingbag that he was laying in up and placed it in my hand
    Next Day i rolled him carefully out in my bed and let him walk around and at a point he wasnt even scared anymore so i showed him my hand and i picked him up and now its been 2 Weeks since i Got him
    And were still Bonding more and more ❤️❤️

    I bought a hedgehog and my home temperature is about 65 degrees. I turn my space heater on in my room to about 72 degrees and leave the door closed but at night it goes down to 65 again. Is that too cold for a hedgehog. I know they like the heat but mine seems to be acting normal. I just don't want him to go into hibernation. He sleeps all day until like midnight. He is 5 months old is that normal?

    • @earthling1984
      @earthling1984  9 лет назад +6

      +SuperMechaFrieza too cold. 65F way too cold. Anything under 70F is risking it, and most recommend over 72F. 75 to 82F is the range most prefer.

    • @earthling1984
      @earthling1984  9 лет назад +6

      +Earthling1984 And he wouldn't go into hibernation at 5 months, that is too young for that to happen. But soon it will be a possibility, and it can/will most likely cause death. Try to get your heat consistently above 72F. If you don't want to run that high wattage space heater, get yourself a light, probably around 50 to 75 watt for how much you need to raise the temperature (7F or more). Get something like a red or purple/blue reptile heat lamp, and hang that over the cage. Leave that on 24/7. Put a thermometer in the hedgehog tank as well to test the temperature and make sure light is keeping it in correct range.

    I still find it odd people having hedgehogs as pets. Here in England, they're not available as pets. They just live wild in our gardens, pinching our cat food (we don't mind) very noisily (crash bang!) and gobbling up the slugs and snails. They're considered the gardener's friend. We've just made a hedgehog hibernation box and put it in the garden full of straw and dry leaves for a little darling to over Winter in.

      Yes. You should never take a wild animal and keep it as a pet! Animals that were born in the wild, should stay in the wild. They have a life out there, they have lived there since birth; it's not fair to put them in a cage. Now, my hedgehogs are captive bred African Pygmy Hedgehogs. They were born in cages, their moms, dads, grandparents, great grandparents were all living in cages. This is what they know. If you want a pet, always only buy captive bred.

And that nose is twitching all of the time, they must've a very good sense of smell. The movements she makes with her head, when she's on her back, it looks like she prefers to be turned around with her face down, trying to wriggle back to normal.

    I dont have to buy them, they just come to me.. 😅 and had also neighbours, friends bringing me hedgehogs they found on the street or sideways, after hearing that i shelter them to give them winter-survival-help. Someone eaven brought me one in a shopping-bag 😂 Recently got one adult and 2 babys moving into my garden.. if you want to adopt a hedgehog and own a garden: just put a fox-safe hedgehog-house into the garden put enough straw and hay inside, to make it warm and cozy, put water and hedgehog-food or dry catfood, apples, bread beside the entry and they will usualy move in by themselves... they come and go as they please, but mostly will sleep in their house during winter and just come out to eat and drink. If you find one still rooming around in autumn, it means he couldnt find a safe shelter yet and is still to underweight for a wintersleep.. this means he will probably starve/freeze to death without some human support: then he needs urgent help! You can just pick them up, they dont bite. Once they moved into your garden, they will mostly stay there the full year, hiding somewhere in the bushes and eat all the nasty slugs, bugs and spiders they can catch. If you dont bother them once in their winter-shelter, they will feel safe and come back every year as long as they live, sometimes eaven bringing you their babys.. so its realy rewarding to shelter hedgehogs.

    I rehome my baby hedgies around 8-10 weeks when they have opened their eyes and eating food on their own. 4 and even 5 weeks is too small to me. I got mine at the age of around 6 weeks but bonded with her and she was fine. I did not get her from a breeder…just from someone whose pet had babies. Mine done well and became super trusting of me. She used to love for me to put her in the pockets of my tshirts while I cleaned or sat around the house. It gave her time to bond with me and feel safe. I handled her frequently and now she never hisses or spikes up with me. Since getting her, she has had two litters of babies and has allowed me to get close to her babies. That may not be the case with every mother hedgehog because some will abandon their babies, but mine trusted me and I trusted her and out of the two litters she had, every single baby hedgie became tame and was used to being handled by human hands. Like I said though, this may not be the case for every other hedgie. I do not recommend handling newborn hedgies because your mother hedgie may abandon them. I’ve had nothing but positive experiences with my mother and father hedgies and both of their litters. All the babies were extremely calm and sweet and that’s because I bonded with them and handled them from a young age. That’s not the case with every hedgie. Each one is different which is why I don’t recommend handling newborns in case your mother hedgie abandons them.

    Hedgehogs aren't considered exotic in my state, so it's perfectly legal to buy one at some pet stores. My parents actually asked me if I'd like a pet hedgehog. I understand they need a fairly large enclosure, need to be kept warm, need an exercise wheel, and prefer a diet of insects like crickets and meal worms.

    I've been reading up on keeping a hedgehog as a pet a lot and have completely filled out a complete journal of caring, housing, diet, grooming, bathing etc etc. And I know that hedgehogs in the wild will usually always have fleas and ticks. In my research I only gathered and trusted information that would come from experienced and/or licensed sites, owners and sanctuaries. But sometimes I'll google something for a quick answer, and someone on yahoo said "Hedgehogs NEED to have fleas~ blablabla stuff ~ something something for the blood circulation." I highly doubt this as other sites haven't mentioned this at all and I just spent two full days gathering information and tomorrow I'm going to call around the city to find a vet that'll take hedgehogs. But, I just want to be sure eh. So, do hedgehogs really need to have fleas or was that guy just misinformed or referring to wild hedgehogs?

    • @tessahardyak1
      @tessahardyak1 10 лет назад +3

      No that's incorrect, African Pygmy Hedgehogs should not have fleas or ticks. They do sometimes get mites which you can get treated in the vets. And believe it or not, you're one of few people to actually do actual research, a lot of people say "They're cute" buy it and mistreat it, so.. Thanks :)

      Thanks for clearing that up, I thought it was weird haha. I spent 2 more days and night doing research and asked the previous owner/breeder a lot of questions too. Last friday I brought my new hedgehog home and she is still a bit shy but it's going really well! She has a fabulous cage and fleece bedding because the petshop had to order the bedding I wanted, but she seems to love the fleece but I'll be alternating since the fleece does capture the smell a lot and I don't like that haha.

      Bullshit answers to very valid question.
      Hedgehogs definitely smell, their urine and poo smell and without bath they would smell too. And it's quite bad smell. I had lots of different pets and hedgehog actually surprised me with his smell. Also when it runs at night it spreads the smell around.
      Ultimately hedgehogs aren't naturally clean. It's opposite - they smear smelly things into themselves for some reason. Owner needs to keep them clean himself.
      But if you will have it clean, pick poo every day, have proper substrate and change it regularly and wash hedgehog monthly it won't smell. Well, there will be a scent but nothing unpleasant.

      You can just find a Canadian Hedgehog breeder that ships their hedgehogs.

      thanks for the advice :) but I would want to handle my hedgehog is before getting one and i don't really like the idea of shipping hedgehog. I can always drive to the place... just take a long time.

    I have a gray hedgehog and whenever I try to pick them up they use telekinesis and fling me across the room.
    What should I do?

    I have a Hedgehog who's sarcastic . He collects gold rings and emeralds. His favorite food is chili dogs and his best friend is a fox.

    Well with the “nice hedgehog” thing um
    Many people (at least in my area) need to buy them online and drive out of state to pick them up. That’s what we did. I’m the only person in my family who my hedgehog is comfortable with after a little less than a minute.
    It takes my mom and stepdad about 5 minutes before she opens up to them and anyone else she just doesn’t really come out.
    It’s not mean, it’s there way of protecting themselves.
    How would you like it if you were picked up by someone 20x bigger than you and don’t know them?

    I follow Brian May and I understand hedgehogs are endangered in England. Is it environmentally sound to keep one as a pet? If I have a hedgehog - can I use a heat source to keep it at the right temp? I live in the North East US. I have a sweet cat - is it a bad idea to have a hedgehog plus a cat?

    Mine keeps running in circles, technically breaking the sound barrier, and collecting golden loops. What do I do now?
