  • These are the swings I have compiled for these three all-time greats. 25 professional majors between them tells you their swings are worthy of study.

Great footage! Hagen and Jones had upright swings, while Sarazen bent way over at address and swung flat. Hagen's swing looks like Arnold Palmer's. Jones lifted his left heel way up at the top of his backswing, only the tip of his toe remains on the ground. Sarazen's stance was solid until the follow-through, when his feet became very unstable, especially his left foot.

The reason that they are all so good is that they swing the club around them as if the clubhead is a weight on a string. They have freedom in their body and apply minimal leverage to the shaft, which means they don't destroy the swinging motion. The dragged takeaway is consequence of them not wanting to apply leverage or get the right hand involved (to prevent it lifting the club). Ernest Jones told us how to do this over 100 years ago. Swinging the clubhead throughout the entire stroke with good rhythm and timing is the only thing that you should be focused on when learning the game. The body will respond to your intention to swing the clubhead sensing the weight in your hands.

Sarazen's swing reminds me of how a pitbull runs. 😊

I was enjoying the swing compa6risons and then ...,WTF. Gene Sarazen shot golf balls at blacks?!?!? At 10:19, Sarazen shoots golf balls at black people who are standing there like they're blindfolded. I've searched the Internet for context but came up empty, the closest reference being blindfolded 'last man standing fights' Augusta used to hold pre WW2 with black teens. Do you know where that clip came from and do you have more background?

I believe I first saw that clip in a documentary about segregation and the south, but I can't put my finger on the exact name. It's like the boxing scene in the James Brown movie. That was at Augusta. I'm not sure where this was taken.
